Legal Tip of the Month from Bacon Wilson Whether you love the winter weather or just love to complain about it, snow, ice, and sleet are facts of life here in Western Mass, and they can cause accidents. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has established a rule that property owners must “act reasonably” in removing snow and ice to make their property safe. The best way for businesses to protect themselves is to develop a protocol for preventing accumulation of snow and ice where possible, and for prompt post-storm cleanup. Winter-weather safety doesn’t stop at the front door, either. A business should also be cognizant of secondary weather impacts, such as the accumulation of water from snow melt. The business should also monitor changing conditions throughout the post-storm period, such as snow that melts and then refreezes. Finally, the business should keep an eye out for season-long hazards, like large icicles accumulating along gutters and eaves, and remove them when necessary. In the eyes of the law, a reasonable, responsible business is one that anticipates risks posed by snow and ice and takes tangible steps to ensure safety. Quick and thorough attention to winter weather events will help protect your employees, your customers, and your business.

BANKESB SUPPORTS LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES WITH NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS FUNDRAISER Matthew S. Sosik, president and CEO of bankESB, announced the kick-off of the bank’s 2021 Neighbors Helping Neighbors fundraising drive to help support local food pantries. This marks the first year the bank hosted what it hopes will be an annual appeal, inviting bank customers, employees, and members of the community to donate money toward food pantries throughout the month of November. All donations (up to $2,500 per customer) were matched dollar for dollar by bankESB and the total raised was divided among participating food pantries across western Massachusetts. “Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a great

COMMEMORATING FIFTEEN YEARS OF SERVING THE REAL ESTATE COMMUNITY OF WESTFIELD ARTICLE AMANDA BRODKIN | PHOTOGRAPHY KAREN SLACK PHOTOGRAPHY

Westfield Lifestyle | December 2021

N THE WORLD OF REAL ESTATE, BEING A SUCCESSFUL

AGENT TAKES MORE THAN CONNECTIONS AND KNOW-HOW. Joanne Papadimitriou has been guiding clients through the buying and selling process for more than 15 years. Westfield Lifestyle sat down with Joanne to find out what drives her. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A REALTOR®? Building relationships with people keeps me engaged. I have met clients who became friends and I have friends who became clients. My role doesn’t end when the keys are handed over.

"When you're thinking of buying, selling or investing, always consult with a professional REALTOR®." WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING IN WESTFIELD? I love the sense of community and being part of a very caring town. I enjoy being involved; from being PTO president to Board Member of the Westfield Food Pantry. I also like being a sponsor for community events such as WOW and Kiwanis. Westfield has no shortage of organizations that support the community, and I think it is vital to give where you live! TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I’ve been married to the love of my life for 30 years. We have two amazing children, our son who is 27, and our daughter who is 23. My family is the most important thing to me. Not only do they support me, they are happy that I love what I do. I am truly blessed. WHAT IS IT ABOUT KELLER WILLIAMS THAT HAS MADE YOU STAY WITH THE BROKERAGE? I just celebrated 15 years as a REALTOR®; all of that time has been with Keller Williams. The culture is bar none and our mission statement is incredibly meaningful to me: to build careers worth having, businesses worth owning, lives worth living, experiences worth giving, and legacies worth leaving. Our values are God, family, and then business. A company that embraces and encourages these principles is truly where I belong. IF YOU WERE NOT A REALTOR®, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM JOB?

REALTOR®, Associate Partner, Keller Williams Realty 16 George St, Westfield. 413-244-2970, jpapa@kw.com

This is my dream job! I really can’t imagine having another job that is more fulfilling than helping clients realize their real estate dreams, unless of course, I drove the Cash Cab! CityLifestyle.com/Westfield

So you’ve finally hit the big Five-O. Where did the years go? Have you saved enough? Are your investments in the right place? Are your legal documents and estate planning up to snuff? Do you know where you stand as you enter the Next Phase of your Financial Life? Whether you are in your fifties, sixties or seventy and beyond, you deserve the peace of mind that comes from having the right plan in place for a secure retirement. GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are.” —Anna Sarol

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.

WINTER FLAVORS WITH LOCAL FOOD BLOGGER

CULINARY CREATIONS

LOADED POTATO CHOWDER IN THE WINTER MONTHS, THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN TO COZY UP WITH A CUP OF HOMEMADE SOUP. I love a good potato - whether it is baked, scalloped or mashed. When creating this recipe, I combined my favorite potato toppings to make a Loaded Potato Chowder. Follow my blog on Instagram for more winter recipes @hellofoodreviews.

INGREDIENTS + 6 large potatoes + 1 package of bacon + 2 bundles of scallions + 4 tablespoons butter + 1/2 cup flour + Pinch of salt + Pinch of pepper + 1 tablespoon garlic and pepper seasoning + 2 cups milk + 1 32oz container of chicken broth + 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MADELINE LEBLANC

+ 1 8oz container of sour cream

DIRECTIONS 01 Peel and cube potatoes, boil for 10 minutes. 02 Cook bacon, then chop into bits. 03 Wash and chop scallions. 04 In a soup pot, melt the butter over high heat and slowly add in the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic pepper. Stir until smooth. 05 Gradually add in milk and chicken broth, stir until thick. 06 Cook bacon, then chop into bits. 07 Bring to a boil and add in potatoes and scallions. 08 Mix in chopped bacon, cheddar cheese, and sour cream. Let simmer for 15 minutes and taste test accordingly. Enjoy! Westfield Lifestyle | December 2021
