Legal Tip of the Month from Bacon Wilson The start of a new year is often a time to renew accounts, memberships, or insurance policies. Most of us are familiar with insurance and have insurance on our automobiles, homes, and even on our lives. Insurance policies provide protection when the unexpected happens. At Bacon Wilson, we like to think of estate planning as another kind of insurance. When you have the proper documents in place and a crisis occurs, the “damages” are usually far more manageable than if you had not planned ahead. If you become ill, a properly-drafted Health Care Proxy helps your loved ones manage your care. If you become incapacitated, a Power of Attorney helps your loved ones manage your assets. When you pass away, a Will helps your loved ones fulfill your final wishes. These three documents, when properly prepared and executed, provide a great deal of protection for every person who signs them. They allow you to select who will make decisions on your behalf, should the need arise, rather than having a court decide for you. The most important element of creating a successful plan is working with a qualified attorney. Websites and document downloads simply do not offer the comprehensive planning and well-tested, state-specific requirements to make your plan work as you intend. Our team at Bacon Wilson is ready to help, and we welcome you to visit us in our new location at 99 Springfield Road. Regardless of whether you call us at Bacon Wilson, or you get in touch with another reputable attorney, please do not delay. Get started on your estate plan now and rest easier in 2022, knowing that protections are in place for you and your loved ones.

ONE MIGRAINE IS ONE TOO MANY ARTICLE BY JENNIFER GIFFUNE, RDN

Steps you can take to prevent the next one… Everyone can experience Migraines differently, but there is one common thread – pain that brings you to a dead stop. Diagnosing a Migraine involves ruling out all other problems. Migraine is primarily linked to head pain but can be abdominal. It is a neurological disease. It typically begins in adolescence, but those aged 35- 45 years have the biggest issue with Migraines. Once you have had a Migraine, you most likely will have this problem for a lifetime. Migraines can occur with an “Aura” (visual disturbances) or without (Common Migraine). At the start of an “aura” Migraine there may be slurred speech and confusion. People report seeing spots, flashing light, tracks of bright white light and colors. Then there are decreases in vision. Common Migraines skip these symptoms. During an attack, the brain makes inflammatory, pain generating chemicals around the nerves and blood vessels in the head. You may also have other symptoms, such as dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, nausea and vomiting, etc. It may last a few hours or up to 6 days. There are medications you can take preventively and some when a Migraine strikes. Once you have had a Migraine, you never want another. Look for risk factors. Some you cannot control - age, heredity, menstruation, menopause, and gender. Some risk factors involve lifestyle, such as stress, depression, weight, sleep, fasting, scents, flashing lights and caffeine. Change these and lower the possibility of suffering again. There may also be food allergies and triggers. Get allergy tested so you can remove problems from your plate. There are no tests for triggers, so it’s up to you to find the culprits.

POSSIBLE MIGRAINE TRIGGERS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Aged/fermented cheeses Alcohol Apple Juice/Cider Aspartame (NutraSweet ™) Avocado Chocolate Citrus Coffee Corned Beef Dairy Intensely sweetened foods Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) Nitrites Nuts Over-ripe Bananas Pork Processed foods that are cured/smoked/pickled/canned Red Skinned Apples & Pears Soy Sulfite Dried Fruit Tea Vinegar - Balsamic & Red

One Migraine is one too many. Giving up a favorite food or losing some weight may be difficult, but it sure beats the incapacitation of your next Migraine. Jeff Swanson, Owner Anytime Fitness Westfield

The name Anytime Fitness says it all—fitness anytime, anywhere. Jeff Swanson is a four-location owner of the center that prides itself on customer service. “We receive training from The RitzCarlton; we focus on a warm welcome, care, connection, coaching, and a genuine goodbye.” Anytime Fitness’ Westfield location is clean and unintimidating. You are greeted by coaches and members with a smile. The gym has a key fob system for 24/7 access, disinfectant for cleaning machines, Future Air Filtration Systems, and dividers. Optionally, the center provides necklace safety fobs for extra support. Anytime Fitness also offers a fitness app, allowing members to communicate with their trainer, book training, reserve gym times at some locations, and access customized workouts. The app is a great way for members to stay in contact while staying healthy and supported along their journey. Jeff originally went to college for mathematics, but after his uncle died of medical difficulties due to severe obesity, Jeff quickly

