Home is Where the Heart Is
Welcome to the much-anticipated annual “Homes” issue–our ode to the extraordinary spaces we call home. We've curated a collection of stories focused on a wide range of home-related topics, from building a dream home theater to a nonprofit that provides housing for out-of-town families using our local children’s hospital. This issue has it all.
A home is much more than just a place to eat and sleep. Most people have a powerful, emotional connection to their dwelling–which is why the phrase “home is where the heart is” is such a popular saying.
My favorite room in our home is our family room. Almost every part of our house is connected to this open space, so it truly is the family gathering area for our home. It’s where we come together to spend quality time together, but also relax and unwind after a long day to watch TV or do a puzzle. I like this space so much that when I did a makeover to our family room a few years ago, the transformation ended up being the cover story for our 2021 “Homes” issue.
I asked each of my family members to share which room in our house is their favorite and why. I was surprised to learn that everyone had a different answer, but their reasons for picking each room were very similar. They all chose the room where they had the most creative influence over the items and decor for that space, so it’s the room where they feel most at home. I encourage you to do this same exercise with your family, then give each person a little creative freedom over the design elements in their favorite room.
We hope that our “Homes” issue will be your guide to a celebration of the spaces that make our hearts feel at home.
Happy reading!

Advances in audiovisual technology indoors and outdoors are exciting, enticing and even life-changing. If you are technology-challenged and feel intimidated to explore the addition of a home theater, home automation, landscape audio or a security system, meet Jeramy Coffee, owner of AVtech Limited. Jeramy’s local technology business stands out from competitors because of its extensive training and quick responsiveness, which is not always the norm in the industry. But customer comfort and ease of use is one of AVtech’s top goals.
“The biggest thing is education,” Jeramy says. “I want my customers to know exactly what equipment is going into their house. Also, we want to make sure you know how to use it.” He continues, “We go above and beyond with customer service. If someone has a question, I have no problem answering the call on evenings and weekends.”

In 2006, AVtech Limited started as a company that primarily focused on the customized installation of TVs on stone and brick fireplace mantles. Nearly 20 years later, AVtech has evolved into a competitive AV company specializing in whole-home audio, custom home theaters, security systems, networking and wiring, smart home systems, outdoor lighting, TV hangs and more.
Despite AVtech’s growth and the team’s busy schedule, Jeramy maintains a small business that allows him to be involved in all of AVtech’s jobs. He works alongside his main technician, Shea Garbutt, and his wife, Tara Bolton, who supports the business. This trusted trio keeps costs affordable and offers personal customer service.
AVtech provides a wide array of services. While they enjoy elaborate projects, the foundation of their business continues to be custom fireplace TV hangs. They work with home and business owners to meet their budget needs.
“There is such a big price range,” Tara says. “A home theater doesn’t have to be an expensive project; you can do it much more affordably than you might think.”

Home theaters are a popular staple, but Avtech sees many new trends:
• Anti-Glare Indoor/Outdoor TVs—AVtech installs Samsung’s The Frame TVs, allowing you to change the frame color and choose artwork or a logo when the TV is off.
• Outdoor Home Entertainment—The demand is growing for outdoor music, televisions and landscape audio, including speakers that look like solar lights.
• Bathroom Mirror TV—Televisions are installed behind a mirror. Watch a show while getting ready for the day!
• Automation—AVtech installs a single pad that runs televisions, heat, music, lights and even window shades. With automation, you can start small and add on.
• One of Jeramy’s favorite indoor projects was a 150-inch home theater with a starlight ceiling run through automation.
“We basically did the whole room: color, carpet, chairs, room layout and all the equipment,” says Jeramy. “The starlight ceiling looks like stars at night. There are different settings: twilight, shooting stars. It’s really cool.”
Jeramy is constantly testing new products to ensure customers have the option to get the most up-to-date technology. AVtech is an authorized dealer for some of the biggest AV manufacturers in the industry.
“I’m not going to offer equipment to customers until I know it works and it’s easy to use because if it’s hard to use for me, it’s going to be hard for a customer,” he says.
The word is out about AVtech Limited. Ninetyfive percent of their business comes from referrals. Customers often invite Jeramy to bring potential clients to their homes to showcase their finished work. AVtech enjoys lifelong customers they work with repeatedly for upgrades or new projects.
AVtech works directly with homeowners, as well as with local pool, landscape and basement renovation companies. Jeramy meets with all potential customers to find out what products, designs and services they seek. They take pride in customizing every job to suit the customers’ needs through stages of design, equipment selection, installation and education.
AVtech’s service area extends from Columbus to Northern Kentucky. In addition to private homes, they also service businesses, including car dealerships, restaurants, bars and churches. AVtech recently installed outdoor televisions on the patios of Prime Cincinnati, Downtown; Primo Italian Steakhouse, Middletown; and Streetside Brewery, Columbia Tusculum.

