WHEN THE SHOE FITS: MAGGIE’S SOLE MISSION IS HELPING KIDS 20

G IV IN G BAC K | L I FE + C ULT U RE

Lisa Nichols’ mother, Maggie, knew what it felt like only to own handme-down clothes. Growing up in poverty, receiving something brandnew did not happen often, and her family often received donations from friends and classmates. “My mom

how much joy she had working with kids. It came to me in that moment. I wanted to bring her comfort and carry on her legacy. I said, ‘Mom, I’m going to start an annual shoe drive for students in your name; your mission will never be forgotten.’ She couldn’t talk at that

“I REMEMBER HOW MUCH JOY SHE HAD WORKING WITH KIDS.” grew up very differently than I did. She lived through childhood poverty and abuse, and I grew up hearing these stories,” recalls Nichols. As a child, Lisa remembers going with her mother, who had become an educator, to buy new shoes for students who couldn’t afford a pair. When asked, Maggie would say that kids often miss school because they don’t have shoes that fit, and if they miss school, they fall behind in their studies. She never told anyone she bought the shoes; she just wanted the kids in school. She was adamant about this because getting an education broke the cycle of poverty for her. Sadly, Lisa’s mother passed away from cancer in 2020. She was at the hospital when the idea for Maggie’s Sole Mission came to her, “I was trying to tell her stories about how she had made a positive impact. I remember

point, but she smiled, and I knew she understood,” says Nichols. That summer, Lisa hit the ground running, and it was very much a grassroots effort. She spread the word with friends and family and began a social media campaign. Quite a few people responded; they raised $1100 and were able to donate new shoes to Arlington ISD kids living with homelessness. Maggie’s Sole Mission was a registered non-profit organization in Texas by the second year. When I asked if she had recruited her mother’s former co-workers to help, she said they came to her. “It’s been very moving—several have reached out saying ‘I worked with your mom, I want to help,’—which is so touching for me.” When asked how Maggie’s Sole Mission selects recipients, Lisa explained that a school counselor or

liaison works with the non-profit as they know which kids are in need. “They put together a list of genders and sizes. Then, we go to our donors and use their funds to match up the best we can with sizes and colors for specific children. The first year, we just delivered the shoes. Now it’s an event on Oct. 17th—my mom’s birthday. The kids come and try on shoes until they find a pair they like. We see that excitement, how sweet the kids are.” So, what does Maggie’s Sole Mission look like now? Nichols says volunteers have done very well connecting with different community partners. For example, in 2022, employees from Tyler Technologies collaborated with Keds and designed 160 pairs of shoes for kids in need and donated an additional $2500. H.F. Custom Solutions donated all the signage, and Brooke Macko is the non-profit’s photographer, free of charge. In addition, Academy Sports gives a 20% discount on all shoes purchased. All of it is needed. “In 2023, six different schools contacted us, and I want to say yes to everyone. That’s why, in 2024, we are

hoping to partner with corporate sponsors to level up our efforts,” says Nichols. There are plenty of opportunities for the community to get involved, too. You can donate year-round via Venmo, PayPal, or any other service. In summer 2024, they hope to set up a +1 Back to School drive, where donors can buy a pair of shoes for their kids and a pair for Maggie’s. They’ll also need more volunteers on Oct. 17th, when they head to the selected school with shoes. “We were outnumbered by the students on delivery day this year. That’s the fun and meaningful part of the mission,” says Nichols. To get more information, check out their website: maggiessolemission.org

• Grab a wooden bowl, some acrylic paint, and a brush. • Hand paint some paint on one section of the bowl. • Let the first coat dry and paint another two to three coats of paint until you’re happy with the result. • Let the paint fully dry. • I wanted my gold leaf paper to overlap the paint for a layered look, so I took a paint brush and painted some Mod Podge in an overlapping pattern. • Once the Mod Podge gets tacky, use your hand to apply the gold leaf and accompanying wax sheet. • Push the gold leaf onto the tacky glue, then remove the top layer of paper. • Use your fingers to gently push the gold leaf onto the glue a little further. • Next, use the golf leaf brush to smooth over the whole area and gently wipe away any excess gold leaf. Pay extra attention to the edges. • Next, smooth the gold leaf section as much as possible, but don’t worry about any imperfections. The organic look of the gold leaf being imperfect gives the piece character. • Next, work your way to the outer edge. • Once the gold leaf is perfected, gently brush over the leaf with some Mod Podge to seal it to the bowl. • Let it completely dry and enjoy!

