Happy Summer!
July 2022 PUBLISHER
Marc Rochelson | marc.rochelson@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Jennie Treadway-Miller | jennie.miller@citylifestyle.com
We’re in the peak of summer, and that means many of you are enjoying vacations or looking forward to something you’ve planned months ago. If Paris is on your itinerary, whether this summer or later this year, we have a handful of tips for you to make navigating, dining, and visiting attractions in the City of Light more enjoyable. (And if you aren’t planning to visit Paris, perhaps we’ll inspire you to go!) If you’re staying local this summer, perhaps a historic driving tour is more your style. The Knoxville History Project has you covered. This month, they’re sharing a few spots in North Knoxville worth seeing, which is part of a larger series of driving tours encompassing all of Knoxville. We treasure our partnership with KHP. If you want to learn more about the history of our great town, please visit their website at KnoxvilleHistoryProject.org. Read the blog, attend an event, or peruse the many galleries of historical photos they’ve cultivated. We also talked to Jeff Jorgensen of Farm to Feast, a chef who works with his family to host private dinners on the family farm in Hardin Valley. He and Jessica (his wife and business partner), along with his sister Heather, pull together incredible events with exquisite local food. If you’re on the hunt for an event location this fall, give Jeff a ring. Seriously. As always, we are pleased to bring you legal and financial advice from our partners at PYA Waltman and TriAmicus Law. These folks have the best in mind for our readers, and we are so fortunate to have their expertise readily at hand. If you have a story idea or want to feature your business in West Knoxville Lifestyle, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out on social media or drop us a line in email. Happy Summer, Everyone! At the end of 2015, I set the goal of reading a different book every week of the upcoming year. If I was successful, I would read 52 different books over the course of 2016. Fast forward to the end of 2016 and I surprisingly had completed the tall task. For a brief moment in time, I was proud of myself and the accomplishment, until one question from a friend changed that. She simply asked, “What was your favorite lesson learned from all the books you read this year?” At that moment, panic set in. Not only could I not remember what my favorite lesson was, I couldn’t remember a single thing that I had learned from any of the books I had read that year. I had been so focused on checking the box of reading a book each week that I forgot to take the time to enjoy them and learn from them. I had bought into the lie that quantity is better than quality.
While I may not have learned a lesson from any of the 52 books I read, I did learn a big lesson from the experience - I would have been better off to slow the intensity of my reading pace and increase the quality of my retention. This principle of slowing the intensity and increasing the quality can be applied to many areas in life, even in personal finance and investing. Over the past decade, the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early) has gained a foothold in our culture. This strategy encourages young people to save up to 75% of their income so that they can retire very early in life. What most people don’t realize about this movement is that saving so much money so quickly normally has a very negative impact on those who participate. One of two things can happen to these people, they either become so brainwashed by saving all their money that they forget what it feels like to spend money, or they get so focused on retiring early that the journey to get to that point is miserable. Often these people would have been better off over the long run to slow the intensity of their savings and increase the quality of their life, even if it meant that they had to retire a few years later. Reading, saving, and financial independence, are all very good things to pursue, but even good things can become unhealthy when the intensity gets ramped up too much. At PYA Waltman, our approach to financial planning centers around helping you find the balance between setting realistic goals and living your best life now. Our values-based approach to financial planning helps us understand who you are and what is important to you, so that we can help you set realistic goals that fit your life. explore knoxville on a historic driving tour
ARTICLE BY JACK NEELY AND PAUL JAMES
The mission of the Knoxville History Project (KHP) is to research, preserve, and promote the history and culture of Knoxville, Tennessee. Through research and engaging programs, KHP tells the city’s stories, focusing on those that have not been previously told, and those that connect the city to the world. KHP’s stories, programs, and publications educate and help residents and visitors understand the city’s past and its complicated but dynamic heritage, and also to inspire an appreciation for the city’s culture. Learning about a city’s history makes one more aware of its geography and its buildings, leading to a better sense of place. KHP’s downloadable driving tours of Near-West, North, East, and South Knoxville provide opportunities for residents to discover and appreciate the many historical landmarks found throughout Knoxville that can be seen easily from a vehicle or explored on foot. The North Knoxville 8.2-mile tour starts on North Gay Street, winds through Emory Place, taking in two historic cemeteries before proceeding north along Central, east through the Lincoln Park community to Broadway and back to the starting point. Sharps Ridge Memorial Park, just off Broadway, atop a long, linear ridgetop drive offers surprising views of downtown Knoxville.
