Live theatre was one of the industries hit hardest by the pandemic, and due to the ongoing seating capacity restrictions, most theaters have not been able to reopen and are struggling to survive. This month we highlight four area theatre programs and share what we can all do to help bring the stages back to life.

Save Our Stages THE SHOW GOES ON FOR FOUR LOCAL THEATERS

WHEN COVID-19 MADE A DRAMATIC ENTRANCE ON THE WORLD STAGE, THE CURTAINS CLOSED IN LOCAL THEATERS. But it didn’t take long for directors to reclaim the spotlight and get back to doing what they do best: help us cope with, escape and even laugh through these difficult days. The show goes on for four local theaters as they adapt with brilliant creativity.

Director Kristen Hoch and her students at Lakota East Thunderhawk Theater are mastering the art of getting close without physically being near each other.

“The scripts allowed for all kinds of funny jokes,” Hoch tells of their fall classwork. “Like, in one scene, the frog prince and princess kissed with giant felt lips on popsicle sticks and they did a high-five with them. There was even an air-hug at one point,” she says.

The students rehearse via Zoom or in masked small groups at a safe social distance. Temperature checks, sanitizer, quarantine and postponements are all a part of theater safety protocols. Tickets, playbills and communication moved to online. Hoch and her team are ready to pivot, no matter the circumstances.

“The kids are still great kids. They still want to be here.

They still want that shot at a lead role. They still want to work on the team. We’ve just got to provide a safe way for that to happen,” Hoch adds.

Conditions are similar at the Sharonville Cultural Arts Center (SCAC), according to Executive Director Michelle Taylor and Development Director Matthew Taylor. The local venue hosts live productions for performers of all ages, movies, classes and a visual arts gallery and is now functioning at a mandated 30% capacity, dropping from 150 to about 43 seats per show.

“This season looks very different than what we originally thought it would,” says Matthew.

“We are down 75% from our projected budget for 2020,” Michelle reports.

SCAC is willing to do whatever it takes to stay open for business, and the Taylors are wearing multiple hats to fit the duties that arise.

“We have learned to flex!” says Michelle.

“We never thought we’d be in the video/film business, but that’s something we jumped in and learned how to do,” Matthew explains.

They’ve also become experts at disinfection, a necessary skill in these days of the virus.

“We spend a lot of our time cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting between performances,” Matthew continues. “It’s a whole different world for us.”

“We are trying to cater to a spectrum of the different comfort levels here as we progress,” Michelle says. “Our main priority is to keep everyone safe.”

At the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton, Executive Director Ian MacKenzie-Thurley is missing a bustling lobby full of people of all ages.

“The theater is our lifeblood,” MacKenzie-Thurley says, “however at the center of that is the health and prosperity of our audience— that’s paramount—and the health and well-being of our staff.”

The Fitton Center staff and board is seizing this time as an opportunity to better serve the community and build a connection with its people.

“We are really looking at this as an opportunity to take a step back and take a good look at all of our programming, all of our systems and our approach, and go forward in a positive way,” MacKenzie-Thurley says.

“We are trying to find diverse ways of reengaging with our audience.”

In the meantime, flexibility and patience is key.

“We ask for people’s patience as we find a path forward that is safe and sustainable,” says MacKenzie-Thurley. “We are making plans and we are changing them,” he says.

MacKenzie-Thurley reflects on the purpose of the arts and goals for the Fitton Center.

“When everything shut down, the first thing everybody went to was the arts,” he says. “We were online watching our favorite shows, downloading music and listening to our favorite songs. There were art and craft maker videos—all of this was the arts. We were the first there. We didn’t put our hand out, we put our foot forward. We asked, ‘What can we give? How can we get everybody through this lockdown and keep everybody sane?’”

“The care from our community and sense of camaraderie between the arts organizations and our funders has really been outstanding,” MacKenzie-Thurley shares. “We cannot express our appreciation enough. We can’t wait to deliver big things.

Oh, we’ve got some things planned!”

Kim Eldridge, director of Lakota West Theatre, agrees that theater is needed now more than ever.

“Musical theater in general was created as an escape from World War I,” Eldridge shares. “We need that escape from this pandemic. For those two hours, we need to envelope ourselves in the world of a musical or a show and let the arts do what they're supposed to do, which is to heal,” she says.

Eldridge is focused on giving her students the best experience she can under the tension of the pandemic.

“This is my twenty-seventh year teaching educational theater and it’s definitely the most difficult year of my career,” says Eldridge. “I’m trying to keep their spirits up. They feel the stress in the air. They are just trying to focus on the moment and not to be concerned about things that are out of their control.”

Even amidst all of the stress, the theater students are grateful.

“They are just happy to get to do theater,” Eldridge notes.

“Most of the high schools in the area aren’t doing shows this year so they are just excited to have as much of a normal season as we can.”

Eldridge is grateful, too.

“I applaud our administrators for putting in so many hours,” she says. “They are working so hard so the kids can stay in school.”

