Carol Burnett once said, “When you have a dream, you've got to grab it and never let go." With that, we bring you two amazing stories from three local women this month. Each of them has worked to create the life she wanted and now endeavor to make our lives better. Lita Belcher is an interior designer who still starts her ideas with pen and paper. She is both a creative and logical thinker, so her designs, whether large or small, have a desirable aesthetic as well as a purpose. Read more about her in “It’s All in the Details.” When we heard about the Iron + Wood retreat, we knew we wanted to talk to its creators and hosts, Samantha Lane of Origami Day and Confidence Coach Regina Bonds. Friends, if you need help realizing your dreams, carving out a new path, or managing your overwhelming schedule, look no further than these two sharp, inspiring women. Read more about the Iron + Wood retreat and take in their nuggets of wisdom. Also in this issue is a delightful Mother’s Day gift guide curated by Jessica Roberts of Beam + Basket, financial advice from Hannah Maudlin of PYA Waltman, and a Q&A on Mental Health with specialist Deepali Brahmbhatt and Mital Patel of TriAmicus Law. As always, Jack Neely and Paul James from the Knoxville History Project have shared their Shoebox Collection of photos submitted by locals. If you are celebrating Mother’s Day this month, we celebrate with you! If it’s a tough time of year for you, we empathize. No matter what, we are grateful for your readership and strive to bring you inspirational stories, good advice, and beautiful photos for all of you to enjoy. All the best,

My mom made me go to summer camp growing up. Multiple times. Completely against my will. One of my more marked memories about summer camp is a weeklong mission trip to Alabama the summer before eighth grade. We had just started attending a new church, and my introverted soul was overwhelmed anytime I walked in the doors of the youth room. At the time, the thought of spending more than an hour with those people was terrifying. One Wednesday night, the youth pastor pulled me aside and said, “Hannah, your mom told me you could go to Alabama with us this summer!” The look on my face caused him to try to redact his statement by saying, “Looks like this is news to you… not the good kind.” Instant panic. Fast forward to the night before the trip, I had refused to pack and begged my parents to let me back out. But alas, my mom made me go. With tears in her eyes, she dropped me off at the church at 5 a.m. the next day.

Honestly, I could not tell you much detail about the trip. What I do remember is building incredible relationships with people that week. I gained self-confidence while serving others. I grew in my faith, and I grew up a little. I owe all of that (and so much more) to my mom. To this day, she says that was one of her more trying moments as a parent, caught between wanting me to be happy, and knowing what potential the trip had to shape me into the young woman I was becoming. I am grateful she chose the latter. As cliché as it sounds, we often think we know best. Choosing what we think will make us happy based on feeling and comfortability is usually easier, but often not best. While I do agree that instinct can help aid our decision making, sometimes the best things for us are brought to our attention by those around us. As with so many other life lessons, this truth can transcend to our finances as well. Having a trusted advisor providing an outside perspective or a nudge of accountability can call us to action that we might otherwise quietly sidestep. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let’s remember the invaluable guidance our moms, or other personal champions, have selflessly provided throughout our lives, even when it hurts. Let’s also remember that some of the greatest strides we have yet to make in our finances, relationships, career paths, or personal growth could be spurred on from those around us whom we trust. I know I speak for each member of the PYA Waltman team when I say we take pride in and derive great joy from giving sound advice that allows our clients to live the most fulfilling lives they can, even when it, at times, feels like tough love. Empire Building Located on the northeast corner of W. Church Avenue and Market Street (then known as Prince Street), and designed by Knoxville architect Albert Baumann, construction on the Empire Building began in 1901. The Knoxville Journal and Tribune reported that “the building will be of the finest modern office construction with steel and concrete floors and roof, making it absolutely fireproof,” an important distinction in the wake of the catastrophic 1897 fire on Gay Street. Replacing a residential dwelling on that corner, the new Empire building, once completed, claimed to be Knoxville’s tallest building, being nearly twice the height of the Deadrick building, its neighbor immediately to the north. The Empire Building was torn down in the 1970s. Shared by Alec Riedl.