The area’s oldest institution, Old Gray Cemetery, established in 1850 as Knoxville’s first “garden cemetery” was designed to be a beautifully landscaped place, with trees and flowering shrubs that would attract visitors. It’s the resting place of thousands of both prominent and forgotten Knoxvillians, especially of the Victorian era. Immediately adjacent, and in stark contrast to Old Gray, is Knoxville’s National Cemetery, established by Union Gen. Ambrose Burnside as an emergency of war in 1863. About 3,500 Union soldiers were buried here, both Black and white, and many marked “Unknown.” The tall Union monument, originally built with a different design in 1900 was destroyed by CONTINUED >

The name was apparently inspired by an Irishman named Kavanaugh who noticed how many farmers coming to market in a mule cart would break down at the bottom of the hill, get stuck in the mud or break an axle. It seemed to him a perfect place for a saloon, and he established one there in 1885, marking the start of a commercial center known for entertainment. Nearby Brookside Cotton Mills, established in 1885, was one of Knoxville’s biggest employers, and many of its workers spent their spare hours in Happy Holler, which eventually became home to several bars and pool halls and a movie theater, the latter now housing Central Cinema. The Original Freezo on N. Central, may now be one of Knoxville’s oldest places to eat. a scout camp outing. A “skyline park,” first proposed in the 1920s, finally came to fruition in 1943, when the city purchased part of it as a war memorial park. The road was completed the following year. Soon after the war, the location attracted television and radio stations to build high antennas with regional reach. East Tennessee’s first local television station, WROL-TV (later WATE) broadcast from here in 1953. Today, numerous mountain bike trails have been incorporated into the park. Off Broadway, back towards downtown, is a neighborhood, once considered part of old North Knoxville but known since the early 1970s as Fourth and Gill. Noted for its modest-sized Victorian homes, the neighborhood makes for a pleasant stroll. Of special interest is Central United Methodist Church, a major brick and stone edifice built between 1925 and 1927 designed by R.H. Hunt of Chattanooga, then already famous for Atlanta’s “Tabernacle.” Learn more at KnoxvilleHistoryProject.org. Summer in Paris TRAVEL TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST VISIT
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIE TREADWAY-MILLER
After two long years, with travel restrictions eased, people are ready to pack up and go somewhere. Recent statistics show that travelers are willing to spend a little more and go a little farther to make up for lost time. If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that time is fleeting. Paris consistently makes the list of places Americans want to visit, and for good reason. In every sense of the word, Paris is romantic. There are monuments and museums in every district and architecture of every style. You can eat in Michelin star restaurants or pop into a quiet corner café for Croque Monsieur and a glass of rosé for only a few Euros. You can shop in Chanel or buy inexpensive street art from a local painter. Stay a week or a month, and you’ll never do the same thing twice. If Paris is on your itinerary this summer, then take a few tips from us to help make your vacation a little more enjoyable. CONTINUED >

If Paris is on your itinerary this summer, then take a few tips from us to help make your vacation a little more enjoyable.
