Mike Messer knows East Tennessee – Growing up and owning businesses that span from Chattanooga to Johnson City, the switch to real estate was an easy one for me. Knowing the region this well, the rest is dedicated to impeccable service. It’s no secret that inventory is low around here, but that isn’t a barrier for me. My long standing relationships in the area give me the unique ability to tap into off market properties. If you’re looking to sell, I know how to maximize your home’s potential and find the right buyers.

When we got word that Master Distiller Jeff Arnett was leaving Jack Daniel’s and coming here to invest in our community, we put his name on our list of people we had to talk to. He, along with other movers and shakers in town, formed Company Distilling and will be opening its first tasting room in Townsend later this summer. Now seemed like the perfect time to put his story – and Company’s – in our Gentlemen’s Issue. If you enjoy craft spirits, then you’ll love our cover story on Jeff, how Company Distilling came to be, and how they are keen to keep Townsend the Peaceful Side of the Smokies. We also talked to Sam Lazim, owner of Estate House, who specializes in one-of-kind jewelry pieces, luxury watches (and watch repair), and the buying and selling of estates both locally and across the country. He is a sixth-generation jewelry maker who started from nothing and built a beautiful life in Knoxville. Sam is never short on gratitude and maintains a stainless reputation in the antique, estate, and jewelry world. We are so pleased to share his story with readers. This month, Jack Neely and Paul James from the Knoxville History Project invite readers to go on a driving tour of historical landmarks and notable places around town. They’ve collected photos and details and organized four easy-to-read maps for North, South, East, and Near-West Knoxville. This month, they spotlight a few locations on the Near-West Knoxville map. In full, the tour boasts more than 30 spots along an eight-mile drive. Their knowledge about our city and dedication to preserving its history is unmatched. Finally, we hope you’ll enjoy the recurring legal and financial advice from our experts at TriAmicus Law and PYA Waltman. We are so grateful to have them on our team. To those celebrating Father’s Day, we celebrate with you! Most sincerely,

AN INTERVIEW WITH SAM LAZIM AT ESTATE HOUSE

When Sam Lazim moved to Knoxville in 2004, he’d been kicked out of his country where he was a missionary and ended up in the care of a local church. The kindness he experienced here sparked the desire to set up a new life here with a family and build a business in the way his father had taught him. Sam is a sixth-generation jewelry buyer, seller, and maker, and for nearly 15 years, he’s been serving the Knoxville community with his expertise. “Jewelry is personal,” he says. “When someone gives you jewelry as a gift, they have to think about you as a person, what you like, when you were born. It should match the personality of the person. I believe every piece of jewelry should have a story and be different from other pieces of jewelry. That’s why I’m not in the business of brand new items, where there are 20,000 of the same piece.” Initially, Sam started Estate House under a different name – Treasures of the Tigris – in an attempt to capture the regality and esteem of Iraq, but it didn’t translate as well as he’d hoped. In the end, Estate House better represents what he and his team do. In addition to being a place where customers can buy a piece of jewelry for a special someone, it’s also a place that manages entire estates, from coins and cars to furniture and artwork. They’ve even purchased entire houses if need be. The world of estate sales and auctions is a sweeping one, and Sam has learned how to maneuver in that world seamlessly. “Experience tells me what something is worth,” he says. “I go to auctions, both online and in person. I also participate in the biggest shows for jewelry and estates. We’re going to Vegas in June for the Antique and Jewelry Show, which is the largest show. Vendors come from all over the world, so our business is not just in Knoxville. Today I have a watch I received from someone in Hong Kong.” Luxury watches are a particular interest of Sam’s. He follows the market with a keen eye, and in the last three years, the demand has been increasing.

“If you buy a Rolex from me, I’ll always want to buy it back from you. We have people who buy watches and lock them up in a safe. Then, three or four months later, I know they have them, and I may have a customer looking for one, and then that person makes money on it. Luxury watches are better than gold and silver right now.” Photo by Margaret Loveday

