Style
I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.
Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Fort Worth to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.
Here’s to being uniquely you!

“What’s the Password, Old Sport?”
A SPEAKEASY IN HELLS HALF ACRE HAS A STORY TO TELL
Thompson's Bookstore and Cocktail Bar is hiding a delicious surprise. Located in the old Vybeck building in Downtown Fort Worth, patrons can settle into velvet and antique seating once inside.
"We completely renovated the top two floors of the building," says Clinton Bohn, Director of Marketing for AngMar Retail Group, the conglomerate behind Fat Daddy’s and Mama Angie’s in Mansfield. AngMar bought Thompson's nearly two years ago and the entire building a year later. The original bookstore closed in 1993 after operating successfully for over 20 years, but business owners have used the space for various purposes since 1910.
"The 2nd floor is now our Event Center, and on the 3rd floor is the Cigar Lounge. It was a multi-million-dollar renovation that took one year to complete."
The upstairs bar is nestled in a restored library, with aged books and leather to keep moody drinker's company.
The Cigar lounge is on the top floor of Thompson's where guests are welcome to lounge in leather armchairs or plush sofas as they calmly smoke. The room

showcases its cigar collection in an oversized humidor to ensure a memorable experience for enthusiasts.
"The renovations were carefully planned to ensure seamless integration of the speakeasy concept within the existing structure while preserving the building's historical charm," says Bohn.
The staff even considered musical selections for historical accuracy, and in 1920, jazz was king.
"Jazz music permeates the air," says Bohn. "Transporting guests to the vibrant nights of the Roaring Twenties."
The group's efforts are well executed; the renovation is spotless, a period-accurate triumph. And the similarities to the time aren't limited to the styling, because the basement hides a secret, but this old house isn't haunted, it's hobnobbing.
During the renovation process, AngMar turned the space under the store into an authentic speakeasy only accessible through a bookshelf with a password (found on the bar's Facebook page every night).
"Adorned with a beautifully crafted wooden counter," says Bohn describing the space. "The bar is well-stocked with a selection of premium spirits allowing our mixologists to craft exquisite cocktails reminiscent of the clandestine era."
All of the nostalgia of the remodel doesn't mean the bar lacks modern twists, though. The design concept for Thompson's aims to blend literary charm, Prohibition-era nostalgia, and a touch of sophistication.
"Wooden bookshelves line the walls, filled with carefully curated volumes, creating an atmosphere of intellectual intrigue," says Bohn about the bar interior. "Soft lighting and plush vintage seating areas invite visitors to browse the literary treasures and enjoy a cocktail."
Design elements like exposed brick walls, vintage wallpaper, warm colors, and ornate ceiling moldings strike a decidedly cozy yet moody atmosphere.
"We are proud of the journey we have undertaken to create this unique establishment," Bohn affirms. "And we look forward to welcoming our dedicated and enthusiastic customers to indulge in the captivating ambiance and exceptional offerings that Thompson now provides."
The owners were also concerned with honoring the neighborhood's history.
CONTINUED > 23 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTFORTWORTH SEPTEMBER 2023
"The building that Thompson's Bookstore is in, holds a rich history deeply rooted in the colorful past of Hell's Half Acre, the historic precinct of Fort Worth, Texas," says Bohn. "Hell's Half Acre gained notoriety as a vibrant and raucous red-light district that thrived during the early to mid-1870s in the era of the Old Wild West. This precinct, which encompassed the area around the Thompson’s building, was infamous for its lawlessness, violence, and general atmosphere of revelry. It earned the moniker Bloody Third Ward due to the frequent clashes and criminal activities taking place within its boundaries. By repurposing this building and embracing the speakeasy concept, Thompson's Bookstore pays homage to the area's vibrant and tumultuous past."
One such nod to the area's past is a bootlegger's still inside the speakeasy, a historical artifact and tangible connection to the fascinating history of Hell's Half Acre and its place in Fort Worth.
"It serves as a reminder of the area's transformation and the resilient spirit of those who lived and thrived in the face of adversity during the Old West era," Bohn muses.
And the feelings of reverence for the history of Thompson's have trickled down to the staff, who regularly share information and the significance of the building with interested guests.
"Thompson's Bookstore, speakeasy, and cigar lounge are often fondly referred to as a little slice of Heaven in Hell's Half Acre," explains Bohn. "This affectionate phrase captures the unique juxtaposition of the
MUST SEE | FOOD + BEVERAGE 24
establishment's enchanting ambiance within the historically vibrant and notorious precinct of Fort Worth. It conveys the idea that despite Hell's Half Acre's tumultuous past, Thompson's Bookstore offers a haven of refined elegance and delightful experiences." Proving that a lagoon mirage still exists in the dusty hellscape of the Wild West, a promise of a brief respite from the troubles of the day or era. The same promise that Thomspon's makes to its community and patrons: that the past still makes for the perfect escape.