Holston Bank Building When completed in 1912, the Holston Bank Building was the tallest building in Knoxville. In 1928, the Holston merged with Union National Bank and a year later added two additional floors. During the Great Depression, Holston Bank failed and then the Hamilton National Bank established itself in the building, as seen here on a busy Gay Street during the 1930s. By the 1940s, the building hosted the offices of the FBI and radio station WROL. At the time, they were broadcasting the early work of Tennessee Ernie Ford and Flatt and Scruggs. The building was converted in recent years into luxury condos. Shared by Alec Riedl.

Hotel Arnold

H OTE L A R N O LD

Located on the southwest corner of W. Church Avenue and Locust Street the Arnold Hotel was developed in 1928, converted from a 1923 apartment building named for the former family who owned this spot. The hotel was said to have a “palatial” feel to it with “dark marble walls (that) gleam with inlaid pearl.” Knoxville-based Sterchi Brothers were awarded the contract to furnish the hotel. The hotel was razed not long after the Tennessee Supreme Court was built adjacent to it in 1963. The Church and Henley apartments are being constructed there today. Shared by Alec Riedl.

Arnstein Building Designed by Cleverdon and Putzel of New York, Knoxville’s first steel-frame “skyscraper” was built in 1906 by Max Arnstein, a German Jewish merchant who ran what was considered the city’s finest department store, especially known for women’s fashions from Europe. The seven-story Neoclassical building was adorned with Renaissance Revival detailing. The store closed in 1928, but the couple remains fondly remembered locally. Max’s wife, Lalla, became one of Knoxville’s first female elected officials, serving as a member of Knox County Court from 1924 until 1930 when the couple moved to New York. Since then, the building has hosted offices of Tennessee Valley Authority and later 13-30 Corp., when it owned Esquire Magazine. It now contains residences, offices, and retail. Shared by Alec Riedl.

We are always on the lookout for old images for our Knoxville Shoebox digital collection. It’s All in the Details Turn-Key Design that’s Positive, Practical, and Personal ARTICLE BY JENNIE TREADWAY-MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN POYNTER

First and foremost, Lita Belcher is an artist. Born with the natural ability to draw, the New York native honed her skills with a Fine Arts education, first at the Art Institute in Phoenix and then in Atlanta. It was in college where she was exposed to commercial art, which dispelled her previous belief that she could only grow up to be an artist or art teacher. Fortunately, college presented an avenue that allowed her work to become three dimensional. She took some architectural classes, and that was that. Lita had found her calling.

“My dad is the middle child of 11, so he has five brothers who all work in construction in various ways. I’ve always been exposed to that,” she says. “I have a logical side to me, so I wanted to draw something useful.” She also wanted to draw by hand, which isn’t a skill that’s altogether common anymore. In fact, Lita was one of the only students at her school who could hand-draft, and that landed her a job at Jackie Naylor Interiors in 2005. She and her husband eventually settled in Knoxville, and Lita accepted a position at Laws CONTINUED >

Interiors with Paul Law as her mentor. After having her son, Lita went to work for Blackberry Farm, where her skills and professional relationships blossomed. By 2018, as a mom of two, Lita went out on her own to build a career that kept her work-life balance in check. “I use both sides of my brain,” she says. “I have a logical, practical side, but I also have a creative, think-outsidethe-box side. What I do is subjective, but there is a correct and safe way to do design, along with an economical and ergonomic way to design. I think this is a rare thing.” Lita has her own aesthetic – what she calls “modern rustic” – but she isn’t one to push her personal style on anyone. She helps clients to define their own style and then suggests materials and fabrics that fit the space, their budget, and what the architecture calls for. At every turn, Lita is pairing needs and wants with new ideas and custom design. With every client, she’s putting both sides of her brain to work. “It’s more responsible to design a space that’s helpful to someone, that impacts their life in a positive way, whether it’s comfort or practicality. Is that handle comfortable to grab? Does the back of that chair need to be lower or higher? I try to customize it for customers,” says Lita. “I also design for customers who want to age in place, so we think ahead to using tiles that have more grip or think of where we need to put grab bars in the future. But the house also needs to work for the next generation, so we can be universal and custom at the same time.” Lita is a pro at designing primary homes, but give her a secondary home and she’s on fire. Bunk rooms? Yes, please.