SMOOTH AS GLASS
Refresh + Renew with Glass Guru
ARTICLE BY JONATHAN STOUT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Glass Guru in Mason is an excellent local resource for glass repair, replacement and custom projects. A full-service glass company, they install the highest quality, namebrand replacement glass products.
“I started The Glass Guru because I enjoy helping our community and wanted to build something that would allow my family more freedom,” says local franchise owner Lisa Chambers.
Their certified technicians provide a number of specialty services that aren’t offered by most other glass shops.
“What sets us apart from others is we give free estimates, we are knowledgeable and give prompt service,” Chambers explains. “We are pretty friendly, too.”
Glass Guru handles much more than just windows. They also specialize in replacement glass, showers, doors, tabletops, shelves, screens and more. Mirror and pet door installation have become very popular projects within the last two years.
“We have been installing mirrors for home gyms a lot since COVID,” Chambers says. “The benefit of a custom mirror is that you have a mirror that fits your space perfectly.” Beyond installation, they can also refresh damaged mirrors by cutting them down or adding a frame of the client’s choosing.
“We can take a mirror that has damaged spots on the edges and put a custom frame around it to give it a new look,” Chambers describes.
As people are increasingly working from home, pet doors have become an easy option for pet owners to allow their pets to go in and out on their own, without having to step away from their work.
“For pet doors, we measure the glass and the size of the pet to determine what size door you need,” Chambers explains. “They’re nice because they allow your pet to enjoy both indoors and outdoors freely.”

THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR
Priscilla’s Place is a Rental Home with History + Heart
MUST SEE | HOME + DESIGN 24
If the walls of a 1901 rental home in Olde West Chester could talk, they would tell a touching tale of neighbors and a legacy of welcome that lives on in its spacious rooms. The historic blue two-story is the house next door to Tonia Wheeler’s business with her husband Josh, The Fetchington Luxury Pet Hotel. As they built their business, they also built a relationship with Priscilla, their lovely next-door neighbor.
“Priscilla reminded me so much of my grandma,” Wheeler explains. “We just had an immediate connection. We bonded. I made sure to look after her, take her meals and visit her weekly.”
When Priscilla passed away, the Wheelers bought and lovingly restored the home to its original glory. They made the decision to turn the property into a homey Airbnb and named it Priscilla’s Place.
“We wanted to pay homage to Priscilla and honor her by bringing her house back to life, the way that I know she would be so proud of it,” says Wheeler.

After renovating The Fetchington, the Wheelers were seasoned experts at rehabbing century-old dwellings. The fondness Tonia holds for the home is evident in how she speaks of it as a human.
“We took possession of it in January 2023 and spent a few months polishing her up,” she shares. “We even had to prop up her front porch. That front porch is just amazing.”
Guests rave about the personal touches at Priscilla’s Place. The home features historic details like original wood floors, porcelain door knobs and leaded windows, balanced by modern amenities
like a mini-fridge in the primary bedroom, smart televisions and comfortable furniture. Wheeler clearly pictured a variety of uses as she designed it.
“I wanted this big table in the kitchen where people could gather and catch up with family that they haven't seen in a while if they're using it for a graduation, wedding or funeral,” she says.
As animal lovers, the Wheelers welcome pets at Priscilla’s Place.
“We knew we wanted it to be pet-friendly, just because that's who we are. We love dogs and we would want to bring our own dog,” Wheeler says.

