The Home & Design Issue
While writing this letter I am listening to an album titled “Home” by Josh Garrels. As the record spins from one song to the next, I am reminded of so many of the crucial things in life that the thought of writing about anything else would be a shame.
When you hear the word “home” what is the first thing that comes to mind? The house you grew up in? A group of family members? A spe cific moment in time? If you ask 1,000 people you will likely get 1,000 different answers. That being said, I would bet every answer would elicit a swarm of memories and emotions. Some good and some bad. Everything from late-night laugh fest with family to the pass ing of loved ones.
For some, this question may remind us of loved ones that we have not spoken to in years. For a long time, this was something I could not escape when the word “home” flashed through my mind. For a period, I was estranged from some of my closest family. As the years passed, our families grew larger, but further apart. Through the grace of God and someone taking the first step, making the first call, our families have been reunited! Our home is full again!
As I write this out, the song “At the Table” is playing and tugging at my heartstrings. The song is about the prodigal son and is a great reminder that we are always welcome to go home, and that day will be celebrated! Whether you are the black sheep or the one waiting for them to return, I hope you find it within yourself to reach out to your loved one/ones and get together. I promise there is room at the table.
Thinking of loved ones who have gone on before me brings me a strange mix of emotions. I miss hearing my grandad in his excited voice “ Hey Hunter Man!”, and the smell of homemade cooking from my grandmother’s house ( and the smoke that went along with it). I can only imagine how thrilled they would be to meet my children. Though I miss them like crazy, I know I still have work to do here in my temporary home. I will see them again, but not yet. it’s my turn to create great emotions in my children at the mention of the word “home”.

CAN SOLAR PANELS LIGHTEN YOUR ENERGY BILL?
ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS
EXPERT HELP | HOME + DESIGN 22
Only in Texas is the sky deeper and bluer than any ocean and more expansive than any prairie, where clouds roll through like tumbleweeds, running off in the summer when even the hardiest Texans pray for shade.
But in those blistering months, solar panel companies see potential, and the industry has significantly grown in the Lonestar State over the past decade.
Solar panels generate energy from the sun that homeowners sell back to the power grid to receive credit on their energy bills. So, anyone with an electric bill can potentially benefit.
Eclipse Solar is a family-run solar power player from the Texas Stockyards, established by brothers Nick and Jason Pavle, three years ago.
"(We joined the industry when) there was a huge need for impeccable customer service, which is what we pride ourselves on," says Nick. "Plus, a lot of our competition isn't local. Most solar companies are California-based companies without a physical presence here."
Besides service, the team at Eclipse Solar saw a gap in the community's understanding of solar power.
"Our goal is to educate homeowners on how solar benefits them and their households, mainly showing them how it makes financial sense," Pavle continues. "Panels can save homeowners a ton of money on their electric bills. We custom build solar systems to offset each individual household consumption, so it's catered to how they specifically use energy."
Eclipse Solar uses software to calculate where to place the solar panels in the home to maximize production and efficiency.
But what if the homeowner moves, leaving a custom solar system?
Thankfully, if an individual owns their panels, it adds value to the home during appraisal, but it's not a dollar-for-dollar match.
"An example we give is a pool installation in someone's backyard," says Nick. "Homeowners can spend $100,000 on a pool, but the appraiser only gives them a $25,000 increase in value. Solar panels do not add dollar-for-dollar value, but contributory value."
CONTINUED > 23 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTFORTWORTH MARCH 2024
According to the national average, homeowners increase their values by 3-5% when they own their solar systems.
"So, if a homeowner bought a $50,000 solar system and lived in a $500,000 house, they can conservatively see a $15,000 increase in value and a 30% tax credit for the total amount," continues Nick. "So, with a $50,000 system, they get a $15,000 tax credit and a $15,000 increase in value, which is a $30,000 return on investment (60%) the day they sign the dotted line."
Nick knows in this scenario that homeowners are spending $50,000 with the power company whether or not they get the panels.
"If a homeowner has an average bill of $300, they're spending $3,600 a year," he says. "Over 20 years without inflation, that would be $72,000, plus, homeowners will never get a 30% tax credit on the $72,000 without increasing the value of their home."
In Nick's example, with a solar system, the homeowner pays off their solar system in 20 years, saves in electrical costs, increases home value, and pockets a tax credit.
The homeowner can continue to benefit from the tax credit by yearly reinvesting in solar.
"It makes more financial sense to switch to solar because they own their power instead of leasing it," says Nick.
The tax credit rolls over after five years if the homeowner doesn't receive the entire amount in the first year, and there is no cap. However, interested parties should know that if a homeowner is retired and does not pay income tax, they are ineligible for the credit.
The system only works if there are quality batteries connected to the panels.
Batteries play a crucial role in solar panel systems, storing excess energy that the panels generate during sunny days for later use.
By storing excess energy, users can draw from their battery reserves during peak demand times or power outages, enhancing energy independence from the power grid.
Eclipse Solar uses Enphase batteries, the safest and strongest on the market.
"Our company is Enphase certified to sell their batteries," explains Nick. "The batteries
will power the home in case of a power outage and store excess power for later."
The systems help homeowners achieve energy independence with their everyday usage.
"We cycle the batteries daily so the homeowners will use solar energy during the day, and at night, we use batteries," he says. "The homeowner rarely uses grid power, and their bills reflect that. We are one of the few companies that build systems this way. We promote 'off-grid systems' even though the system is always tied to the grid."
The batteries also monitor the weather and send text alerts to the homeowners to warn them about inclement weather, a feature only a few companies include.
Thankfully, as steadfastly as the energy demands rise in Texas, the sun shines, and Eclipse Solar has positioned itself next to Helios, riding the ever-evolving energy landscape in his chariot.

