Kids & Pets

There’s something truly life-changing about having kids in your life—whether they’re your own, the ones you teach, or those you’ve had the privilege to mentor.

Kids have this incredible way of shifting your perspective. They challenge you to grow in patience, compassion, and creativity. They ask questions that make you think deeper and laugh harder. They remind you that joy can be found in the smallest things—like puddles, stickers, or bedtime stories.

Being around children teaches you to slow down. You start noticing moments that used to pass by unnoticed. You become more intentional with your words and actions because you realize how much they’re watching, listening, and learning. It’s both humbling and inspiring.

And while kids require your time, energy, and heart, the return is immeasurable. They bring light to the darkest days. They celebrate life with wide eyes and full hearts. They believe in the good, even when the world feels heavy.

Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, an aunt, uncle, coach, or friend—if you’ve invested in a child, you know just how much value they add to your life. They remind us of who we were and who we still have the potential to be—curious, brave, open-hearted. In pouring into their lives, we discover parts of ourselves we may have forgotten. They teach us to love without limits, to dream without fear, and to live with wonder.

So, hold their hands, listen to their stories, cheer them on. Because in helping them become all they’re meant to be, we often become better versions of ourselves too.

Adventure, Relationship, and Biblical Truth

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN GOD’S CREATION AT CAMP EAGLE

Stretching across Central Texas, the Edwards Plateau is filled with rolling hills, deep canyons, and wide-open starry skies. Vibrant wildflowers line the trails, while crystal-clear waters carve through the rocky valleys. Nestled away in the beautiful Texas Hill Country is Camp Eagle, where individuals have the opportunity to be fully immersed in God’s creation.

Founded in 1999, Camp Eagle was a dream that came to life through a group of friends with a passion for adventure and a handful of donors with a desire to serve. Camp Eagle exists to “inspire Christ-like change through outdoor adventure, authentic relationships, and Biblical truth.” It’s an established Christian camp, complete with intentional belief statements that demonstrate its commitment to its faith in Christ and God’s Word, offering opportunities for individuals to grow in their faith and deepen their love for the Creator of the universe.

From his early days as a spirited camper to his time as a devoted camp counselor, Matt Reed’s journey has been woven into the fabric of Camp Eagle. Matt has served as Camp Eagle’s Executive

Director since 2016, but his relationship with Camp Eagle starts much earlier than that. “I first came as a camper with the very first group of kids to experience Camp Eagle in 2000,” he recalls.  I quickly returned as a counselor for three summers, and Camp Eagle has been a part of my life ever since.”

Like Matt, many of the current camp counselors started their journey at Camp Eagle as eager campers. After having such incredible life-changing experiences of their own, they decided to give back to the programs that touched their lives. “Many counselors had experiences that changed them forever. They continually tell me how much it means to be part of something that feels bigger than themselves,” Matt shares. “You get to watch these kids' lives change through our mission. It’s incredibly special.”

There is a reason why Camp Eagle’s home base is situated in such a unique and beautiful location, offering a variety of experiences for campers to immerse themselves in.  “I believe that adventure builds relationships faster than most anything else,” Matt shares. “And from that place of authentic relationship, all it

CONTINUED >

takes is a little bit of intentionality to have deeper conversations about things that matter and why we exist. Those are the experiences that change people forever.”

Camp Eagle offers a wide range of adventures — from kayaking the clear waters of the Nueces River at summer camp, to exploring 1,400 acres of scenic Texas Hill Country, to diving into a ninemonth gap year program focused on service and faith. Whatever the journey, Camp Eagle is a place to call home.

When asked what makes Camp Eagle special, Matt spoke from the heart. “It seems like God speaks louder here. To get into camp, campers drive in on a long and dusty eight-mile road. Once you drive through the water-crossing and the dust washes off of your tires, it seems like it also washes the dust off your heart. Without life's distractions, campers come ready for new experiences, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of who they are in Christ.”