BOLD + BRAVE KID’S FOUNDATION BRINGS HOPE TO CANCER FAMILIES
30
In the heart of Liberty Township, the Bold + Brave Kid’s Foundation stands as a pillar of support for families navigating the challenging journey of childhood cancer, particularly those undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital Proton Therapy Center. Established by Executive Director April Montgomery to provide housing during treatment, the nonprofit’s roots trace back to a personal and triumphant story.
Fifteen years ago, Montgomery’s infant daughter, Claire, faced a rare challenge—tongue cancer.
“It’s difficult to treat cancers in some areas due to radiation damaging surrounding tissues,” Montgomery shares, “and that was the situation Claire was in. There was only one hospital in the world that would treat children like Claire back then and that was Mass General.”
Montgomery and her daughter traveled to Massachusetts for targeted proton therapy known as "pencil beam," a precision-focused treatment hitting only the tumor area.
Having experienced the hardships of relocating for her daughter's treatments, Montgomery understands the impact of compassionate support.
"I took a shuttle to the hospital for forty minutes daily, and it was so depressing," Montgomery explains.
However, a timely break, an apartment donated by a fellow cancer patient, changed her life.
“Claire and I stayed in that apartment for two months,” she adds, “and I never forgot that break.”
In 2016, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital opened a new state-of-the-art Proton Therapy Center here in Liberty Township.

“Today, Cincinnati Children’s ranks number one in the nation among Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and number one for pediatric cancer care,” says Barrett Brunsman, a senior consultant in media relations at the hospital. “Both kids and adults receive care at the Proton Therapy Center,” he continues, “which treats more than 30 types of cancer.”
When Montgomery learned there would be a local center that treated patients like her daughter, she and a colleague from Cincinnati were spurred into action.
Since more than 65% of patients come from 150-plus miles away, “It made sense for us to do something here to provide housing,” she says.
Thus The Bold + Brave Kid’s Foundation was born. The nonprofit organization collaborates with social workers at Children’s Hospital, offering housing in twelve private apartments situated within walking distance from the proton center. The emphasis on single-space units is crucial, considering the immunocompromised patients. These fully furnished dwellings, funded solely by donations, provide a home away from home for families and patients who average thirty treatments over a four-to-six-week period.
Each unit is designed to cater to the needs of the families.
"The main bedroom has a Queen-sized bed and an ensuite shower that’s ADA compliant and handicap accessible,” Montgomery says. “Additionally [in a
separate bedroom], there are two twin-sized beds with convenient access to a hallway full bath.”
All units also come complete with high-speed Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen and a full-sized laundry.
A mother of one patient shares her family’s story.
"Our son is 10 and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We live in Columbus and underwent chemotherapy and surgery there but were a part of a study that called for proton radiation therapy. We were fortunate enough to lease an apartment through the Bold + Brave Kid’s Foundation…and [it] made our lives so much less stressful! The ability to leave our belongings at a secure place when we traveled back and forth simplified our lives.”
Community engagement plays a vital role in the foundation’s success. Students at Lakota East High School’s Hawks Against Cancer Club actively contribute by going above and beyond monetary aid. These students are the driving force behind heartfelt gestures, organizing special birthday cakes and engaging activities tailored for the younger patients. The Lakota Family YMCA also provides families with a free family pass to their facility during their stay, and supporters such as Valley Central Bank play a pivotal role with monetary support, too.
Bold + Brave Kid’s Foundation and our exceptional local hospitals help make Liberty Township a center for healing and growing. Support Bold + Brave Kid’s Foundation with monetary donations, gift cards or by purchasing items from a Target or Amazon wish list. BoldAndBraveKids.org

