Here's to the Men!

An inspirational man has the incredible ability and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. Hands down, my Father was and is the most inspirational and influential male role model in my life. He is one the best (if not the best) people I have ever met. One of the great attributes of my Dad is that he leads by example. Growing up and trying to be like him, I have learned several things. Among these things is the importance of sharing my faith, that striving to be an individual of integrity is one of the best attributes a person can have, and that no matter how bad things get you are never out of the fight. I could write books on the positive impact my father has had on so many lives around him. The way I see it, if I can make a quarter of the impact he has, I will have lived an amazing life. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

When you step into the Cleburne Railroaders stadium, you’ll get all the nostalgia that comes with entering a ballpark: the smell of popcorn, the excitement of the fans, the music, the mascots getting everyone ready for the game, and the baseball diamond shining under the lights. What you won’t see is an overcrowded stadium, nosebleed seats, and parents wondering what to do with kids who might not want to stay seated for nine innings. “Some fans say coming to a game is like taking a nine-inning vacation,” says Railroader President and Co-Owner John Junker. There’s a rich history behind the Cleburne Railroaders, and it all started in the early 1900s. The team won the Texas League Championship in 1906 and won the TexasOaklahoma Championship in 1911; the banners still hang in the Classic Club, the sports grill located on the second level. One of their earliest players was Tris Speaker, considered to be one of the greatest center fielders of all time. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937 after moving to the major leagues, and after retirement, he had a long and successful career as an MLB coach. Although the team left the area for some years, the Mayor and leadership of Cleburne had the vision to bring them back; 2017 was the inaugural season that ushered in a new era for the Cleburne Railroaders. With seats for 3,000, the community-built stadium allows fans to watch a baseball game in a very intimate setting. “When a fan comes in, they’re going to watch high-level baseball. A lot of our players have either played major ball or are on the way up. In the past season or two, six players signed with major league teams. What makes our games even more special is the crowd energy and fan experiences.” says Junker.

What type of fan experiences? The list is long and exciting. Think in-between inning games like tractor races, limbo contests, sing-alongs and even blow-up musical chairs. Kevin the Konductor gets the crowd going, and Spike and Dandy, the original mascots, engage with the fans. There are themed nights like Friday night fireworks, Saturday night tunes, and Teammate Thursdays. Autographs are given out before and after the game. On certain nights, kids can run the bases, and there’s even a full basketball court sponsored by the Dallas Mavericks. Located behind the right field, kids can head for the court, and parents can still see them from anywhere in the ballpark. Even better, the entire field is protected by nets, all the way to the foul poles, so kids can run and play on the court or berms while parents kick back and enjoy the game. Fans are given Home Depot buckets so they can join the “Bucket Brigade.” With tons of engagement from players and mascots and enthusiastic broadcasters, the Cleburne Railroaders claim to have the rowdiest fans in the league, which not only brings up the energy for everyone in attendance but the players as well.
10
O UR TOWN | ENTERTA INME NT
There are season ticket holders, but there are plenty of first-timers attending too, and that’s a big reason why the organization tries to do something different every night. “We treat every night like opening night. We’re huge on making first impressions,” says Junker. The food makes a game even more exciting. Not only can you choose from standard fare like hotdogs, popcorn, pizza and snow cones, but be sure to look for the specialty booths. That’s where you’ll find cotton candy and a selection of sweets, and in the specialty booth sponsored by La Maderna, you’ll find street tacos, the Triple Play (a pork sandwich), brisket or jalapeno mac ‘n’ cheese, elote, tamales, quesadillas and more. In the suites on the second floor, and at the Classic Club, you’ll find things like shrimp kabobs and tenderloin. From all the entertainment to the great seats and unique food options, a Cleburne Railroaders game is a truly unforgettable summertime experience for the whole family. You’ll get to enjoy America’s pastime without the crowds, and you’ll be a part of something that brings the whole community together. See the schedule and buy tickets at ilovebaseball.com.

