LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness As we embark on a new year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the importance of health and wellness in our lives. Amidst our daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to overlook the significance of prioritizing our well-being. However, our health is the foundation upon which we build our lives, relationships, and dreams. Let’s commit to making health and wellness a shared priority. Small, consistent efforts can lead to profound changes. Whether it’s incorporating a brisk walk into your daily routine, exploring nutritious recipes, or taking a moment each day for mindfulness, these simple steps can contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life. I encourage you to embrace a holistic approach to well-being. Physical health is essential, but let’s also nurture our mental and emotional well-being. We hope this issue inspires you to join a group of people that work out together such as the Social Running Club, make healthier choices with eating by going to Clean Juice in Clearfork or spending time with older generations that have so much to teach us! Let’s remember that each choice we make towards a healthier lifestyle is a gift to ourselves and to the community we call home. Wishing you all vibrant days ahead!

About a year and a half ago, Sarah Proud, a homeschooling mother, and wife from Canada, got into contact with a franchise broker in Fort Worth, Texas, and six months later purchased Clean Juice Clearfork, a juice and smoothie cafe with other treats for health foodies in Clearfork. “I grew up north of Toronto in Alliston,” says Proud. “My husband and I lived in the Ottawa area for twenty years. We came here looking for something different.” The Prouds liked the area and chose to move to Fort Worth because their values aligned with the city more than their own northern home. “Investing in a business is one path to getting a Visa, so we started looking at different business opportunities. Our broker introduced us to Clean Juice and it really aligned with our values as far as food and faith. We were really excited.” Clean Juice is a franchise of over 100 stores across the country, but the Prouds have the only one in Fort Worth. “Texas is behind California and Florida’s healthy eating movement,” says Proud. “But I can see it becoming a priority for people around here, and I hope that grows. The message and practices of the brand are simple: do less to get more. It’s a restaurant that lists its ingredients on the menu without anything extra, and as a homeschooling mom, Proud appreciates a brand that goes the extra mile to ensure quality. “It is important to us to eat foods that benefit our bodies,” she says
about her family’s practices at home. “And we are very intentional about the ingredients in our foods, mostly cooking from scratch.” Since its inception, Clean Juice has been a certified organic restaurant, but Proud says the brand may drop the requirement next spring. “Organic certification is becoming more restrictive in the spring,” explains Proud. “So, we may drop our organic certification, we’ll see. But because of the restrictions we’ve had to source our produce from certified vendors.” The shortened list of vendors means produce could be coming from Argentina, and Proud wouldn’t know, but dropping the certification could give her the freedom to source locally. “I would have the freedom to visit local farms and say, ‘I agree with their practices, I would eat their food, and I will bring it into my restaurant.’” But she maintains there’s still value in organic certification, chiefly keeping toxins at bay during juice cleanses. Proud says that certified organic fruits and veggies are critical when abstaining from solid foods because they ensure the body doesn’t accidentally absorb toxins during one’s pursuit of health. The cleanse club at Clean Juice knows all about detoxification, and members commit to a month, or more, of discounted juices. The cold-pressed juice is often bought by people to supplement fruits and vegetables in their diet and can be picked up in pre-packaged bottles from the shop’s front cooler. CONTINUED >

“The Avocado Toast is our most popular, and it’s delicious. Its simple ingredients include avocado, olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon, some Himalayan salt, and red pepper flakes. All the good stuff.”

