LIFESTYLE LETTER

SEPTEMBER STYLE Hey West Valley September always feels like a fresh start. The air shifts just slightly, routines return, and with them comes the perfect excuse to reimagine our personal style. This month, we're leaning into all the ways we express ourselves - through what we wear, how we live, and celebrate style in all the ways possible. We’re thrilled to feature a GRWM inspired feature on our cover, curated by yours truly - alongside an interview with an A-List Amazon influencer located right here in Western Mass - Angel Dooley - she blends both approachability and fun with her fashion guides, where she helps you mix investment pieces with more budget-friendly favorites to build a wardrobe you’ll love long after the fall season. That spirit of personal style shows up in so many forms throughout this issue. We also dive into permanent style - jewelry and the meaningful way we wear it, can tell a story and creates symbolism across the seasons. If your version of style involves luxury experience ritual’s - we are also featuring an interview with Mike Johnson (yes that Mike from from the Bachelorette) who's redefining skin-care with his brand, OSHUN. The OSHUN Bar is effective, purely designed, and its beautiful skin-care focused ingredients is definitely its own kind of style in our - style your skin feature. Of course, no issue would be complete without something delicious. In partnership with Cookies by Ray owner Rachel Mengal, we’re sharing a lineup of delicious, dessert-forward cookies + her adorable cookie truck (we are obsessed) that prove a beautifully styled “sweet treat” or well planned special event catering - can be just as expressive as a great outfit. And to round things out, we asked a few of our favorite local tastemakers - Style Icons to share the one thing they swear by. Their picks are as practical as they are personal and serve as a reminder that the best kind of style is the one that feels most like you. Thanks for turning the page with us each month. Here's to crisp mornings, comfy layers, and style that tells a story. Cheers, XO TRICIA GOUIN, PUBLISHER @ W E S T VA L L E Y C I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

There are two kinds of evenings: the ones you simply attend, and the ones you get ready for. This closet? I curated it with a little Elle Woods confidence and a whole lot of fall inspiration. Think rich leather textures, cozy knits, statement prints, bold reds, and just enough leopard to remind us that confidence is always in style. Whether it’s catching up with your girlfriends over espresso martinis, heading downtown for dinner, or slipping away for date night with my husband, getting dressed is part of the fun. I love mixing timeless classics with playful pieces that make every outfit feel intentional without feeling overdone. My biggest styling tip? Start with one piece you absolutely love, then build around it. Add a layered necklace, your favorite handbag, and a pair of heels that make you walk a little taller. Because the best accessory isn’t in your closet—it’s the confidence you wear the moment you walk out the door. Cue the playlist, pour the wine, and let the GRWM magic begin.

BEYOND THE BACHELORETTE, MIKE JOHNSON TRANSFORMED PERSONAL PAIN INTO PURPOSEFUL, SKIN-LOVING WELLNESS THROUGH OSHUN. ARTICLE BY TRICIA GOUIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRITTANY DAWN SHORT

Healing Skin, Naturally

Many know Mike Johnson from The Bachelorette, Celebrity Family Feud, and Good Morning America. What they didn’t see was the painful eczema that quietly shaped his life. His skin became so inflamed, it left both his confidence and comfort stripped away. His allergist described it as one of the worst cases of eczema he’d seen in more than 20 years. Frustrated by “clean” skincare products that relied on water, fillers, and inexpensive ingredients, Mike spent two and a half years searching for something that would truly help heal his skin. That journey led him back to nature and inspired the creation of OSHUN. “Each bar is poured with fresh goat milk from the Philippines, Manuka honey from New Zealand, and olive oil from Tuscany. Nothing synthetic. Nothing filled. Just what the skin already recognizes as care. This is the belief he built Oshun on: that a ritual nourishes, restores, and returns you to yourself.” find OSHUN on IG @skincarebyoshun

For Mike, OSHUN is more than a skincare brand—it’s the solution he wished existed during his own struggle. Every ingredient was chosen with intention, avoiding synthetic fragrances, harsh additives, and unnecessary fillers in favor of naturally nourishing alternatives. Fresh goat milk delivers vitamins and moisturizing fats that help support healthy-looking skin, while Manuka honey and botanical oils work together to gently cleanse without stripping away moisture. Inspired by OSHUN, the West African goddess of beauty, abundance, and fresh water, the brand embraces the belief that caring for your skin should feel restorative, not complicated. Every handcrafted bar invites you to slow down and transform an everyday routine into a meaningful ritual of wellness. What began as one man’s search for relief has become an invitation for others to experience skincare rooted in simplicity, transparency, and nature.