Perkins Orthodontics announces the lucky student recipient.
Zack Blouin, a newly accepted Texas Christian University freshman and Fort Worth native is this year's winner of the Perkins Orthodontics Scholarship!
2022 was the scholarship's inaugural year, and the first winner, Giovanna Paulino went to Texas A&M to study Kinesiology to improve the lives of professional dancers.
At TCU, Blouin hopes to study Business and advance his personal and professional goals.
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be either a past or present patient of Dr. Perkins or Dr. Spradley of Perkins Orthodontics, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and answer an essay prompt. The essay question was:
HOW WILL THIS SCHOLARSHIP DIRECTLY IMPACT YOUR ABILITY TO ACHIEVE YOUR FUTURE GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?
The deadline for applicants was May 2.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE TEAM AT PERKINS ORTHODONTICS? ARE YOU CLOSE WITH THEM?
I was a patient of Dr. Spradley first and then transitioned to Dr. Perkins when Dr. Spradley retired. So, I am lucky enough to know both of them and their team. They are all great and made everything positive and easy.
HOW DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WON THE SCHOLARSHIP?
The office called my mom, and she told me.
WHAT WAS THE APPLICATION PROCESS LIKE? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPLETE? DID YOU EXPECT TO WIN?
The application process was very straightforward. I spent some time on my
essay and submitted it with my transcript and resume. I have spent the last year writing essays and completing applications, so this was smooth. I had no idea if I would win.
WHAT DID YOU WRITE ABOUT IN YOUR ESSAY? WHY DO YOU THINK YOU WERE SELECTED?
I wrote about being lucky to know Dr. Spradley and Dr. Perkins and how excited I am to attend TCU. I also wrote about being responsible for a portion of my tuition and my commitment to seeking all sources of support. I don’t know what determined the final decision, but I’m grateful to be chosen.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m from Fort Worth.
WHERE DID YOU GO TO HIGH SCHOOL? DID YOU LIKE IT? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR EXTRACURRICULARS? FAVORITE CLASS?
I graduated from Trinity Valley School, where I played football, baseball, and enjoyed Spanish and History class.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
I will spend the next four years studying Business at TCU.
WHAT DOES THIS SCHOLARSHIP MEAN TO YOU?
This scholarship provides a meaningful contribution to my goal; I am very proud to have earned it.
Good luck to Zack Blouin at Texas Christian University next year!

Operation Gentleman Is Where Service Meets Style
The non-profit outfits and cares for veterans looking to make a new start in life.
ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN
As Bill Cunningham once said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” And no one knows the power of armor or the reality of returning to everyday life than someone who has served our country in the armed forces.
Ben Davis, the founder of The Gents Place, an upscale grooming establishment for men, comes from a long line of those who served in the military. His father and grandfather were in the Air Force and his brother is in the Navy, so service has always been important in his life. In 2017, he decided he wanted to do something
for veterans, and a suit drive popped up as an option. Naturally, he wondered how The Gents Place could be involved. “All our guests are well dressed, and this idea immediately caught on. We asked members, and the dialogue gave us the confidence to do the drive. Some had several suits they no longer wore or longer fit, and they were happy to donate,” says Davis.
This first drive collected suits from all over the country and was a huge success. Now an annual event under Operation Gentleman, it is estimated over 10 thousand suits and 20 thousand pieces of CONTINUED >