“When our bodies process juice there isn’t any fiber,” explains Proud. “So, if we have toxic chemicals from pesticides the fiber isn’t there to flush it out. The lack of toxins in organic foods makes nutrients from the juice that much more available and removes any detrimental effects.” The juice is sold both singly and by the day in cleanse carriers and guests are welcome to pick up as many as they would like. “We keep some packed and ready to go in the cooler at the front, so you don’t have to be a part of the club to get those.” The shop also sells sandwiches, wraps, salads, toast, acai bowls and smoothies. “Smoothies are a fantastic way to get superfoods into your diet,” says Proud. I don’t take vitamin supplements for the most part. I eat whole foods, so if I need more of something I add turmeric, maca, camu camu, or greens to my smoothies.” Superfood additives are a great way to pack nutrition into a diet and Clean Juice has a wide variety of superfood powders, juices, and frozen cubes for customers to customize their smoothies however they like. Proud explains that the acai bowls are similar to smoothies but are more indulgent. “The acai bowls are a great treat,” she elaborates. “They are thicker and more filling than a smoothie, and my kids call it ‘smoothie ice cream.’” When Proud is on the go, she grabs a smoothie, but when she has an extra minute she opts for a bowl. “The bowls and the
smoothies don’t involve any milk products,” says Proud. “The liquids we use for the base of our products is either almond milk or coconut water.” The acai bowls consist of thick smoothie ice cream on the bottom with granola and fresh fruit on top. Customers can add goji berries or fresh coconut as a garnish. The restaurant recommends various toppings and flavor combinations, but Proud says customers often customize their food in unspecified ways. The restaurant offers four choices for toast. “The Avocado Toast is our most popular, and it’s delicious,” gushes Proud. “Its simple ingredients include avocado, olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon, some Himalayan salt, and red pepper flakes. All the good stuff.” It’s an easy hand-held breakfast, along with the shop’s breakfast wrap, that is packed with the energy Fort Worthians need. For lunch, Clean Juice serves up salads, including The Protein Bowl. “Tim Tebow’s favorite salad,” she laughs, evoking the franchise’s brand ambassador and Heisman Trophy winner. “The protein bowl has the spring mix salad as the base and eggs, walnuts, chicken, hemp hearts, and avocado.” Clean Juice is open for breakfast, lunch and an early dinner, seven days a week, and Proud says she’s encouraged by their location’s success. “I hope people see the value in taking care of their bodies,” says Proud.

GO E X PLOR ING One Fort Worth mom turns pain into purpose to help moms f ind happiness post-pandemic.
Kylette Lacy is full of surprises, not just for her children, Eli Jack, 4, and Ethan, 2, to whom she dedicates her time, but she breaks the mold of a Fort Worth Instagram mom with seemingly unrealistic standards. In fact, Lacy knows better than most the Grace moms deserve. "I struggled with pretty severe postpartum depression, and I'm very open about that," she states flatly. It's not a cold delivery, but an honest one. "My number one piece of advice for moms is to get out of the house every day." Lacy took her advice and got out of the house. This year was her fourth year planning the Christmas event at Christ Chapel Church for over 400 people, and she started a mother-centered Instagram page, full of helpful tips and kid-friendly locations. The page is completely ad-free, with Lacy conducting the field research for products and play areas with her children. "Living here has been a dream," says Lacy about Fort Worth. "We live right on the Trinity Trail, and it's so picturesque."
Her husband, David, is from Fort Worth, but Lacy admits she had to adjust to their home near the zoo, joking that she wasn't always so enthralled with the views. The family moved to Fort Worth from Dallas before the Pandemic, so Lacy found herself in sudden turmoil as a new mom in uncertain times and without a friend to turn to. She also, unknowingly, began experiencing postpartum depression. "I couldn't find a mom sharing helpful things to do," she says. "So that is how @fort.mama was born on Instagram." Lacy saw that women needed the opportunity to bond and share information about free events and, more importantly, normalize each other's experiences, something in short supply during the period of mandated social distancing. "It was a way to use the struggles I experienced," says Lacy. "And maybe, if I could help one mom who doesn't know how to leave the house or meet other moms, it would make it all worth it." Today, Lacy's Top 10 things to do (screenfree) with kids in Fort Worth are: 1. Fort Worth Zoo and Safari Splash: "I love feeding the giraffes!" says Lacy. "The play barn in the Texas area of the zoo is our favorite place because we pet the goats, there are tables to have a picnic, and we love the river otters. The Predators of Asia and Africa exhibit is incredible, and we live at the Safari Splash in the summer. It's only $4 for members and $5 for non-members after paying for admission to the zoo." 2. The Fort Worth Botanic Garden: "It's a slice of Europe in Fort Worth," gushes Lacy. "The kids love to run and are pretty much guaranteed to nap afterward. There is so much to do and explore. We always make sure to buy fish food on the way in for the Koi pond. The memberships are very affordable, and children aged 0-5 get in for free. Members enjoy special events and admission times and reciprocity with the Dallas Arboretum." 3. Playgrounds: "The Tillery and Dream parks are some of our favorites," says Lacy. "But the Christ Chapel Playground is open to the public Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and I feel like people aren't aware of that. It's a great park to visit, and our kids love it." 4. The Fort Worth Museum of History and Science: "This place is so much more than just history and science!" says Lacy. "And the Museum school is good for all ages." 5. When it rains and you have to play indoors: When you are absolutely forced to play
indoors but want to keep things unplugged, Imagination Station and Playstreet Museum are great options. "Both locations are locally owned by women," explains Lacy. "And are interactive and fun with reasonable rates for Birthday parties." 6. Trampoline park: "My favorite trampoline park is Altitude," says Lacy. "On Weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., it is toddler time, where kids can jump at a discounted rate. There’s also a designated area where only little kids can jump." 7. Zoli’s: "This spot has a great happy hour, outdoor playground, and room to run," says Lacy. "Bring a ball, dump truck, or favorite small outdoor toy to play in the mulch with. The "Dope Sopp" is their award-winning pizza, and their salads are yummy too." 8. The Stockyards: "This is a tourist favorite," says Lacy. "The small train, pony rides, lunch at Provender Hall, and dessert at Melt Ice Cream can't be missed. The cattle drive starts at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. And Hotel Drover is always a favorite for date night. David and I listen to music and grab a drink there when we can." 9. Libraries: "The Ridglea, Benbrook, and Reby Cary are our favorite libraries," says Lacy. "Each one has a great schedule of events like story time." 10. Wild Acre Restaurant and Brewery: The brew spots in Fort Worth are kid-friendly, with coloring books, outdoor spaces to run through, and outdoor games like horseshoes.