“We come up with something together that makes us both happy and proud. I do that in a turn-key way. I can work with architects and help draw up house plans, and then I’ll have fire in your fireplace and wine in your glass when you get home.” Whatever the challenge, Lita is up for it. “I’ve done it for 17 years, so I’ve seen and experienced a lot. I never copy a picture someone gives me. We come up with something together that makes us both happy and proud,” says Lita. “I do that in a turn-key way. I can work with architects and help draw up house plans, and then I’ll have fire in your fireplace and wine in your glass when you get home.” Connect with Lita on Facebook and Instagram @LitaBelcherInteriorDesign

Samantha Lane and Regina Bonds SIX BITS OF ADVICE FROM THE CREATORS OF IRON + WOOD ARTICLE BY JENNIE TREADWAY-MILLER

Several years ago, Samantha Lane, creator of Origami Day, and Confidence Coach Regina Bonds noticed that they were circling the same entrepreneurial events and took it as a sign that they were supposed to meet. Their energy and interests aligned so closely that they decided to work together to develop something that both maximized their own potential and invested in the community. In short, they took the “iron sharpens iron” concept and ran with it. “Sam is a more principle-based, analytical person, and I am more spiritually-led, the psychology of things,” says Regina. “We’re both driven and focused on how to live our best lives,” adds Samantha. “We wanted to sharpen ourselves and each other and gather a group of women who were ready for that next level.” The first Iron + Wood retreat was held in August 2021 at the Little Arrow Outdoor Resort in Townsend. Fifteen local women joined Samantha and Regina for a weekend of confidence building and time management, along with good food, yoga, and campfire conversation. “My favorite part was that we provided a safe space to sharpen each other. It was interaction-heavy, not teaching-heavy. We were able to speak into each other’s lives and allow everyone to come together,” says Regina. “There were a lot of aha! moments when we were off the program,” adds Samantha. “We knew every problem wouldn’t be solved from the retreat, but we knew working together was good for us.”

For Samantha, a self-proclaimed student of time management, problem-solving is part of her professional life. After undergoing a significant surgery in 2014 – the kind of event that makes you realize that time is precious – she went on to build a company dedicated to maximizing time and energy. Origami Day helps individuals, professionals, and organizations increase productivity and decrease burnout through training, coaching, and working on actionable tasks. She even designed a collection of day planners and productivity pads suitable for anyone who wants to get more organized. Specifically, Samantha has a strong passion to help women find the proper work-life balance so they can live more enjoyable and productive lives. Likewise, Regina wants women to become unstoppable, to be bold enough to create the lives they want. So, as a nationally-recognized Confidence Coach and speaker, Regina has worked with women around the world to “recognize their value, find their voice, and clarify their path” through a program she developed. Her work week is built around one-on-one sessions, phone calls with local and global clients, and attending teaching and speaking events. Regina says that people call her a bulldozer, which is a compliment to her ambition and desire to help women better their own lives. For Samantha and Regina, joining forces to develop a modern business retreat for women was a no-brainer. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2

