LIFESTYLE LETTER
Local Love
February 2023 PUBLISHER
Hunter Martinez | hunter.martinez@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Hannah Barricks | hannah.barricks@citylifestyle.com
I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Summer Moon and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Put a Cork In It and some cheese from Central Market and indulge on a movie night in. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

BIG DAY, BIG CHOICES Local experts are here to help you make educated decisions for your big day.
Getting everything pulled together for a wedding can feel like a daunting task. For our Local Love issue, we gathered some local experts who gave us some great advice when it comes to planning your big day!
ASHLEY MCNABB ARTISTRY I always encourage my brides to be themselves but amplified. Sometimes a bride wants to experiment a different makeup from their usual look on their wedding day because they want to look extra special, my advice is to be yourself! Trust that your makeup artist will bring out your best features! A bridal trial is vital! You want to make sure you and your glamsquad are on the same page as on the biggest day of your life. Have realistic, inspiration pictures closely resembling your own skin tones,

hair colors, bone structure, eye shapes, hair length, etc. It is also important that you research the artist. Make sure your aesthetics match up, Instagram is a great source to view their work.
THE 4 ELEVEN Every decision made regarding your wedding plays a part in curating your big day. Your venue is arguably one of the most impactful pieces of this beautiful puzzle. Though this may sound like it could be a stressful decision, if you follow our tips, they will help peacefully guide you to a perfect space that is everything you want for you and your loved ones. When choosing a venue, pick one that fits your wedding style and theme, guest list size, and budget. For example, If you want to serve certain types of food and drink, maybe you and your fiancés favorite cocktail or meal make sure you can use any vendors you’d like. Check date availability prior to touring venues. Have a conversation with your fiancé and decide if you’re willing to be flexible with your wedding date, based on venue availability. Don’t stress over the little details, your wedding will be wonderful and your guests will have a great time! At the end of the day, you’re married and that’s all that matters!
EMERALD BRIDAL Don’t overbook yourself… As big of an event as this is and as much as you want this moment to last forever, don’t overwhelm yourself by booking 3…4…5 different bridal appointments. Honestly, 2 in a day is max we’d ever recommend for a bride. There is a very fine line between enjoying your wedding dress shopping experience and it becoming that nightmare of a situation where you’ve tried on 200+ dresses and have lost complete sight of your wedding vision. Every bride’s journey is unique and quite honestly should be because no two brides are the same. Your best bet at not getting to that overshopped bride level is doing your research. Connect with the shops by following them on social media, reading their reviews, and stalking their website to really get to know who they are! Figure out why you’d want to be a bride with them and half the battle is already done! Bride knows best! Choose your entourage wisely. They will make or break your appointment. This is an emotionally charged decision and if your entire entourage isn’t on your side, it can turn from a happy memory to something you never want to remember faster than you can say “I want to be an Emerald Bride!!” Less is more when it comes to who you bring with you. The more opinions that get involved, the easier it is to get overwhelmed. And while Aunt Martha might mean well when she tells CONTINUED >

you she thinks that dress looks like her tablecloth, in reality, it just crushed your dreams of wanting to be this bohemian beauty on your wedding day! Only bring the people you can be your true self around! The ones that you can cry with, laugh with, and most importantly, the ones you feel secure enough with to be like “hey, I love this dress so I need your support to love this with me.” Eat, drink, and BE MARRIED For the love of all things good, please give yourself a well-rounded meal and hydrate before your wedding dress appointment. We know it’s tempting to want to look your “skinniest” while trying on dresses. But, believe us when we say trying on dresses should be considered a sport. You sweat, you jump in and out, you squat, and you walk around, it's 100x more physical than you ever expected it to be. Your body needs fuel to be mentally and physically present. It is more harmful to starve yourself in hopes you look your “best” trying on dresses than it is to be slightly bloated and have the mental clarity/ability to know you’re having a bridal moment when it’s happening.
PANTHER CITY JEWELERS Jewelry for your wedding will be some of the most permanent and important pieces for the day.