The Anti-Aging Narrative In America ARTICLE BY JILL JANES VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES & MARKETING METHODIST RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

Why are we against aging? Fifty-eight billion dollars. That’s how much the anti-aging market is estimated to be worth. From skin cream to collagen injections, it seems the whole nation is emptying their pockets to avoid the natural aging process. It’s as though there is no price too steep to avoid the perils of growing old. Meanwhile, there are countless examples of stereotyping that consistently suggest that getting old is a horrible phase of life. There seems to be a subtly invading perception that life becomes depressing and meaningless. Hollywood depicts older adults as either clueless airheads or as over-the-top grouches with nothing to do all day but complain about various ailments. The narrative that seems to be mounting in America against growing old is a dangerous one, and it is time we started talking about it.
Let’s start with the fact that the word aging has been so effectively associated with negativity by top marketing executives who are peddling eye cream that it is no longer startling to hear the prefix “anti” placed in front of the word. Think about it. You expect to see “anti” in front of words like bullying, littering, or theft, but aging? Why? Why are we against aging? Aging should be upheld as a sacred process of growing wise, gathering a lifetime of experiences, and developing the next generation for success. Imagine a culture where this process is devalued to the degree that the most qualified voices among us are invalidated. Unfortunately, it’s not that hard to imagine. The elder generation has lived through multiple wars, economic ups and downs, they’ve seen the rapid growth of technology

