Local, Family-Owned Salons Since 1978

We are not only a close-knit team of nearly 100 employees, but more importantly we are one big family! Many of our staff have been with us for over 20 years, like Rachel Monroe. In this testimonial, Rachel shares what it means to her to be a part of this company.

Ross the Boss & Rachel Monroe a company

“In May of 2002, I was finishing my junior year of high school. I stumbled into Ross the Boss when my cosmetology instructor had scheduled me to go out and shadow a local salon. Unbeknownst to me, I was at the wrong location. They had no idea what I was talking about when I got there but they were gracious enough to talk to me and show me around. You’ve heard of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, right? Well apparently, that day I was in the wrong place at the RIGHT time because when I left that day, little did I know, I’d be coming back there sooner than I thought. My name is Rachel Monroe and I just celebrated 20 years with RTB.

“Our purpose is to create an environment where people can experience professional excellence and genuine love”

When I started as a 17-year-old, I knew I had a lot to learn but I was up for the challenge. I always wanted to put my best foot forward. I never intended to make a career of this job but the longer I stayed, the more I grew and learned (both personally and professionally). I developed relationships with customers and made lifelong friends among my peers. Having a passion for hair, I studied all the hair care products on the shelf so I knew them forwards and backwards, and so I could be confident answering questions and helping customers make a decision. Before long, my retail numbers were looking really nice and I was getting recognition for them at our annual awards banquet. This was such a motivating factor for me (recognition and pats on the back). This inspired me to keep going and push myself to hit those goals. Before I knew it, I had been presented with a new opportunity...Salon Coordinator, a management position! That was in 2007 and so many doors have opened for me since then. I’ve been to conferences and training in Hilton Head, Atlanta and most recently Scottsdale, Arizona, not to mention the numerous business gurus and hair artists from around the world that we’ve had the privilege of training with. I have grown and learned so much professionally, developed so many friendships, and made countless memories along the way from these experiences. I’ve watched people come and go over the years, and although business and the world change, the one thing that hasn’t changed is my love for my job. That love comes from the people I work with, the customers who have literally watched me grow up, and the company who has believed in me and pushed me and who makes me feel valued and appreciated. I’m so very thankful for being in the wrong place at the RIGHT time that day.”

As always, we are grateful to have recurring partners and experts in our community that contribute to our pages each month. We hope you’ll enjoy this month’s driving tour from the Knoxville History Project, as well as financial and legal advice from PYA Waltman and TriAmicus Law.

With the changing of the seasons comes an opportunity for a refresh, whether that means your wardrobe, your style, your home, or anything else that’s a reflection of you. As the warm days wane and Knoxville shifts into its most beautiful season, embrace opportunities for the kind of change that brings you joy.

This month, we talked to Lori Gano about her most personal endeavor yet – the renovation of her century-old Queen Anne Victorian home. Lori’s been in the reno business for 26 years, and though she’s remodeled previous homes she’s lived in, this one is different. The house is a work-in-progress, but what Lori has accomplished so far is nothing short of extraordinary. We also visited Ross the Boss headquarters and got a big warm welcome into the upbeat salon. Ross Badgett IV and his family have a long history in Knoxville, so the name and brand is likely familiar to anyone who’s lived here since the 80s and 90s. R&Co Salons are a great place to go if you need a new hairstyle, but it’s also a great place for stylists who want to strengthen their career in a supportive environment. If you had corn in your garden this summer, or you’ve picked up a bunch from the Farmer’s Market, then we have a recipe for you!

Rachel Abbott Davis is a homesteader who knows all about how to make the most out of your crops. Her great-grandmother's recipe is one you won't want to miss.

If you have a story idea for us, drop us a line! We love hearing from readers and connecting with other businesses in our great city.

A DRIVING TOUR OF SOUTH KNOXVILLE

The mission of the Knoxville History Project (KHP) is to research, preserve, and promote the history and culture of Knoxville, Tennessee. Through research and engaging programs, KHP tells the city’s stories, focusing on those that have not been previously told, and those that connect the city to the world. KHP’s sto ries, programs, and publications educate and help residents and visitors understand the city’s past and its complicated but dynamic heritage, and also to inspire an appreciation for the city’s culture. Learning about a city’s history makes one more aware of its geography and its build ings, leading to a better sense of place. KHP’s downloadable driving tours of Near-West, North, East, and South Knoxville provide opportunities for residents to discover and appreciate the many historical landmarks found throughout Knoxville that can be seen easily from a vehicle or explored on foot.