After the last dance has been shared, all the food has been eaten and everyone has gone home, what you will be left with as a reminder of this wonderful day will be your wedding ring. Everyone on that day will want to see it and every day after, you will see it. Your wedding ring will be the one object that is a constant reminder that you have love for another and are yourself loved. When purchasing your rings be sure to keep in mind these will be worn every day for the rest of your life, so we tell people to aim for comfort. Comfort in the size of your rings all the way down to what you are wanting to budget for. It’s important to remember your rings are a representation of a lifelong commitment between you and your soon-to-be spouse. Next, be sure you have a trusted/responsible person to be in charge of your rings when the day comes. With it being a very busy day for the bride and groom having someone entrusted with two of the most important items for the wedding can relieve a bit of stress. Last but not least! And this is one we cannot stress enough. Get your rings cleaned and inspected before the wedding. There will be many pictures taken on that day and many will feature your rings. We suggest getting them cleaned/inspected at least one week or even a few days before. Whether it's a new ring or a family heirloom, a little TLC goes a long way in bringing them to life. After the inspection and cleaning, put them away and don’t wear them until your wedding day.
CAMELLIA FARM FLORA Wedding flowers present your style to all your friends and family at your wedding. Flowers are part of the wedding that they see. They create the aesthetic of the celebration, whether it be romantic, whimsical, casual, or modern. Amazing florists book up far in advance. I recommend booking your florist 12 months pre-wedding. Start by looking at reviews, reviews, reviews! Not only do you want to read the reviews, but dig deep into this, read every single review you can find. I recommend using only florists with 4.5 stars or higher. Stalk their work on social media. Feel comfortable that your florist "gets you" and the vibe for your wedding. Ask them for photos of their own work in your style and of particular floral pieces you are looking for. Find a florist that you know will invest their skill into your perfect celebration. There are florists and there are floral designers. If you shop with only price in mind, you may be disappointed. Seek out those designers that consider themselves artists (like myself). These designers will be excited about your wedding vision and making the vision come to life! CONTINUED >

Regenerative Farming
ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS
The Maxwell family spearheads the living soil movement in Texas
28

“Most of our farm soils are dead,” explains Kevin Maxwell sitting next to his wife Stephanie at their winery in Stone Trough Mercantile in Cleburne, called The Merc. The Maxwells own and operate several businesses, growing up in the same hometown before finding their way into the construction world; a realm Stephanie still works in. The couple's background in construction makes sense because the Maxwells are builders. In 2016, the
Maxwell Family acquired Fingerprint Farms, a 325-acre ranch behind The Merc. With zero background in farming, Kevin lacked apprehension in thinking outside of the conventionally used farming systems. “We focused on the soil,” says Kevin. “Most farmers put the glyphosate, fertilizers, and other chemicals on the soil, and it kills it.” The Maxwells, along with their children: Cole, Hayden, and Kendall, desired to farm in a safe, chemical-free way. “In the regenerative
system, we don’t put herbicides, fungicides, or any ‘cides’ on the farm,” says Kevin. “We encourage diversity of species in the soil, plants, livestock, wildlife, and insects present on the farm.” Kevin became acquainted with regenerative agricultural practices while on vacation in Ruidoso skiing. Stephanie’s aunt wanted the couple to come down to Tularosa for dinner. “We got to talking with Stephanie’s uncle Randy," says Kevin. “He’s a CONTINUED > FEBR UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . water scientist, and he got an idea about our new farm. He said there was somebody he’d like to arrange for us to meet named Dr. David Johnson.” Johnson travels across the world to teach farmers about a method of composting that produces materials that jump-start soil regeneration. Randy called up Dr. Johnson and invited the Maxwells to another dinner. They ended up talking for hours. Dr. Johnson, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, possessed a deep understanding of agricultural systems and was surprisingly a former home builder like Kevin. “During dinner, we got to talking about leaky gut,” says Stephanie, an affliction affecting their family, particularly their youngest daughter. “She was always sick and had trouble eating. David said it was the junk that she was eating. The glyphosate they spray on our food destroys the gut microbiome and lining.” Johnson also exposed the Maxwells to the concept of living soil versus dirt. He explained to the couple how the soil microbiome operates, and, at once, Kevin saw similarities between the functions of the soil and his daughter’s gut. “Johnson said ‘they’re exactly the same’,” reveals Kevin. “It’s the circle of life. And that’s what regenerative farming is. It’s about embracing life.” The Maxwells had already bought some cows from the family that sold them the ranch in 2016. “So we just started piddling and playing with it,” says Stephanie. “And it really evolved from there.” And after meeting Johnson, Kevin passionately pursued information on safe, sustainable farming; ravenously putting pieces together from online sources, movies, and books, some suggested to him by Johnson. “We started rotating the grazing of our cows and stopped using all fertilizers and chemicals. And we did some cover-cropping,” says Kevin, explaining that cover-cropping is the process of planting a mixture of native plants, including some that most people would call weeds, in the middle of their hay fields. The different root systems of the plants work together to naturally pump nutrients like nitrogen into the ground through the photosynthetic process. “It’s ridiculous that we add nitrogen fertilizer to the soil when it makes up 78% of our air,” laughs Kevin. He explains that nitrogen fertilizer was added to farming during World War II, the beginning of the end for American soil. “We don’t have these natural cycles anymore unless we rebuild them.” The Maxwells found that their water cycles reactivated as they rebuilt their soil, strengthening

