LIFESTYLE LETTER
Starting Strong
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Michelle Moody | Michelle.Moody@CityLifestyle.com
Whether or not you like to set New Year's resolutions, January is still a great time for goal setting. A fresh year is a great time to reflect on the past and think about positive, sustainable changes to make in the year ahead. The most popular resolutions focus on getting healthier physically, mentally and emotionally. That's why West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle dedicates our January issue to health + wellness - to help our readers get a strong start to 2024. My family and friends know that I am a total type "A" personality. In many areas of life, I have a list of goals along with a spreadsheet for tracking my progress. In 2020, I started applying this goal-focused approach to fitness. I set very specific goals for how many sit-ups I wanted to do and how many steps I hoped to take for the year. I tracked my step tallies (thanks Fitbit for making that easier) and counted every single crunch. I hit those targets, so I increased them a little for 2021 and added new goals for squats and weightlifting. Once I hit those, I added a few more the following year, and on and on it went, each year adding a few more healthy habits. My annual goals were divided evenly by month, then taken week by week to make them feel smaller and more attainable. I set specific, measurable goals just a few at a time, then added more when I was able to successfully achieve the first set of goals. This method of slowly adding goals just a few at a time improves the odds of success. When we set vague resolutions like "work out more" it's easy to miss them. When we set too many at once, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and give up. My recommendation is to make a few goals at a time, and break them down into smaller, measurable steps so they feel realistic. For example, if you drink ten cups of coffee a day, don't resolve to give up coffee cold turkey. Instead, start by scaling down to nine cups for two weeks. If that goes well, cut down to eight. Within a few months, you'll be down to one cup a day (because who would want to cut coffee completely out of their lives!). Whatever goals or resolutions you set for 2024, we wish you success and a happy and healthy New Year!

Wellness Within INSIGHTS ON MENTAL HEALTH FROM LOCAL COUNSELOR KEISHA SAUNDERS-WALDRON
Many titles can be used to describe Keisha SaundersWaldron: licensed professional clinical counselor, adjunct professor at Northwestern University, entrepreneur, mother of two and loving wife are just a few. Saunders-Waldron is a highly accredited mental health professional and the owner of Confidential Confessions Counseling in Liberty Township. She brings a unique combination of academics, hands-on counseling experience and a commitment to professional development to her field. Saunders-Waldron has been published in Forbes, The Baltimore Times, Business Insider, FEMI Magazine, Yahoo News and numerous local publications. We talked with Saunders-Waldron to get her insights on mental health, counseling and the intersection of academia and entrepreneurship. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR? It was a very unexpected source, a seemingly trivial episode of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Bugs Bunny portraying the role of a therapist to Elmer Fudd sparked an interest that would later guide my educational and professional pursuits. Later, in high school, I encountered an exceptional psychology teacher who further fueled my curiosity and ultimately led me to choose psychology as my academic path. As I immersed myself in the complexities of mental health, it became evident that the accessibility and comprehension of mental health services were not universally straightforward, particularly in marginalized communities. This realization became a driving force, compelling me to further my education to become an advocate for those voices that often are unheard.

WHAT DOES MENTAL HEALTH MEAN TO YOU? Mental health is the foundation of a resilient and stable mind. It is also the gateway to leading a healthy and fulfilling life, and it is essential to one’s overall well-being. It encompasses a state of balance and strength that helps individuals
navigate life's challenges with clarity and purpose. In practical terms, mental health is vital for fostering cognitive strength, emotional resilience and the ability to engage meaningfully with oneself and the world. IS MENTAL HEALTH THE SAME AS HAPPINESS? From my point of view, mental health and happiness are two different entities. You can feel content and find your "happy place" even when things seem a bit confusing in your mind. Happiness is more about feeling good emotionally, but only temporarily. Mental health, on the other hand, is on a broader spectrum. It's about your overall well-being–not just your emotions, but your thoughts and how you connect with others. Mental health is more than just those fleeting moments of joy; it's about taking care of your mind and your emotions in different ways to ensure you’re doing well overall. IN WHAT AREAS DOES CONFIDENTIAL CONFESSIONS COUNSELING SPECIALIZE? My practice is dedicated to specialized interventions, with a primary focus on addressing anxiety and depression diagnoses through both individual and couples counseling. One intervention is cognitive-behavioral techniques, which help individuals recognize and modify negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with anxiety and depression. Another is mindfulness-based strategies, which help individuals develop a non-judgmental awareness of their thoughts and feelings, fostering a more balanced and grounded mindset. In addition to this clinical emphasis, we extend our expertise to the realms of work-life balance and corporate training, particularly in employee engagement. This multifaceted approach allows me to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of individuals and the dynamics within corporate environments. WHAT MAKES YOUR PRACTICE UNIQUE? Our practice distinguishes itself through a unique and client-centric approach. We strategically introduce our