changed his major. Now with over 30 years of experience, Jeff’s son is following in his footsteps as Regional Manager. Jeff hires employees based on their passion to make health happen; he is currently seeking more coaches who want to help our community. Then there are the success stories, like the person with disabilities and trauma who overcame many obstacles to become the happy, healthy version of himself today. Jeff focuses on the importance of “meeting members where they’re at” and building personal relationships. “We get to know your story.” “When you belong to one, you belong to all.” Anytime Fitness locations are on all seven continents, so you can use your membership anywhere. Throughout January, you can join for $1; your Anytime Fitness coach then gives you a personalized plan with 24/7 support to help you start strong and keep you headed toward a happier and healthier YOU. They also offer a Heroes Discount. To join the community, visit Anytime Fitness’ Westfield location at 415 East Main Street. “It’s worth it, so are you.” 413-579-5364.

Full Plate Strength & Conditioning Coaching Staff (left to right) Wyatt Lawrence, Ryan Kennedy, Owner Steve Czerniejewski, and intern Jim Tritt.

As both an exercise physiologist and a professional chef, Steven Czerniejewski serves this winning recipe for success: “What it comes down to is a simple quote I once read,” this Westfield native said. “‘If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.’ ”Czerniejewski owns Full Plate Strength and Conditioning, a South Broad Street training facility where each of four coaches helps clients build physical strength while also encouraging them toward a future of healthy habits and personal growth. “We all have these areas in life that we need to be actively working on, whether it be our health, our career, our relationships,”

said Czerniejewski, once an inactive gamer; now a fit, dual career business owner. “The way that we grow muscularly is the way that we grow in all areas. We have to stress our muscles to grow them. It’s the same in all areas of life.” When coaching clients, Czerniejewski blends his own, can-do attitude with the latest science and his students’ unique goals. Then, he adds his secret ingredient: “Coaching is all about communication,” he said. “You can know all the physiology in the world, but if you can’t communicate that to people, you’re missing the mark.”

Athlete Josephine Andruszkiewicz

TRAINING LIKE AN ATHLETE

Athlete Ryan Garvey

MAX EFFORT SPRINTING // When it comes to success in athletics, the faster athlete typically wins, not necessarily the strongest. In many cases the stronger athlete is the faster athlete. We need to train our strong muscle to move fast. Do this by performing 8-12 max effort sprints each week, and no more than 6 per day. The key phrase is max effort, because running slowly doesn’t make us faster. Rest 10x longer than the time it takes to sprint (a 5s sprint would require at least 50s rest) SINGLE LEG TRAINING // Most of athletics are done on one leg. Sprinting, changing direction, etc. is done on one leg. So, the athlete who has more single leg power will generally be faster. At Full Plate we develop this using sleds, split squats, and single leg squats. MOVE WEIGHTS FAST // Very simple: move slow, be slow. We should pick weights up with speed and a sense of urgency. The last thing we want is to get used to moving slowly. Sometimes this means using a weight that is slightly lighter, for the sake of working on the speed of movement. MULTIPLE JOINTS // Athletics and life are performed using multiple joints. Sprinting, jumping, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, etc. all require multiple joints. We want to use multiple joint exercises (squat, lunge, deadlift, row, etc.) to prepare us for those tasks instead of single joint movements (bicep curls, leg extensions, tricep pushdowns, etc.)

Athlete Emma LaPoint

RECOVERY // The most successful athletes out eat, and out sleep their competition. Training is stressful and breaks down our body. Recovery builds us up stronger than where we were before. Therefore eating foods high in protein, rich in color, and getting enough sleep will make the difference in how much our body grows in response to training.