“In the last three years, the value of luxury watches has gone up, maybe as much as 300 percent. It can be hard to find luxury watches, but you find them here at Estate House,” says Sam. “And we guarantee the purchase. If you buy a Rolex from me, I’ll always want to buy it back from you. We have people who buy watches and lock them up in a safe. Then, three or four months later, I know they have them, and I may have a customer looking for one, and then that person makes money on it. Luxury watches are better than gold and silver right now.” Additionally, if you own a luxury watch and it needs some measure of repair, Estate House is the place to go. Wolfgang Christian, whose father was a watchmaker, is retired from Rolex but keeps his skills fresh at Estate House. This is notable since not everyone is comfortable sending their watches out to be fixed. “It’s a dying trade,” says Wolfgang, who can work on all makes and models of luxury watches right there in the store. “There are people who will try, but it’s hard

to find a good watchmaker. They tinker and call themselves watchmakers, but they aren’t.” Estate House is currently in the process of moving locations, which marks a pivotal moment in the business. The new location in Bearden (5002 Kingston Pike) is currently being renovated to meet their needs, but the goal is to move there this summer. “We’ve built a good reputation, and it’s amazing because in this business, it’s all about who you are,” says Sam. “I go back to the idea of service. I love this community. Knoxville made me who I am. I came here homeless, with nothing. People here were so kind and generous to lift me up. We have good people we do business with, and we’ve proved that we’re trustworthy. “Give us a chance to serve you the way you deserve to be served,” Sam continues. “I want people to try us and see what we have. They’ll stick with us for sure.” Visit Estate House at 8373 Kingston Pike, Suite 900, or online at EstateHouseUSA.com.

A GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL INVESTING

16

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

COMPOUNDING Albert Einstein once said compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world. Yet the power of compounding continues to elude many. Why? Because it requires extreme patience and the ability to do nothing. As Brian Feroldi recently wrote, the only way to own a 10-bagger (make 10 times your money) is to not sell an investment that has already risen 100%, 200%, 300%, 400%, 500%, 600%, 700%, and 800%. The holding period returns for some long-term investors is quite impressive, BUT they had to endure significant drawdowns along the way while avoiding the temptation to sell. The following factoid from the book The Psychology of Money demonstrates well the immense power of compounding. $81.5 billion of Warren Buffett’s $84.5 billion net worth came after his 65th birthday.

MISTAKE AVOIDANCE

Warren Buffett is considered one of the greatest investors of all time. And rightly so. His track record is nothing short of remarkable, nearly doubling the compounded annual return of the S&P 500 since 1965. While few will ever be able to match his success, there are valuable lessons to be learned from his investment approach that can make us all better investors.

Mistake avoidance is crucial to investment success. While all investors will make mistakes, it is important to minimize the self-inflicted wounds that work against compounding. One of the biggest pitfalls is attempting to time the markets based upon forecasts or economic events. The global pandemic is an excellent example. Who would have thought after falling 35% in the first few weeks of the pandemic, that stock prices would soar (recording their best gain in years) even in the midst of a voluntary shutdown of the global economy? Additionally, the price of missing out on just a few good days can be quite costly. If you missed the 20 best days in the market over the last 15 years, your average annual return would have been less than 2%! Even if one were able to forecast future events (highly unlikely), determining how the market will react to those events is quite another thing altogether. We would all do well to take the above advice from Mr. Buffett to heart. I highly recommend reading his annual letters. They are full of timeless insights that can help us all on our journey to becoming better investors.

OWNERSHIP MINDSET Buffett employs an ownership mindset when investing. As mentioned in his 1996 annual letter, “If you aren’t willing to own a stock for ten years, don’t even think about owning it for ten minutes.” An ownership mindset instills discipline in the investing process. If you were contemplating purchasing a private business, you would naturally conduct an exhaustive due diligence review to gain a thorough understanding of the business fundamentals and financial strength of the company. Talking to friends and reading a few news articles about the business would not suffice. One should have the same mindset before investing a dollar into a publicly traded company. The advantage of this owner-oriented mindset is that it allows you to focus on the long-term cash generation potential of the business and not the day-to-day swings of the stock price.

Live Your

Best Life Live life pain free! Q: That sounds great, but will it work for me? A:

Every BODY is different. We have high clinical success rates because we are very selective of the types of cases we take on. No two conditions are treated the same, even though patients may present with similar symptoms. The best way to find out if we can help is to schedule an in-depth consultation with our doctors so they can see if you are a good candidate for our treatments. If we can help you, we will let you know what it will take during your initial consultation so there are no surprises later. If we can’t help, we are often able to refer you to someone who can.