Despite the challenges of varying schedules, this method ensures the client only needs to share their stories once, regardless of who they see within our practice. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS ON THE FENCE ABOUT WHETHER THEY NEED HELP? I encourage thoughtful reflection on their current challenges and emotions. It's crucial to recognize that seeking support is not a sign of weakness, but rather a proactive step towards personal well-being. Consider the impact of these challenges on your daily life, relationships and overall functioning. If you find persistent feelings of distress or difficulty coping, or if these challenges hinder your ability to lead a fulfilling life, seeking professional help can provide valuable insights and strategies. It's essential to approach the decision with an open mind, recognizing that reaching out for assistance is a courageous and empowering choice that can lead to positive transformation and improved mental health. WHAT ARE THREE THINGS ANYONE CAN DO TO HELP IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL MENTAL HEALTH? 1. Establish a consistent routine. This includes setting regular sleep patterns and maintaining consistent mealtimes. Prioritizing self-care through routine helps create a supportive foundation for managing stress and enhancing resilience. 2. Prioritize physical activity. Engaging in regular physical exercise has been consistently linked to improved mental health. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. It also reduces levels of stress hormones, promotes better sleep and enhances cognitive function. 3. Cultivate strong social connections. Social connections provide emotional support, reduce feelings of isolation and contribute to a sense of belonging. Actively participating in social activities, whether in-person or virtually, fosters a support system. Connecting with friends and family or joining community groups can offer a sense of community and shared experiences, which can be protective factors against mental health challenges. Individual needs may vary, and seeking professional guidance when needed is a valuable part of enhancing mental health. Incorporating these lifestyle adjustments can contribute positively to overall well-being, but if challenges persist, consulting with a mental health professional can provide personalized strategies and support. CUT THE JUNK Make a Lifest yle Change with Local Celebrit y + Author Lance Alexander
Lance Alexander knows all about making big life changes. At 12 years old, he set a goal to be an actor and left his hometown of West Chester for Hollywood. There, he made his dreams come true as a teen star, acting in national commercials and Netflix’s Family Reunion. As an older teen, Lance wanted to make another big change. So, he did what he does best: he made things happen. Lance shares his journey of transformation in his inspiring book, From Junk to Hunk. Lance’s book outlines a 4-step method that helped him meet his fitness goals and lose nearly 70 pounds while overcoming an internal battle he’d been fighting for much of his childhood.
“After nearly 20 attempts to start this journey over and over again, I made a mindset change and called myself out to finally change this problem I had,” Lance shares. “I set realistic goals for myself and took it one step at a time. Taking small steps, making small changes—like a 1% effort toward your goal every single day—eventually helps you accomplish it,” he advises. “It’s a universal message: clear the ‘junk’ out of your life, which is anything negative or toxic to you that's holding you back from your goal. When you clean out that ‘junk,’ you can transform into a ‘hunk,’ which is a stronger, better version of you,” he adds.

