Ladie's Issue

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. This past year I had the honor and privilege of becoming a mom which has made me even more thankful for the women in my life, especially my mom. My mom and I have always been close but after having my own baby I have a new appreciation for everything she has done for me. People have often told me that you don’t realize how much you need your mom until you become a mom yourself and I couldn’t agree more! I’ve never been more thankful for her.

With Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Fort Worth women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Fort Worth Designer Draws Out a Client’s Vision to Turn a House into a Home

Kay Genua doesn’t want a trademark look. She wants to put your personality on display.

Warm, yummy, cozy. Those are the words interior designer Kay Genua’s clients used to describe what they wanted her to achieve on a recent project. Over a year in the making, she knew the house was unique as soon as she walked in. It would be the fifth project for the couple she’s known for over 30 years. “I know them so well. Their personality shines through on this home.”

Kay’s clients were looking to downsize: He’s semi-retired, she’s retired, their kids are grown, and they simply didn’t need all the extra space, including the exercise room, the playroom, and all the additional bedrooms. The couple had plans to build in the same neighborhood as their new home—they found a lot and had plans drawn, but when the house

became available for purchase, they took one look and knew that it checked “a lot of boxes,” according to Genua. “The thought was, ‘This is here, this is ready, we can move in.’ They called me and said, ‘Kay, I think you’re going to love it.’ It’s got our personality written all over it,” recalls Genua.

When she walked into the space, she agreed with her clients. “I immediately felt like it was right for them. It has beautiful woodwork, carvings, and special details. Plus, their furniture transitioned into this house beautifully. Their library furniture worked in the new library. Their living room furniture fit perfectly in the new living room.”

Genua’s clients love antiques and have a few collections, including miniature antique

chairs and plates. For that reason, many details in the new space told Kay it was the right one. “If the front door wasn’t an antique, it sure looked like it. The wainscotting was stunning; the built-in bookshelves were perfect for displaying treasures. Some houses just feel like walls. This one had a soul to it. My wheels were twirling the minute I walked in.”

Kay and her clients discussed their vision for the new space. “I know them so well, and we’re usually on the same page. It’s fun to show them my ideas. They are tactile; they want everything to be wonderful to the touch.” Their old house had a lot of blues, and the clients envisioned greens for this project. “I have a photographic memory, and when I walked through the first time, I could place 90% of their furniture. We didn’t need to obsolete a lot of things.” Genua says she’s old-school when it comes to her projects. “I place the furniture by hand. Once I know what I want and how I want to use the space, and then I start looking for fabrics.”

One piece Genua hoped would work in the new space was the Asmara living room rug, which she had found at Interior Resources in Dallas. “It’s what I call a ‘thinker.’ It is a special rug, and I was thrilled it worked with the new measurements. Since we switched from blues to greens, now the rug feels fresh; it has a whole new flavor.” In particular, it worked perfectly with the green velvet sofas the client envisioned for the new living room. The couple’s collection of artwork also took on a new life. “It’s all really interesting, not your usual stuff. It was fun placing the art and using it in a new way,” said Genua.

The kitchen was near perfect as is. It has an island, beautiful cabinets and counters, and the breakfast area is surrounded by windows, creating a charming space that the clients especially loved. It is now the husband’s favorite spot in the home. “He adores sitting by the fireplace,” says Genua. They bought a rug to place under the kitchen table, and his favorite chair is one with a channeled back repurposed from the exercise room in their former home. “I told him to sit in all his chairs and find out which one he likes best.”

They re-purposed a former piano area as a reading space for the couple. Genua found two new wingback chairs, added a cool chandelier, and displayed the couple’s antique miniature chair collection on the built-in bookshelves.

CONTINUED > 17 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTFORTWORTH MAY 2023

The outdoor space is small but mighty. It’s a zero-lot line and has a beautiful covered patio. Genua added a fireplace and noted that several pieces of the couple’s outdoor furniture fit into the space.

Genua made several updates to the master bedroom, including wallpaper, carpet, and drapes. When brainstorming her ideas for the space, she found a stunning wallpaper and fabric from Brunschwig & Fils. “I suggested that we use the same print all around the wall and on the bay windows. It’s all blues, browns, and greens—very powerful. It’s like a cocoon.” Her client agreed.

