It’s hard to believe that, when my grandmother was born, women didn’t have the right to vote. Maybe this applies to your grandmother or mother. We’ve come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. Until the 1970s, women could not apply for credit cards or a bank account without written permission from a husband, not be fired from a job due to pregnancy--and International Women’s Day remained largely unacknowledged in the United States.
This month, we recognize the enormous strides women have gained, as well as their strength, smarts, and independence. All of us have been influenced by amazing women in our lives, and Mother’s Day doesn’t just celebrate our moms anymore--we acknowledge the female figures who have made us who we are and continue to inspire us, including our mentors, teachers, friends, and neighbors who are unforgettable and irreplaceable to us.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role--connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to women in our area.
In addition to supporting women-owned businesses, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone or video call, or write a letter to the women in your life who deserve recognition for the impact they’ve had on you. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Let’s hear it for the ladies this month!

Photography by Garvey Law LLC Photography by Karen Slack PhotographyWomen often overlook their financial footing—specifically, their wealth management. Kate Zien, a private wealth advisor with Trailhead Financial LLC, is young but far from inexperienced. Kate defines wealth management as answering questions about what people need to do financially, their life goals, and how to maintain a healthy balance.
Kate holds the Certified Financial Planner and the Certified in Long-Term Care designation, her insurance license, and FINRA Series 7 and 66 securities registration with Commonwealth Financial Network. She is part of a three-person team at Trailhead Financial LLC, including her father, Jim Zien.
Trailhead Financial LLC offers investment management, financial planning, and insurance. This includes college, retirement, and legacy planning; risk management through life, disability, and long-term care insurance; debt management; building up adequate emergency funds; and more. “We prioritize clients and form a good fit from a relationship point of view,” emphasizes Kate. "You can ask questions without feeling intimidated before making any commitment.”
“It is nice being a female in the industry, someone clients can relate to. Most advisors are men,” Kate says. “I love my work; it’s a great job.” When it comes to married women, one of the biggest mistakes includes not getting involved in financial conversations. “Finances can be quite intimidating,” Kate says. “It is important to be engaged in the process.”
If women learn about finances such as how to invest, plan, or spend wisely “late in the game” Kate says, wealth management becomes overwhelming instead of empowering. This often occurs following divorce or widowhood. Kate also notes that it’s important for women homemakers to know they can make spousal IRA contributions based on the earnings of their partners and have them put under their own names.
In the case of divorce, Kate first performs a financial analysis of the divorce proceedings, acknowledging that things won't always get settled right away. “We take some time to figure out what your new life looks like and talk through the big changes,” Kate says. “It’s always about making people feel comfortable with what they have and setting them up for success.”
Women should be proactive about establishing estate documents, wills, powers of attorney, and health care instructions. "If you haven’t already set up these documents and you become incapacitated, you can’t then create them. If you need these documents and you don’t already have them, it is too late to get them,” Kate says. She explains that, in such cases, her goal is to be calming and reinforcing. For widows, the details of collecting Social Security benefits are often unclear. For example, if a spouse dies, a widow can start collecting benefits earlier, at age 60.
Kate emphasizes the importance of long-term care insurance and IRA contributions for stay-at-home moms and homemakers. She says the uncomfortable connotation that comes with planning for long-term care insurance, along with the high premiums, often detours women. However, things have changed in the past decade, Kate says.
“Long-term care insurance has become more of a hybrid product with a life insurance policy, and it can have a real benefit to women,” Kate says. “They don’t have to rely on adult children to provide care. It’s a way to look out for yourself.”

