A Time to Grow KATHERINE BIRKBECK WAS A STUDENT AT BERRY COLLEGE WHEN SHE TOOK A FEW PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES AND CAUGHT THE SHUTTERBUG. “I loved being in the darkroom. It felt so artsy and cool. I knew I’d have a darkroom in my house one day, and then it all went digital, which is way easier,” she says, laughing. “I got a camera for Christmas, so I’d walk around campus taking pictures. I didn’t think it would be a career, that it would just be a hobby, but I learned quickly that it’s an expensive hobby.”

“It just made sense for our family and our town. We want to help the community. We wanted to bring life to the street that the building is on. I grew up in Clinton, so the town is special to me. My best friend and I, when we were in middle school, would walk to Hoskins to get a milkshake and then walk to church,” she says. “I envision having that for my kids.”

The building at 303 Market St. has been a handful of restaurants in its previous life, so it needed a full reboot. Since Clinton is known for its antique stores, Katherine wanted to keep the building’s aesthetic in line with the town’s character. She hired Henson Construction, and together they drew up plans for new floors, fewer walls and antique fixtures that aligned with the exposed brick walls. The outside color palette was approved by the historic commission, and the second-floor space was fully renovated to be an apartment. The century-old building was brought up to code and officially opened for business in February. “‘Spindle Tree’ comes from a song by Ryan Long, a local musician. I listened to that song a lot in high school. It has a lot of meaning for me and my foundation here in Clinton. It accommodates 100 patrons comfortably with standard table and chairs, areas of soft seating and a fireplace, as well as a window bar that runs the length of the space. There’s even a corner spot for live music, suitable for a singer/songwriter or a small group. The goal was to create a professional space with warmth and a coffee house that worked for professionals, passersby and the eventual residents of the 130 high-end condos currently underway.

“The main thing in Maryville we get repeatedly is that it’s cozy and like your living room. Regas is a little more modern in style but not all chrome and glass,” John says. “Because we’re a coffee company, and the coffee is so important to us, the photography we’ve decorated with are from coffee-growing regions. We have great coffee, and it’s a beautiful space.”

A New Old House RENOVATION MAKES A HAPPY HOME

STEVE AND JOY CHAMBERLIN BOUGHT THEIR WEST HILLS SPLIT-LEVEL HOME THE SUMMER OF 1990. With their then3- and 5-year-olds and one on the way, the Chamberlins had plenty of room to spare and the kind of backyard that begs for busy children. The large, looming magnolia tree was well-suited for climbers.

Fast forward 25 years and the Chamberlins found themselves at a crossroads. In that time there had been marriages and grandbabies, and despite being in the midst of raising their fourth child, they considered moving. The house was mostly quiet and brutally outdated.

It was time to make a change, but how?

“A realtor came over and told us what we’d get for it. If we’d moved, it still would’ve been a financial decision. We either needed to fix it to enjoy it or fix it to sell it,” Joy says. “But I grew up near here. I went to high school with my neighbor. We both went to UT. I like going places and running into people I know.

This is our neighborhood.”

So that was that. The Chamberlins were staying put, but that meant charting a course for renovation, which, as everyone knows, is something that can put a marriage, family and budget through the wringer. They hired interior designer Brooke Phillips and started the conversation about what this process might look like.

“There’s something about an older, established home,” Brooke says. “I’m in new and old houses all the time, and there’s something about the lower ceilings that feels intimate and cozy.”

They didn’t move ceilings, but the Chamberlins did knock down a pantry and accompanying wall to open up the kitchen to the dining area and living room. They gutted all three bathrooms, replaced flooring and stair railings, built cabinetry and an island, and overhauled the foyer. The overhaul started in late-2016, and the finishing touches were finalized this January.

The Chamberlins' home had a complete facelift on the inside, and while each space reflects the family affectionately and authentically, the best part of the renovation is that they didn’t have to say goodbye to a home that holds so many memories.

Before the renovation, the kitchen was dark and cramped. Knocking out the pantry meant less storage, but it also meant creating a semi-open floor plan.

“I want my clients to use their things to tell their story. Joy wanted all new art, but I asked her to remember what was important to her,” Brooke says. “Spaces are about relationships. She brought out this quilt, and I work with a framer, so we had this done.”