business wear have been collected for veterans transitioning from military to civilian life, with donations coming from everywhere, including locations with no brick-and-mortar locations of The Gents Place. “It’s evolved. It started with our members and has grown to include donations from former Cowboys player Charles Haley, friends of members, and even wives of members who donate businesswear for female veterans. Huge companies have donated clothing as well,” says Davis.
The suit drive runs from Sept. 1 - Sept. 30 every year and collects items, including suits, ties, belts, shoes, shirts, cuff links, and more, which get shipped to the distribution center to be sorted by size. Then, just in time for Veteran’s Day in November, volunteers head for the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Hood, TX, where military veterans being discharged and dealing with life-altering issues such as amputation, PTSD, and depression, can ‘shop’ an event that feels like spending an afternoon at Neiman Marcus.
Team members act as personal shoppers to the veterans, partners have donated shaving cream and hair pomade, and as a special touch, Operation Gentleman has produced a book filled with positive comments, business cards, inspiring quotes, job leads, and other helpful tips that serve as yet another way to boost a veteran’s outlook on transitioning to civilian life.
“We realized that we’re giving a lot of these men and women confidence and belief in themselves. The clothing is great, but the emotions we’re giving them through the experience are the value we’re providing,” says Davis.
Since starting the suit drive, Davis has continued to help veterans. When you purchase a membership at The Gents Place, you feed a homeless veteran, and according to Davis, 40 thousand meals have been donated so far. Davis says, “Each club has a meal count board. Our goal is to get to 100 thousand meals in 2023. We’re always trying to figure out how to collect a bit of money to collect a meal.”
Operation Gentleman also arranges a monthly Haircuts for Our Homeless event at the Austin Street Center, a homeless and rehabilitation center

in downtown Dallas. Over 2000 services have been given to those experiencing homelessness since the pop-up barbershop started.
When I asked Davis where he sees Operation Gentleman going, he told me that he sees an opportunity to reach other veterans at bases all across the United States. He also hopes to expand Operation Gentleman’s partnerships to include other barber shops and retail stores.
There are currently 12 locations of The Gents Place. It’s where connections happen; guests gain more confidence and empowerment and walk out the door feeling more positive. “I hated getting my haircut. I wanted a place I wanted to go. And now, The Gents Place is much more than a service. We offer shoe shines, events, a member lounge, a cigar patio, and a full-service bar. It’s a place where likeminded people can network. The haircut is just the vehicle that gets someone in the door,” says Davis.
It’s clear that Davis has taken his passion and the mindset of The Gents Place and put it to work helping veterans get a fresh start in life. To check out their services or get a membership, head to the Fort Worth club location at 2300 West 7th St., Suite 126.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS OF CUSTOMIZED CARE
OPTICAL ON THE
ARTICLE BY GABBY CULLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHANTELLE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY
It started with a visit to a mall and a walk by Lenscrafters. Fernando Vargas was 18 when he saw the “Now Hiring” sign and applied on the spot. Shortly after, he began his now 20+ career as an optician and never looked back.
Jonathan Cotter was his friend, and when Fernando suggested he join him as a technician, Jonathan gave it a shot. They’ve been co-workers in various capacities ever since. Now co-owners of Optical on the Bricks, a boutique frame and glass shop in Fort Worth’s Cultural District, these friends are in the business of caring about and understanding clients’ issues with eyewear and, more importantly, being able to fix them.
Jonathan and Fernando have co-owned Optical on the Bricks for three years. Jonathan, who at the time was traveling around Texas and working in doctor’s offices' training staff on sales tactics and opticians to read prescriptions and cut lenses, decided it was time to switch to entrepreneurship and set out for himself. And, who better to join his endeavor than his friend and former co-worker?
Most of their career has been in the back of a shop reading prescriptions and making lenses. “We aren’t just salesmen; we’re lens nerds. You want to know something about lenses or optics? We’re your guys. We know from the beginning what it takes to make your eyewear,” says Jonathan.

BRICKS FINDS EYEWEAR FOR EVERY WALK OF LIFE.

Both Fernando and Jonathan are certified opticians in the state of Texas, and they take pride in the unique customer service they offer at Optical on the Bricks. Since they are a small operation, they can offer lines of frames you might not find online or at big box stores. “We work with other small businesses and specialize in things other people don’t pay attention to.” You can find frames from lines such as Silhouette, Garrett Leight, John Varvatos, Adrienne Vittandini, Betsey Johnson, Maui Jim, and Wiley X - a line of safety frames.
You’re going to get quality care at Optical on the Bricks. When asked what a visit might look like, Fernando says, “We’ll spend some time asking questions about what a patient does for a living, what hobbies they enjoy in their free time. This will let us know what type of
frame and lens is right for the client. We want to make sure we accommodate that person’s needs. Sometimes, it’s multiple pairs: a pair for cooking, a pair for the computer. It all begins by engaging with the patient.”
Because of their background, they know about rare and unusual lenses for specific purposes. Through their questions, Optical on the Bricks can uncover those needs and make your eyewear work for you. “Coming from a lab background, we’re used to troubleshooting. Based on what our clients want or need, we fill that gap. By providing something we know how to deal with very well, we’re separating ourselves from everyone else,” says Jonathan.
Optical on the Bricks is dedicated to the craftsmanship of the frame. “With so many