Starting at the south end of the Henley Bridge, this 22.6-mile-long driving tour of South Knoxville makes a broad loop around the largest, and least linear, of the city sectors. The tour takes in notable Civil War Forts, industrial icons, sections of the Urban Wilderness, and a few neighbor hoods, cemeteries, and literary sites that inform the city’s culture. Chapman Highway was built in the early 1930s, expressly to connect Knoxville more directly to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The road is named for Col. David Chapman (1876-1944), wholesale drug executive, Spanish-American War veteran, and conservationist who became known as the Father of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Notable on the left after the bridge is the Kern’s Bakery building, founded by German immigrant Peter Kern, who originally based his business on Market Square. Long after his death, his company, now a larger and more specialized industry, built this bread factory in 1930, and used it for the rest of the century. It is now under

Suttree Landing is named in honor of Cormac McCarthy’s 1979 novel, Suttree, which is set along the riverbanks of Knoxville, ca. 1951. A couple of scenes in the gritty novel take place near here, including one where the title character’s ditches a stolen police car in the river. One of Knoxville’s newest public parks, the site has a deep heritage. Here, by 1880, was a half-mile oval horse-racing track, making good use of this unusually flat patch of floodplain. It was rented and promoted by Cal Johnson, who grew up in slavery, but prevailed as a creative and suc cessful businessman. He loved horses and horse racing, and rented this space in the 1880s and early 1890s, during which it was used by both white and Black sportsmen, for both horse and bicycle racing.

Out on Maryville Pike, on the southern edge of the city sector, lies Mt. Olive Cemetery, notable for its extraor dinary monument to the memory of those who died on the Sultana , the Mississippi riverboat that exploded near Memphis at the end of the Civil War in April 1865. The riverboat was carrying Union soldiers recently freed from Confederate prison camps. Among the approxi mately 1,200 who died were scores of soldiers from East Tennessee, several from South Knoxville. Although 400 miles from the site of explosion, this 1916 monument is believed to be the largest monument to America’s worst maritime disaster.  Island Home Park is a residential community distin guished by marble pillars at two entrances off Island Home Avenue. Containing approximately 200 homes, for many years it remained close yet detached from downtown, separated by, until recently, the stagnant post-industrial corridor along Sevier Avenue. Major developments since 2005, including the growth of Ijams Nature Center and Urban Wilderness trails, plus business developments began changing the dynamics surrounding the neighbor hood. Adjacent is the Tennessee School for the Deaf, a statewide educational institution that dates back to 1844 (the school was downtown for its first 80 years) but moved here in 1924 on the former “Island Home” showplace of merchant-prince Perez Dickinson (1813-1901) from where the community gets its name.

For some, it is second nature, but for others, there is sacrifice in setting aside money each month for the future. Making savings automatic (scheduled monthly transfers to savings) can be transforma tional in our overall financial picture.

• Selective Enjoyment: In his book, “I Will Teach You to be Rich,” Ramit Sethi says this: “Spend extravagantly on the things you love and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don’t.” Spending money on the things that bring you the most joy is a great way to live your best financial life, but what is equally important is cutting back in the areas that don’t support a healthy balance in spending or bring you joy.

Just as the French fashion philosophy of quality over quantity stands the test of time, there are similar foun dational principles to a successful and healthy financial life. Much like the Chanel blouse, these principles are timeless, but may require significant (but lucrative) sacrifice to start. Some of the financial principles that come to mind are:

on the front end, the payoff in the long run is priceless: timeless style through many seasons of life despite countless uses and outfit combinations.

The opinions expressed herein are those of PYA Waltman Capital, LLC and are subject to change without notice. This article is not financial advice or an offer to pur chase or sell any product.

I took French in middle and high school. While I may only remember how to ask for the time and order a coffee, learning the intricacies of the language and culture grew my appreciation for the French lifestyle exponentially. Throughout my sophomore year, many of our learning units focused on fashion, which was basically my dream.  After all these years, the one thing that sticks with me about how the French view their wardrobes is that they prefer quality over quantity. Globally, our world is one of fast fashion and consumption. I am guilty of this, as I enjoy trying trends, which usually results in articles of clothing worn an embarrassingly low num ber of times, only to be donated shortly thereafter. The French are strikingly different from most of us in the United States. I am generalizing, of course, but based on our textbooks, many French people have a surpris ingly small amount of clothes that make up a capsule wardrobe of sorts. Each piece is intentionally curated to be worn multiple times in multiple ways, all while maintaining classic style. Perhaps they spend a bit more on a designer blouse or a leather pair of loafers, but the quality is sure to uphold years of wear. And who would not get excited about wearing a Chanel blouse each time the opportunity presented itself? (Not that I can relate, but a girl can dream.) While the cost is greater

• Have a Plan: Rainy days and unexpected things will happen from time to time, so it is important to have a plan with clear cut goals to refocus you during uncertainty.  The more consistently we implement foundational habits, the more peace of mind we will reap through time. For so many, financial freedom is a daunting task, but perhaps all it takes is a few consistent pieces and some time-tested principles to complete the outfit.