and innovation and yet, they are marketed as empty-headed or frail. If this narrative is not silenced, we will continue to behave as though we are a nation of know-it-alls without need of the wisdom and guidance of those who came before us. This is foolishness. So, how do we fix it?
Consider your own voice It’s time we shift the narrative in our own voice first. Stop fussing over each birthday and obsessing over each gray hair. Aging is about personal growth and development. Aren’t you glad you aren’t where you were years ago? Celebrate all that life has taught you in your years and live each day with gratitude for how you may continue to grow. Be mindful of how you speak about age and shift your speech towards honoring the process instead. The narrative in America begins to return to a place of honoring older adults when we choose to live out the process of aging with a firm grip on living, really living! A constant state of sulking over days gone by or lamenting that the energetic days of our youth are behind us only seems to solidify the idea that there is an expiration date on living a full life. Instead, commemorate the many roads you have taken to arrive at this very destination, older and wiser. This is how the narrative begins to shift, one example of graceful aging at a time. Afterall, we don’t want to get old…we want to grow old. Getting old is something that happens to you, while growing old is something that is accomplished on purpose. It’s all about growth! Take Larry Beck, for example. Beck is a resident at Stevenson Oaks, a brand-new retirement community in Fort Worth and part of the Methodist Retirement Communities’ system of non-profit, faithbased communities. Beck shared, “(As I have gotten older in age, I find myself wanting to contribute more to society, friends, and family not less. In my growing employment years my focus was on me and achieving more and more success in
business and in finances, but that drive changed over time. Now I find myself wanting to and being able to help others in ways that was not possible when I was ‘in-therace’. My creative juices have never been greater than they are now and that greatness came from life-long experiences. The beauty of being older is truly that you are wiser and more compassionate. The rewards I receive now are not in money or promotion but a in smile, a thank you, or a hug. I may not be able to do more pushups but I can do more upward pushes!”
Consider the next generation We must teach our children the art of conversation and the value of curiosity so that they can glean as much as possible from their elders. Sit them down to gather grandma’s stories before it’s too late. Let them hear how children’s clothes were made from flour sacks during the Great Depression, make sure they know what it was like to watch man walk on the moon for the first time, and ensure they capture the teachings that build values like hard work, love of country, and unshakable faith. Cherish the stories, the songs, the recipes, and teachings of the aging before these assets become extinct and our children are robbed of the opportunity to learn from them. Beck was one of the fortunate teens from Burleson High School’s civics class who was invited to attend the famous breakfast with President Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The President and his wife were greeted by an enthusiastic group who even waited in the rain to see them. “We didn’t get to approach him or get very close,” recalled Beck. Kennedy famously encouraged the crowd saying, “There are no faint hearts in Fort Worth!” as he looked across the eager, yet rainsoaked group awaiting his arrival. Beck went on to describe the moment the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce officials presented him with a ten-gallon cowboy hat. “He refused to put it on because he CONTINUED >

Oaks are pushing back on these stereotypes in a multitude of ways. Beck shared, “Fun is not restricted by age. Laughing is not limited to the young. Gaming is not only for our youth (except maybe wrestling). Learning is not just for the students. Adventures are reserved for the vacationer. We live life with others who may have different backgrounds, beliefs, and persuasions but all have a common drive to live younger. You can enjoy life better when life includes challenges, fun, friends and family…and a shade tree!” Brenda Fisher and Genny Straughn
didn’t want to mess up his neatly combed hair,” laughed Beck. Later that day, as Beck rode the bus back to Burleson with his fellow classmates, they were stunned to hear the message coming across the radio, the President had been shot. Now 60 years later, Beck recalls the events of that day and the shared grief that swept across the nation with great accuracy. Certainly, this story and thousands more are worth sharing, from those who lived through it, with the next generation.
Consider making new, old friends We must reset our own perceptions. If you have bought into the lie that seniors are dull creatures who are just waiting for their next dose of fiber, you are greatly mistaken. It might be time for you to make some new, old friends. Consider volunteering at a retirement community so that you can see first-hand that old age is nothing to fear or prevent. It is to be embraced and celebrated. You’ll meet a whole tapestry of interesting people, each unique and vibrant in their own way. Beck and his fellow residents at Stevenson

Consider the future Beck shared one last warning, “Don’t let an opportunity escape you. It’s time you took advantage of your elders because they already know what you are yet to learn!” Remember, aging is one of life’s great equalizers. If you aren’t there yet, you will be. We are all aging, just at different stages. Let’s do away with the anti-aging narrative and reset our vocabularies and our perceptions. In doing so, perhaps in the future we will become a nation that deeply values its elders, giving them the rightful place of honor within our culture.

AN EDUCATED CONSUMER IS A WISE CONSUMER Going into the new year, we want to make you aware that, due to new regulations imposed by the DOE and EPA, many changes are coming to the HVAC industry, which will affect equipment pricing and availability. Equipment costs have already increased about 50% in the last three years. We are expecting another 20 to 30% in the next 12 to 18 months. If your system was installed before 2014, please give us a call at 817 800-0340 to discuss your particular situation and determine your best option regarding your HVAC equipment. At MRC Stevenson Oaks, our philosophy is that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. We fight back on thieves like loneliness, helplessness and boredom. We resolve to make every day one that confirms the seven domains of well-being through identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy.

