An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in his life to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle, or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life who has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. I have had the privilege of having some incredibly generous, loving, creative, and inspiring men in my life, especially my father and stepdad, who have been supportive of every move I’ve made – they have held me up when I’ve struggled and celebrated my successes. I have the gift of brothers and male friends who bless my life with friendship and Y chromosome balance. My greatest gift, my son Andrew, is a joy to know and has helped shape me as a person with his lessons, humor, and kindness. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

Leah Kenney, PA-C has been a physician assistant for more than 24 years, initially spending 21 years in plastic surgery, but also worked in urgent care and addiction medicine. Hunter Termite and Pest Management Prioritizes Transparency and Accuracy
West Springfield’s Mark Hunter has figured out what is important in life. As a business owner, his concern with honest and appropriate customer service is his top priority. He launched Hunter Termite and Pest Management last year and is bringing his blend of experience and integrity to the residents and business owners of our area. Mark has worked in the industry for more than 20 years and decided last year that the time was right to go into business for himself. With a focus on wood-destroying insects, Hunter Termite and Pest Management prioritizes personal attention for each customer and stresses the importance of getting an accurate assessment of your situation before tackling the problem. Mark holds a Category 43 commercial license, which focuses on termite control; this level of training is more specialized than a standard applicator’s license. When it comes to addressing homeowners’ pest problems, it is important to work with a specialist with the proper license and training. “Transparency and honesty are important,” says Mark, noting that oftentimes, companies or home inspectors don’t distinguish between termites and carpenter ants. However, the two treatments vary greatly in cost and need to be treated differently. “I am here to help people. I want to be straightforward and honest with customers.” He notes that homeowners can save themselves money in the long term by getting a pest

inspection every few years. Paying $50 to $150 to identify issues early on can save a lot of money and trouble down the line. An informed approach of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) helps homeowners balance effective prevention and treatment. Mark’s business ethics are easy to sense as soon as you meet him. His integrity and “do unto others” philosophy grew out of his early years, which were incredibly difficult. A native of Springfield, he entered the foster care system as a teen and spent the next six years struggling for survival. An introduction to one of Jehovah’s Witnesses was the turning point. At age 20, he began studying and applying Biblical principles and started turning his life around. Now happily married and the father of a daughter, Tia, Mark notes that his principles are based on the Golden Rule. “I am here to serve. There is hope for anyone who is struggling,” says Mark. “There’s always hope. A bad past doesn’t have to hold you back.” He has shared his story of growth and renewal as inspiration for thousands of people at conventions and assemblies. Balance is important to Mark and he prioritizes family, friendship, and his love of the outdoors. With his wife, Nancy, Mark enjoys the flexibility that his work provides. The Hunters enjoy traveling, particularly to Southeast Asia, and Mark is a snowboarder.

Armando is involved of all aspects of the work.
Armando Ruiz has automotive service in his blood. The owner of A&S Tires Plus knew from his earliest days that he would operate his own business. The accomplishments of his father, who had a service shop, and his uncles helped him form his own vision of success. “The dream was to have a family business… My dad gave me exposure to the auto service industry and helped my business savvy as well…I wanted to follow in his footsteps, but I saw an even bigger vision,” says Armando. Since opening on St. Jacques Avenue in Agawam in 2017, A&S Tires Plus has continued to thrive and grow thanks to Armando’s dual focus on industry currency and customer service. A&S is a full-service automotive repair shop. Tire sales are just one aspect of what the shop offers. Detailing, brakes, and engine repair are among the services A&S provides. Respect for his customer’s time and money are the basis for Armando’s business philosophy. “We try to make people educated consumers,” says Armando. “We want to show you transparency.” All services come with a visual inspection, video, and photo assessment. “We offer a dealer experience without the dealer price tag,” says Armando, noting that a free car wash and shuttle service are part of the service. It’s always been vehicles for this Springfield native. “I have always loved cars and everything about them – I love being able to work on my own vehicle. If it weren’t cars, it would be business for me. I always have had a passion for business and entrepreneurship – building something from nothing,” he says.
“When I first started, I was doing a lot of the work, but as we have grown, I have passed on my standards and principles to my team, ensuring that my employees are holding up those standards. Now I’m more focused on the customer side of things,” he says. “I want customers to experience something they’ve never experienced before.” He points out that a fair price for service is only part of what makes up a great customer experience. Armando also prioritizes respect for the customer’s time and their happiness with the communication and transparency of the repair process. “Clear communication is the foundation of trust and rapport,” says Armando. “I want to focus on building solid relationships and forming trust with our customers.” The inspiration for the integrity and drive that fuel the business comes from Armando’s family. In addition to his own dad, he had two uncles who took an interest in his development as a young man and whose thriving careers whetted his own appetite for success. Personal development is another area that is a priority for Armando. The teachings of business leaders such as Grant Cardone, Tony Robbins, and Henry Ford have been instructive and inspiring. “Anyone who was financially successful in the industry and left behind clues – I was interested in that information and still am,” notes Armando. Ultimately, pride in the reputation and standards of A&S Tires Plus is what matters most to this business owner. “Quality service at competitive pricing. We live by that.”

Located at 255 Elm Street, they have been dedicated to providing their loyal customers with quality service and delicious sweets made with care for decades. Tony Cerrato opened the doors of his bakery with the passion of a pastry chef and the drive of a business owner. He moved from Italy to the States when he was 20 years old, already having ten years of baking experience that translated into pure talent in the kitchen. “He had a dream to have his own business, and it was very successful right from the beginning,” said Cerrato’s wife, Rosa. Rosa has taken over the business since her husband’s passing in January 2020. Their daughter, Bella, has been committed to the family business as well, becoming the lead pastry chef and continuing the legacy of her father with grace and perseverance. Bella grew up in the kitchen, watching and working alongside her father as he mastered products and recipes for the 32 years he operated the business. Now, it’s her turn to continue his establishment and make it her own while staying true to its roots. Cerrato’s Pastry Shop has maintained their staple recipes while also expanding their menu as they see fit. “We’ve added new pastries through the years as things have become trends,” reflected Rosa, particularly mentioning their French macarons and hot chocolate bombs. Around Easter this year, Bella made special chocolate eggs, which are called l’uovo di Pasqua in Italy. They had small gifts inside of them to be true to the Italian tradition. The pastry shop employs a handful of full-time employees, some of whom have been working there for over a decade. Their customers and staff have acted as pillars to keep the business going and growing over the years. WEST SPRINGFIELD LOSES A BELOVED COMMUNITY MEMBER

West Springfield lost a beloved leader earlier this spring with the passing of Tony Di Giore. A longtime Rotarian, Tony was the epitome of the organization’s “service above self” slogan. He was a music educator in town for over 30 years, and he helped create the West Side Summer Concert Series. Tony’s contributions also extended to the West Springfield Arts Council, on which he served for many years. “Tony’s enthusiasm for music was contagious,” says Rotarian Dave Griffin. “He was truly one of a kind and will be sorely missed.”
