Summer Adventure!

July 2022 PUBLISHER

Hunter Martinez | hunter.martinez@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Hannah Barricks | hannah.barricks@citylifestyle.com

Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the happenings around our city this summer and ways to get out and explore together. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on a local veteran in our community and to thank him for his service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at West Fort Worth Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our city offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

Get Together and Give Back!

Beat the heat with your family this summer with these cool charities The end of the school year for families across the Fort Worth area signals the transition from tests and quizzes to, decidedly more fun, summer camps and trips! As we encourage our youth to explore the outdoors and spend time with friends and loved ones, might we also consider giving back this year. Familyfriendly charities across Cowtown shine in the heat of the summer months, capitalizing on the extra help that a school-free calendar brings; a symbiosis also necessary for families as parents search for creative ways to fill up the days of their newly idle children, all hopeful to elude the trap of daily television and video games. And what better prescription for the monotony of video games than servicing your community in the wide outdoors? This summer, work together with your family building lasting memories and a better community!

HONORING A LOCAL VETERAN ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHANTELLE MARIE

AN ARMY VETERAN TAKES US DOWN MEMORY LANE.

“I was fortunate to not be in combat,” explains Don Coulson, formerly of the United States Army, “I was one of the lucky ones.” A lot of Coulson’s friends weren't so lucky, he explains, “they're the ones who deserve all the recognition.” He emphasizes his point with a solemn tone of voice, Mr. Coulson is a humble man, even-tempered and thoughtful with his words. Coulson joined the army at just 24 years old, something he had very little choice in as he was part of the draft. “I used to be a teacher, I taught high school football and baseball… but they just pulled us all into the conflict.”

WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? Different. Back during that time, the draft meant every young man had to sign up and there was a lottery system, but if you were physically able, you went into the military draft. If you were a teacher or a student, you used to be able to get a deferment from the draft, but they did away with all teaching and student departments as a means to get as many able-bodied young men as possible. And back then, being drafted was a one-way ticket to Vietnam, I was very fortunate to be sent to Korea instead of Vietnam.

WHAT WERE YOUR DUTIES WHILE YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE? After they sent me to Korea, I, along with four other enlisted personnel, was in charge of 24 officer’s clubs. My job was to clean and repair slot machines, keep them

18

H OM E TOWN H E R O | L IFE + CULTURE

well stocked, and see to the entertainment. We were so close to North Korea that you could wave to the marching soldiers. All of the waitresses and managers of the clubs were Korean. We also had a Korean driver, a large part of what we did was club auditing. I think a part of why we were chosen for this job was because we all had college degrees.

WHO ARE YOUR HEROES? I very much would like to see David Cook get more of the spotlight. He served the entirety of his military career as chief navigator of Air Force One for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, he was right there with those great men in that era. Also, in Korea there was the MASH unit, which stands for “mobile army surgical hospital;” those men and the doctors that were flown in on helicopters were instrumental in saving a lot of lives, they were true heroes. Truly, you would be fortunate to hear the stories of any Vietnam, Korean or WWII veterans, or a WWI veteran if you are really lucky. And we can’t forget the younger guys, those that came after me. It’s about honoring those that have passed. A lot of my friends that I went into service with never returned home, those are the heroes, those are the men we need to continue honoring and telling their stories.

AT H LE T E LIF E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.

ARTICLE EMILY SHEA

More often than not, traveling means a pretty drastic change in your day-to-day routine. It affects everything from your diet and exercise regiment to what time you go to bed and wake up. Although the trade off of traveling to a new and exciting city or your favorite beach destination is typically worth the change in routine, traveling doesn’t mean all of your healthy daily habits must be abandoned. I get it – vacation for most of us is all about relaxation. Relaxing on the beaches of Hawaii with an ice cold piña colada in my hand is much more enticing than hitting the gym for a workout. And let’s face it – healthy options like gym accessibility and nutrient-rich menu items aren’t always available. But traveling doesn’t necessarily have to be unhealthy. It also doesn’t have to be as intense as making a commitment to hitting the gym for three hours everyday and eating steamed broccoli for dinner each night. If you make a conscious effort, you can always find ways to stay active and eat nutritiously on vacation. However, it certainly helps to stay somewhere that promotes your wellbeing by offering active programs, a fitness facility, healthy dining options and spa services. And while it is difficult to find a place that offers all of those things, it is not impossible. In fact, Hotel Galomar, located on the small Portuguese island of Madeira (yes, as in Madeira wine), has all that and more. Located along the beautiful southeast coast of Madeira and within the Galo Resort, Hotel Galomar is an adults only hotel that has a unique cliff-edge location, a sea water outdoor pool, a lounge and bar, a spa and an on-site restaurant. It is also walking distance to the resort’s two additional restaurants and the large gym with free weights, vast cardio equipment options, benches and barbells, weight machines and 70 weekly

exercise classes – all available for no additional cost. Hotel Galomar also offers active outdoor excursions such as mountain biking, hiking and canyoning through the outdoor company LokoLoko Madeira. The resort’s state-of-the-art gym is home to more than just your everyday treadmill and generic set of dumbbells. There are over a dozen indoor cycling bikes, ellipticals and treadmills, as well as a weights area with a large selection of dumbbells, kettlebells and weight machines, a CrossFit room, a yoga and meditation room, squash courts, a heated indoor pool and a sauna. Hotel Galomar’s on-site restaurant, Restaurante Atlantis, offers a daily breakfast buffet with options ranging from tropical fruits, a selection of fresh bread and pastries, smoked salmon, egg dishes and more. In the evening, Restaurante Atlantis transforms into an upscale grill that specializes in nutritious seafood and fish dishes. One of the other dining options located within the resort is Restaurante Ondamar. Similar to Restaurante Atlantis, it also offers a daily breakfast buffet. Each evening Restaurante Ondamar also offers a house buffet. With daily themes and a vast selection of gluten free, vegetarian and organic food options, the house buffet provides numerous nutritious options and can whet just about anyone’s appetite. If exploring the unique culture of Madeira strikes your interest, Hotel Galomar is steps away from a local bus stop. For less than $5, you can purchase a round trip ticket to Madeira’s capital city of Funchal. Another option is to have the hotel’s front desk staff call you a local taxi, which will cost you a bit more. Renting a car in Madeira is also an option, but the roads are extremely steep and windy, making driving quite a challenge if you’re not a local. Funchal is a cosmopolitan city well known for its natural beauty, cable cars and upscale restaurants. The city overlooks the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is backdropped by the island’s luscious green mountains. The best views of the city can be experienced from the Madeira Cable Car, also known as the Teleférico do Funchal. It starts in Funchal’s Old Town and travels over 10,000 feet to Monte, one of the most historical areas of Funchal. Funchal is also home to the Funchal Ecological Park. The park offers multiple hiking trails, trails for mountain biking and all-terrain biking, bird watching experiences, canyoning and more.