At Camp Eagle, the staff aims to make every adventure one to remember, and it shows with their commitment to the campers. “We ensure that our summer staff are trained to do everything with the campers, so they can be with the campers at all times,”

Matt shares. “We don’t want them to be passed along from person to person all day. We want them to have a meaningful and consistent community while they are here.”

Full-time staff live onsite year-round, creating a strong sense of community the moment campers set foot on the grounds. “Working together to bring our mission to life is really important to all of us,” Matt says. The Book of Acts describes the early Christian community and their remarkable way of life, characterized by unity and generosity —a quality that Matt ascribes to the community at Camp Eagle. “That early Christian community was a powerful display of unity of heart and mind, and we really strive for that with our full-time staff,” Matt shares.

As for what the future holds for Camp Eagle, it continues to grow. The staff is currently in the final stages of fundraising for a new on-site campus where individuals can attend summer camp in tree houses elevated among the trees.

Camp Eagle offers a chance to find freedom in the beauty of redemption, all while being immersed in God’s beautiful creation.

Peptides

Summertime is busy time, and that often means eating on the go. Whether you’re at constant baseball games or meeting up for a regular play date, you’re probably bringing food along with you to feed your crew. And there’s no meal that’s as on-the-go friendly as the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

And don’t get me wrong — I love a PB&J. But months of eating anything can get a little old, and this summer, I started to wonder if there was a way to zhuzh up the ol’ standby.

I was actually inspired by a sandwich at one of my favorite places to eat. All the restaurant’s sandwiches feature cheese. So color me surprised when I found that they had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the menu — with the addition of sheep’s cheese. And cue more surprise when I discovered that it was absolutely delicious.

IT’S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME

CHANGE UP YOUR PB&J GAME BY DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO ENJOY THE OL’ STANDBY

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE CURRID

All summer, I was craving this sandwich, a fresh PB&J sandwich on sourdough. I decided to try my own at home with what I had on hand, which was goat cheese. And it opened up a whole new world for me.

The PB&J with goat cheese started being my standard poolside sandwich this summer, and then I started talking to other people about it, spreading the gospel of the PB&J with cheese, and they would share their PB&J innovations with me. You could toast them! Put chips on them! Add bacon! The possibilities were endless.

The PB&J is so nostalgic and, yeah, sometimes, you just want a really basic one on white bread with grape jelly and creamy Jif like you had when you were a kid. But it’s also fun to be playful about it, which is nostalgic in its own way, too — being innovative and doing something a little weird or against the rules, just like when you were a kid.

“YOU COULD TOAST THEM! PUT CHIPS ON THEM! ADD BACON! THE POSSIBILITIES WERE ENDLESS. “

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO CHANGE UP YOUR PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH:

Change up your bread: One easy way to liven up your sandwich is to use different bread. That sourdough you may have learned to make during the pandemic is a perfect bread to use, or you could opt for milk bread, a Japanese option that is fluffier and sweeter than white bread.

Get nutty: While most toddlers would balk at crunchy peanut butter, you’re an adult! You can try new things! If you don’t have the crunchy type on hand, you can also just add peanuts between your layers of peanut butter and jelly to get that crunchy fix.

Toast it: One of my favorite ways to make an “elevated” PB&J is to simply toast it. It’s really similar to grilled cheese — make your PB&J, and then spread some butter on the outside on both sides. Melt some butter in a pan and add your sandwich, flipping once browned. If you want to get really fancy, sprinkle some powdered sugar on before you cut into it. I promise it will be your new late-night craving.

New spreads: You probably already have a go-to jelly for your PB&J (mine is strawberry), but change it up a bit and try raspberry or apricot. Honey is a great addition, too! I’ve also heard ginger or lemon preserves are great, or you could try swapping the peanut butter out for something different nut butter, or even something worldly like tahini, which is a ground sesame seed paste with a similar flavor to peanut butter.

Fresh fruit: This is probably the simplest way to up your PB&J game, since technically, you’ve already got fruit on your sandwich in the form of jelly. Try adding some smashed raspberries or cut strawberries to yours next time you make one!