“

n a m e – l i ke it c a n t e l l a t a le .

Born and raised in Mexico City, Claudia VillasanaMunoz found her first professional calling in life helping people through medicine. A few years ago, she found her second, bringing joy to others through designing and producing high quality, handcrafted, custom leather goods. “I have always liked handbags and accessories. I grew up in a loving family but with very limited economic resources,” said Villasana-Munoz. “However, the lack of resources did not stop me from admiring and desiring good, quality things. Now that I’m in my 40s, I have the tools and support I need to bring my desire of creating something beautiful to life. “My goal is to produce handbags and accessories that are high-quality, handcrafted and unique. Each piece has a history and a name – like it can tell a tale, and that makes me truly happy.” Each item’s meaningful story begins with the company name, Catrina Curia. La Catrina comes from one of the most recognizable icons of Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations held annually in honor of deceased family and friends. In Spanish, when someone is said to be catrín, it means they are well dressed and put together. Curia means organization, and VillasanaMunoz sees her company as an organization because of the coordination it takes between herself and the design and production teams to transform her ideas and dreams into exquisite products. Using the highest quality leather, each handbag is designed for an elevated sense of beauty, style, and functionality. Catrina Curia offers three main collections of handbags: Artisanal, Blended and Venture. Using colors, materials and designs which reflect Villasana-Munoz’s heritage and love of Mexican culture, the Artisanal collection includes hand-carved bags that often incorporate flowers in the design. This curation also highlights the colors and textures

of Mexican culture and can take up to eight hours to make due to the intricate tooling and painting, which is done by hand. The Venture collection provides functionality with a striking and daring twist through the use of exotic leathers like ostrich and alligator. With a more playful and youthful look, the Blended collection features bags created using a mix of different textures and fabrics. Travel bags and backpacks round out available options. “With the three collections, plus the backpacks and weekender bags, I want to offer something for everyone,” Villasana-Munoz explained. “I think there is beauty in each piece, but that does not mean everyone wants to wear the same bag, which is why I do not limit my designs to only one style of handbag.” Villasana-Munoz takes an active role in each step of the process from beginning by collaborating with the design team on each aspect of the handbag from choosing the type of leather to the placement of design features, such as patterns, zippers and pockets. Once a prototype sample is created, she carries the bag and actively uses it to ensure functionality and makes adjustments to the design as needed. When a design is sent to production, no more than 10 are made, ensuring that customers receive a unique product. Handbags can be easily customized by modifying the color, texture or by adding personal information details like a monogram or company logo. When people pick up and choose one of her handbags, Villasana-Munoz wants them to feel the awe and enjoyment she has experienced over the years when she discovered the perfect accessory. “I want people to fall in love with the products we produce because the bags are made with passion and love to bring people joy,” she shared. “I also want customers to feel special when someone compliments

C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

Fort Worth knows how to bring the party. Between the entertainment and food, there’s always something to see, taste, or hear when the lights go down in Cowtown. But the city also knows how to keep the party going by creating a culture that values and makes space for its artists. For three local musicians navigating the industry today, there’s no right way to make a name for yourself in Fort Worth as long as it’s your way.