For the first-timer, navigating Paris can be overwhelming. After all, American cities aren’t laid out in a spider web of 20 districts with a metro and train system that looks like a plate of spaghetti. Before jetting off to Paris, take some time to study the layout of the city’s arrondissements, as well as what attractions lay inside them. A good starting point is The New Paris Metro Map (metromap.fr/en), which is a comprehensive yet easy-to-read digital map of the city available for download. It has all the biggest tourist spots labeled so you can navigate the districts via public transportation. Keep in mind that the Metro (M, or Metropolitan railway) is the city’s subway system, while the train (RER, or regional express network) goes beyond the city limits. You can get everywhere you want to go inside Paris by sticking to the Metro, but if you want to make day-trips to other areas in France, you’ll want to explore the RER system. If you’re only staying in Paris for a few days, you can purchase a multi-day Metro pass with unlimited stops (called Paris Visite) for less than €40 a person. However, if you are staying in Paris longer and want to visit places outside the city, such as Versailles, Disneyland, or a city in another region, it’s worthwhile to invest in the Navigo Pass, which has myriad options depending on your needs. Regardless of the transportation you choose, download the Metro Paris app, a comprehensive and interactive navigation map that includes the Metro, RER, and
tram lines within central Paris. Not only is it easy to use, but the app works offline, so you won’t have to use international data or WiFi to figure out how to get from your hotel to the Eiffel Tower. Dining in Paris is another one of those areas that can be exciting yet overwhelming. The options are seemingly endless, but a good rule of thumb is to avoid going to places immediately next to big tourist attractions. Prices will be higher, and the food won’t be as Parisian as you might hope. Instead, look for the tucked-away restaurants and smaller cafés, which likely offer better food at more reasonable prices. Brush up on your French, not only out of respect, but so you can better navigate menus and understand what you’re ordering. For example, Americans are used to getting iced water at the table for free, but that’s not the case in Paris, or in most of Europe for that matter. Ordering water almost always means ordering sparkling water in a glass bottle and paying for it. So, if you want regular tap water to sip on, order “une carafe d’eau.” The server will bring a liter of tap water for the table to share, usually at no charge. Here’s a tip: Download Google Translate – specifically the French language – so you can use your phone to help read menus and communicate with your server. Downloading the language means you can use the translation service offline. However, if you want to refresh or refine your French, consider hiring our local Knox French Coach and tutor, Sébastien Crépieux. (KnoxFrenchCoach. Wordpress.com).

Expect to sit longer in restaurants and cafés, as Parisians take dining seriously. No one rushes through a meal, so it can be 15 minutes or longer between each interaction with your server. Instead, embrace the European way of breaking bread with friends and family. Savor each bite, put your fork down, and enjoy the art of people watching. Also, if there’s a place where you know you want to eat while in Paris, be sure you know whether or not you need a reservation. Many restaurants require it. Without a doubt, the big name museums and attractions warrant a lot of visitors each year, so adjust your expectations regarding lines and wait times. In fact, as you plan your trip, it is worthwhile to buy tickets to places like the Eiffel Tower before you even leave the States, particularly if you want to visit the top floor. Those tickets are limited and may not be available on the day you want to go. (The Louvre is another high-traffic tourist attraction, so pre-ordering tickets and getting in line early will be helpful.) If crowds aren’t your thing, consider visiting one of the many other museums Paris has to offer, such as Musée Carnavalet, a museum about the history of Paris in the 3rd Arrondissement, or the Musée Marmottan Monet in the 16th Arrondissement, which boasts two floors of exhibitions from various artists, including a permanent collection of Monet’s work on the bottom floor. If you’ve never been to Paris, a good first stop is Galeries Lafayette on Haussmann in the 9th Arrondissement, directly across from the Palais Garnier (Opera House). Galeries Lafayette is a high-end department store chain, but this location is its flagship store and boasts brands from reasonably priced to haute couture.
26
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L
Not only is the opulent art nouveau style of the domed building worth the gaze, but visitors are invited to the store’s rooftop free of charge for an incredible view of the city. Before you leave Galeries Lafayette, grab a quick snack and use the free restrooms. Another free view of Paris is from atop the hill in Montmartre at the Sacré-Cœur in the 18th Arrondissement. The Metro can get you close, but you may have a small hill or staircase to climb, so be mindful of the potential hike. On a clear day, you can see the expanse of Paris from one spot. While nothing tops the view from the Eiffel Tower, it is also one of the most expensive and crowded views you’ll pay for. The Arc de Triomphe in the 8th Arrondissement is less expensive and provides a unique view into one of the busiest roundabouts in the city. Here’s a fun idea – record a time-lapse video of all the traffic circling the Arc. It will make you grateful you’re using public transit!