places going online, customized eyewear is becoming a lost art form. It’s that patient satisfaction we’re trying to keep. It can be frustrating if you don’t understand what’s going on with your prescription and can’t speak to anyone,” notes Jonathan.
They cut their lenses on-site, something you don’t see often. When customers come in to update an old pair of frames, they’ll make the new lenses in the shop, and you don’t have to leave your glasses with the opticians—you’ll never be without them.
They’re happy to swap a lens in a pair of frames you love without insisting you buy another pair; they offer free adjustments and cleaning, a commitment to excellence you don’t see everywhere. “We say yes because it’s the right thing for the patient. Our goal is even if you didn’t get them from us; we’re hoping you’ll return when you do need a new pair of frames,” says Jonathan.
Being a small brick-and-mortar operation allows Jonathan and Fernando to get to know their patients and get better at what they do.
“I talked myself out of a sale once for a client who had visited several locations and was told she needed all new frames. I spent 10 minutes looking at her lenses, and Jonathan spent 10 minutes talking to her, and we ended up doing a free adjustment which completely fixed her problem and kept her from having to buy new glasses. It’s that level of commitment to eyewear and being able to interact with everyone that we love,” says Fernando.
“IT’S THAT LEVEL OF COMMITMENT TO EYEWEAR AND BEING ABLE TO INTERACT WITH EVERYONE THAT WE LOVE.”

FALL FASHION
A local influencer shares 2023 Fall trends.
Howdy y’all. It's Alison Epperley here - western fashion influencer and content creator. You may have seen me on Instagram under the handle @alisonepperely. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to share my thoughts and expertise on all things western fashion for this fall season.
Get ready to embrace the spirit of the Wild West and saddle up because we are going to be talking about the four main fashion trends you will see this fall. This season brings a wide variety of changes in fashion trends, from monochromatic denim to vintage looks, so let's dive in.
ARTICLE BY ALISON EPPERLEY

44
FIRST TREND: THE MONOCHROMATIC DENIM LOOK.
One of the most timeless western looks is denim on denim. I truly believe that this is a trend that will never go out of style. Some seasons, it appears more often than others, and the current fall season is no exception. A few things you should always remember when trying out this look are to contrast your shades. The more contrast - the better. Another tip is to layer your look. Adding a white tee with denim jeans and a denim jacket is a perfect way to enhance your look. If you don’t want to layer this look, simply pair a denim button-up with a pair of your favorite Wranglers.

The fringe trend is one you can never forget. In the fall, it can be hard to wear an outfit that is fun because of the weather, but when you add fringe to a look, it completely changes the game. Fringe has the power to create movement and a sense of bohemian flair into any ensemble, making it the perfect statement piece for the season.
When you are pairing your outfit with a fringe jacket, consider adding a more structured piece to the look for the bottoms, such as a suede or leather skirt. The contrast between the fun look of the fringe and the simplicity of the skirt creates the perfect outfit for any event.
SECOND TREND: FRINGE.
ARTIST’S PALETTE | SHOPPING 46
THIRD TREND: COASTAL COWGIRL IN THE FALL.
Coastal Cowgirl not only made an appearance this year but completely created a permanent spot in western fashion. Stores have incorporated elements of this style into their collections and some of the main influencers in the community have loved this trend. This fall, I believe we are going to see the fall version of coastal cowgirl. This will look like lots of warmer tones being used but embracing the free and fun vibes that this trend brings. Pairing a cozy sweater with a maxi skirt, enhanced by your choice of a western belt, creates an on-trend outfit for the season.

