Lovely June, we have been waiting for you! At long last, the month of fun, freedom, and fathers has arrived. June is the month when we get back the dues we paid in the long, dark days of January. Having lived in New England for most of my life, there comes a time each year, usually in mid-February, when I start looking at real estate in the South. June’s arrival always puts a stop to that.

Summer is just around the corner. Outdoor dining beckons. Vacation plans are drawing increasingly closer. Yardwork and baseball have picked up where snow-blowing and hockey left off.

June is the time when we pay tribute to the men in our lives. If you are a dad, maybe this is when you reconnect with what it means to parent, or perhaps you spend time honoring your own father and grandfathers. It’s also worth thinking about those other males who play important roles in our lives: the stepdads, uncles, brothers, coaches, neighbors, and friends who help make up our villages.

We hope you will take some time this June to slow down and embrace the people and activities in your life that have the most meaning.

And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say – thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you, as well as to the community around you.

C&M Services Tackles Exterior Cleaning with a Gentle Touch

THE SOFT-WASH EXPERTS HANDLE THE TOUGHEST CLEANING TASKS SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY

Brian Crapser, owner of C&M Services, has always had an entrepreneurial inclination for the cleaning industry. Starting with a janitorial business in 2002, Brian founded his house-washing company C&M Services in 2015. Serving western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut, the business provides soft-wash exterior cleaning of homes and commercial buildings, including siding, roofs, decks, gutters, concrete, exterior windows, and solar panels. Brian is an avid researcher of the best cleaning methods and materials to get the job done. “We focus on cleaning agents and techniques, not high pressure, to clean,” Brian explains.

“People are often apprehensive about pressure washing; it can cause damage to siding, vents, and roofing material,” Brian says. High-pressure washing can also damage window screens, sills, and all types of siding, leaving pressure marks. “The benefit of soft-washing is eliminating the potential for damage to surfaces caused by high pressure and excess infiltration of water into vulnerable areas such as soffits,” he explains. Brian’s wife, Nina, says that C&M Services’ soft-washing is “like a spa day for the outside of your home or business; we bathe your building.”

Free estimates with no obligation are personally done by Brian. While no one is required to be home, Nina notifies prospective customers when Brian is coming to take pictures and put together a proposal if the customer wants to talk one-on-one with him about their cleaning needs. “This process really enlightens customers, because they might want just a

roof wash, but I see issues on the driveway, fence, or other areas,” Brian explains. “They may not have the budget to get it all done at once, but they’ll have it in their files for future consideration. We view it as educating customers to take care of their absolute priorities, and then consider their budgets for additional projects.”

Solar panel cleaning is a new service that C&M Services offers, one they’ve put a great deal of thought and care into. “I’ve done a lot of research; annual washing is recommended by manufacturers to clean off the grime and build-up that rain just doesn’t remove,” Brian says. “We use a specialized soft-bristle brush — not a squeegee — with nozzles that spray purified water, which keeps panels and windows cleaner, longer.” Water is de-ionized through the brush’s filters to remove minerals and contaminants. Brian explains that “the water hits the panel at the same static charge as dirt; opposites attract and like charges repel. Therefore, the water repels future dirt longer than if you squeegee it. To my knowledge, we’re the only company in the area offering this service.”

Nina is C&M Services’ director of operations, creating proposals and scheduling appointments, among many other tasks. “Our proposals are sent via email, with extensive information and photographs and a highly detailed, itemized quote,” Nina explains. She says that current and prospective customers can expect excellent customer service: “I don’t think you can put a price on good customer service; we understand that customers want prompt information and responses.”

Once a job is complete, Brian says, “We invite customers to come out and walk around their homes to show them what their valuable money has paid for.” “It’s the entire experience that we focus on, on a customer-by-customer basis,” Nina adds. “We want to prevent a headache, not cause one. Soft-wash cleaning is the answer to that.”

Making the most of summertime outdoor spaces and living

As the weather warms, people spend more outdoor time at home. Dave Coyne helps people enjoy these spaces through his West Springfield business, Home & Hearth Remodeling and Restoration. Started in 2005, the company offers general contracting services, including dream backyard spaces. Dave explains that there are many different options when it comes to functional outdoor spaces that add comfort and beauty to outdoor living areas.

Dave sees more people enclosing their decks to create a screened-in porch. “The principal advantage of screens is to keep mosquitoes away and make outdoor spaces more comfortable and, given the prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases, make them safer,” explains Dave.

For homes with breezeways connecting the garage to the house, a simple remodel can create a functional and enjoyable space. “A full remodel

usually involves keeping the roof and re-framing the walls, adding large windows and new doors," says Dave. "With a ceiling fan and a small heater, a well-insulated three-season breezeway effectively becomes a four-season room,”

Adding a pool deck to an above-ground pool lets people have a place to relax and keep an eye on little swimmers. Dave doesn’t recommend typical materials such as wood and composites because they get very hot, and instead recommends a PVC material such as AZEK.

“A deck is one of the more affordable living space additions one can make in a home,” explains Dave. Homeowners should plan for a deck that is at least 12 by 16 feet to have sufficient space for a grill and a dining area.

Dave began his career in web development and IT work in the Boston area before moving to West Springfield with his wife and children to be closer to family. His love of craftsmanship led him to build his business slowly and steadily to what it is now — a full-service contracting business with ten employees.

When not building for his customers, Dave does significant volunteer work. He has been a Big Brother, raised money to run the Boston Marathon four times, served for more than 30 years as an alumni board member of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, and is the chair of the Mittineague Congregational Church council.

In addition, he volunteers with West Side Helping Hands, a group of West Springfield volunteers who help disadvantaged homeowners throughout the city to improve the community. “The older I’ve gotten, the more keenly I’ve felt the need to work to make my community stronger,” notes Dave. West Side Helping Hands applications are available in August and September at the Office of Community Development at the West Springfield Municipal Office Building.

As we shift our focus to the outdoors, grilled food, and more time with friends and family, we decided to explore a handful of the area’s most popular craft breweries.

VANISHED VALLEY BREWING CO.

Known for its excellent barbecue and large beer list, Vanished Valley offers more than a dozen beers on tap, with more available in cans.

Vanished Valley’s wood-burning oven produces pizza, wings, meat candy (burnt ends), ribs, brisket, and more. Traditional pub fare, including sandwiches, salads, and burgers made from locally sourced beef, are also available.