A FEW MORE TIPS: • Be sure your credit/debit cards have the contactless “tap to pay” option, as many establishments don’t provide swiping or chip options. Keep cash (Euros) on hand in case your cards fail. • Check the French calendar as you plan your trip. Recurring bank holidays mean many establishments could be closed on a day you want to visit. • When booking a hotel or AirBNB, consider staying outside the city limits to save money and provide a slower-paced stay. Vincennes is a great option, which is a small, impeccably clean and safe suburb on the edge of the 12th Arrondissement with its own castle and two Metro stops. You’ll still get the Paris experience without the high price and bustling streets.

slb the agency For the Athletes, By the Athletes Q&A with Derrick Furlow, Jr., Fred White, and Chris Lofton Sports. Life. Business. University was just the first step in the journey toward the creation of SLB The Agency. Derrick Furlow, Jr. transitioned like a champion as he went from college football to becoming a successful author, motivational speaker, and businessman. Derrick’s passion has always been empowering others, so when I scheduled our first meeting regarding the progressive next step and combining his years of life and work experience with the firm’s legal backing, it was evident that we were on the cusp of creating a one-stopshop for all of our athletes’ needs. Combining our unique experiences with our respective businesses and our passion to help others brought us together, but that was just the beginning. The next step was collaborating with Derrick’s vast network of former athletes. Hear from Derrick and a few other former Vol athletes — Fred White and Chris Lofton — who have joined the team.
MITAL: DERRICK, FOR THE ATHLETE DECIDING TO SIGN WITH AN AGENT, WHY THIS AGENCY? Derrick: This is an agency that’s for the athlete by the athlete. With that being said we understand that you’re more than an athlete. That’s why we are taking the holistic approach you won’t find with many agencies. We want to help you develop in sports, life, and business. So regardless of what your future holds, you become elite on all levels of life. That’s what you get when signing with us – real life practical experience from those who have walked in your shoes.
MITAL: WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS THE FORMER ATHLETE AGENT APART FROM THE REST? Fred: This agency, at its core, is based on teamwork. We all have a role that is just as important as the others. Also, working with people who share the the idea of servicing all our clients with honesty, integrity, and character. I want to become an agent to give athletes what I didn’t have as an athlete, to give knowledge beyond the playing field. The landscape of college athletics is changing. I want to use my experiences in athletics and business to educate current and future athletes to take advantage of the opportunities in front of them. Chris: I think back to my time in college and I didn’t have a lot of knowledge about being a college athlete and then, when it was over, how to transition into real life. I want to make sure I help out as many athletes as I can along their journey as they play college sports, possibly into a professional sports career, or as they transition from sports into all of the other areas and phases of their life.
MITAL: WHAT CAN YOU SHARE WITH THE READERS ABOUT WHAT IS TO COME? Derrick: We are combining business concepts and strategies that will be unique to this agency and refreshing for our athletes. This is about providing all of our athletes with the guidance, tools and resources to give them the advantage they deserve by those who have been where they are at. FARM TO FEAST & SHE DIGGS FARM A FARMER AND A CHEF OFFER PRIVATE EVENTS ON THEIR FAMILY FARM
ARTICLE BY AMY CAMPBELL-ROCHELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAROLINE TROTTER

DESCRIBE FARM TO FEAST. Essentially, Farm to Feast offers private chef services and small event space on my sister’s farm in Hardin Valley, Tennessee. We seek to create dining experiences like no other — meals where you are welcome to the table to taste not only great food but also a sense of belonging while being connected to the source of the food itself — the farm. The main way we do this is by hosting private dinners, so that you can sit around our farm table with your family, friends, or colleagues while enjoying the fruits of the garden and overlooking the beauty of the farm. These multi-course, customized menus are based on your group’s needs. They are usually served plated (but sometimes family style) in an unhurried and unpretentious setting. We also serve our clients by going into their homes to make hosting a dinner party a breeze for them, still utilizing our produce from the farm and sourcing from other local farmers as much as possible. In a world where “farm to table” may have become a bit of a cliche, we have to admit it doesn’t get more “farm to table” than this.