A TRAVELING RESTAURANT IS REDEFINING THE DINNER PARTY
Launching in 2021, Heshima is a traveling fourcourse dinner party and culinary experience brought to life by Micah Labrosse, a born and raised Fort Worthian. Labrosse fell in love with cooking at an early age, influenced by the tastes and smells of his immigrant parents’ culture.
“We grew up on a farm with goats and chickens. So, it was common for us to eat fresh produce and farm-raised meat,” says Labrosse pragmatically about the east-side family farm from his memories.
The child of a Tanzanian father, a country just South of Kenya, Labrosse’s parents introduced him to diverse cuisines from India and France, influenced by Polynesia, but also Tex Mex.
“After I got married, I loved having friends and family come over for dinner,” he says. “And one day, someone said I should open a small restaurant, and I looked into it.”
From the fated suggestion, Heshima, the Swahili word for community, respect, and honor, was born; a traveling four-course dinner party and culinary experience unlike any other.
The dinner travels to the host, which means Labrosse is cooking anywhere and everywhere, including private parties at the host’s home and occasionally for business groups at corporate venues.
“The first thing we do when someone books us is sit them down and discuss the menu,”

says Labrosse. “When you work with a catering company, they only have limited options to choose from. We go a step above that. We want you to feel a part of the experience when we build the menu.”
The menu at a Heshima dinner tells a culinary story from the host’s perspective, using their favorite foods or a recent vacation spot to influence the meal.
“If a client tells me they went to Italy last year, I’ll build something authentic that they could experience in that region of Italy,” he says. “And then I’ll try to sneak in some Texas influence.”
Labrosse also crafts drink pairings for his meals, choosing wine and cocktails that compliment the flavors on the plate.
“The whole experience is about community,” he says. “Giving the table a story and taking them on a journey. I want the host to be able to explain the menu and own the experience.”
While the staff serves each course, Labrosse approaches the table, giving the guests information about the meal and stepping in as a master of ceremonies.
“Our job is to help guide the process,” he says. “I want the host to be excited about the menu we came up with and ready to get out there. Our goal is to innovate the art of hosting.”
Since starting Heshima, Labrosse’s favorite part of the job is watching table conversations go from a slow simmer to a roaring boil as people come together in a shared experience.
He recalls a dinner where different couples from the tech industry came to the dinner as strangers but left as best friends.
“They were exchanging numbers outside and making plans for the future,” he concludes. “I think people connect to stories, and that’s what we do. We try to draw people in with a story.”
And as Heshima gains traction in Fort Worth as an exceptional group experience, their story continues. weareheshima.com

THE FORT WORTH INSTITUTION WELCOMES PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE
The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, located in the heart of the Cultural District, is an imposing yet delicate building designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Surrounded by outdoor sculptures, ponds, and grassy lawns, you know you’re entering a special place as you walk into the high-ceilinged galleries filled with light.
Founded by 25 women in 1892, Texas’ oldest museum focuses on post-1940s contemporary and modern art. “We have abstract expressionists from