Jeanette and Brian Frank have shared a love of running for as long as they can remember. But, it was in 2013 that their passion for the sport became something more. While looking for a group
100+ members. They meet at the trailhead at Clearfork, part of the Trinity Trails pathway along the Trinity River, consistently on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm, where most people run four

WE DON’T USE MILE MARKERS OR WATER STOPS; WE JUST RUN TOGETHER.” of other runners to join while training for a marathon, Jeannette tried a few different clubs but couldn’t connect with anyone. “I wasn’t the first; I wasn’t the slowest or the fastest. I was in the middle of the pack. I wanted to network and chat with other runners to help me better prepare for my race,” she says. Thus, the Social Running Club of Fort Worth was born. It started with a simple post on social media—Jeannette announcing her plans to hit the trail and inviting others to join her. What began as three other runners quickly turned into ten other runners, and when the number hit 30, Frank realized she might have something. A decade after that first group run, the club has
miles out and back, and on Sundays, which focuses on distance training, completing runs of six miles and over. When asked about the members of the Social Running Club, Jeanette explains it’s a group for everyone: those starting as beginning runners to those training for marathons. “It’s a very diverse crowd. It’s all about moving our bodies. We don’t use mile markers or water stops; we just run together. That looks different for everyone—some of us are working towards a seven-minute pace, and others come out and walk the trail. We want everyone to be running their own race. It’s a positive culture, and we support each other, whatever our

fitness goals look like.” Some members bring their young kids in strollers or older kids who ride their bikes on the trail as their parents run. There’s a rotation in who shows up and when. In the winter, when it’s dark by 6:30 pm, Jeanette says people still come to run, illuminated by their light-up vests, a fun sight on the trail. When the temperatures hit the triple digits in the summer months, there’s still high attendance. When asked why a club appeals to runners, Frank says, “I think it’s the connection. It’s so fun to be with other people. It helps us stay committed to our own health and fitness goals.” As with most successful things, the Social Running Club has expanded into other networking events for members. Apart from the consistent twiceweekly runs, the club now partners with local restaurants like Magnolia Wine Bar and Funky Picnic for pop-up “Run and Brunch” events six times a year. It’s a group effort, as club members volunteer at each event and partner with local retailers. They also train as a group for 5K and 10Ks and marathons. Jeanette says they recently sent a group to the Lululemon 10K in Phoenix, and 40 members ran in last year’s local Cowtown Marathon. When asked how people who want to start their running journey should start, Frank offers this advice, “First, get connected and find a running club near you.

IT’S A POSITIVE CULTURE, AND WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER, WHATEVER OUR FITNESS GOALS LOOK LIKE.” What’s contributed to our club’s growth and success is social accountability. Connections help you stay dedicated to your own hopes and goals. Second, look at your schedule and decide on three days to get outside and move your body. I think the biggest challenge can be just showing up. Third, trust the process. Your body might hurt, but keep with it and stay consistent.” The Franks are proud of the community they’ve built over the years and love raising their three young children in the Fort Worth running community. If you want more details about the Social Running Club, check out their website at socialruns.com or follow them on Instagram: @socialrunningclub. That’s where you’ll find updates about meetups, training schedules, Run and Brunch, and more. And if you just want to get out there and join the next run? You know exactly where to find them.

So maybe you finally got around to watching The Home Edit, or perhaps you’re all in on the idea of a fresh start for a new year. Whatever it is, you’re going to de-clutter your closet. Sure, this decision might seem daunting, but with some guidance, you can successfully tackle this (probably) long-overdue task. From admitting that you’ll never wear that trendy top again to deciding where to donate gently used clothes, here are three tips to help you clear out your closet like an organizing pro. First, pull out your entire wardrobe and ask yourself a few questions about each article of clothing: “Do I love it? Do I wear it? Does it fit?.” If you love it, keep it. If you haven’t worn it in a year, and there’s no sentimental value attached to it, toss it. If it doesn’t fit, consider letting it go because who knows if you’ll ever be able to wear it again. Second, divide the items you’re ditching into two categories. Stained or stretched-out items should be recycled or thrown out. If the clothing is still in good shape, decide where to donate it. Several places in and around Fort Worth take gently used clothing; our favorites include Safe Haven, Thrift Giant, the Resale Shop at the Center for Transforming Lives, and the Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County. Third, make an organization attack plan. Buy shoe bins, storage bins, new hangers, and jewelry racks—anything that’ll help you keep your closet tidy. Make a donation bin so you can do a weekly edit. When shopping for new clothes, donate two items for every one purchased.
