Starting Fresh

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Amanda Brodkin | amanda.brodkin@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Kelly Hawkins | kelly.hawkins@citylifestyle.com

I don’t ski, I don’t skate, and I don’t own a house in the islands, so the winter is a time for me to bundle up and stay cozy at home. However, I do love the turnover from the old year to the new. For me, the start of a new year is a time for reflection and renewal. If you’re someone who makes New Year’s resolutions, you might be seeking ways to improve your wellness. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, strengthen your body, improve your finances, or simply indulge in some beauty treatments, we have everything you need right here. I am so impressed by the innovation, determination, and grit demonstrated by our business community. The owners and employees of the restaurants, services, and shops in West Springfield and Agawam are working incredibly hard to provide quality and value – showing their true colors in a time of challenge and uncertainty. Fortunately, 2021 brought more than just adversities. During the past year, I was blessed to make new friends, have exciting adventures, and discover additional things about my community. My wish is that 2022 will bring even more growth for us all.

EXP E RT H E LP | FIN AN CE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

As January arrives, most of us focus on improving our physical health, but we shouldn’t overlook getting our finances in shape too. However, many people don’t know where to begin when it comes to navigating the complex world of money. Connecting with a knowledgeable, experienced, and trustworthy financial planner is a great place to start. Susan Alvanos, a certified financial planner with Alvanos & Associates in Feeding Hills, provides sound financial guidance. She and her team will ensure that you receive personal attention and the answers to all of your financial questions at any stage of life. Her company, a fiduciary that puts the needs of their clients first and foremost, is a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC. Susan carefully listens to her clients, understands what they want to accomplish financially, and helps them reach all of their fiscal goals in the most efficient and effective manner. When first meeting with clients, she tells them the most important words to financial fitness are, “Investing early pays off.” She

shares that by taking that advice, “It provides a lifetime of opportunity for terrific growth.” With over 22 years with Ameriprise, Susan has witnessed that successful growth, not only for her initial clients, but for generations of their families as well. She assists people with every milestone: new careers, home purchases, children’s college tuition, retirement, and updated estate documents because, as Susan says, “Anything can happen to anyone at any time.” The theme of family is prevalent at Alvanos & Associates. Susan’s husband was also a financial planner for 37 years before retiring, and she shares that she is honored and fortunate that two of her three sons now work with her. She also believes, “Clients are family.” A significant part of her customer base comes from personal recommendations. There is no better compliment than being highly recommended to one’s family and friends. Susan shares that many of her clients ask themselves, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” Avoid having this regret yourself by contacting Alvanos & Associates today at 413.821.9380. NAMASTE SUPPORTING YOUR PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING THROUGH YOGA

Learn. Practice. Heal. Restore. Transform at Amy Bourque Yoga, located at 470 Westfield Street in West Springfield, provides a place for members of our community to come together with these sentiments in mind. Amy Bourque, founder and owner of the studio, has dedicated her life to teaching yoga and other similar lifestyle practices in order to share a love that she discovered years ago. As a teenager, yoga-like stretching and a healthy, balanced regimen quickly became a pillar that enhanced the stability of her life. “It was a routine that was just for me which helped me step away from the hecticness of life, feel balanced, and tame anxiety,” says Amy. Nearly two decades ago, Amy took the leap and began practicing yoga formally. At this time, she also began diving into the world of Ayurveda, a type of alternative healing medicine that she refers to as “a sister science of yoga.” Then, her life changed. “The combination of Ayurveda and practicing yoga felt like I was coming home,” recalls Amy. “It helped me manage stress and feel some sense of sanity.” Years later, Amy was ready to take this lifestyle to a new level – she enrolled in a formal teaching program and began instructing yoga classes. During that time, she practiced and studied Restorative Yoga, Mindful Yoga Therapy, Reiki, Ayurveda, Thai Yoga Body Work, and completed a 500-hour yoga training program. She then realized, however, that she wanted more than to just teach these things -- she wanted to have her own studio. In 2016, Amy Bourque Yoga opened in Springfield. Since then, however, Amy realized that she wanted to own a business in her hometown of West Springfield. Her Westfield Street studio, Transform at Amy Bourque Yoga, opened in 2018.