Add some spice: Putting some spice on your PB&J can add some interest. Sambal, an Indonesian chili paste, is a good option because it lends itself to sweetness, or Sriracha is an easy one since it’s a common fridge staple. I’m also a big fan of gochujang, a mildly spicy Korean paste with a hint of sweetness. It’s best to mix your spice in with your peanut butter before spreading it — it’ll remind you of satay!

Chip in: Probably the wackier idea you’ll see here, and one a toddler would either love or abhor, but chips on sandwiches are a great way to add crunchiness and saltiness to any sandwich — especially the PB&J. Apparently, Channing Tatum loves to eat Cheetos on his PB&J, though I’ve had others tell me they love to add Doritos — both the Nacho and Cool Ranch variety — to theirs, too.

Say cheese: As I said earlier, you’ve gotta try cheese on your PB&J. I’m a fan of goat cheese, specifically the honey variety, but plain versions or those with dried fruit are great, too. The trick is to set it out for 15-20 minutes before making your sandwich to soften it a bit, so it’s easier to spread on delicate bread.

It’s bacon!: Bacon lends itself well to peanut butter because it’s also both sweet and salty. If you’re opposed to adding straight-up strips of bacon to your sandwich, a bacon jam, which you can buy or make at home, is a good stepping stone to getting out of your comfort zone.

FROM FOSTER FAILS TO FOREVER HOMES

MACKA PHOTOGRAPHY

Camille Diemer has spent most of her life surrounded by animals and learned early on that love often comes with fur and a heartbeat. Originally a Los Angeles native, her path into animal advocacy began in childhood and only deepened with time, thanks in part to the influence of her family and the meaningful experiences she had along the way.

“Growing up, we had every animal you could imagine – cats, dogs, guinea pigs, even mice! Although, my mom drew the line at reptiles,” she laughs. When Camille moved to Texas to pursue her education, she lived beside her aunt, who shared her passion for animals and inspired her to get involved in the animal rescue community. “My aunt brought home dogs and would tell her husband they were just fosters, but really, she adopted them all. Once he fell in love with them, she would ‘break the news.’ At that point, he loved them all so much he didn’t really mind,” she shares.

Watching her aunt in action inspired Camille to get involved in the local rescue community herself. She began volunteering with Saving Hope Animal Rescue in Fort Worth, whose mission is to “rescue, rehabilitate, and find loving homes for abandoned, neglected, and abused domestic animals in Dallas Fort Worth, and surrounding areas.”

When Camille first started volunteering with Saving Hope Animal Rescue, she brought dogs home for short-term stays, giving them a break from the shelter environment. “With most of my fosters, one night turned into a few nights because I would just

fall in love with them,” she admits. Over time, her responsibilities grew to include vet visits, meet-and-greets with potential adopters, and transport support. “Every person at this organization is so kind. It warms my heart to know the people running this rescue are so passionate about what they do. They’re really making a difference in the community, and I feel so honored to be involved.”

When asked about some of the benefits of fostering, Camille shares, “The dogs who are in foster care are exposed to actual family dynamics so potential adopters can see if they are a good fit. Because they spend time in someone’s home, we can see if they are good with other dogs, how they interact with children, and if they prefer to be the only animal in the home. Taking them out of the shelter environment and into a home benefits both the animals and the potential adopters.”

That firsthand involvement has led Camille to adopt three dogs — two of them being her ‘foster fails.’

Zoey, a small and spunky Yorkie, was supposed to be a foster for Camille to take care of, but when her aunt introduced the two, she knew she wouldn’t be able to part with her. Her aunt surprised her with the news that Zoey was her first official adoptee. “My aunt knew I had always wanted a smaller dog after so many big ones, and Zoey was the perfect fit.”

Next was Louie, a Spaniel Beagle mix.“Louie was technically my first foster fail. Saving Hope Animal Rescue had sent me on a pickup, and he immediately captured my heart. When I left for college, my aunt worked on finding him a new home, but we couldn’t find a good fit for him. When I came home from college, I knew I couldn’t part with him, and he’s been with me ever since,” she shares.