Joseph Neville Joseph Neville’s love affair with music began on a school field trip to Bass Hall. “I saw the orchestra putting on this performance for the first time,” he says. “I remember being moved to tears and developing a fascination for whatever the heck that was and pursued music through any opportunity given to me.” Critics lovingly describe Neville’s style as “sad guitar guy music,” but he loves that. “I’m a really happy person,” he laughs. “I personally really like sad songs and think they do the best job of making people feel like they’re not alone.” Growing up in the church, Neville didn’t know if sad music had a place in the world, but he realized that a lot of healing and ministry could happen when he artistically expressed his feelings. Another sad guitar guy, John Mayer, influenced Neville’s sound and also helped motivate him as a musician. “It would be a dream to collaborate with either him or The Killers,” he says. “When I saw him play and saw that he sang and played the guitar, that inspired me to become a better guitar player.” Neville strives to connect with his audience lyrically, melodically, and instrumentally, using his guitar to express emotion. Besides playing in the school band, Neville’s first performance was in the high school talent show, where he belted out a 7-minute power ballad that was terrible by his own admission. But the rush he felt was addictive, and he loved connecting with an audience through music. “The best advice I’ve gotten in my career is that people want to be connected with more than they want to be impressed,” muses Neville. “When you can connect with someone, that is when something truly magically happens.” Four years ago, Neville wrote a song that he thinks connects him the most to his audience and is his favorite to perform called “Sometimes,” also airing on CBS 11 in the near future. Fans can catch Neville at his favorite place to perform, the Post at River East, because of its intimate setting. “I know the owner, and he is so great about honoring the musicians.” CONTINUED >

Joshua Mather Joshua Mather started his career in high school singing for heavy metal garage bands, but when his group disbanded, he realized he needed to learn an instrument to keep performing. “It’s a little awkward to stand in the corner of a coffee shop and sing without a guitar in your hands,” he laughs, and the line: “I don’t know what to do with my hands” comes to mind. So, Mather learned some chords, more than a few, and the rest is history. Today, Mather doesn’t like to pigeonhole his genre too much, saying (under duress) that he identifies with alternative/rock music, but prefers to keep things open and ambiguous, like genre-bending singer Halsey or the band Linkin Park, both inspirations for the musician. “I like heavier stuff too like Bring Me the Horizon and Architects,” says Mather. “But also, lighter things, like older 90’s music.” His career has also run the gamut, starting with hard rock, transitioning to cover song coffee house gigs, and now, Mather says he wants to be loud again, giving birth to Therma, an anagram of his last name. The project rejuvenated Mather, allowing him to write songs again and reintroduce himself to Fort Worth with all original music after the pandemic. “In my personal life, none of this is possible without my support system,” says Mather. “My family, especially my mom, and cousin.” His cousin Brendan started the first band Mather joined, paving the way for his musical confidence with constant collaboration, and his mother never discouraged his dream all throughout high school and college. “I’m really lucky to have had so many supportive people in my life” says a grateful Mather.

Zach Coffey Zach Coffey has nothing to prove after nearly a decade in playing 250 days a year as a professional musician. “Right now, I have my day job,” he says. “And then I mostly do Corporate and private events which is perfect for me. I love helping people have fun!” Today, Coffey is the head of Western Rewind Band, covering country throwback songs, and he enjoys balancing his singing career with family. “We’re playing a bunch of Cowboys games, big corporate events and festivals, so we stay busy.” Coffey grew up in the ‘90s listening to older country singers like The Eagles and Merle Haggard, and their sound influenced him. “I tried out for the Oklahoma Opry when I was 14 and made it,” he recalls. “So, that was my first experience with a band, but I also sang opera in college. I have a pretty diverse background but love what I play today.” Now, Coffey’s favorite song to perform is “Nobody Frames Bad Days,” an original piece and his most streamed song. His favorite venue is Filthy McNasty’s Saloon, where the owner, Don Cunningham, gave him a chance as a young musician and shared with him how to survive in the business. “Some of the best advice I ever got was, ‘Don’t rely on music for your full-time, sustainable income,’ because what happens is you start to make musical decisions based on finances instead of letting music be the music,” he says. “So, my advice is to work in addition to chasing music. Don’t force yourself into a corner.”

A PIECE O F H E AV E N A Spanish-colonial boutique hotel near a popular staycation spot is now accepting visitors.