What other changes did Kay make in the new house? She mentioned that while the rest of the house had the unique details the clients loved, the mirrors, tile, and counters in the master bath were more ordinary—so they re-did them. And, not every piece they loved worked in the new space. “We didn’t get to use the Welch dresser. It used to be in the breakfast room, and we would change out the display of plates and antique chairs for the holidays, but there wasn’t room for it,” says Kay.

It was a special project, and Genua says she still makes adjustments even to this day, most recently having added an antique mirror and new artwork. “We never tend to be done,” she says.

Kay Genua has been working in interior design for over 30 years. With a business degree from Tulane, she fell into her career when she started working for The Market Antiques and Home Furnishings. “I’m selftaught. I’ve learned over the years that you can’t teach someone how to display a bookshelf, you can’t teach fabrics, you can’t teach how to make a room a room. That’s something you have or you don’t.”  While Kay has a studio workspace, she prefers to visit a potential client’s home so she can envision what the job will entail. “I want to see their style, which direction they want to go in. I pride myself on tailoring every project to every client.” She doesn’t have a trademark look, and that’s the way she wants it. “I never want someone to walk into a room and say, ‘Oh, Kay did this.’ I want someone to walk into a room and say, ‘this room is stunning; who did it?’”  Find out more about Genua Designs at kaygenuadesigns.com or @kaygenuadesigns.

The Years Bring Wisdom

FEMALE BUSINESS OWNERS IN FORT WORTH SHARE ADVICE FOR THEIR YOUNGER SELVES

Women’s relationships are undoubtedly impactful during their development, starting at a young age. But what about the relationship women have with themselves? For high-achieving ladies involved in the Fort Worth business world, it’s easy to continue moving forward without stopping to assess; and it can be difficult to stop and look at how far they’ve come and even, gasp, celebrate themselves and their accomplishments.

A good pause gives us a moment to congratulate ourselves on a job well done or thank ourselves for the sacrifices we made while pursuing a dream.

For the Women’s Issue, seven female Fort Worth business owners and entrepreneurs walk us through their rise in business, the advice they would give to their younger selves, and the dreams they kept as children. Proving that if you believe in yourself, your dreams can come true; maybe not how your younger self-imagined, but true, nonetheless.

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

I either wanted to be an attorney or an interior designer. I have always been interested in law but landed in design and really enjoyed it.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE

IN?

I went to work for the company I interned for during college. During my intern I was involved in kitchen and bath designs and loved it. From there, I did a few other things in the interior design field but ultimately loved the remodeling side of the business. I love to design, and it brings me joy to help my clients create a space they love and can be proud of.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Never judge yourself in comparison to others. Do what truly makes you happy and be confident.

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

When I was a kid, I wanted to do exactly what my parents did at the time. I wanted to work for a company for a long time and make enough money to support my family. They taught me to be loyal to a company versus going out on my own with an entrepreneurial state of mind. I think 90% of parents raise their children with the same mindset. My parents taught me great morals and values as their parents did for them. And they taught me to follow my dreams, although I never thought I would be doing what I am doing today.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE IN?

Functional medicine has always been a passion of mine. I have been involved in healthcare for 14 years and experienced different treatment methods. When my husband and I developed our company, we wanted to be more than just an IV hydration clinic. We wanted to provide our clients with an experience and place where they could achieve a whole health approach to their needs and wants. As we have continued to develop our company over the past two years, we have provided additional offerings to our clients that allow them to take control of their health and wellness. We saw a concept that companies were offering, and we took that concept and created a more inclusive business model within health care.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

I would tell my younger self to have all the confidence in the world. To know that I could achieve greatness. When I was younger, I was shy and honestly did not know what I was capable of achieving. I never dreamed of owning my own business. Over the years, I have developed confidence, taken my knowledge, and turned it into something great that helps people. I look at my business as my legacy. I will teach my children that entrepreneurship is possible for them as well.

“We wanted to provide our clients with an experience and place where they could achieve a whole health approach to their needs and wants.”