And last but not least was Dory, a Great Pyrenees mix. Camille picked her up after an owner surrendered her at just six months old. “Dory is basically my spirit animal, which is why I instantly fell in love with her. She can be shy at first, but once you get to know her, her personality really shines. I relate to that so deeply, and we instantly bonded.”

Camille didn’t hesitate when asked what makes fostering so meaningful. “The best part of fostering is knowing that I am making a tangible difference in the dogs' lives. I know that I am helping a future family find their forever best friend. There’s nothing quite like it,” Camille shares.

As a recent graduate from Texas A&M with a Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering, Camille aspires to work in coastal resiliency, aiming to be part of groups that restore our beaches and coastlines. In the near future, she will be working as a site engineer at a dredging company and plans to continue supporting Saving Hope Animal Rescue.

“THE BEST PART OF FOSTERING IS KNOWING THAT I AM MAKING A TANGIBLE DIFFERENCE IN THE DOGS’ LIVES.”

SPARKING CREATIVITY in the classroom

Learning comes alive for preschoolers at Kinderplatz of Fine Arts

In 1979, Kinderplatz of Fine Arts was founded by Lu Bolen, an advocate for music education in the enhancement of child development. To meet the growing interest and need in the community, what began as a small music school with a handful of 5 to 6 students has grown into a thriving preschool educating and nurturing children from 18 months through kindergarten. Through years of growth, expansion, and the addition of traditional academic subjects like math, science, and language arts, Bolen and the school’s administration and board persevered in keeping fine arts at the center of the educational process by integrating music, art, and creative play across the curriculum.

“We believe that children learn best when they are very young, they learn best by doing, and they learn best when they are enjoying themselves,” shares Karen Bennett, who has been at the school for 32 years and now serves as the school’s Executive Director. “Young children have a unique way of viewing the world, and they require and deserve an atmosphere that will allow for their full growth and development. Kinderplatz provides children the opportunity to be adventurous and imaginative in an atmosphere of security and comfort.”

The school, which now encompasses approximately 125 students and 28 teachers, is organized into a lower school that focuses on children 18 months to 2 years old and an upper school for children 3 years old through kindergarten. In both areas, lessons and learning environments are tailored to spark creativity and engage children in the learning process perfect for each stage of development. Kinderplatz is a legacy, as many alumni students enroll their own children.

“Kinderplatz is a play-based learning environment where children grow and learn developmentally through a wonderful and creative fine arts approach with hands-on activities,” says Karen. “We have incredible staff members who work in all our classrooms and provide intentional opportunities for learning. When parents come in the school, they are always so excited to look in the rooms and see the teachers engaged with the children.”

Instruction for each subject is approached thoughtfully and in a way that keeps the children actively involved in the learning process. For example, language development is taught using literature and reinforced by repetition and games while hand-eye coordination is mastered through art activities such as painting and clay work. Dancing and folk games enhance large motor skills in a fun and engaging manner.

For math and science, lessons utilize thematic activities to expand upon a number and animal focus each week. Additionally, the science curriculum puts strong emphasis on experiments and extending the classroom into the natural world. Through the school’s Jack Savell Memorial Nature Reserve, children can safely explore nature, life cycles, and observe the many wonders of the outside world.

In the different programs, children also learn valuable life-long skills such as following directions, cultivating reading readiness, study skills, and positive attitudes and habits that will equip them for future success. Additionally, teachers work to instill core values in students such as honesty, self-confidence, personal responsibility, and having internal motivation.

“When parents come in the school, they are always so excited to look in the rooms and see the teachers engaged with the children.”