nesses unite under one gabled roof to eliminate stress and handle title and legal situations with collaboration and confidence.
Just off the Eagleridge roundabout in West Chester, you’ll find the shared office with an exterior that resembles a picturesque home, its wide porch extending a warm welcome. The 7,000-square-foot space supports the mission of the two companies that share it: to provide excellent title and legal services, elevating the experience for clients at an affordable price. When they opened the doors to the new office in 2020, they relocated from Beckett Office Center where they started in a 480-square-foot office space.
Prodigy’s lobby is anchored by a towering fireplace. It is warm and inviting, a greeting echoed in the genuine spirit of Nick Perrino, president and lead attorney for Prodigy Title Agency. Perrino leads an experienced team of 18 to pave the way for closings, the final step of real estate
people and make them more comfortable with the process. We want to make it a celebratory moment instead of a dreaded one.”
Clients gather around important documents in one of two spacious conference rooms that flank the lobby. The high ceilings and flood of natural light create a peaceful setting in which to conduct business.
Upstairs, behind the second-floor dormers, you’ll find the office of Partner and Attorney Kenneth Daly. Daly is a Lakota East High School, Ohio University and University of Cincinnati Law School alumnus and has been named a National Trial Lawyers “Top 40 Under 40” for civil litigation. His office offers an intimate conference space for private meetings. Daly partnered with Perrino in April 2023 to found Perrino and Daly Law.
Perrino has known Daly since he was a neighborhood kid and family friend.
“I was extremely excited to come onboard,” says Daly.

Now the partners wrestle with the needs of their clients.
“We’ve grown and added services as the community needs have changed,” says Perrino.
“The purchase or sale of real estate often triggers a range of legal needs and desires with which our office is wellequipped to assist. We routinely aid clients with contract drafting, review and negotiations, estate planning, creating LLCs, resolving title issues and ownership disputes and much more,” Daly adds.
The hub of the office is the main floor’s open-concept office space, affectionately known as “The Pit.” There are a lot of moving parts in play before a real estate transaction comes across the finish line. The design of this area allows for collaboration between team members who are working together toward each closing. If qualifications are met each monthly qualification cycle: (1) Balances up to $15,000 receive APY of 4.00%; and (2) balances over $15,000 earn 0.15% dividend rate on portion of balance over $15,000, resulting in 4.00% - 0.15% APY depending on the balance. If qualifications are not met, all balances earn 0.05% APY. Qualifying transactions must post and settle to the account during the monthly qualification cycle. Transactions may take one or more banking days from the date transaction was made to post and settle to the account. ATM-processed transactions do not count towards qualifying debit card transactions. “Monthly Qualification Cycle” means a period beginning one day prior to the first day of the current statement cycle through one day prior to the close of the current statement cycle. For example, if it is the month of March, there are 31 days in the month, therefore all your debit card transactions must clear and post by the close of business on March 30th. Items clearing and posting on March 31st will count toward your April debit card transaction count for qualification purposes. Transfers between accounts do not count as qualifying transactions. Fees may reduce earnings. Limit one account per SSN. Scan For Details and Qualifications 38
“WE’RE HERE TO
checking everything along the way,” says Perrino. “We’ve found incredible success rates with this. We’re able to catch and solve issues early, work ahead of schedule and ultimately provide smooth closings for everyone involved.”
An oversized Connect Four game, stocked kitchen and entertaining patio at the back of the building show the playful side of the close-knit team that enjoys working and playing together. Most of the staff has been with the company for more than a decade.
Perrino and his wife Pam have been devoted to the West Chester community since they purchased their first home here in 1992, raising two sons and building a business here, an integral part of the exponential growth of the area—all bringing much joy and pride.
“This is our home and we have grown with and will continue to support it in the future,” Perrino says. “We’re here to stay.”

FINDING A TOUCH OF GLAM IN EVERYDAY DESIGN
ARTICLE BY ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
DECOR TRENDS | HOME + DESIGN 40
HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.
Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”
“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”
This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.
When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.
“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.
In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.
“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.
To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas

and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.
Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.
Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.
MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT
Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?
HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS:
Find a base color with pops of other colors.
“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”
If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.
Consider wallpaper.
“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.
Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.
Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.