If you drive West on Highway 67 and cross the Brazos River via a small, reed-plagued bridge, there’s a sprawling hotel quaintly nestled in a clearing, surrounded by Pecan trees. The plot hides in plain sight on the outskirts of Glen Rose, a popular migratory spot for Fort Worthians looking for a river-side art district with surprising ties to Elvis Presley, killer antiques without the drive to Round Top, and fossilized dinosaur tracks leading to the most substantial biscuits in Texas. Retired FWPD officer and resident Mitchell Ellis and his wife, Kimmie, were two such nomadic Fort Worthians looking

to break into the rentable getaway market during the pandemic. The couple partnered with Fort Worth manufacturing company owner John Pastusek and his wife Anna to bring an Air BnB to life in Glen Rose, and it took off. Ellis describes Pastusek as a workout buddy who is good with details, although he laughs that they are both dreamers. “It was booked for two years solid,” Ellis said with a laugh. “It just did phenomenally. So, that’s how we got started.” TCU grad Daryl Stafford, a banker and the more serious “money man” in the group,

partnered with the project next, along with his wife Andrea, after Ellis and Pastusek asked him to review their plan to expand their hospitality business into a boutique hotel in 2021, becoming La Palmilla. “By the end of the conversation he asked us, ‘Can I be in it?’” Ellis laughs again. Inside the 31 Spanish-colonial era-inspired rooms, guests will find soft-toned Turkish rugs and pillows, gold mirrors, and billowy drapes surrounding warm-wooded, four-poster beds. The kitchen tile is clean and bright, and Ellis makes a point to load the cabinets full of high-end dishes and cookware. In the living spaces, guests can fall into overstuffed couches and chairs from Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware in honey brown and tobacco hues. “We wanted everything to feel upscale,” says Ellis. “Not fake-nice.” Ellis certainly achieved the desired effect. The venue cantina, across from the Hendrick Arnold Bluff, showcases Spanish tile flooring, lively mosaic designs, imported Mexican furniture for lounging and dining, and hand-crafted Dalle de Verre stained glass by local artist Cody Stromberg that mimics the area sunsets, a well-known muse. “We really wanted this thick, dark stained glass,” says Ellis. “And a man named Cody Stromberg popped up when I researched artists near Fort Worth. So, I invited him to the property.” When Stromberg pulled up a week later, it was in a dirty pickup with dirtier overalls. “I don’t know what a stained-glass artist looks like, but this guy was not the picture I had in my mind, you know?” laughs Ellis. But he was the man for the job, uniquely qualified and invested in the project as if divinely instructed to do so. “He told us what we wanted no longer existed, but he was willing to work on something for us.” Stromberg’s efforts culminated in the chapel, Casa del Rey, or “The House of the King.” Using the same Dalle de Verre glass method as the cantina, here, Stromberg was inspired by Revelation IV in the Bible when John enters the Lord’s throne room and describes what scholars believe is the Rapture, or Jesus calling the Christians home to live in perpetuity with Him in Heaven. Stromberg’s vision of the scene starts above the chapel dais, where a glass sphere radiates red and emerald behind an iron cross.

A multi-talented Stromberg fabricated one-of-a-kind tiles to border the glass. The effect is a ring of men bent in reverence to the cross, another wink to Revelation. The panels of colorful glass continue from the dais, lining the chapel walls and filling the room with emerald and ruby light. The crowns at the bottom of the panels symbolize the world’s kings throwing their symbols of authority at God’s feet. Ellis needed to fortify the walls around the windows to support the weighty sheets, and crews carried each installment in three to four pieces. After the tiles, Stromberg put on his carpenter hat and carved the chapel pews. “Some words that kept coming up during the building process were ‘excellence,’” says Ellis. “And ‘authenticity.’ We wanted everything to feel real and not like a themed resort.” To source authentic Spanish tile, furniture, and art, Ellis phoned friend and designer Sarah Summers, who assisted him with the venue decor. Ellis and Summers took some inspiration from the resort’s namesake, La Palmilla, a small tourist town near Los Cabo, Mexico. The locale is beautiful, for sure, a dotted landscape of spikey yucca and cactus, but more importantly for Ellis, it’s a memorable vacation spot for him and Kimmie. The couple’s marriage underwent a renaissance in recent years, and Ellis explains that sharing the memories with guests shares their love story. “This is also really special,” says Ellis. He walks over to the chapel doorway and points to a small brand. “This is the very first cattle brand registered in the state of Texas. The Queen of Spain sent it with Martin DeLeon, and you can verify that on his Wikipedia page. So we are very fortunate to have this.” Memories, love, labor, collaboration, and sacrifice dot the landscape of this venue, a place so new but seemingly nostalgic; you have to experience it to understand.