Amy’s studio offers a wide range of practices for individuals of all abilities and experience levels. They have a variety of hot, warm, gentle and stretching yoga classes, meditation, Ayurveda and sound healing meditation workshops, transformational healing sessions, and much more. In addition, they offer training in Reiki, Qigong Infused Yoga, and will also be presenting a 200-hour Transform Yoga Teacher Training in the upcoming year. As a lifestyle practice, yoga is physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy. It allows for individuals to get in touch with themselves on a different level than ever before, and it encourages them to feel better in their own bodies. “It is not about competing or looking a certain way or impressing others. You don’t have to win or get to the finish line. You just practice and allow the transformation to take place without judgment,” says Amy. The benefits of yoga are greater than just enhancing flexibility and strength. Amy shares that yoga is also shown to help with pain, trauma, digestion, sleep, anxiety, and depression. There are several additional yoga instructors at the studio, all of whom are highly trained with many years of teaching experience. “They all offer something unique and are attentive to students’ needs,” says Amy. “We value that we [are] more than a yoga studio. We are here to help guide students and hold space through the transformation process.” Individuals of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to sign up for classes at Amy’s studio. Participants must register in advance on her website, AmyBourque.com, where all of the studio’s services as well as additional information can be found. There are also different payment plans, including paying for single classes, bulk-class buying options, and even an unlimited monthly selection. Visit Transform at Amy Bourque Yoga to improve (or maintain) your physical, emotional, and spiritual health for 2022 and beyond.

Greta’s Beauty Bar Greta’s Beauty Bar offers seven types of facials, specializes in PhiBrows semipermanent eyebrow microblading (realistic eyebrow creation), and also does PhiRemoval and small tattoo removal. Services recently added to Greta’s Beauty Bar are dermaplaning treatments and body waxing. A graduate of Springfield Technical Community College’s cosmetology program, Greta has over a decade of experience in her field. She also completed graduate-level coursework at The Dermal Institute in Boston. After working for someone else, Greta made a drastic change to her life. “It so happened that I had to make a decision: to work for someone or to overcome fear and start realizing my plans, expectations, and letting big dreams become reality!” she says. Greta began renting out a room to create her dream beauty space, and everything fell into place. “Time flew so fast: days, months, years... I was immersed in my work, at the same time I was designing, nurturing, and creating my dream studio,” she reflects. “I wanted every visitor, client, friend, and co-worker to feel at home.” “I would be wrong if I said that I had achieved everything by myself. Without the help of friends, without the care of Steve and Pavel (Salerno Properties), I would definitely not be where I am now,” she says. “And here, after a few years of hard work, I’m where I want to be, where Greta’s Beauty Bar is right now.” Greta’s Beauty Bar, 430 Main Street in Agawam, has been committed to making clients feel beautiful and confident in their own skin since 2017.

WHERE HOPE LIVES CANCER HOUSE OF HOPE PROVIDES SUPPORT AND CARE

28

G IV IN G BAC K | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

A cancer diagnosis often brings with it fear, pain, and endless questions. West Springfield’s Cancer House of Hope is an environment where members can come to receive support, treatment, and tools to navigate the challenging path ahead. CHH program director Margaret Toomey leads a team of staff and volunteers who are dedicated to the comfort of their members. The organization, located in a cozy house on Westfield Street, offers yoga classes, bra and prosthesis fitting, support groups, specialized massage therapy, art classes, professionally fitted wigs, and much more.

Program Director Margaret Toomey

The independent nonprofit has been supporting members since 1999. Margaret emphasizes that CHH members are fighting all kinds of cancer and that services provided are sponsored through fundraising efforts such as the annual golf tournament at Twin Hills or the Luminaria event in December. “We plan to broaden our hours to offer night therapies,” says Margaret. The list of member resources is long, and “everything is not for everyone,” according to Margaret. For example, CHH offers therapeutic horseback riding, kayaking, pickleball, and other activities. One of the most well-known services is the wig boutique, which provides fittings done by professional stylists. Like all of the offerings at CHH, wigs are available at no cost to members. In addition to the services, classes, donated items, and support programs, CHH also has gardens and a pond where members can meditate or enjoy the outdoors. A canine ambassador, Abby, is available for snuggles for those members who enjoy dogs. To support CHH, call 413.733.1858 or email mtoomey@chd.org.

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 32

F IT N E SS | WEL L NESS

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