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

My entire adolescence was built around sports, fastpitch being my main love. As a result of my passion and dedication to the sport, I continued my career after high school as a collegiate player. During high school and college, I discovered my passion for working with children to enhance their chances of college success through sports. That experience led me to graduate with a degree in Education where I pursued the career I loved for almost 20 years. Building a team atmosphere in the classroom and on the field was a job I happily woke up to every day. Being a part of the success of past students and athletes is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE IN?

My husband and I have been happily married for almost 13 years now. At that time, we had three beautiful children who brought tons of joy to our lives and multiple activities after school, such as choir, sports, and UIL competitions. I quickly realized that doing the profession I loved was causing me to miss out on many milestones in their lives that a parent does not want to miss.

My husband was in the pool industry for our entire marriage, and we were contemplating starting our own business. While the idea of owning our business was promising and exciting, it also meant that, as a team, he needed me to help build it. After many prayers together about our next adventure in life, God led us to the scary decision to leave the profession I loved, take what I had learned as a teacher and a coach, and help apply them to the business world. Building a successful, supportive team is where I thrive the most. Building a team as an owner of The Complete Backyard Inc. with my husband was no different.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

It is important to have plans and goals for your life, but write them in pencil. What I mean is it’s always good to plan and have a clear direction for where you want your life to go. Relish in the talents the Lord bestowed upon you. However, unexpected curveballs can be thrown your way, and it is silly to ignore them simply because they weren’t a part of your original plan. Live your life with open arms, an open heart, and an open mind. You will end up right where you are meant to be.

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

I wanted to rodeo, specifically barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, and cutting. I loved working with horses and riding. I grew up on a ranch on the Oklahoma and Colorado Stateline and lived there until I graduated from high school. Then I moved to town.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE IN?

We were looking for something to do so I could retire my husband, Ty, from Corporate America since we are too young to retire. We were looking for something to start up together, but the oil and gas company my husband worked for kept him on after a merger. So that has left me running everything from the setup to all the day-to-day operations with ProLift Garage Doors of West Ft Worth.

We’ve been open for business for a year, and I love every minute of it. It’s not something I would have picked for myself to do, but I’m so glad that it worked out this way. I look forward to seeing what the future holds. Hopefully, it’s something I can hand down to my daughter.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Go try new things, and don’t be afraid! You can do anything you put your mind to with God’s grace and a whole lot of prayers.

“I look forward to seeing what the future holds. Hopefully, it’s something I can hand down to my daughter.”

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

In elementary school, I always said I wanted to be a mom. My mom is my best friend, and she dedicated everything to my sister and me, and I just knew I wanted to do the same for my family. But over time, sports came calling, and having a career where I could be active and help my community do the same was a decision I made in college.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE IN?

At the University of Texas at Arlington, I decided to pursue Exercise Science/ Fitness and Wellness. When I graduated, I dove headfirst into opening a recreation facility with the City of Burleson. I wore many hats with the City of Southlake Community Services Department, creating events and managing an event venue.

From there, I spent 15 years in the Municipal government, and afterward, our family decided to use our skills to grow the family business at Vigor Active. I manage the downtown fitness facility operations and love interacting with our members, team, and community. After almost two years in this role, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Be confident, patient, and don’t be afraid to lead and trust in your faith that God is in control.

Early in my career, I wanted to excel and be the best all the time, but I lost myself in my career. I always gave 110% to others but found that isn’t enough, and there are politics that you won’t have any control over. I would encourage my young self to be patient and follow my faith, don’t get involved in the toxicity and get discouraged because there is a beautiful world out there and new chapters ahead.

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a teacher or lawyer. When my older stepsister said she wanted to be a lawyer, I decided to be a teacher because, God forbid, I follow in her shadow. (Insert eye roll). Then in college, a miracle occurred, and she switched paths to become a teacher. That opened the door for me to become a lawyer. We laugh about this to this day.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE IN?

I sped through college and law school because I was not a good student and could not grasp what the professors wanted. c Frankly, it was a huge risk. I really had no idea what I was getting into, but somewhere deep down, I knew that more education was a better bet on the pathway to becoming truly independent, so I flipped the coin and took a chance. I want to thank my student loan lenders for taking a chance on me, as well. Thankfully, I took to it and have no regrets.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

I would tell my younger self to embrace each and every opportunity to fail and to run away from the “safe” paths. I’m older now and just wish I could sleep in or take a nap.