SOME OF MY FAVORITE STORES IN FORT WORTH TO SHOP AT
• Sassy Pantz
• The Twisted Gypsy
• Double D Ranch
• Tucker Brown
• Maverick Fine Western Wear
• Pinkies
Fall western fashion trends are all about embracing the spirit of the Wild West while adding a modern twist. From monochromatic looks to vintage, there are plenty of ways to incorporate these trends into your fall wardrobe. So, let’s embrace our inner cowgirl and get ready to rock these looks all season long.
FOURTH AND FINAL TREND: WESTERN VINTAGE
Vintage will never go out of style. In my opinion, it will be the biggest trend of the fall in 2023. From vintage layered tees to unique statement pieces, this style will be all over your Instagram feed.
This trend has a nostalgic appeal by celebrating the timeless beauty of Western vintage fashion. Embracing this look allows you to experience the thrill of fashion hunting for hidden gems at local western thrift stores. One of the best places to find your vintage items is stores like The Second Hand Sorrel. The best part about this look is that your entire outfit doesn’t have to be vintage; simply find a statement piece and build your outfit around it.

DIY at Home Theater
Our family had so much fun creating this At-Home Movie Theater party for our son Ezra’s 8th birthday. All you need is a projector and an outdoor space, but I wanted to jazz it up just a little bit more.

TICKET BOOTH
I created a ticket booth and concession stand for a full movie theater experience to ensure that our movie night felt like our guests were actually going to a movie theater and not just our house. In attempt to achieve that, we set up a ticket booth at the front door using our kids old puppet theater.
Materials:
• Tickets
• Ticket Booth (optional)
Before entering our theater (aka our backyard), I set up a shadow box for guests to place their entry ticket.
PEGBOARD DISPLAY WALL
I love displaying food in a creative way at our parties. I made this simple DIY Popcorn Display Wall as a statement piece in our concession stand. We have also used it in many other ways for other parties such as a donut wall, bagel wall, pretzel wall and more. You can easily recreate your own for your next party.
Materials:
• Pegboard. I chose the 4ft square size at Lowes for $10 and spray painted it white.
• Frame (optional). I bought two 1x4’s for $5 each, cut 2 pieces 4ft long and 2 pieces 3.5ft long, stained minwax walnut, attached to pegboard with screws through the back.
• Twine to string popcorn bags. Or, if you’re using the pegboard display for donuts, bagels or pretzels then use golf tees hot glued into holes from behind!
• Clothes pins to hang popcorn bags.
• Popcorn bags

SET THE SCENE!
CONCESSION STAND FINISHING TOUCHES
My daughter handed out tickets for guests to use to “purchase” their popcorn, candy and drinks at the concession stand.
Materials:
• Popcorn Machine (optional)
• Popcorn
• Popcorn flavors for guests to get creative!
• Candy - Use boxes rather than bags for movie theater vibes!
• Soda - Use bottles rather than cans
• Napkins
• Cupcake toppers & Plates (if its a birthday celebration)
• Reused boxes and spray painted them white for guests to easily carry their snacks
I cut out red stars (from foam sheets) and stuck them to the floor (with adhesive putty) to lead guest through the house to the concession stand and back outside to where our movie was going to take place.
Finally, our guests could choose their seating on chairs or blankets around our yard. I also set up a little bug-spray table for people to grab as needed. Dramatic play, even as an adult, is so much fun! Who says staying home can’t be just as entertaining?
I hope you have as much fun at your party as we did! I’d love if you tagged me @silvertoothfarmhome so I can see your At-Home Movie Theater too!! In reflecting on the party, my son said that “the best part of the night was eating candy with my friends.” After all, people are what matter most!

Our Favorite Bourbons
Under $150
ARTICLE BY ANTHONY ADAMS
We were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon under $150 and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared.
Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!
Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.
BLANTON’S SINGLE BARREL BOURBON
Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.
— BlantonsBourbon.com ($100-$150)
BASIL HAYDEN’S RYE BOURBON –AGED 10 YEARS
In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.
— BasilHaydens.com ($75-$100)
PINHOOK ‘BOURBON WAR’ VERTICAL SERIES 5 YEARS
Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,
cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.
— PinhookBourbon.com ($75-$50)
EAGLE RARE 10 YEAR
Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.
— EagleRare.com ($30-$50)
OLD FORESTER 86 PROOF
While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.
— OldForester.com ($20-$30)
MCAFEE’S BENCHMARK OLD NO. 8
Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.
— BuffaloTraceDistillery.com (Under $20)
