Health and wellness are pursuits we strive for daily, but as the year begins, they seem to take center stage in our minds. New diets, exercise routines, reading regimens, etc.—we set ambitious goals for the next 12 months. Reflecting on my track record with New Year’s resolutions, I ask myself: Why do I fail so often? Are my goals unattainable? Do they lack significance? Or, like many, do I opt for the path of least resistance? Likely, it’s a mix of all these.

This year, I’ve resolved that things will be different. This will be the year everything changes. But then, wasn’t that my mantra last year? To truly succeed, I need a new system—one built on accountability.

I firmly believe we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with. This realization prompts me to examine those around me. Even more unsettling is the question: If someone counts me among their five, what example am I setting? This thought weighs heavily, especially when I consider my children. If my boys mirror the habits and values of the five closest people in their lives, and I top their list, what will they learn? For me, this is a profound and sobering question that builds in more accountability than anything else.

When people told me having kids would change me, I didn’t expect it to manifest in this way. Being a better example for them has become the strongest driver of change in my life. It turns out I am willing to do far more for those I love than I would ever do for myself.

When I think about what I want for my sons, it simplifies things and brings life into perspective quickly. It’s not fame or fortune I wish for them, but a foundation of beliefs, morals, and habits that foster success. If I want them to love God, care for others, and strive to do right no matter the challenges, then I must embody those values myself. These three things may be a gross oversimplification of life, but maybe not.

Many profess their love by claiming they would die for someone. Perhaps the truest expression of love is choosing to live for them instead. I am making this my New Year’s resolution and I hope it inspires others to focus on what is truly important this year…… others.

that gives you all the glory of the Texas countryside but with modern-day amenities, the Wahwahtaysee Resort will be a dream come true.

Owned and operated by the Dillard family—father Robert and sons Sammy and Donny—Wahwahtaysee opened in April 2018 with just three safari tents; today there are seven tents and three converted container cabins available for rent. What once

was open land is now a haven for anyone who wants to escape the daily grind but not give up a home-like space. “It’s very comforting to get that outdoor camping experience but at the same time have all these wonderful luxury amenities that you’ll have back in the cities as well,” says Donny.

The Dillards have built the resort from the ground up. Each unit is like a glamorous little house: everything is on grid power, they have central air and heating, hardwood floors, designer tile, soaking tubs, indoor showers, full kitchens, quality mattresses and linens, sturdy decks, and more. “These are designed to a tee. We buy the actual framing in the canvas, build a deck, go inside, and frame the tent with two-by-fours, real windows, and real doors. The tents are about 750 square feet, and the containers are about 320 square feet, and they’re what you would expect from a high-quality resort,” says Sammy.

A high-quality resort it is, indeed. Along with the luxe accommodations, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the

beautiful property all year. The heated pool and hot tub opened last summer, and the Dillards have developed almost a dozen beaches along the San Marcos River, all ideally placed to ensure privacy for guests.

It’s a 10-minute walk to the riverfront or a three-minute ride in one of the golf carts that come with your tent or cabin rental. Since the river hovers around 72 degrees year-round, swimming can be extended long past hot summer months.

There’s a volleyball court, a Bocce ball court, pickleball, yoga classes, and casting lessons. You can book fly fishing excursions, river tubing adventures, and kayaking trips. You can hike, bike, or drive on the trails, nearly a mile of which slopes down through a 105-yearold pecan grove to follow the river. There’s even a skeet shooting spot down the road from the resort.

Sometimes live music will be scheduled, and there are fire pits for the all-important camping treat—s’mores.

While there isn’t a full restaurant on-site, the various food options are tempting. The Yeti dinner is popular:

you’ll pick from a list of a main dish, a side, an appetizer, a dessert, and a sauce. “For example, bruschetta, tenderloin steak with horseradish sauce, veggies, and a skillet cookie. We’ll prep that and guests cook it themselves. We also have a private chef we bring on-site for special occasions. They’ll do a full questionnaire with the guests and curate a meal for them,” says Sammy.

A newer option is breakfast and lunch, served poolside or delivered to your accommodations.

Choose from things like the migas plate, the waffle plate, the breakfast taco plate, smoothies, immunity shots, and more.

What else does the resort offer? A chance to explore a bit of hill country. Lockhart is the perfect day-trip destination from Wahwahtasysee. As the barbeque capital

of Texas, you know you’ll eat well, and you can browse bookshops, music shops, and clothing boutiques in the historic city square.

Wahwahaysee caters to guests from all walks of life, but there’s a real family-friendly vibe, and the Dillards embrace that. “It’s such a fun activity to experience as a family, to bond on a camping trip. You’ll see people hanging out on the deck, using the Big Green Egg, people enjoy being out there and cooking dinner out there,” says Donnie.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2000, CrossFit, a high-intensity fitness concept developed by a former gymnast and trainer, has proven it has staying power, with an impressive number of affiliated gyms, now in the thousands nationwide. The growth demands attention, especially from fitness experts, who are weary of how easily a standard gym routine turns stale. When a

CrossFit’s once-novel concept retains participation, bordering on discipleship, with an interactive rotation of fitness challenges in a team-like environment that supports each member’s success. At CrossFit Westwood in Fort Worth’s Near Southside district, trainer Trent Volentine has seen the program in action, watching gym members wield its methods to reach their fitness goals and build lasting friendships in today’s growingly disconnected world. But what exactly is CrossFit? Is it for everybody? Trent explains his first-hand experience with it and what makes Westwood unique.

UNDERSTANDING CROSSFIT

CrossFit is a dynamic strength and conditioning program that blends various training styles, including

weightlifting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and functional movements. When members are outside, you’ll see them carrying sandbags or dragging sleds, motivated by the enthusiastic cheers of fellow CrossFitters coming from all sides. Each person is encouraged to do their best, from wherever they are in their fitness journey. Trent explains that a common misconception is that one must already be in peak physical shape to start CrossFit. “We’re here to guide you at any fitness level,” he says. Coaches are always available to tailor the workout, sharing modifications that ease or harden intensity and ensure everyone remains safe.

Injury fears often stem from individuals pushing beyond their limits, but at Westwood, careful coaching and scaling options mitigate these risks.