FORT WORTH’S BEST BUSINESSMEN PAIRED WITH DON ARTEMIO’S BEST DRINKS. FIND OUT THEIR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS. ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHANELLE MARIE
There are certain guidelines for making a good cocktail. One part this or that, a garnish here or there and maybe a mix or muddle. Most importantly - is it shaken or stirred? When a recipe is concocted just right a perfect cocktail is the result. The steps of a recipe relate to the business world. With each step and process meticulously done right, it results in a success story. Take it from seven prominent Fort Worth businessmen who enlightened us on what their recipe is for success.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? For me, success is a balanced happiness in my relationships with God, my wife, son, family, friends and business partners. I have carved out a home in Fort Worth for my family by first struggling, but ultimately being successful, in my banking career for the last 25 years. The struggles I faced were the building blocks of my success.
WHAT’S YOUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS? I succeed by enthusiastically living in the moment while knowing that overcoming failure, trouble and fear is part of the journey.

Success is a moving target as our goals and priorities change over time. There is a huge difference between how I perceived success as a young adult as compared to how I perceive success as a husband, father, and business owner. For me today, it’s about a sense of pride in creating value for others. I experience success by being able to provide for my family and by helping my clients achieve their financial goals.

I believe that one element of success is built by establishing genuine relationships based on integrity and respect, which allows for a foundation of trust and open communication. Equally important is keeping your commitments and treating others needs as if they were your own. I think this holds true at home, socially and in business. If these elements are in place, you have a shared investment in mutual success. CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/WE STF O RT WO RT H

Walters Insurance Services, LLC, Owner Favorite Drink: Crown and Coke
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? My two domains of success are professional and personal. Being fulfilled, happy, safe, healthy and loved are the picture of personal success. To me, Ralph Waldo Emerson describes overall success best, “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is success.”
WHAT’S YOUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS? My recipe for success is first and foremost providing great service. To be willing to listen carefully and to teach and be taught. Ultimately, success is based on values, perseverance, passion and building relationships. It is extremely important to treat people with respect, integrity and honesty; continuously striving to improve in all those areas.

Gavrel Furs, Owner Favorite Drink: Hibiscus Tea HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? Success to me is defined by the people around me: my employees, my customers, and those whom I deal with in business feel that I give them my best. This includes being personable, caring, and serving with excellence in every aspect of my business. Providing high quality products and customer service is the foundation my business has been built upon.
WHAT IS YOUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS? In the early days of my business, I took the time and effort to learn everything there is to learn about being a furrier. I studied fur types and quality, fur care and cleaning, restyling and complete garment manufacturing. I also decided early on to run my business as the family business that it has always been, which means my customers will be treated as family and friends. We have no snooty employees to disrespect you. Only friendly and helpful staff.
Dion Lampe
TotalCare ER, Senior Director of Community Liaisons Favorite Drink: El Cocktail del Pueblo HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? To me, success isn’t defined by who you are as a person, it’s how you grow as a person. That means that you live each moment to the maximum with a positive attitude, smile and genuinely enjoy life. Success is about having the ability to have financial stability and a healthy work/personal balance. For me, a strong relationship with God is a must; it took time for me to understand that you never stop growing — in your family life, in your professional life, and, most importantly, your spiritual life.
WHAT’S YOUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS? I think the recipe for success is to never stop growing. During times of prosperity and times of struggle, the most successful people always find a way to grow and learn new ways of living out their personal values. Nobody is perfect and everyone has aspects of their life they would like to be better at. So, the true measure of success is how much you can recognize those opportunities and find ways to grow — grow yourself and those around you. I also think that success follows those who have built trusting relationships, because they have connected with people and built a name that others will know in a positive way. Luis Rodriguez
The Exercise Coach, Owner Favorite Drink: Sand Point Pinot Noir HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? There is personal success and professional success, for me. As I look at it, health and financial stability and family and friends define my success; if you don’t have those things, it’s difficult to say you have succeeded. Ultimately, I would define success as: “what are you contributing to the people and things around you, and how are you making your community better?” If you can say that you are making your community better, you’re successful.
WHAT’S YOUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS? Being from the Army, I have principles that I order my life by and that has ultimately defined my success. I also try to work smart. When you put perseverance, dedication, passion, a love of others and the customer all together, the money takes care of itself. And of course, come to the exercise coach! With my business, I also surround myself with employees of high moral character. When I hire someone, I look for integrity, intelligence, intellectual curiosity and loyalty. Having the right people around you and not being afraid to simply take a chance every once in a while always helps, sometimes it pays to be a rebel.
Dennis Kelley
VIP Total Health and Hydration, President/Owner Favorite Drink: Old Fashion
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? Success sounds easy to define on the surface as most people tie it to their ability to make money. While making money is important, for me, it is only a very small element to consider. I have people that depend on our company for solutions to health concerns. I also have employees that depend on a paycheck for their families. My success is defined by my ability to satisfy all the complex needs of others while earning a living for my own family! Taking care of people is success!
WHAT’S YOUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS? Being humble and willing to admit there are things you just don’t know is my recipe for success. I rely on data and the people I surround myself with to make the best possible decisions. Working as a team, we develop high quality, effective solutions for the health and wellness needs of our clientele. Our team believes in delivering these solutions with a client-first approach. We ensure that we deliver top tier service always!