WHO MAKES UP THE TEAM OF FARM TO FEAST? I (Jeff Jorgensen) am the Chef. That is my job title, but being a chef on a farm means that on any given day, you could either find me checking out what’s coming up in the garden to get inspiration for our next menu or being followed around by our chickens as I take scraps out to the compost pile! I got my undergraduate degree in hospitality and have spent years in the restaurant industry, learning from the best. After graduate school, we moved back to Knoxville and started on the path to starting our
own business. My wife, Jessica, helps with many areas of the business but is often behind the scenes. She designed much of our kitchen and event space and now works many of the events at the farm. She loves finding ways to add small touches to the experience we offer — everything from greeting our guests to setting a beautiful table. We have a lot of fun working together! And, of course, Farm to Feast wouldn’t be what it is without She Diggs Farm and my sister Heather Fulghum, the farmer. The whole thing is truly a family affair. We also have a small team of awesome individuals who help with our events in various ways. We couldn’t do it without them.
GIVE US A BRIEF BACKGROUND ON JESSICA. Jessica got her undergraduate degree in hospitality and event planning and her masters in professional counseling — and while at first glance, those may seem to be totally unrelated fields of work, for Jessica, they aren’t. She is passionate about caring for others through many avenues, and the dinner table is no exception.
YOUR SISTER HEATHER OWNS SHE DIGGS FARM IN HARDIN VALLEY. TELL US A BIT ABOUT HER AND HER FARM. As far back as I can remember (and since she’s my sister, that is a long time ago), she has been passionate about animals, plants, and food. She works hard at everything she

sets her mind to, so when she and her husband Billy decided to buy a farm in Hardin Valley, I knew it would become something great. Heather employs no-till farming practices, which really goes beyond just farming organically. It also includes other sustainable practices like working with the natural resources available, using traditional tools, and utilizing the land well. It’s amazing how much produce she can yield from a half-an-acre garden. The farm has Kunekune pigs, a heritage breed, as well as mules, ducks, two farm dogs, a rabbit, and of course, lots and lots of chickens. Some of her crops include peas, tomatoes, eggplant, corn, peppers, squash, cucumber, and various greens. She also has all kinds of herbs and wildflowers. She grows year-round, but the garden in summer is truly a sight to behold (and smell and taste)! Farm to Feast’s field kitchen is located on She Diggs Farm, and there is a covered patio that overlooks the farm where the events are held.

WHAT IS NEXT ON THE CALENDAR FOR FARM TO FEAST? Our summer calendar is almost full of private events already. However, a few dates are still available, and of course, it’s not too soon to book for fall (which I must say is such an ideal time for dinner on the farm). For those who are interested, they can reach me at Jeff@FarmToFeastKnox. com to book a private event. Neuropathy Relief Is Possible The most common treatment your medical doctor will recommend for neuropathy is prescription drugs. While this may temporarily reduce your symptoms, medications such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, often causing pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating symptom, balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. Every part of the body relies on blood via blood vessels, for oxygen and nutrients. Without it, the body begins to lose function.
When the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased, they shrivel. This prevents the nerves from getting the nutrients necessary to survive. The nerves begin to degenerate and no longer conduct sensation adequately.

person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. We will conduct an exam that consists of detailed sensory nerve testing and an analysis of neurological findings. After the exam, you will meet with the doctor to discuss your results and determine if you are a good candidate for our program.
When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, burning, pins and needle sensation, and other symptoms.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells.