A NEW HOME FOR THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty is celebrating the new year at a new office in the heart of Olde West Chester.

“The purchase of our new office building is an incredible milestone for the Foundation,” said Erin Clemons, Foundation president & CEO. “Not only are we investing in our future and the growth of this area, but we are in a much more visible location, giving us the opportunity to re-introduce ourselves to the community.”

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION? Community foundations are grantmaking public charities dedicated to improving the lives of people in a defined local region by bringing together the financial resources of individuals, families, and businesses to support nonprofit organizations in their communities. As a local philanthropic resource, community foundations help donors make impactful gifts to a wide variety of causes.

The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty acts as a community trust, building charitable assets to address the needs of the area, while facilitating the philanthropic interests of donors in the fulfillment of their own charitable goals. Donors may choose to direct their giving to causes and organizations important to them locally and in communities across the country; their generosity provides a residual impact to the local community. In 2020, Community Foundation fund holders made a collective impact of $1.7M in charitable grants to causes close to their hearts.

LEGACY OF LOCAL IMPACT The Community Foundation launched in 1999 as a grass-roots effort by local families and businesses seeking to make a difference in West Chester and Liberty Townships through generosity of time, talent, and treasure. A recent strategic plan focused on sustainable growth is propelling the Foundation forward, widening its impact for the community, donors, and non-profit partners, and ensuring its presence as a local resource for philanthropy for years to come. Since 2018, the Community Foundation has seen a $6M growth (40%) in charitable assets, more than half of that increase coming in 2020 alone.

“The economic impact of the past year has been challenging for everyone, but the silver-lining is that those who are able to give have been more charitable than ever,” said Clemons. “People saw needs in the community, and the Foundation was here to facilitate their giving to help address those needs.”

By providing grant support for organizations such as Reach Out Lakota, EDGE Teen Center, and MetroParks of Butler County, the Foundation is helping meet immediate and future community needs, while improving the quality of life for local residents.

red-hot hobby LARRY BURKS DISCOVERS THE HISTORIC ART OF BLACKSMITHING

WHAT STARTED AS A SPARK OF INTEREST FROM VIEWING A TELEVISION SHOW HAS GROWN INTO A BELOVED HOBBY FOR WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP ADMINISTRATOR LARRY BURKS. He has now moved from the screen to the shop, where he enjoys crafting all kinds of items from hot metal: railroad spike and s-hooks, brackets, kitchen knives, handles, bottle openers and decorative leaves. Larry discovered a new hobby in a historic art.

In a scene all too common in the early days of pandemic and quarantine, Larry found himself on the couch with his kids, watching television.

“My sons and I would watch a show on History Channel called Forged in Fire, a show where they make historic weaponry,” Larry explains. “We said, ‘That would be so fun to try.’”

A Google session later, Larry was signed up for a 10-week class in metal arts at Blue Hell Studio, the Cincinnati home to artist Chris Daniel.

“I signed up for a class and after day one, I was hooked,” Larry shares. “I went all in on it.”

Larry is so hooked, that he added a forge, a small hearth for heating metals, to the shop in his garage. Using the same techniques and tools as in the Iron Age, blacksmiths heat and soften metals until they can be bent, hammered and formed into tools, knives, railings, gates and other objects.

“I am fortunate enough to have a wife that lets me have my side of the garage for what I want,” he says with a laugh. “She’s just glad I’ve got something cool to do.”

Many of us sought out productive ways to pass the time during quarantine: baking, sewing, gardening or painting. Forging metals was a great escape for Larry, as it allowed his mind a much-needed break from everything else during these stressful days.

“You really can’t concentrate on much else when you are holding glowing, red-hot steel in your hands,” he says.

Larry learned that one of the appeals of his new hobby was its artistic side.

“It’s not just all tools and bolts and nuts and cutting and drilling and grinding. There’s an artistic element, as well,” he says. “It is right-brained: numbers, measurements, calculations—and then it’s also the left side of the brain: heart, experimentation and an end product that you may not have had in mind at the start,” Larry explains. “I learned to make a leaf out of steel. It’s probably the toughest skill I learned.”

The benefits of this new hobby extend beyond filling time. Larry is engaged in a fresh way and continues to learn and perfect his blacksmithing skills as he crafts useful and decorative items for his friends and family.

“It’s addictive, it’s therapeutic, it’s artistic, it’s physical—it’s everything you want to help you sleep at night,” he says. “And I tell you what—it has worked! Other than me waking up at night with project ideas…”

Larry recommends learning something new, as he literally forges through this stressful year.

“This was something totally out of the box for me,” he says. “I would encourage everyone, it doesn’t have to be forging, but it could be crafting or knitting or whatever–to find something to take their minds off of things.

It is so important.”

This modern-day Renaissance man has discovered joy in a red-hot hobby that is also cool.

“This is a wonderful option for me,” Larry says.