Custom Homes by Hamelin Framing, Inc. LOCAL TRADESPEOPLE BUILDING SOUTHWICK DREAMS

Searching for an above par building experience? Look no farther than Southwick’s The Greens. This four-phase, residential housing development is graciously spaced along the former Southwick Country Club’s rolling terrain. It’s an opportunity for homeowners, whether upsizing or downsizing, to customize their dream house in a rural community famous for its farm-town feel. “With the Hamelins, the process was seamless,” said Paul Miles, a lifelong Southwick resident who moved to The Greens with his wife, Tina, last October. “They handled everything from soup to nuts, and they were great with suggestions and guiding us along with the process.” By “the Hamelins,” Miles referenced Joe and Greg Hamelin, the father and son who head Custom Homes by Hamelin Framing, Inc. This company’s team members also include one of the developers Brian LeDuc of Fiore Realty Holdings, LLC, ROVI realtors Hollie Hamelin and Meghan Hess, and a committed team of local subcontractors, including Crestview Construction and Trucking of Southwick; Masciadrelli and Son Heating and Air Conditioning of Westfield; Brzoska Plumbing of Montgomery; Concrete Kings, Louis Pallotta Paving, and MHI Kitchens of Agawam; Cortina Tile and Marble of West Springfield, Don Ruel Electric of Chicopee, Lucky’s Construction of Hampden, and Timeless Stone of Bloomfield, CT. Greg and Hollie Hamelin, as well as Brian LeDuc, all live in Southwick. Their goal is to bring quality housing and positive economic development to a community they love. “We’re not people from out of town,” LeDuc said. “Our kids are in Southwick schools. It’s important to us that they can look back and be proud of us.” “We’re committed to doing this right,” Greg Hamelin said. Nestled in a town cherished for its lakes, farm stands, tobacco barns, bike and conservation trails, motocross, and mom-and-pop merchants, The Greens offers lots ranging in size from .65 to 2.60 acres. From there, the possibilities are endless. The Hamelins supply a range of home templates to choose from. Buyers then use today’s advanced technology to explore personal adaptations to make their house uniquely their own. Of course, some buyers may choose not to customize at all. Standard features at The Greens include (among others) town water, propane fuel, septic, four-inch basement and garage floors, double-hung vinyl windows, insulated exterior doors, 30-year architectural shingles, four-inch red oak flooring, comfortable allowances for the buyers’ choice of tile and light fixtures, granite kitchen and bath countertops, a patio or deck, paved driveway, lawn-seeding, and starter landscaping. Resident Joe Carey moved to The Greens in August. During their home’s design phase, he and his wife decided to add a half bath and basement office space. “[The Hamelins] were very transparent and straightforward,” he said. “We were never in a position where they did the work and it came out above the price they quoted us. Everything was to the dollar.” During the build phase, Carey stopped by daily to watch as his home grew from concept to reality. “Obviously, with anything that’s going up from scratch, there were hiccups. But anything that came up, big or small, Greg and his father, Joe, have done everything they can to make it perfect.” “They’re about the product,” Miles said. “If they say they’re going to do something, they do it. They’ve got integrity. They’re very customer driven.” “Greg’s a very straightforward person,” Carey said. “There was never a question that he couldn’t answer. There was never an issue that wasn’t addressed. He and his team were always working toward what I wanted to have from my house. At the end of the day, I got exactly that. This is everything my wife and I were looking for.” CONTINUED >

BELLA MEDSPA BEAUTIFUL, YOUNGER YOU

34

O UR TOWN | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

It only takes a glance at gorgeous, 63-year-old Michelle Pfeiffer to know that facial rejuvenation has come a long way since the 1980s. Today’s procedures look natural, they don’t require a trip to the operating room, and they aren’t just for movie stars. In fact, some of the world’s most contemporary rejuvenation techniques are now available here in Westfield. Baystate Noble and Wing Emergency Room Physician Dr. Craig Schacher opened Bella MedSpa in 2014. Since then, this board-certified physician has been plying his expertise toward giving Whip City residents medical revitalizations in a welcoming boutique right on Court Street.