• Spend Less Than You Earn: My grandfather has always told me to “watch the pennies, and the dollars will count themselves.” Saving is not always easy.

“The whole reason I got into construction was because I bought my own house at 18. I had some mod eling contracts and was traveling a lot, and so I rented my house out while I was gone. The renters trashed it,” she says. “My dad met me out there, and I said I was gonna fix it all myself, and he said I didn’t know what I was doing. We got in this big fight about it, but I did it. I renovated it myself and fell in love with it.”

What came after has been a 26-year (so far) career in construction as a general contractor, an architec tural interior designer, and a real estate agent. From large-scale custom builds and renovations to buying, selling, and consulting, Lori’s done it all, including some work for HGTV and other commercial projects.

“My passion has always been renovations and bring ing new life into something that’s existing,” she says. “I naturally have this spirit of excellence and wanting something to be the best it can be.”

“I actually lived across from this house for 12 years. I’d purchased a home across the street and knew I’d live in it for a brief time because I was on the hunt for a 100-year-old property in the city, eventu ally for my mom and adult daughter to live on the property with me,” she says. “I set up the office in my old house in the front room and could see this house from my window. I never thought I’d buy it, but I appreciated it so much. Then, I noticed the neighbors were putting boxes on the front porch. We saw them stop to get their mail one day, so I yelled across the street to ask them if they were selling. They said yes.”

Learn more about Lori at LoriGano.com

Lori has done this dance a handful of times – buying a property, reworking it entirely, selling it, and moving on. But lest one thinks she flips houses, let it be known that’s not a word in her vocabulary.

“My friends and producers give me a hard time with that word,” she says, laugh ing. “I pour my heart into renovations. It can change everything about the flow of the house, how it affects the family. Even in real estate, when I walk into a home, it’s easy for me to pack up 30 percent of peo ple’s belongings and rearrange the furni ture, which I do for free for my clients. It’s a huge investment for them and people are shocked at the difference it makes.”

The previous owners had lived in the home for 30 years and had raised their fam ily there, but it was time to pass the keys to a new owner. Since buying the house in April, Lori has been chipping away – liter ally – at giving the home new life. She was quick to update the dark walls to Pale Oak, a soft white that brightened the space and helped the stained-glass windows pop. She has plans to rebuild the cantilevered staircase with more support (it currently sags) and will rework the master bedroom with an en suite and glorious closet. She is keeping the details that give the home its character but she’ll dress it up to match her personal style.

“I’m an organized person and don’t like a lot of clutter or bold colors. You’ll see that most of what I have is white walls, but I do love big pieces of artwork and streamlined furniture,” she says. “Light fixtures are probably my favorite component. That’s the jewelry of the home.”

“I set up the office in my old house in the front room and could see this house from my window. I never thought I’d buy it, but I appreciated it so much.”

And that’s exactly the energy she’s putting into her newest endeavor, Lori’s most personal project to date: renovat ing her 1885 Queen Anne Victorian home.

Characterized by the asymmetrical facade, stained glass windows, and decorative trim work, Lori’s new-to-her home, purchased last year, is getting a slow-and-steady full reno. It’s an on-going labor of love that, when finished, will boast classic details with her comfortable modern aesthetic.

Jessica Howard and Ross Badgett IV

“Our purpose is to create an environment where people can experience professional excellence and genuine love. If you do these two things, you’re good with me,” says Ross. “No other job can do what we do. It’s the power of our business. Updating someone’s style? We have a ton of power in our hands. I can make you look better than you’ve ever looked, and if you leave happy, I’m ecstatic. There’s a weird power of relationship between the hairdresser and client. I promote it.”  Can you get the latest styling trends at R&Co? Of course you can. Updating education and techniques are crucial to the success of any salon. That isn’t what makes Ross the Boss so special. When it boils down best practices, Ross has a list of must-haves that includes paid vacations and 401Ks.

CONTINUED >

“When Ross took over, I can speak as a stylist and say that we were glad that someone who stood behind the chair was going to run the business,” says Jessica Howard, who worked as a stylist at R&Co for 16 years but had to step back due to health reasons. Ross IV kept her on staff in an administrative and marketing position.

If you’ve lived in Knoxville since the 80s and 90s, then Ross needs no introduction. It’s a name and face, or at least a brand, you likely remember because Ross Badgett III of R&Co Salons made sure of it. When he purchased two bankrupt Fantastic Sams and moved his family to Knoxville, Ross went straight to advertising the renamed and rebranded salons with the sort of loud and comical advertising that his daughters found mortifying. But not his son, Ross Badgett IV, who took over the business a few years ago. Ross IV was in second grade when his father bought the Fantastic Sams salons, and when he came of age he had to make a big life decision – College? Military? Join the family business?  Obviously, he followed in the footsteps of his namesake, but not just as the owner. Ross IV started in the family business as a stylist.

37| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTKNOXVILLESEPTEMBER 2022

“I want my stylists to be able to make it on their own. This is their career, and I want them to make great money and have health insurance,” says Ross. “I’ve been here over 25 years, and it’s rare in the salon space, particularly now that a lot of stylists are doing booth rents.”

“I want my staff to live a better life. I want to spread the love and have more people come and be a part of it,” says Ross. “Depression is through the roof, and I’m desperate that my place is different, that you can come in and be safe and laugh. If you work here, you’ll make money and not worry. I want to make that a more popular option.”

Truly, Ross wants all of his employees - more than 100 of them - to have good, productive, happy lives. He endeavors to spread joy wherever he goes, and if he makes people laugh along the way, then that’s even better. In the end, Ross doesn’t want his stylists to worry. He wants them all to love their jobs.

“I don’t think people realize how successful you can be in the salon industry,” adds Jessica. “When you tell people you’re going to hair school, people question it. They underestimate that you can make a good living. I can speak for stylists and say a lot of us feel comfortable coming in here to talk about their personal lives or get advice or help. He isn’t ‘the boss’. He is part of this family.”

HOMESTEADER RACHEL ABBOTT DAVIS REVIVES HER GREAT GRANDMOTHER’S RECIPE

40

Rachel Abbott Davis and her husband John own and operate J&R Farms in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and have built a life rooted in their collective Cades Cove ancestry. They raise and process their own hogs, chickens, cattle, and garden, along with raising four children, while teaching others about the homesteading life on Instagram (@jandrfarms_mama).

DAVISABBOTTRACHEL This tried-and-true corn relish recipe is straight out of Rachel’s Great-Grandmother Minnie Grindstaff’s canning recipes and is a per fect way to preserve a summer harvest. (Rachel prefers the corn relish without cabbage.)  INGREDIENTS • 12 ears fresh corn • 1 large cabbage head, shredded  • 6 small garden onions, or 1 or 2 large onions • 6 bell peppers • 2 red sweet peppers • 2-4 Jalapeno peppers  • 2 cups sugar • 1 quart vinegar • 1 tbsp. salt • 1 tbsp. ground mustard INSTRUCTIONS  1. Boil the shucked corn cobs in water for about 5-10 minutes to make cutting them easier. Cut the kernels off the cob, then cook corn and vin egar together for 20 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and cook for 30 minutes.  2. Ladle hot mixture into hot, sterilized jars, leaving half an inch of headspace. Secure with clean lids and process jars according to approved water bath canning instructions. Don’t forget to label your jars! It’s that time of the year again: parents are getting back into a school routine with their young ones, summer vacations are in the rearview, and it’s time to gear up for sporting events, homework, and extracurricular activities. As parents, we try to leave no stone unturned when it comes to preparing these young minds for the future and making sure they have all the tools and experiences to be ready for the real world. However, we don’t apply the same hands-on approach when it comes to those tough life matters, such as preparing crit ical estate planning documents to protect our loved ones.  Julie D. Eisenhower is a Certified Estate Planner.  Our com bined experience with complex and simple estate planning, probates, trust administrations and conservatorships is what makes us stress the importance of the following:

Families with a child(ren) with special needs have to shelter assets in order to ensure their loved ones do not lose the benefit of life-saving government financial support as well as ensure their loved one is not at risk of being financially exploited by others. The best time to create a Special Needs Trust is when your child is diag nosed, but if you have not done so then please talk to an attorney immediately.

School’sSession

The age when a person reaches the age of majority is the best time for them to get their estate planning started. It is critical to decide who will be in charge of making medical decisions or financial decisions for any adult in case they are incapacitated or unable to make their own decisions.

1. FEES, FEES, FEES

The average attorney fees and expenses billed to our estate planning clients is only 30% of the average amount of attorney fees and expenses incurred in probates with no Will or conservatorship cases resulting from no Power of Attorney or Advanced Care Directive.

3. REMARRIAGE AND DISINHERITED CHILDREN

This scenario has become all too common and under standably so with the statistics surrounding divorces and blended families. Stories of children of one spouse losing their entire inheritance due to poor estate plan ning has become the norm to some extent. Simple wills leaving entire estates to the surviving spouse and then to the children seem to work well for traditional two parent households, but unfortunately create an unplanned night mare for many children when the surviving spouse is their step-parent. Step-parents have no legal duty to care for their step-children and step-children and are not legally recognized as the step-parent’s next of kin.