their resistance to drought, a serious issue for any Texas farmer. The roots of the native plants aggregate the soil; breaking up the rock-hard pan it has become. Today, the infiltration system in Kevin’s soil recharges the natural aquifers, which he hopes will allow his soils to absorb 10 inches of water in a single minute when fully regenerated. “And our recent experience, after only four years of doing this and during the worst drought most people can remember, showed we are on the right track,” says Kevin. He explains that their herd continued to graze on green grass throughout the recent drought while other farmers struggled with dried-up pastures. “The farmers who have been doing regenerative farming longer than I believe most of our droughts are man-made, a direct result of the destruction of the natural water cycle.” Despite the Maxwell family's journey into regenerative farming, they harbor no ill will towards their more traditional neighbors. “If I’m a generational farmer and I do the same things that allowed my father and his

father to succeed in farming, why would I change how I’m doing things?” Empathizes Kevin. He humbly asserts that he’s ‘no expert,’ but still, he wishes to spread the word about what he and his family are building. “A lot of times when you tell people a new way of doing things, they think you’re saying they’re doing something wrong,’ says Kevin. “But it’s not a new way of doing things, it is the oldest way there is. And we call our farm Fingerprint Farms because when we look at a natural system, we believe we are looking at the fingerprints of God.” And for the Maxwells, the longer they practiced gentle farming, the more it became a symbol of accepting God’s will. A return to the natural order. "At the end of the day, people need to know their farmers," concludes Kevin. "Ours is a different kind of product. It's up to people to decide if we have what they need." To get your pasture raised beef and chicken and to learn more about regenerative farming visit fingerprint-farms.com.

VAL E NT INE S DAY IN Create lasting memories this Valentines Day at home with traditions new and old..

SWEET TREAT TABLE Surprise your children with a sweet treat table. Keep it simple with a few favorite snacks and candies, or for a more extravagant display, use fresh flowers and create a handmade centerpiece. To achieve this look, start by placing the largest greenery on the bottom layer in a circle around the table. Next layer varying types of greenery on top of the first layer in shorter widths to achieve the final look. Next, add Valentine’s Day mini cupcakes, chocolate-dipped Oreos and Valentine’s Day cookies for an inviting sweet treat table.
VALENTINE'S TREE To create this easy and eye-catching centerpiece, collect fallen branches and paint them white. We used a thrifted, repurposed white ceramic jar to assemble the branches in for the base. Use a floral foam to stabilize the branches, and place moss at the top of the jar. You can use this homemade tree for any occasion as it’s sturdy, and just about anything can be hung on it.
VALENTINE’S DAY ORNAMENTS Create heart ornaments to hang on your Valentine's Tree Centerpiece. These ornaments can be used as clue cards for a kid's Valentine's Day scavenger hunt. Instruct children to find their picture on the tree and hunt for the hidden treasure in the house. We used recycled shipping boxes to create the heart base and painted them red. We then used a hole punch to create a lace-like edge to complete the look.
ROMANTIC DINNER FOR 2: THE ADULT TABLE For this look, we decided to set the table in a non-traditional casual setting—the coffee table in

the living room. Layer pillows and cozy blankets on the ground for comfortable seating. We used two layers of fabric for the runner and added a handmade floral arrangement as the centerpiece. To achieve this look, use a two-layer serving tray and layer flowers and stems to adorn the tray. Add grapes or berries to give a fuller and textured look. For a romantic ambiance, add candle sticks, a bottle of wine and Billie Holiday playing in the background. For a no-hassle dinner, order out and serve your favorite takeout in the comfort of your own home. Or if you like to cook together, try this go-to pasta recipe perfect for a Valentines Day in.