New York and contemporary living artists. We continue to collect and acquire work internationally in all mediums and have been working on balancing out our collection to showcase historically underrepresented groups,” says Director of Communications Kendal Smith Lake.
Whether it’s for a special exhibition or permanent residence in the museum, the curatorial department spends hours researching, visiting galleries, working with world-famous institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art, and requesting loans from private collectors to put together a collection the curators feel is important to show. “The work displayed and collected is a product of years
of exhibition and program planning,” says assistant curator Clare Milliken.
Strolling through The Modern, your first instinct will be to head directly to the permanent collection, where you’ll find works by Francis Bacon, Dallas native David Bates, Lorna Simpson, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackson Pollack, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. The museum also showcases local talent like The Fort Worth School, a modern art movement based in Cow Town. Artwork is sometimes installed chronologically and sometimes thematically, but always with the utmost thought and care to the museum’s mission to show a preeminent selection of contemporary and modern art.

“WE WANT OUR COMMUNITY TO COME AND BE THEMSELVES AND EXPERIENCE ART. WE’RE A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN.
Your next chance to experience a fresh take on this thoughtful planning is coming soon. Inspired by the history of Surrealism in the Caribbean, Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists since 1940 is running from March 10 - July 28, 2024, and it is the first intergenerational show dedicated to Caribbean and African diasporic art presented at the museum. According to Lake, this exhibition explores how Caribbean and Black artists interpreted a modernist movement. There are over 50 works of varying medium types: painting, drawing, installations, sculpture, and video. Expect to see works from artists like Benny Andrews, Suzanne Césaire, and Toni Morrison, to name a few.
“Expanding the conversation on Surrealism in American and international art, this exhibition enriches the canon by highlighting Black and Caribbean artists’ engagements with the movement. This is one of the first shows of Caribbean artists in the region, and I am excited to share it with our audiences,” commented exhibition curator María Elena Ortiz.
The Modern is a place for people from all walks of life. There’s free admission every Friday, and the museum is open until 8 pm. The reoccurring First Friday includes happy hour, light bites from the cafe’s head chef, and a museum tour. On the first Sunday of every month, kids and adults can enjoy a drawing class, the museum’s
film series—Magnolia at the Modern— shows poignant films on the weekend, and the outdoor sculpture garden and pond are an experience on their own. In March, families will want to check out ART Break, a special series during Spring Break week. From 11 am - 3 pm, kids ages 18 and under enjoy free admission, and there are stations throughout the museum where guests can chat with a community artist and work on a gallery project that focuses on various works.
“We want our community to come and be themselves and experience art. We’re a place for people to learn. Not everyone will like everything, but we hope someone will connect with something and leave with inquisitiveness,” says Lake.
When asked what artwork people shouldn’t miss at The Modern, Lake has a few must-see works to share. For starters, Richard Sera’s Vortex, a 67-foot tall steel outside sculpture, is a gathering place for museum guests. “People sing and make music. The echo creates this audio that gets spread really far. It’s a cool participatory piece of art,” she says. Kind of Blue, by new-media and installation artist Jenny Holzer, is a blue LED light installation that creates an incredible reflection in the pond, and the sculpture titled A Ladder for Booker T. Washington, by Martin Puyear, is a community favorite, according to Lake.
Take a day to explore this important cultural institution right in your backyard. Open Tues-Sun, 10 am - 5 pm, general admission is $16, senior citizens are $12, students with ID are $10, and children ages 18 and under are free; Sunday admission is half-price, and Friday is free for all guests. 3200 Darnell St., Fort Worth, TX.

• 8 Pieces of Scrap Wood: Size accordingly to use for the robot’s head, body, arms, legs and feet
• 2 Screws
• Screwdriver
• Sandpaper
• Safety Glasses
• Wood Glue
• Junk Parts
instructions
Safety First!
Gather your materials and put on your safety glasses. Set up in a place with plenty of space and where making a mess is okay.
Step 1: Sand
Using sandpaper, sand each piece of wood until it’s smooth, paying extra attention to the scruffy areas.
Step 2: Attach
Using a screwdriver, twist one screw into each of the robot’s arms, then attach the arms to the body.
Step 3: Glue
Using wood glue or a glue gun, build your robot from the bottom up in a standing position. Allow the glue to dry.
Step 4: Decorate and Activate
Glue various pieces of junk to your robot. Think about how the junk can help give your robot personality and super skills! Ideas for junk items to use include cardboard pieces, plastic lids, egg carton pieces, corks and bottle caps. You can also use markers or paint to decorate your robot.
Step 5: Clean Up and Play
Clean up your work area and store any leftover materials. Then take your new robot friend out into the world to play!
Note: This project includes real tools and materials. Make at your own risk. Safety glasses and adult supervision are highly recommended.