Q: I’ve had surgery, PT, injections, and chiropractic already. Can acupuncture still help me? A:

Q: What can a patient expect when they come into the clinic? A:

Q: How long until I start feeling better? A:

Dr. A.J. worked in a hospital for more than 15 years treating patients just like this where they were sent to him after they had tried everything else. He was often seen as the last resort with the best results. Acupuncture is also very complementary and works well in conjunction with the types of modalities you mentioned.

Everyone responds differently, but if you’ve had something for a long time, we tell our patients not to expect a cure overnight. After 20 years of being in practice, the most important thing we have learned is that all long-term healing takes time and consistency.

After your meeting with the doctor, you will get a personalized treatment plan that gives you the best opportunity to get the results you want. The recommended plans are based on the most current evidence-based research and decades of experience successfully treating these conditions.

What types of conditions does your clinic specialize in treating? • Acute and Chronic Pain

• Peripheral Neuropathy

• Women’s Health

• Chronic Conditions

• Fibromyalgia

• Autoimmune Diseases

Becoming the Master Distiller at Jack Daniel’s was never Plan A for Jeff Arnett. The Jackson, Tennessee native studied engineering at the University of Alabama and intended to build a career in the automotive industry. However, after General Motors laid off thousands of employees the year he graduated college, Jeff interviewed instead with Procter & Gamble and landed a job in the food and beverage sector where he cut his teeth, so to speak, studying the sensory sciences of coffee at Folgers. “We’d bring in beans from around the globe and assess them for flavor, acidity, body, and mouthfeel,” he says. Little did he know that developing mouthfeel – the sensation a food or drink creates in the mouth, a concept that overlaps with taste and flavor – would be a skill he’d take into the next phase of his career.

MASTER DISTILLER AT JACK DANIEL’S After ten years with P&G, Jeff took a chance and sent out a resume, and a headhunter approached him about a job with Jack Daniel’s in 2001. Turns out the leap from coffee to whiskey was one Jeff was excited to make. “They needed a quality control manager, and I was lucky enough to interview there,” he says. “I started in the single-barrel processing area, and I’d been there about seven years when the Master Distiller prior to me said he was retiring. They asked me if I was interested.”

Photo Provided by Company Distilling

The answer was both yes and no. Yes to the opportunity, but no, perhaps, to all the required travel. Jeff and his wife had young kids at the time, and the thought of being away while they were so young – five and three years old – gave him pause. Fortunately, the company opted to limit the out-of-town requirements, and Jeff retained his production abilities, a role he took seriously. “Track 1 was under my care – water, grains, and yeast are distilled and mellowed. I was doing it correctly, and that’s what put me on their radar,” says Jeff, “someone who could do that job for them.” His time in Lynchburg was pivotal, professionally and personally. He expanded Jack Daniel’s portfolio from three products to 11 and was awarded Master Distiller of the Year in 2017 by Whisky Magazine. As the seventh person ever to hold the position, working as the Master Distiller for a 150-year old company with a rich history and cultural stamp on Tennessee was bound to leave a mark. And yet, Jeff had already been tossing around the idea of building something for himself, something he could call his own. He’d watched his uncle, Garney Scott, the president and CEO of Scepter, Inc., an aluminum recycling and trading company, do that very thing. Garney graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in engineering and started his career at the Alcoa Corporation. Once he’d reached the pinnacle of what he could do at Alcoa, Garney took the risk and started his own aluminum company, patenting technologies along the way. “He was a role model for me on how to navigate a career, to bet on yourself,” says Jeff. “I felt like the time was right. Success [at Jack Daniel’s] was selling a million cases. That’s not my goal. I want to sell a product that people enjoy and let the cases shake out.”