Influence Rooted In Real Life ANGEL INSPIRES MODERN MOTHERS THROUGH AUTHENTICITY, AFFORDABILITY, & MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS. ARTICLE BY TRICIA GOUIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HILLARY LYNN PHOTOGRAPHY

What began as one mother’s search for connection has grown into one of Massachusetts’ most relatable lifestyle communities. When Angel welcomed twins, she quickly realized she needed more than parenting books—she needed other moms who truly understood the beautiful chaos of raising multiples. She started sharing honest moments online, from postpartum challenges to favorite baby products, and fellow mothers responded. As trust grew, so did Massachusetts Mama. Today, Angel offers practical recommendations for affordable fashion, family-friendly finds, home inspiration, and everyday life, proving that authenticity and community remain the most valuable things any influencer can share.

“MASSACHUSETTS MAMA WAS NEVER ABOUT BECOMING AN INFLUENCER— IT WAS ABOUT CREATING THE COMMUNITY I DESPERATELY NEEDED AND HELPING OTHER MOTHERS FEEL SEEN, SUPPORTED, AND INSPIRED.”

Although Massachusetts Mama began as a blog in 2019, it quickly evolved into a thriving social media community where authenticity always comes first. Angel, a former nonprofit professional with more than a decade of experience in fundraising, event planning, and volunteer management, now dedicates her creativity to helping women simplify everyday life while embracing motherhood with confidence. Her philosophy is refreshingly practical: looking stylish, creating a beautiful home, and raising a family shouldn’t require an unlimited budget. From affordable fashion recommendations to Amazon finds, family products, recipes, and home décor, she shares products she genuinely uses and trusts. Her followers know they can count on honest reviews rather than passing trends. Motherhood remains at the heart of everything she creates. As a mom of three—including twins—Angel understands the unique joys and challenges families experience. She openly shares the realities of parenting while encouraging women to remember that becoming a mother doesn’t mean giving up their own identity or personal style. Her passion for home design is equally inspiring. Having purchased and renovated three homes before turning 32, she has transformed spaces ranging from a compact Boston apartment to a spacious home on acreage. Through each project, she demonstrates that thoughtful design is possible at every price point. Whether connecting through Instagram, Amazon Live, Facebook, or her website, Angel continues to build the community she once searched for herself. Massachusetts Mama has become more than a social platform—it’s a welcoming resource where millennial moms find encouragement, practical inspiration, and the confidence to embrace every season of family life. find her on IG @massachusettsmama

Every great bakery has a signature recipe, but the heart behind Cookies by Ray isn’t found on an ingredient list—it’s found in the passion of the baker who believes food has the power to bring people together. For Rachel, baking has always been about more than creating exceptional cookies. It’s about celebrating life’s milestones, brightening an ordinary afternoon, and offering a homemade treat that instantly feels familiar. That philosophy has transformed Cookies by Ray into one of West Valley’s sweetest destinations, where every oversized gourmet cookie is handcrafted with premium ingredients, creativity, and unmistakable care. From classic chocolate favorites to imaginative seasonal creations, Rachel continually experiments with flavors inspired by nostalgia, celebrations, and the changing seasons. Every batch is baked fresh, proving that the simplest comforts often leave the greatest impression. That same warmth extends far beyond the kitchen. Whether greeting longtime customers at local pop-up markets or welcoming first-time visitors discovering her cookie truck, Rachel has built a business rooted in genuine connection. Conversations are as much a part of the experience as the cookies themselves, creating a loyal community that eagerly returns to see what’s coming out of the oven next. It’s this personal approach that makes Cookies by Ray stand apart. Each beautifully crafted cookie reflects the baker behind it—a commitment to quality, generosity, and the belief that sharing something homemade creates lasting memories.