At MRC Stevenson Oaks, our philosophy is that

HERE, LIFE MEANS MORE.

no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. We fight back on thieves like loneliness, helplessness and boredom. We resolve to make every day one that confirms the seven domains of well-being through identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy.

“Moving to Stevenson Oaks, or any community center, was something I never considered until my husband died. I watched this being built and I thought, that is where I want to go. M E DI TAT ION , mindfulness & how yoga HELPS IN BOTH ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MACKA PHOTOGRAPHY

When was the last time you did nothing? Sat alone with your thoughts, focusing on each moment as it’s happening—just being present. Not recently? Welcome to the club. Beginning a meditational journey is no easy feat, but research shows the practice has various life-improving benefits. Want to reduce stress in your life? Meditate. Want to increase your attention span? Meditate. Want to sleep like a baby? You guessed it, meditate. The list goes on, and with all the arrows pointing toward meditation as something we should embrace, why aren’t more people doing it?

S ELF CA R E | FI TNES S

According to experts, 95% of choices a person makes daily are made as if on autopilot. Being mindful of our actions and making a conscious choice to train our minds to create new pathways and new habits can be daunting, and while some types of meditation involve breathing techniques, focusing on a mantra or sound, or even an image, another type of meditation is mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of maintaining awareness of every moment without making judgments of those moments. Yoga has been an essential aspect of mindfulness for thousands of years. We spoke with Nikela Gates of Connective Souls to gain insight into why yoga can be a critical practice for those hoping to improve their meditation journey. According to Gates, some people can be turned off from yoga because they think they have to chant. “Yoga offers you a toolset, you make it your own. You make it whatever you need at that moment. I have practiced next to someone who had a bible scripture. That was her focus, her form of meditation,” she says. Yoga is about being present, which is also the biggest aspect of meditation.”It’s tough for people to accept who they are at that moment. Things change from day to day, moment to moment. I focus on this when I share the practice of yoga. It’s about meeting yourself where you are right now. The process of slowing down—to be in the moment. Are we in the moment? Do we need the affirmations? With yoga, the inhale, the exhales, the breathing, that’s where the practice contributes to those who want to focus on meditation, says Gates.

“Yoga offers you a toolset, you make it your own. You make it whatever you need at that moment.” She also shares what she thinks yoga can bring someone in daily life, “Breathwork. Whether you feel good or bad, are in a stressful situation, or sitting at a desk. It’s listening and taking care of your body.” People can use these tools in their daily lives. Meditation doesn’t have to take an hour or even 30 CONTINUED >

minutes; it can be as simple as focused breathing for two minutes. When asked, Gates explains, “I don’t always have an hour, so sometimes I start with two minutes. I pause, sit, breathe, and ask myself ‘how do you want to feel today?’ Yoga has taught me to pause, breathe, and tell myself that I have time.”

5 TIPS FOR MEDITATION

1. Meditation is inclusive of everyone, including you. You don’t have to feel grounded and balanced, have life figured out, and all the other seemingly great mental spaces to meditate. Start wherever you are in life. 2. Any amount of time is enough. Don’t put off meditating until you have hours to sit in silence. 60 seconds can be as effective as 60 minutes when needed. 3. You can meditate anywhere. Meditating is about going inward to focus or clear your mind. You can meditate in a noisy space— noise-canceling headphones could become your meditation tool of choice. 4. There are different forms of meditation. For example, Yoga is a form of moving meditation. Research the different types of meditation and choose the best options for your journey. 5. Be kind to yourself. As you start this new journey, your mind may wander; you may find it hard to focus. Simply bring your mind back to your focal point. Your breath is a great starting point for a focal point if needed. Express kindness, patience, and gratitude towards yourself. You are consciously creating change, and you should be proud of yourself. I’m proud of you!