COMPANY DISTILLING No one set out to call the company Company, nor did they intend to start a business during a global pandemic. And yet, something about all of that time apart, separated from those they cared about, drove the story forward and together. “We didn’t let the pandemic stop us. We’d taken for granted being together, so it’s an appropriate name. We want the brand to be what you think of when celebrating life’s best moments. It’s about the people you break bread with. Mom would say, ‘Clean up your room. Company’s coming over’,” says Jeff. “We value that time together, and that’s where the name comes from. It’s our story.” In September 2020, Jeff announced he’d be leaving Jack Daniel’s, a heartfelt goodbye to great people and hearty hello to what was coming next. He and the other founders of Company Distilling – former president of the Tennessee Distillers Guild Kris Tatum, founder of H Clark Distillery Heath Clark, Clayton Homes CEO Kevin Clayton, and construction executive Corey Clayton – felt the time was right to take a chance. They’d attend events together, like the Grains & Grits Festival in Townsend. It was there where they all started asking, “What if?” It was more than a passing fancy. They wanted to build a brand that’s multi-site and multi-product. After announcing Company’s name and distillery locations in April 2021, the first product – straight bourbon whiskey – was on shelves and in restaurants across Tennessee. Soon, construction was underway in Townsend for their first commercial location, a spot that’s both intentional and distinctive. “We fell in love with the beauty of Townsend. They are thoughtful about developing the area,” says Jeff. “They want it to stay special and peaceful, and we’re going to respect that.” The 4,000-square-foot tasting room in Townsend, nestled against the Little River and across the street from the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, will open this summer and sits about a mile outside the entrance to the national park. It aims to be both a stopping point for passersby and a destination for those who want to experience craft spirits on the Peaceful Side of the Smokies. Though the population of Townsend ebbs and flows with the seasons, the spirit of the core community falls in line perfectly with the principles and values of Company Distilling. “We intend to create destination distilleries, warm and welcoming places that allow you to spend quality time with friends and family surrounded by the natural beauty of our locations,” says Jeff.

22

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Complementary to the Townsend location, and what Jeff’s calls “the mothership”, will be a 20,000-square-foot family-friendly facility in Alcoa’s growing city center. Set to open in 2023, the distillery will serve as Company’s main manufacturing location and is designed to include a tasting room, a restaurant and brewery, and plenty of outdoor space for entertainment and, of course, gathering.

EXPLORATION In the end, it has to be the products – the whisky, the gin – that form the foundation of Company, and there is every measure of success to be made here considering the collective years of professional and personal experience among the founders. Beyond that, there is much more exploring to do. “One of the things we want to explore is going after wood finishes,” says Jeff. “There are 150 hardwood species in the park, more biodiversity than in

all of Europe. That’s why it’s so beautiful when fall comes. It’s nature’s show. That’s represented in all of the trees. Just like different coffee beans have different mouthfeel, so does wood. You can introduce different woods to create natural flavors. You can take the underlying character of the spirit and match that wood to it. That gives us a lane to explore.” Plans for more products are already in the works, such as H Clark Distillery’s award-winning gin, now merged with Company Distilling and being rebranded under the new name. With Company as the umbrella, more products will follow to please a wide range of existing customers and newcomers. “We’ll focus on creating a range of quality spirits that further explore wood finishes to be enjoyed at our facilities or purchased and later served at gatherings in your home,” says Jeff. “We believe we can create unique products that bring people together and satisfy everyone from the novice to the true whiskey connoisseur.” Learn more at CompanyDistilling.com

Talking Business with the Owners of SMASH Knoxville ARTICLE BY MITAL D. PATEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN POYNTER

I love sitting down with my business clients and listening to their vision. I often tell them to continue to dream big and let us do what is necessary to legally form and plan even bigger. Recently, I had the pleasure of turning the tables and being the one asking for advice for this interview with Paul and Ashley Moody, the husband-and-wife team behind SMASH Knoxville and their partner, Scott Stallings. Mital: What advice would you give starting entrepreneurs? Paul: Before starting your business, ask yourself if you love the journey. Not just the destination, but what it takes to get there. There are going to be amazing days that will far outshine the bad days but you have to love the process to get through the rough times. Once you have done that, be sure to find a work/life balance, however that looks to you. Lastly, numbers do not lie. Don’t be romantic about a product, service or process if it is not working. Mital: What steps did you take to create and protect your brand? Ashley: I had a pretty good idea of our brand identity, but the most important thing we did was hire an amazing branding consultant/ graphic designer to help bring our vision to life. Her ability to combine my thoughts, our flavors, and the general vibes of the food with her exceptional skill, and create something out of thin air was pivotal for the branding process. However, truly creating a brand is an ongoing process

that is always evolving and expanding so don’t put limits on yourself or get too comfortable. Protecting our brand is something we knew we couldn’t do alone. Mital, you and your team have saved us so many headaches and we are so glad you are walking us through this. A legal team like yours is the only answer. Mital: How are you handling the fast growth of your business, especially as you are breaking into numerous markets nationwide? Paul: It all has to do with preparation. What feels fast to one person, might not feel as fast to another. We are simply navigating a growth rate that is being set in front of us as well as choosing when to pull back and say no when it doesn’t feel right. Thankfully, we have surrounded ourselves with people who have gone before us — in business and in the communities, we are expanding into. Ironically, Scott Stallings was heading out of town shortly after our meeting. I asked him, with all of his time commitments as a professional golfer and travel schedule, what did he look for when partnering/investing with this concept. Scott said that for him “it is about the people” and that “good businesses don’t work without good people.” He shared that, “Paul and Ashley are awesome!” and that he is “happy to be a part of what they are doing.” TriAmicus Law, PLLC 217 S Peters Rd. Explore Knoxville Through Historic Driving Tours ARTICLE BY JACK NEELY AND PAUL JAMES