Best Foot Forward Upscale Socks

26

M UST SE E | SHO P P I NG

Fashion accessories have always been about personal expression, and socks might be the most adaptable and affordable way to make your look your own. Upscale Socks is a Springfieldbased company that has been creating original sock designs for ten years. The company offers a collection of styles that are colorful, vibrant, fun, and meaningful, with styles and sizes for the entire family. With no background in retail, Upscale Socks founder Lenny Underwood followed his dream – really! The vision for Upscale Socks came to Lenny in a dream, and the idea took hold. “I like fashion accessories, but it wasn’t an obsession,” says Lenny. Learning how to manage a business through an entrepreneurial training program was the step Lenny needed to get Upscale Socks running. Although most of the designs are Lenny’s concepts, he does work with

nonprofit partners and to support specific causes, such as breast cancer awareness. Between creating designs and overseeing the company, Lenny also works as a photographer. Giving back to the community is an important component of his roles; he teaches photography classes along with business and entrepreneurship. His students range from school kids to senior citizens. Upscale Socks partners with nonprofits through donations and has also provided a college scholarship. Lenny advises those who are pursuing their dreams to stay consistent and driven. “Sometimes spaces like that can be intimidating. Show up, do your best, do things that scare you,” he says. “Being constantly working and chipping away should be the goal.” The future of Upscale Socks will likely bring new products into the mix. Lenny’s goal is to add other accessories. “I think I’m going to start

Permanent Style Expression that lasts.

ARTICLE BY TYLER KING

Beauty & the Brow

Beauty & the Brow

Since breaking out in the late 1980’s, the world of permanent makeup has shed its old-school reputation. Now, the philosophy is anchored in subtlety and precision; creating gentle, hyper-personalized enhancements that flatter the individual rather than mimicking a fleeting filter. Smudge-proof, sweat-proof, and flawlessly yourself without lifting a finger, it builds a foundational aesthetic that’s entirely yours, whether bare-faced or fully dressed up. Located in Feeding Hills, Beauty and the Brow has established itself as Western Massachusetts’ premier destination for advanced PMU. Founded on the principle that cosmetic tattooing should enhance –never overpower– your natural features, the studio brings a high level of artistry, precision, and custom color theory to every treatment.

Your style is your primary communicator about yourself to the outside world. What – or who – you wear, and how you carry it, makes an impression on anyone who looks your way. They judge a book by its cover. They think they know exactly who you are. In a vain-faced world dominated by social media, people are increasingly investing in crafting a unique style that speaks

to who they are, a wardrobe that, in any combination, sends the same message: this is me. Through permanent makeup, jewelry, and tattoos, individuals are choosing to etch their identity directly into their person, a commitment to self-expression that bypasses the morning routine and creates a lasting signature that moves with you through every room you enter.

Studio by A

Originally a viral trend for social flair, permanent jewelry has evolved into an elevated and classy staple of modern personal style. Rather than using traditional clasps, permanent jewelry micro-welds the end pieces together to create a seamless, weightless accessory that can be worn continuously for a never-ending statement. Inspired by simple design, quality materials, and the ability to mix, match, stack, and style, Studio By A is the perfect stop for a permanent sparkle. With collections that feature unique charms, timeless textures, and freshwater pearls intertwined with sterling silver and gold designed to last, she creates fine jewelry that is trendy yet instilled with classic elegance.

Once a rebellious subculture, tattoos have evolved into a mainstream fine art form of high fashion and self-expression. Driven by fine precision, gallery-style studios, and social media curation, visible ink is no longer a taboo thing to cover up, but an intentional piece of art– a permanent accessory– and a defining element of personal style. Premier body art in Western Mass can be found at Iron Ink Tattoos in Chicopee. Fostered in a convivial space for customer and artist collaboration, with a diverse team of skilled artists specialized in a range of styles, the studio provides high-impact custom tattoos from delicate fine-line to bold traditional to vibrant, playful color. MORE THAN

a Bag

A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 32

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y

A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything.

FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME.

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/W E ST VA L L E Y