Dr. Katrina Banks Owner & Neurologic Physical TherapistConcierge beauty services in the comfort of your own home
ARTICLE BY AMANDA WATERFIELDFeeding Hills-based medical aesthetician Jean Brodowski, RN, of Nouveau Aesthetics is creating a new niche in the beauty services business. Concierge beauty is a great solution for clients who desire a high level of privacy for their cosmetic treatments. Nouveau Aesthetics brings services into the client’s home, providing aesthetic treatments such as Ultherapy (skin tightening and collagen building treatment), HiFu (high-intensity focused ultrasound for fat reduction), B12/Lipotropics (for increased energy, increased metabolism, and weight loss), and Xeomin (a neurotoxin similar to Botox, which can also be used to treat excessive armpit perspiration).
Beyond the comfort factor, another advantage for clients is lower cost. Jean’s lack of overhead means that she can keep her services affordable and accessible to more clients. “Some people think that
charging a lower price means you’re not as good as what you’re doing,” says Jean, “But for us, we have lower overhead.”
“I think everyone should have the opportunity to take care of themselves and feel good about themselves,” says Jean. “I love the way people respond to their treatments and how their treatments provide pleasure and make them look and feel better. I want to make people happy with their appearances,” she says.
Jean spends time getting to know each client. “I try to work with the client and figure out what they’re looking for.” That assessment ensures that clients can get the best results within their price range.
One of Jean’s clients, Louisa, notes that we don’t always age as gracefully as we might like: “We go to the gym, we color our hair, we wear makeup — what makes injectables and medical aesthetic treatments
any different?” Louisa has had Xeomin, Ultherapy, HiFu, and B12 injections.
Xeomin treatments for wrinkles range in price from approximately $100 to $300, with most clients opting for follow-ups every few months. Ultherapy for skin tightening and wrinkle reduction rebuilds facial, neck, and decolletage collagen and elastin, with treatments every 12 to 18 months at a price ranging from $120 to $1,500. Jean notes that the prices for these services in a larger metropolitan area like Boston or New York would be triple the cost. Jean has set up a treatment space within a salon in Wilbraham for out-of-area clients and those who prefer a salon setting.
Jean’s services are all supervised by a medical director—a board-certified plastic surgeon—and a physician assistant nurse practitioner. Contact her at 413.789.1636, jean.nouveau.aesthetics@gmail.com, or jean.nouveau.aesthetics.com.

Identical twin sisters Dr. Alyssa Almeida and Dr. Brianna Almeida are changing the face of women’s health in Western Massachusetts through their new physical therapy practice, Renew Health LLC in East Longmeadow. While they treat all gendered patients, the majority of their patients are women, and they address some of the most pressing issues involving dysfunctions in female anatomy due to infertility, childbirth, menopause, and aging.
Alyssa and Brianna opened Renew Health in January 2021. They hold their doctorate degrees in physical therapy from American International College in Springfield and post-graduate training in pelvic health. Since opening, the reception for their new practice has been “overwhelmingly positive,” says Alyssa. “Our patients have commented on how promptly appointments can be scheduled and how getting to know us before even stepping into the office
feels comforting. They can rely on our practice for quality healthcare focusing on pelvic health.”
“Our close bond and similar interests made starting our business a natural fit for us to work together and pursue our entrepreneurial goals,” Brianna explains. She notes that women often feel embarrassed talking about pelvic health issues, leading them to seek inadequate solutions or avoid treatment altogether. “By creating a supportive environment for pelvic health education and treatment, we have the potential to truly transform the healthcare experience for those seeking the types of services we offer,” she says.
Nearly one-quarter of American women are affected by one or more pelvic floor disorders, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the frequency of these disorders increases with age. Despite the prevalence of these disorders, many women are unaware of their impact
or are too embarrassed to discuss their symptoms with their doctors. Thus, women may suffer in silence with pain and symptoms that limit their activities in daily life. Alyssa and Brianna are dedicated to improving women’s health through physical therapy targeted to relieve pain and symptoms and strengthen female physiology for long-term improvement.
Renew Health’s staff treats urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and bowel dysfunctions such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, ulcerative colitis, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, as well as diastasis recti, the separation of the middle of the "six-pack" muscles that commonly occurs during pregnancy and following childbirth. Mechanical infertility is treated at Renew Health through manual therapy techniques that have been shown to reduce the symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis, two common physiological infertility issues.
Alyssa has over six years of experience as a doctor of physical therapy and a strong commitment to treating complex pelvic floor conditions with sensitivity and trauma-informed care. “My priority is creating a space where patients feel comfortable sharing their stories and goals,” Alyssa says. “Whether they are looking to return to running, or playing with their kids, I take pride in being a part of that process.” She explains that pelvic floor physical therapy is an integral part of this process that can improve the strength, mobility, and coordination of not only the pelvic floor but the whole body. “This holistic approach focuses on the whole person, rather than just symptoms, making it a comprehensive system for healthcare,” she explains.
Brianna Almeida also has over six years of experience as a women’s healthcare provider, particularly in urogynecology. “As a pelvic floor physical therapist, I am dedicated to empowering people to stay active throughout the pregnancy and postpartum journey,” she says. “By providing specialized care and support, I strive to help people maintain their physical health and well-being during this transformative time, so they can feel confident, strong, and capable of handling the demands of parenthood.” She notes that access to pelvic floor therapy is crucial for the postpartum population, yet many women face limitations in accessing this specialized care. “By raising awareness of the importance of pelvic health and advocating for improved access to care, we can help more individuals live their lives to the fullest,” she says.
Renew Health LLC is located at 124 Shaker Road, East Longmeadow. Learn more at renewhealthllc.com or call 413.203.9321.

