LIFESTYLE LETTER 4
Personal style is not only something to consider for workwear. Style is rewarding on many levels: the enjoyment of discovering looks that make you feel confident, the self-care pleasures of visiting a salon or spa, and ele vating your creativity in the ways you show the world who you are. Fashion is a way of getting in touch with yourself, but your style can also include clothes and accessories that are conversation starters with others and dis play your unique flair every day. Honing your fall style also means opportunities to give back. September is the ideal time to organize your closet and pass along the things that no lon ger serve you for others to enjoy. In this issue, we feature Suit Up Springfield, an organization that collects and curates menswear for individuals in need of formal wear for new job opportunities and other occasions. We wish you a stylish autumn with plenty of quality time with friends and family!

personal branding, and design work. You’ll see her work on real estate signage through out the area, in addition to headshots for professionals in many industries. A relentless optimist with an enthusi astic nature, Karen is vocal in her opinion that beauty is not about perfection, and that her goal is to capture her subject’s inner essence. She has a devoted following on social media, where she posts tips for getting the best out of your photo session. Her marketing videos are endearing in their messaging: embrace yourself with all your quirks and enjoy the journey.
Push through fear: The bottom line is that fear of judgment is what keeps us from put ting ourselves out there and showing who we are. So I ask myself, if someone doesn’t like me and what I’m doing, can I live with that? And the answer is yes, because no single human is liked by everyone. Comparison is a trap to avoid. I refuse to compare myself or my work to anyone else. This keeps negativity from taking root so that I can continue to put my best efforts into my work. Find your unique style and develop it to best suit you, your goals and your clients’ needs. Your business and marketing should reflect you and no one else. Authenticity builds your reputation and your ability to serve your clients with integrity.

Menswear for a job interview is necessary but often costly, yet there’s no denying that a profes sional presentation is critical. Other occasions, such as weddings and proms, also call for formal attire. When resources are limited but a man needs to look his absolute best, Suit Up Springfield provides a much-needed solution. Located at 139 State Street in Springfield, it offers an extensive showroom of style. Chris Martin, board president, notes that the organization helps men obtain suits, and also offers “mentoring and connecting them with the proper channels to attend job fairs, achieve employment and overall become professionally minded.” A full suit is $50, with proceeds going toward store rent and utilities, but most clients qualify for free. We asked Chris to share about this fabulous organization. THEIR JOURNEY THE WORLD OF WORK

Why, how, and when did Suit Up Springfield get started?
Suit Up be gan as a social media campaign founded by Justin Roberts in 2014, and a storefront nonprofit in 2015. We’ve forged many relationships with other organizations, including the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, rehabilitation centers, shelters/missions, veterans’ nonprofits, and more, to reach our demographic. Suit Up moved to its new location this spring, one that’s easily accessible via public transportation. Now we’re forg ing deeper ties not only in the local community, but in the state. We’ve suited up over 4,000 men since our inception. How can men get menswear and style advice from your organization?

How does your organization impact men’s lives?
When they face the mirror suited up, clients stand up straighter, smile, a nd show inner confidence. Many have mul tiple barriers to building their careers, so if we can remove the obstacle of clothing, we can then focus on building the men in our community up. Numerous men have received jobs with suits they have worn to career fairs and interviews, and we conduct tie tying tutorials in schools and community programs. We also fit teens for prom and allow them to enjoy their special evenings.
How can people donate clothing, money and volunteer time to Suit Up Springfield?
Our store is open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday to receive clothing and monetary donations, and at other dropoff times as arranged. People can also donate money through our website, and can message us on our website or Facebook to volunteer. We’ve held suit drives, secured funding for rent, util ities and programs, and received proceeds from charity events. The community in general is also very generous with their cloth ing donations and valuable volunteer time. We’re incredibly grateful for all the support we receive.
What’s your favorite part of being the board president of Suit Up Springfield? It’s getting to meet those that come in for a suit, listening to their stories and backgrounds, sharing some laughs and being someone in their corner as they strive to reach their goals. Meeting so many dedicated people in the community that help our organization and witnessing the talents and passion of the Suit Up Board and volunteers is also tremendously rewarding.

In 2016, Kevin completely remodeled his store to accommodate full service for suit sales; he also added a rental division for events such as wedding and proms. Because Formal Affair has all of its attire in stock at the store, even last-minute needs can be fulfilled.
Upon arrival, every Formal Affair customer is mea sured and consulted about their desired look, be it a traditional fit or the newly popular slim fit. Color coordination with accessories and customers’ wed ding or prom partners’ outfits is also carefully con sidered. Kevin keeps abreast of all the latest trends, brands, colors and accessories and is a stickler for the in-person experience.
MIDDLE RIGHT: The tuxedo is always an elegant classic CIRCLE: Formal Affair owner Kevin Kousch For men who are concerned about quality and fit in their suits and formal wear, the West Springfield busi ness Formal Affair, located at 581 Westfield Street just past Liquori’s Pizza, offers a total experience that ensures a custom fit and complete satisfaction. Owner Kevin Kousch opened Formal Affair in 2008 after Yale Genton closed and he saw an opportunity to provide men in Western Massachusetts with in-stock inventory and custom tailoring. Yale Genton’s highly experi enced tailor, Zeza, followed to become Formal Affair’s in-house tailor.
Customers can see and touch all of their options instead of taking their chances on items that are at a separate warehouse. And Kevin doesn’t just take care of your suiting needs; he also has in-stock shoes, ties, vests, suspenders, and other accessories to complete your look to perfection.

WHY IS TAILORING SO IMPORTANT? You can buy many things online, but it is almost always prob lematic in terms of size and fit. Formal Affair carries on the tra dition of outfitting all our guests with our in-house tailor shop. Choose a suit from us and you can have our tailor give you the exact fit and look you desire. Formal Affair is one of the last brickand-mortar retail businesses in the area that offers this level of service to make sure our guests look their best.
Slim pants are in versus wide pants; pleats have been out for years, but the single-pleat pant is gaining popularity. In suits and formalwear, solids are hot, but plaids are through the roof. SUZANNE LOONIE IS A MASSACHUSETTSBASED STYLE INFLUENCER
STYLE vs FASHION
Massachusetts-based influencer Suzanne Loonie focuses on style for 50-plus and tall women. We asked her to share what style means to her: What’s the difference between fashion versus style? If I love fashion, am I stylish? If I have great style, am I fashionable?

Oscar de la Renta said, “Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.” Style is personal. It evolves with age and life circumstances. What your style was in your twenties may or may not be your style today. Style is an individual’s way of expressing them selves through clothes. Your style is a reflection of you. Fashion, on the other hand, is based in a particular period in time and is about trends. Fashion changes. You may lean into some fashionable trends, but not others. Just because an item of clothing is on trend, it may not fit your personal style, but that does not make you any less fashionable. My name is Suzanne and I am A Tall Drink of Style. I am all about timeless, classic style. I believe if you look good, you’ll feel good in whatever style suits you! You can never go wrong with a classic. Some of Suzanne’s favorites are pictured here: black patent shoes with a statement heel, a classic bag with a Burberry scarf, the Cartier Love bracelet, pearls in three colors, a gold clutch with tassel and ring handle, and Tory Burch sunglasses. Suzanne can be reached at atalldrinkofstyle61@gmail.com, on Facebook at A Tall Drink of Style, and on Instagram @atalldrinkofstyle.