“I waited tables and went to every “free pizza party” until I landed a real job as a lawyer.”

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

As a child, I wanted to be an artist. I still enjoy drawing. As a teenager, my dream was to become a small-town newspaper editor. Although things didn’t work out regarding a career in journalism, I truly enjoy editing. I have edited a tremendous number of college papers, letters, and other correspondence for my family and friends. One of my co-workers even gave me a plaque that says, “I’m silently correcting your grammar.”

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY YOU ARE IN?

In 2013, I was asked by a good friend, who was just starting his HVAC business, to help him with bookkeeping on a part-time basis. We ended up making a great team and became partners. I now manage the admin side of the company and am a company co-owner.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

I would tell my younger self to take much better care of my skin and body. I should have started my “staying young” regiment a long time ago.

Fort Worth Junior Woman’s Club

WHEN WOMEN SUPPORT EACH OTHER, EVERYONE WINS.

There is a uniqueness to female friendships. Scientists are learning with increased certainty that female support systems are vital for success within the home and workplace.

The Junior Woman's Club of Fort Worth, a local non-profit organization promoting social welfare, knows the impact of female-driven support systems all too well. The Junior Club, consisting of young women aged 21-40, is an offshoot of The Woman's Club of Fort Worth, where members transition after 40; founded in 1926 and presided over by President Camilla Campbell until 1928. Today, the JWC President is Britta Hinze, but each year the club elects a new volunteer Executive Committee consisting of a President and various officers.

In the club, mentorship matters. Older Woman's Club members oversee the operations of each junior group to ensure the younger ladies have adequate support. "Many of them were in Junior Woman's Club 10-25 years ago," explains Hinze.

"Members can join one or more of the 11 Groups within JWC that meet at least once a month. We have Groups that focus on food and culinary arts, wellness, dance,

physical activity, new experiences, appreciation of the arts, and dining out at new restaurants, among other activities."

For the JWC, every activity also benefits the community. This past December, the ladies held a holiday community action event at The Bearded Lady with a costumed Santa Claus and The Grinch as special guests. "We invited Love & Paws Pet Rescue to partner with us," says Hinze. "The general public was welcome to take free photos with our dressed-up characters and learn about the pet rescue. There were four dog adoptions from that event, plus the pet rescue received monetary donations. Our biggest fundraiser is our annual Spring Show Musical, created and performed by our members (plus a few gentlemen). We put on this year's show, Say You'll Be There, at The Ridglea Theater."

Every year the events vary depending on who is on the Executive Committee. In previous years, the JWC has hosted golf tournament fundraisers, a club softball tournament, Easter Tea with the Easter Bunny, a petting zoo, home tours, and shopping boutiques. Past theme parties include Rocky Horror Picture Show, Mardi Gras, Great Gatsby 20s, Monster

Mash Halloween, Karaoke, Colonial Caddy Shack, Kentucky Derby, Glory Days high school throwback, & western.

"I am happy to see our membership growth this year post-pandemic," says Hinze about the club's future. "We'll be able to put on bigger and even more amazing events with our continued club growth. Looking at a healthy, sustainable horizon for the club is incredibly exciting."

Hinze joined the JWC 10 years ago to make friends and network, slowly the club became her community; a home away from home to connect with women of similar interests, attend super social events, and form lifelong friendships. "There are awesome events on the calendar every month," she gushes. "So I always have fun things to do to keep me busy and active. I am so grateful for the friends I have made through Junior Woman's Club."

GARDEN TO GLASS

DIY COCKTAILS WITH FRESH HERBS

Nothing says spring like the aroma of fresh cut herbs in a crisp, cold, cocktail. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites.

Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways- from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch.

Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure and harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to the Gin Basil Cucumber cocktail.

Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry infused Bourbon.

Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room, as it likes to spread out and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Mint is a versatile herb but is especially lovely in the Rhubarb Mint Mojito.

Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.

A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care.

When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