The next Iron + Wood event is scheduled for January 2023. Samantha Lane’s Three Steps for Shifting from Overwhelmed to Organized 1. Prioritize. Patrick Lencioni said, “When everything is important, nothing is important,” so it all starts with prioritizing. One of my favorite tools for this is the Eisenhower Urgency Matrix which helps evaluate demands on your time based on urgency and importance. However, simply taking a moment to jot down a SMART goal for the week or your top three priorities for the day will help clarify what really needs your time. 2. Plan. We remember more when we write it down and accomplish more when we cross it off. For this reason, and many more, I encourage people to make a written plan once each week. Doing this each Friday will reduce the dreaded ‘Sunday scaries’ and ensure the workweek starts strong. There is a lot that can go into strategic planning, but simply making a written plan each Friday for the following week will quickly shift your life from reactive to proactive. 3. Protect your Plan. Once you have identified what is important and committed time to it, your final step will be following through with your plan. We have all learned that plans change (#2020), but healthy boundaries are a critical part of balance. Respecting and protecting our plans by communicating expectations and saying no, is the most important part of time management. After all, since time is finite, saying ‘yes’ to something is actually saying ‘no’ to something else. Follow Samantha on Instagram and YouTube @MyOrigamiDay. Learn more at OrigamiDay.com. Regina Bonds’ 3 C Formula 1. Clarity. You need to know what you want. What cannot be explained can never be obtained. There is something about having a vision of what you want that makes life make a little more sense. Clarity gives us a sense of direction and understanding. Write down what you want, and even if you don’t know it all, write what you think you want and the feeling you want to feel. 2. Courage. This is the ability to go after what you want even when you are scared. Courage is for the person who knows that greatness comes as a result of having the courage to take a risk and bet on you. Winston Churchill said it best: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” To go to the next level and build unstoppable confidence, you have to get out there in the game called life and dream, explore, and discover. Do it afraid! That alone builds confidence. 3. Commitment. When it comes to building self confidence, you have to stay committed to yourself and trust the process. Make a vow to love yourself first. Be intentional about studying the subject of YOU! You are your greatest investment. From Iron + Wood 2021 Photo by Rachel Woods/ Smoke Signal Media

Mental Health Concerns While Experiencing Legal Problems ARTICLE BY MITAL D. PATEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWN POYNTER

May is Mental Health Awareness month. Mental health has become increasingly important in recent years and deserves recognition for its role in overall well-being. The last couple of years have tested our strength and resiliency, but it has also caused many to struggle with their mental health. In order to learn more, we reached out to Deepali (Dee) Brahmbhatt, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, who is a dual board certified Nurse Practitioner in both Psychiatric Mental Health and Family Practice. With nearly 20 years of combined healthcare experience as a social worker, critical care and gero-psych registered nurse, and now as an outpatient mental health nurse practitioner, we sat down to talk about mental health. Mital: Can you help us understand what we all can do to de-stigmatize mental health and how we can encourage others to seek help? Deepali: These past 2-3 years have been a whirlwind of uncertainty mixed with overwhelming amounts of information that have affected people in a way that was unpredictable and unprecedented. The stigma of mental health has always been this dark and looming cloud rooted in stereotypes and even discrimination for many years. However, the optimist in me feels that it is being lifted slowly but surely. I recognize that it is not easy for anyone to say, “I need help with my mental health” without worrying about how that statement will be received in the minds of others. However, it is those people that are equipped with a vital tool that allows them to do just that; and that is self-advocacy. Selfadvocacy simplified is: knowing yourself and believing in yourself, knowing your needs and knowing how to meet your needs by vocalizing them and being assertive. So you might ask, ‘How can one become an advocate for their own mental health?’ The answer is in education and communication. The more one knows about what mental health is and isn’t or what it looks like and doesn’t look like, then the more likely one will be able to combat those same stigmas and stereotypes that prevent people from utilizing resources that promote mental well-being. Mental health is not a novel concept but addressing its significance and the crucial role it plays in daily life is certainly being embraced more and more, in my experience, due to more accessible information and education. The more we talk about it the more we can ‘normalize’ it.

Mital: For those experiencing mental health problems, can legal problems also affect those numbers? Deepali: Life is dynamic right? Meaning it is always changing in some way. The inability to adapt to change can be a source of stress. Chronic stress, however, can cause mental health problems. Legal problems are typically not something short lived and thus a source of chronic stress. Legal problems are one of many risk factors in developing mental illnesses like major depression, PTSD, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, substance use disorders, etc. Legal issues such as divorce, domestic violence, incarceration, financial trouble or bankruptcy can be contributing factors of mental illness due to their stressful nature especially when compounded with the stressors of daily life. According to NAMI (2022): • 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year • 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year • 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24 • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34 Legal situations are often accompanied with heightened emotions, due to the unforeseen and often uncharted territory of legal trouble. This can lead to maladaptive coping mechanisms and an increase in mental illnesses. Not everyone is readily equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate these situations and lacking the necessary resources and tools to reconcile them can have negative outcomes. I would recommend to anyone who feels that they may be experiencing a mental health issue, to seek psychiatric help or speak with their primary care provider.
