Westfield Gas & Electric Joins Students During STEM Week Seventh and eighth grade Computer Science students learn about science, technology, engineering and mechanics with WG&E. They toured the operations center, learned about gas and electric safety, mechanics and robotics in the field, computer programming at the utilities, and what it’s like to be a dispatcher. Students also heard from a career panel about each of the various jobs at the municipal utility, hosted by John Leary, WG&E Director of Internet Technology.

Grapefruit is a nutrient powerhouse, rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, fiber, water, pectin, lycopene and folic acid. It is also low in sodium, saturated fat and calories. So, where is the problem? Grapefruit is also chock full of naturally existing plant chemicals known as furanocoumarins. If you take medications daily, you need to know that furanocoumarins can possibly lead to a toxic load of drugs in your bloodstream. When you take medication, it follows a path. First it is broken down in the intestines and absorbed into the blood. Next it goes to the liver, which breaks it down further. Finally, the usable parts are sent out into the body to the appropriate locations. When your doctor prescribes a medication, it is with the knowledge that only a portion of that drug will be used. There are over 85 medications that can have serious consequences from grapefruit juice; such as medications for cholesterol, blood pressure, mental health, asthma, and immune system to name a few. The signs that you may have a problem mixing grapefruit juice and your medications can be quite obvious, scary and dangerous. You may experience an irregular heartbeat, heart blockages, kidney damage, blood clots, and bone marrow damage. One glass of grapefruit juice can make a difference with the effect lasting up to 4 days. Medications are a vital key in the treatment of many health conditions. To make sure the right dosage is being delivered to your body, make it a priority to find out if you need to avoid grapefruit. Your PCP, pharmacist and Registered Dietitian are invaluable in reviewing your medication list to determine the potential risk of interference by furanocoumarins; your life may depend upon it!

It was 1992, and Joe Shibley, facing a layoff from his job, decided to go back to his entrepreneurial roots – after graduating from college, he had been in the ice cream business with his father. This time, he chose the candle-making business, and 30 years later the wicks are still burning brightly. Joe did research into the industry and decided there was room for another candle maker. He experimented with waxes and fragrances, asking neighbors their opinions on the various scents. As Joe became

more encouraged, he knew his product was ready for market, and Pilgrim Candle was born. He shifted production from his home to a factory at the Mill at Crane Pond. Joe’s idea was to sell Pilgrim Candle products wholesale to small gift shops throughout the country. He also sold candles to friends during the holiday season, which led to the idea for a retail store. The store opened at the Mill at Crane Pond with his wife Donna at the helm. She added candle accessories and gift items. Then it came time to expand, CONTINUED >

and Pilgrim’s candle-making operation moved to two floors of a historic building at 36 Union Ave. The retail store eventually moved to the first floor. Fundraising and corporate gifts became other avenues of expansion for Pilgrim Candle, along with the opening in South Hadley of another retail location and the acquisition of Main Street Candlery in Chicopee. In 2000, Donna and Joe purchased Bismarck Place, a former hotel next door to 36 Union Ave. The couple take pride in their restoration of 36 Union Ave as well as the old hotel, now home to several businesses, including a massage therapy practice, yoga, dance, and photography studios, as well as a café. In fact, Pilgrim Candle’s retail store moved to Bismarck Place for a time before relocating its previous space at 36 Union Ave. Donna said longtime customers are experiencing a bit of nostalgia when they visit the store now that it is back in its former space. With a refreshed interior and the addition of cozy clothing, more specialty foods, and kitchen gadgets prompted by the pandemic, Pilgrim Candle is responding to lifestyle trends. To showcase the expanded line of specialty foods and kitchen wares, Donna has created a “charcuterie table” display, artfully arranged with jams, cheese boards, olive oils, and more. “We’ve also refreshed our brand with the help of an intern from Westfield State University,” she said. The holiday season is a special time at Pilgrim Candle. Having kicked off the season on November 17 with the Holiday Stroll, a vendor marketplace with local artisans and crafters in Bismarck Place, and Thankful Hearts, an annual fundraiser for the Westfield Food Bank held at the Pilgrim Candle store. With new marketing efforts and a presence on social media, Donna said she’s prepared for “an over-the-top holiday season.” “This is the perfect year to venture out and shop

While much has changed in the years since Joe Shibley made the company’s first candle, the price of Pilgrim Candles has not changed much. “We’re selling value and high quality, we use the best waxes, perfume and raw materials,” Donna said. As Pilgrim Candle celebrates its 30th anniversary, Donna said she and Joe are proud that their son Paul is working alongside his father in production and is poised to carry on the business with his sister Mia.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Want to impress your guests this holiday season or are you looking for a new cookie swap recipe? Try out my show-stopping Oreo Cheesecake Cookie! This recipe makes about two dozen cookies. Enjoy!

What you will need: • • • • • •

8oz cream cheese 1 stick of soft butter 2 cups of flour 1 1/2 cups of sugar 2 cups of chocolate chips 20 Oreo cookies crushed up (big pieces)

Instructions: 1. In a large bowl place the cream cheese, butter, and sugar, then beat until smooth. 2. Slowly add in the flour. Once added, take the crushed Oreo cookie pieces and chocolate chips and fold into mixture. 3. Place the mixture in the fridge for 30 minutes. 4. Preheat the oven to 350’F. 5. Take the dough from the fridge, use a spoon to scoop the dough into small balls. Place them onto a cookie sheet. Then, use the spoon to slightly flatten them. 6.