MAKE A WATER XYLOPHONE
Recommended Age: All ages
directions
1. Collect household glasses. To create an octave, collect eight of the same glasses. However, feel free to experiment with different sizes of glasses if you’d like.
2. Fill each glass with water to different levels. The lower the level of the water, the higher the pitch will be. Tune the “xylophone” to scale (some patience required!) or play around with different pitches.
3. Tap the glasses lightly with a metal spoon to hear the different pitches you’ve created. Play around with creating your own tunes and songs by exploring the different pitches of each water glass.
Tip: Play some of your favorite music in the background to tap along to!

ingredients
• 1 cup flour
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 tsp sesame oil
• ½ cup hot water
• 4 scallions, sliced
• Oil for cooking
• Soy sauce for dipping
instructions
1. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well and add the sesame oil, then stir in water. Knead until a dough forms. Add more water if necessary. Wrap in plastic and let rest for 20 minutes.
2. Cut dough into four pieces. On a floured work surface, roll dough into a thin circle and sprinkle with sliced scallion. Roll dough into a long rope, then coil the rope by taking the short end and rolling it towards the opposite short end (so that it looks like a spiral). Using a rolling pin, roll coiled dough out into a disc.
3. Heat oil in a pan and pan fry scallion pancake until browned, then flip to cook the second side. Repeat with remaining pancakes and serve with soy sauce.

Handmade Soap
Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.
ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
HOW TO | ENTERTAINMENT 52
The art of soap making has come a long way since our grandmothers’ day. All the nourishing oils, beautiful colors, scents and exfoliants would have been a dream to her. Today, it is easy to custom make soap for any skin type. Adding oils such as avocado, olive, jojoba, and argon are just a few ingredients to make a rich smooth bar.
Not only do handmade soaps get super-fatted oils to add moisture, they can also include some amazing exfoliants, additives and scents. A few of my favorites are honey, aloe juice, goat’s milk, activated charcoal and clays.
If you want to get started making soap try this simple pour and mold recipe.
ingredients
• 2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap
• 1 lemon rind, zested
• 3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds
• 2 tablespoons of honey
• 15 drops of lavender essential oil
• 6 drops of lemon essential oil
• jar or bowl for melting soap base
• Silicone mold
directions
lavender honey
lemon soap
Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn. If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.

MASTER SUITE RENOVATION COMBINES CLASSIC TASTE WITH MODERN AMENITIES
““I listened to my client, so I knew exactly what storage she needed. When you decide on custom, you are able to create the scenery and make it come alive.”
While interior designer Courtney McClymond has always found inspiration in modern classical architecture, she also loves what happens underneath a project, the things people might not notice at first glance. “I love to elevate spaces to reveal good color texture and layering and to bring out the space in the most beautiful way. There is a certain alchemy to spatially designing a room and creating an aesthetic to evoke beauty from a client's underlying desire for functionality,” she says.
During a recent master suite renovation in a 1950s home, Courtney knew that while her clients’ tastes ran to classic traditional, there were

plenty of modern amenities they wanted to incorporate, like heated floors, a steam shower, convenient outlets, and an inlaid niche above the bathtub.
According to McClymond, the inspiration for the bathroom started with the wallcovering. “After showing my client a few favorite selections, she fell in love with Mary McDonald's "Chinois Palais" in lettuce green. The panel scheme features a luxurious green background with enchanting cherry blossom trees and exotic birds. I color-matched the panels with Sherwin Williams Lounge Green, and it created a simply remarkable effect against the white, porcelain

marble floors with an inlaid powder blue-marble border. I balanced the green with Benjamin Moore White Dove cabinetry and gold mirrors and sconces. The effect is simply beautiful.”
The white quartzite slabs, a surprise choice from the client, ended up being another one of her favorite bathroom design elements: “The creamy whitish-grey of the slabs fused very well against the white dove cabinetry, and the veins offered a beautiful, contrasting drama to the Lounge Green walls,” she says.
From there, the closet and master bedroom upgrades flowed perfectly with the master bath. They combined two small closets with a small guest room to create a space with modern amenities like a spring/summer and fall/winter section, deep drawers for sweaters, and standing dressers. “I listened to my client, so I knew exactly what storage she needed. When you decide on custom, you are able to create the scenery and make it come alive,” said McClymond.
Courtney had a lot of fun with this project, which she says was a group effort. “The clients leaned on me, trusted me, allowed me to use my creativity, and I leaned on all my tradespeople to achieve that outcome.”
Courtney McClymond