The mission of the Knoxville History Project (KHP) is to research, preserve, and promote the history and culture of Knoxville, Tennessee. Through accurate research and engaging programs, KHP tells the city’s stories, focusing on those that have not been previously told, and those that connect the city to the world. KHP’s stories, programs, and publications educate and help residents and visitors understand the city’s past and its complicated but dynamic heritage, and also to inspire an appreciation for the city’s culture. Learning about a city’s history makes one more aware of its geography and its buildings, leading to a better sense of place. KHP’s downloadable driving tours of Near-West, North, East, and South Knoxville provide opportunities for residents to discover and appreciate the many historical landmarks found throughout Knoxville that can be seen easily from a vehicle, or explored on foot. The Near-West Knoxville Driving Tour starts on Kingston Pike at the foot of the Strip on Cumberland Avenue, at one of the city’s oldest parks, Tyson Park, and proceeds west along the pike. The route then meanders through Sequoyah Hills to Lyons View Pike, and loops around to Bearden via Northshore Drive before heading back eastward along Kingston Pike to Western Plaza. The last, optional section, also along Kingston Pike, contains many interesting places of worship and buildings of fine architecture. The total driving distance is approximately 8.5 miles from Tyson Park to Western Plaza. Download driving tours at KnoxvilleHistoryProject. org/Historic-Knoxville-Driving-Tours

Indian Mound On Cherokee Boulevard, in the heart of Sequoyah Hills, look for the prehistoric Indian Mound in the median near the intersection of Kenesaw Avenue. It was built centuries ago by a pre-Cherokee Native-American culture. One of two notable Indian mounds in Knoxville, it’s more eroded than the one on UT campus off Neyland Drive. Nearby, both on and off the boulevard you can find several unusual concrete features, remnants of the planned town-center community, Talahi, dating back to the 1920s. The panther fountain adjacent to Papoose Park combines crypto-Egyptian and art-deco themes. The delightful circular pond, on the boulevard itself, featuring frog fountain heads is also worth stopping to see. (Photo by Shawn Poynter)

Lakeshore Park

Learning about a city’s history makes one more aware of its geography and its buildings, leading to a better sense of place.

With 207 riverfront acres, several athletic fields, and miles of walking trails, Lakeshore Park is one of Knoxville’s most popular public parks. It covers the old campus of Eastern State Mental Hospital, known as Lakeshore in its later years, but in its early days the property served as Lyons View Asylum. Little of the old hospital remains except for a portion of the 1886 administration building, the castellated brick building on the hilltop, and a postwar modernist chapel down the hill, pictured here, which serves as a charming events venue, complete with a delightful stained-glass window. Wallace Chapel

Wallace Chapel, on Homberg Drive off Kingston Pike in the heart of Bearden, is an African Methodist Episcopal church built in 1930, on the former spot of a dance hall destroyed by fire. Still active, the church is the most obvious relic of the Brickyard, a Black community where dozens of workers for an early 20th-century brick factory lived. The community outlasted the factory for decades; the last residents left in the 1980s. (Photo by KHP)

Everly Brothers Park Everly Brothers Park, at Kingston Pike and Forest Park Boulevard, honors Phil and Don Everly who lived in Knoxville for less than three years, but it was here that they discovered rock ’n’ roll. The duo began performing (mostly on WROL radio), and made connections with Chet Atkins, who helped them combine their harmonies with driving guitar work to become some of the most influential rock pioneers of the 1950s. The park, which opened 2019, is still a work-in-progress, and features quotes in marble from famous icons who found inspiration in the Everly Brothers’ classic songs, including Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Elton John, and Graham Nash. Get Away to the Live Music Capital of the World and Discover All That Makes Austin an Unforgettable Domestic Travel Gem

R OA D T R IP | TR AVEL

“I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!

Photography Nathan Fluellen

This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public.

Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu.