American Beauty Nostalgia and artistry collide in the restoration of a 1955 Studebaker truck. There’s something intoxicating about nostalgia. As we get older and our lives become more and more complicated, it seems that we reach endlessly towards the rosiness of the past, remembering it fondly and craving its simplicity. Classic car restoration encapsulates the warm comfortability of the past with the beauty of American ingenuity, an irresistible combination. For Smitty’s Classics and Cars of Fort Worth, not only is classic car restoration a labor of love, it’s also a family affair. Smitty’s owner, Darrel Smith, learned to fix cars from his father, as well as mechanical school, and he explains how fixing cars was something that the men in their family were always careful to pass down generationally, initially out of necessity but today it’s a lucrative business. And the cars Smitty’s restores often seem to have family ties that run deep. Smith’s most recent restoration, a gorgeous ice blue 1955 Studebaker truck, initially belonged to the truck owners’ grandfather who bought it new. For twenty years the truck sat, accumulating rust and losing a bit of its luster, a time capsule waiting to be restored to its former glory, a task Smith and his team were all too eager to accommodate.

4. BODY
The Car's engine was converted to a 283 motor with a 350 turbo transmission. Originally, the car came with a 6-cylinder motor but Smitty's updated it to give it some extra zip.
Smitty's kept the body of the truck all original, only removing the rust that had accumulated over 20 years of being out of commission. The iconic bubbly body of the Studebaker was then given several coats of ice blue paint as the finishing touch.
2. REAR END Smitty's fitted the truck with a '70 Camaro rear end differential for a ride that's as smooth as possible.
3. SUSPENSION Similar to the differential, Smitty's added front end suspension, considerably improving the smoothness of the ride. The original truck did not have front end suspension.
5. STEERING AND BRAKES Power steering and power brakes were added to the truck, a modern amenity that greatly improves the quality of the drive. Smith also added a tilt steering wheel column, giving the driver increased wheel control.
6. UPDATED WIRING The electrical on the truck was updated to today's standards, modernizing it greatly.

COUSI N’S BA R-B-Q TIPS FOR M A K I NG THE PER FECT BR ISK ET
Texas is known for producing some of the best BBQ in the world. With this being the case, it has almost become a right of passage as a Texan to be able to smoke a perfect brisket - one with an ideal bark, a thick smoke ring, and as moist as can be. Setting out to do this, however, is no easy task. In an effort to help us all produce a Texasworthy brisket, the fine people at Cousin’s Bar-B-Q have shared some steps that will help you become the best pitmaster on the block.

H OW TO | FOOD + BEVER AGE
• We recommend starting with the highest quality meat available. You can even buy a raw Prime brisket in the Cousins fresh meat markets. • Fat helps retain moisture and protects your brisket for the long cook, so trim to about 1/4 inch fat coverage to yield the best sliced brisket. Be sure to keep everything smooth and curvy. Leaving sharp edges will get crispy and burn up in the cook. • Season with your favorite rub. • Set your cooker to 225-250, and get ready for the long haul. • Your cook will take many hours, but it’s ready when you can insert a probe or thermometer without any resistance. • Wrap in butcher paper and rest until 140 degrees. Hold in Yeti or set the oven at 140 until ready to eat. For more on BBQ follow them on Instagram @cousinstxbbq.