This fall, Kinderplatz continues to expand with the opening of additional classrooms. “A number of years ago, we had a discussion about the importance of brain research from birth through kindergarten,” explains Karen. “We decided to poll our parents and see what they thought about possibly opening an 18-to-23-month classroom. The class was full in no time, and we realized that it was a huge need for our community. So, we decided to open another 18-to-23-month-old class this fall. We are very excited about it.” In the future, the school may also explore expansion through adding classes for ages 12-18 months or for children older than kindergarten.

Helping children develop and thrive at Kinderplatz is the fulfillment of what Karen has wanted to do since her own childhood. “From kindergarten on, I have always wanted to work with children. I love making a difference in their lives and being able to provide them with as many opportunities as we can while they are young,” she says. “At Kinderplatz, we know the importance of brain development, and we’re thrilled to be a part of some of those most important years.”

The Kinderplatz school year runs from September through May with a variety of thematic camps offered each summer. Kinderplatz of Fine Arts is located at 2701 Riverglen Drive in Fort Worth. For more information on programs and curriculum, and to set up a tour of the school, visit  kinderplatz.org , call 817-207-0660, or email  info@kinderplatz.org .

THESE FURRY FRIENDS ADD CHEER AND JOY TO THE WORKPLACE EACH DAY

The Water Closet - Oaklie

Founded in 2008 by Caryn Evans as a boutique bathroom design firm, The Water Closet has evolved into a full-service interior design firm that provides turn-key design and construction for all types of interior spaces. Oaklie, a miniature Golden Doodle with lively personality, began her role as protector, consultant, and resident dog at The Water Closet six years ago.

Fun Facts about Oaklie

1. Oaklie loves a good pup cup and as a result thinks every drive-thru window has something just for her.

2. She really enjoys time in the pool and has been known to hop in and take a dip no matter the time of year.

3. Oaklie enjoys scrambled eggs for breakfast most mornings and can often be found supervising the cooking of those eggs.

4. When someone in her family leaves the house, Oaklie truly believes that she should always get to go for a ride as well.

5. Oaklie has an office routine that includes choosing Lori if she wants to go on longer walks, as Caryn usually only takes her for a quick trip outside, and insisting that she be part of discussions and consultations occurring around the showroom’s work island.

ECM Gems - Molly

At ECM Gems, Carly Morris designs and creates custom, one-of-a-kind fine jewelry such as necklaces, bridal sets, and elevated class rings. One of her specialties is working with heirlooms where she uses the elements of the pieces and redesigns them into something new. For the last four years, Molly, a “pocket” Great Pyrenees, has served as Carly’s assistant.

Fun Facts about Molly

1. She has a large selection of colorful bows, and she wears one to work each day. Molly’s bows range from seasonal colors and patterns to the signature colors of ECM Gems, often matching the colors of Carly’s outfits.

2. She has an adorable underbite that shows off her bottom teeth when she smiles.

3. Molly is a rescue dog from Saving Hope and was adopted by Carly when she was 6 months old.

4. She loves pizza crust and knows exactly what is in that cardboard box being delivered. On the flip side, she does not like French fries.

5. Molly has a few fun tricks to entertain friends and clients including playing dead and giving paw high-fives and hugs.

Fun Facts about Sherlock

1. He is a low rider with ears and has mopped more floors than a Roomba.

2. Sherlock can smell a good brisket from three blocks away and he once trailed a dropped hot dog on the family ranch for 20 minutes and consumed it before anyone realized what was happening.

3. He’s the current reigning Tarrant County nap champion, averaging 16 hours of sleep a day. If napping were an Olympic sport, he would have lots of gold medals.

4. His mom says he has the voice of an angel and will serenade her with endless moaning and grunting just at the thought of having to roll over.

5. Sherlock loves his job as a greeter and people often stop by just to see him.

Honey Loves Boho - Sherlock

Three years ago, Kristen Barbee launched Honey Loves Boho as an online boutique. In 2024, she and her 9-year-old Basset Hound, Sherlock, began welcoming customers at the boutique’s storefront location, where shoppers browse a curated selection of trendy and Bohemian fashion, accented with a touch of Western flair, with items available in sizes XS to 3X.

Fun Facts about Tutu