Lance cleared the “junk” of his world by reducing toxic scrolling on social media and surrounded himself with supportive, like-minded friends. When he posted his transformation on social media, Lance received an overwhelming response from fans, many of them asking for tips to meet their own health goals. The idea for a book grew from replying to those many messages with encouraging words and advice. “I knew exactly what these people were going through, but just couldn’t respond to everybody that had questions. The light bulb went off, and I was like, ‘I really need to write this information down,’” he says. Lance is taking his experience on the road, inspiring young people across the country to join the From Junk to Hunk movement. Last fall he kicked off a book tour with a visit to the Boys & Girls Club of West Chester/Liberty.
“I wanted to give back here first,” he says of the local visit. Lance has been volunteering with Boys & Girls Clubs since he was 13 years old. “I want to convey to these kids that healthy is the new cool—being the best version of you, the strongest version of you that you can be proud of—and putting your best foot forward is an investment in you,” says Lance. “Going From Junk to Hunk is a transformation that anyone can make,” Lance emphasizes. “It not only applies to young people in physical health but fits any goals.” The incredible journey of Lance Alexander continues as he follows his heart to overall wellness and happiness, acting, writing and studying toward a journalism degree. We can’t wait to see what this son of West Chester will make happen next.

Starting Strength Cincinnati Owner Luke Schroeder explains the purpose behind the program. “Strength is the foundation that a healthy existence is built on,” Luke says. “People lose their independence and mobility because they are not strong enough. Human beings are designed to be strong. In the absence of strength, bad things happen: our backs hurt, our knees hurt, we are not capable of doing the things we love to do. You have to be intentional about developing it.” Meet five Starting Strength members who are getting strong at this local gym. ARPAN + IPSA PATEL SCIENCE OF STRENGTH As Arpan and Ipsa Patel of West Chester turn the corner into their 30s, they want to live their best lives. For this professional couple, their choice to do strength training all comes down to science. Ipsa + Arpan Patel

“There’s a general sense of muscle loss as you get older. There are a lot of academic papers on the importance of strength,” Arpan shares. “For me it was osteoporosis. My grandfather and my mom have osteoporosis,” Ipsa says. “I want to stay ahead of the game and build bone mass so that I don't have to take medications later in life.” “And we were looking for something to do together, to hold each other accountable,” she adds. SEUN ABIMBOLA EMPOWERED BY COMMUNITY Seun Abimbola has been a member of the Starting Strength community for four months. The 25-year-old wants to look fit, but that’s not her goal. “I like exercise that is useful,” Seun says. “I don’t think it matters if I have ripped abs if I can’t even pick up anything heavy. I want to be functional and strong.” Seun completes her workout with uplifting cheers from coaches and other gym members. They are proud of her progress. “I appreciate the feel of community here,” she shares. “At other gyms, I end up losing motivation. At this place, it feels more warm and it makes me want to keep coming back.” CHRISS THOMPSON STRONG RECOVERY Just one year ago, 60-year-old Chriss Thompson endured two surgeries to remove a brain tumor. As a competitive bodybuilder for 35 years, Chriss had been training on her own until her diagnosis but was looking for a recovery program with a different mindset. “I worked for 35 years to make a good-looking body, but I wasn’t strong,” Chriss shares. Post-surgery, Chriss’ left side was paralyzed. She is fighting her way to wellness and strength one lift at a time. Starting Strength is helping Chriss reclaim her life and retrain her body. “Even after my first session, I was standing straighter and walking better,” she says. “I am able! It feels so good!” Chriss exclaims. CONTINUED >

BEN WELLS AGING WELL At retirement age, Ben Wells’ goal is to promote overall health and avoid the aches and pains of growing older. A year and a half of Starting Strength training is paying off. “I can pick up my grandchildren and do normal things without worrying,” Ben notes. “My friends are having knee and hip replacements and their backs are sore…I don’t have any of that.” The Starting Strength coaches made it easy for Ben to push aside beginners’ nerves. He encourages everyone to try it.
“Don’t be intimidated—we get intensive one-on-one coaching. You don’t have to be afraid, because there’s someone to show you exactly what you need to do,” he says. From ages 11 to 97, Starting Strength members are making strides in strength. “We are passionate that strength is the most important thing you can do for yourself,” says Luke.