NEW OWNER ANNE MARIE WHELIHAN HAS A PASSION FOR SEWING AND EMBROIDERY
Walk into the home of Parsons Sewing Connections on Riverdale Street, West Springfield, and you’ll be greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff who are ready to help. If you’re shopping for a new sewing, overlock (serger), or quilting machine, or for sewing, quilting, or embroidery supplies, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in their extensive in-store stock.
Parsons Sewing Connections is an authorized service dealer for Husqvarna Viking, Juki, and Brother machines; these are the brands that they sell, which are well known for their superb quality. Parsons offers repair service and tune-ups for their models of sewing and embroidery machines and sergers, and for machines by White, Kenmore, and Singer. Machine repair and maintenance are done on-site by their experienced technician. They also accept trade-ins of machines and are a retailer of sewing cabinets by Koala and Tailormade.
“We thrive on getting to know our customers and what their needs are. The best part of my day is when we’ve helped a customer and I see how happy they are.”
“I love to sew because it’s relaxing and takes your mind off of what’s bothering you.”Parsons holds a variety of sewing and quilting classes, and more! Parsons sells and services sewing machines and sergers
The business has a long and reputable history. It was established in 1953 by Wally Parsons, and the shop started by selling Singer sewing machines. Soon after, Wally brought his wife into the business to offer sewing and free-motion embroidery lessons. His son was put in charge of machine maintenance and repair.
Today, Parsons Sewing Connections is owned by Anne Marie Whelihan, who purchased the shop in January 2023 after being a long-time employee of Parsons since 1999. “I love to sew because it’s relaxing and takes your mind off what’s bothering you,” Anne Marie explains.
Whether you are new to sewing or have been enjoying the craft for a while, Parsons Sewing Connections offers a wide range of classes, including a basics class that will teach you the mechanics of your machine and starter sewing techniques such as straight stitching, zipper insertion, and making button holes.
Other classes offered include Sewing 102, which teaches how to understand the layout of patterns, what pattern instructions mean, and how to read them. Embroidery and quilting classes also are offered, as well as an “Open Sew,” for those starting or working on current projects. Most classes are kept to a maximum of six students to allow for plenty of individual teacher-student time. If you prefer to learn alone, Parsons can work with you one-on-one.
If you need custom embroidery services on textiles for your business, sports team, or special event, Parsons Sewing Connections can help with that. You can bring in your items to be embroidered and the knowledgeable staff will help you choose the perfect solution that fits your needs, looks great, and offers excellent quality.
“We thrive on getting to know our customers and what their needs are,” Anne Marie says. “The best part of my day is when we’ve helped a customer and I see how happy they are when they leave.”
Parsons Sewing Connections is located at 2005 Riverdale Street, West Springfield. The store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To learn more, visit their website at sewingwithparsons.com or call 413.301.9656.

If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