BELL A MEDSPA

“We offer treatments that show results,” Schacher said. “There are so many out there. My job is to sift through them and offer not necessarily the newest and the greatest, but therapeutics that really work.” More than a supervisor, Schacher handles virtually all Bella MedSpa injections himself. A master injector rather than a mere practitioner, Schacher has studied under expert injectors around the world to ensure his proficiency. “I’m also very systematic about my technique,” he said. “When you get your lips done by me, it’s not like when you get a haircut and one day it’s awesome and the next time it’s like, ‘What happened?’ There’s consistency. That’s what being a master injector means.” Furthermore, Schacher is the only area physician to offer Silhouette Instalifts, which he describes as, “somewhere between a mini facelift and Botox and fillers.” Demanding advanced expertise, Silhouette creates gentle tension on sagging areas by threading fine sutures under the skin. As the sutures dissolve, they stimulate collagen growth for gradual, youthful results lasting up to 24 months. But age defense isn’t Bella MedSpa’s only focus. Schacher also turns his talents toward helping patients find more confidence in their general visage. “There are injections to turn back age, and then there are injections to give someone better bone structure,” he said. “Often, I can give someone a more defined jawline or chin, an improved cheekbone projection, a straighter appearance or shape change to the nose, or even eradicate a downward droop of a smile.” Modern facial rejuvenation is discreet, minimally invasive, and natural in appearance. To meet each patient’s unique goals, Bella MedSpa offers a full palette of applications ranging from injectables, fillers, radio frequency, microneedling, laser treatments, specialized facials, and targeted body sculpting. Private, complimentary consultations are the first step to every procedure. “Beauty is emotional,” Schacher said. “By addressing the few signs of aging that may be holding you back, you are empowering yourself to face the world fearlessly!” 53 Court Street, Westfield mybellamedspa.com 413-562-3552

Sunflower

SMOO T HIE C A F E LOCAL HEALTHY CAFE

Peace, love, and smoothies. The Sunflower Smoothie Cafe located at 208 College Highway, Suite C, in Southwick, MA, has nothing but good food and good vibes. When walking in, I was greeted with kindness and smiles. It was hard to decide what to try because everything on their menu sounded so good. I tried “The Nutmeg” smoothie which includes peanut butter, milk, a dash of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. This smoothie consistency was so light and delicious. I loved it. Avocado toast is my absolute favorite breakfast food and I was so excited to try their version and see how it was. I ate "The 'Cado" toast, with Smashed Avocado and Himalayan Pink Salt and Everything But the Bagel Seasoning. It was so yummy, I wanted more! I think the added salt definitely made it and I would 100% get it again. Next, I tried the "Beyoncai Bowl," which included acai, Sandman’s wild blueberries, peanut butter, banana, and milk. I am not a big smoothie bowl person, however this one was wicked good. All of the flavors blended well together, and it was the best smoothie bowl I have had in a while. 208 College Hwy, Southwick sunflowersmoothiecafe.com 860-653-5678 Madeline LeBlanc, Editorial Coordinator of Westfield CityLifestyle, is a self-proclaimed foodie with a significant Instagram following @hellofoodreviews. RESULTS IN WELLNESS Inspire, Believe, Thrive ARTICLE BY MEGAN BELIVEAU PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARY TRACY PHOTOGRAPHY

Results in Wellness focuses on a person as a whole. Sofia Zanzarella, Managing Partner with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, and Mary Judson, General Manager, are the passionate women behind the peaceful, inviting space that piques your interest in what they have to offer the community. Results in Wellness’ goal is to “design a program to guide you through your journey, to inspire the best version of yourself, to thrive in 2022.” Sofia and Mary are devoted to the services, workshops, and products they provide to supplement clients’ daily lives. What is their vision of success? Sofia recalls the athlete whose pain was gone in two visits, and the child, involved in a fight and wary of attending a self-defense workshop, returning with a friend. Even during difficulty, clients find support in the unique community of professionals and specialists. Wellness services for a hands-on approach to managing pain, relieving stress, relaxing, or detoxing, include Active Release Techniques, massage, chiropractic, reiki, medical aesthetics, and mental health. Services are the foundation of the center and are often complemented with workshops and wellness products. Results in Wellness’ workshops are our pathway to mind, body, and mental wellness. They offer a variety of classes for all ages, areas of interest, and growth: tai chi; yoga classes of gentle, vinyasa, and trapeze; MELT, for elasticity and pain; Groove, a guided free form dance; meditation; and self-defense, tailored to clients’ needs. In 2022, they will offer Women’s Boxercise, a combination of boxing, fitness, and empowerment.

We couldn't be happier with Lesley. She has many years experience in real estate and is very knowledgeable of Southwick/Westfield as she lives in town. Whenever we called with a question or comment, she was very quick to respond which was very important to us because selling a house is very stressful. Ours sold in one week. We would recommend Lesley Lambert to anyone putting a house on the market. Thank You Lesley!
