Lifestyle Letter

Women who inspire us.

I

n honor of Mother’s Day, May's issue of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle celebrates the women in our community who inspire.

Earlier this year we asked you to tell us about inspirational women who live, work or volunteer in our community. It was difficult to narrow the list, but this month please enjoy the stories of our community’s exceptional women. Their accomplishments range from volunteerism and charity to outstanding examples of local entrepreneurs. We hear from a passionate Lakota educator, and we recognize the achievements of two Lakota students, each of whom has made a name for herself on the national stage. Don’t forget, Mother’s Day is May 14. One of my favorite parts of Mother’s Day is being awakened by the smell of coffee and a home-cooked breakfast (that I didn’t have to make), brought to me in bed by my husband and two sons. Melanie Cedargren from The Spicy Olive shares some of her favorite breakfast recipes to help your family create an amazing Mother’s Day brunch or a simple breakfast in bed. Our Women to Watch aren’t the only female focus of this issue. We invite you to get to know the caring and committed team at Hilltop Obstetrics & Gynecology. And local legal expert, Kara Lyons, shares the importance of making sure that our readers have set up a will or trust.

INTERNATIONAL LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH May is International Lyme Disease Awareness Month, reminding us that the ticks that carry this disease are far more prevalent in our region than most people realize. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 300,000 Americans contract Lyme disease each year. One of our readers, who was diagnosed with the Lyme disease in 2010, asked us to spread awareness about this lesser-known disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by Ixodes ticks, also known as deer ticks. Ticks tend to be near the ground, in leaf litter, grasses, bushes and fallen logs. To protect yourself from exposure, avoid tick habitats, dress defensively by wearing shoes, socks, long pants and sleeves, use repellent on exposed skin, and check for ticks before entering your home. Pets can act as “tick magnets,” so be sure to check your pets before they come inside as well. BuckeyesLymeAwareness@gmail.com

TURN THE PAGE TO SUMMER MIDPOINTE LIBRARY MAKES SUMMER READING FUN

22

ARTICLE LAURA LEAVITT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | May 2017

D

on’t close your books just because school is out. This summer, MidPointe Library West Chester is again offering its exciting Summer Reading Program. With a new online component and additional programming, there is something for all ages at the library. Beginning June 1, children and teens who participant in the Summer Reading Program will log their reading minutes in order to achieve various levels. Each level offers prizes, including a chance to win a grand prize for top readers.

New this year, participants now have the new option to log their hours online through the library’s website. The 2017 Summer Reading Program theme is “Build a Better World,” and in addition to logging reading hours, participants gain access to programs including Escape the Room games, gardening activities, makerspaces, animal presentations and more. These programs are free to the public, though most require tickets that you can pick up at the library in advance.

“We have a creative activity with recycling, some Pokémon-Go Walks, a puppet workshop, all in addition to regular programs like our Bricks and Blocks Club,” says Sharon Kolatalo, the Youth Services Team Leader. Not only does MidPointe offer reading programs for school-age children and teens, but also for preschoolers and infants. Although they’re too young to read, these children benefit from having books read to them. “For the littlest ones, the books read to them by mom or dad, grandpa or grandma… count toward their reading log,” says Cari Hillman, Public Relations Manager for the MidPointe Library System. Hillman points out that as participants strive to get to the next level of prizes, they are also combatting the “summer slump,” a documented reduction in reading comprehension that many students show when they return to school after the summer vacation. Summer reading programs make reading fun, but also keep children on track for the next school year.

MidPointe also offers programming for adults, encouraging them to read and explore the library. And yes, adults compete for summer reading prizes as well. As Hillman says, “Why let the kids have all the fun? Who doesn’t want to be rewarded for doing something good?” One of the unique reasons why MidPointe’s reading program is successful is the many teen volunteers who staff programming during the summer. Last year 655 volunteer hours were logged by teen volunteers, and this summer promises to have high involvement once again. MidPointe’s Summer Reading Program truly has something for everyone. “This is your library,” Kolatalo says. “Come see all it has to offer!” For those who are eager to get started before the June 1 kick-off, a special passport of activities will be available May 18-31 to prepare for summer reading. To participate in the program, go online or visit the Children’s Desk at MidPointe Library West Chester. MidpointeLibrary.org

Lyons is a third-generation attorney who concentrates her practice on wills, trusts, estate planning, and probate administration at Lyons & Lyons Attorneys at Law in West Chester. She’s a life-long resident of West Chester and loves helping local residents plan for their futures. We recently sat down with Lyons to learn more about the necessity of creating a will or trust and how it benefits the whole family. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WILL AND A TRUST?

The basic difference is how they are administered. A will goes through the probate process, which is the court that handles estates. With a will, you also name a guardian of your minor children and an executor, someone who will gather all your assets, pay all debts and distribute property according to the will. A will is a public document whereas a trust is a private document. With a trust, you’re essentially putting your assets into one entity to hold and administer your property, but you have direction and control over that property. You still have beneficiaries listed, but it doesn’t go through probate court. Instead, you name a trustee to manage and distribute the assets. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SET UP A WILL OR A TRUST?

Do it sooner rather than later. Typically, people will wait until they’re married or have a few kids, but I always suggest starting to think about estate planning once you turn 18, the age of majority. Young adults, especially college students, seldom think about estate planning, but there are important documents to consider once you become an adult. CAN YOU GIVE US A FEW EXAMPLES?

A health care power of attorney is important for any adult because if something were to happen to them, the hospital has no obligation to contact the parents. It’s also smart to consider having a durable power of attorney for finances. God forbid something does happen to the young adult, a trusted person should be able to transact business on their behalf. Wills and trusts become important once you acquire assets, because if you pass away with assets and no will, the state has a plan on how to distribute your assets, which may or may not be your plan.

ONCE YOU HAVE A WILL OR TRUST, DOES IT NEED TO GET UPDATED?

Major life changes should always cause you to reassess. Some major life changes include marriage, death, birth of a child, starting a business, divorce, etc. If your financial circumstances change dramatically, you’ll want to reassess your plans. Your kids’ guardians may change over time as well. Let’s say your parents were their named guardians and pass away or become incapable of being their guardians. You would need to update your documents. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SET UP?

On average, from start to finish, it takes a few weeks to have an initial meeting to gather the information, draft and review the documents, then finalize and execute the documents. Obviously, if you have a more complicated estate, it will take a little longer. I have people come in all the time who walk out and ask themselves, "Why did I wait so long?" It’s like a weight off their shoulders. They say they’ve been thinking about doing this for years, but thought the process would be a lot more harrowing than it actually is. If anything, having your estate planning documents in place gives you peace of mind. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE PUT THIS OFF?

People don't like to talk about estate planning because it involves talking about their assets and coming to grips with their own mortality—two things people don't like to do. When children come into the picture, it usually gives people a little bit more pressure to make a plan. Do it sooner rather than later because tomorrow is never promised. You might be young, healthy and vibrant, but so many things can happen. Lyons recommends anyone who is thinking it’s time to set up a will or a trust to give her a call (513.777.2222). “I like being able to help people. It sounds corny, but it’s true. I have people coming to me from all types of situations,” Lyons says. “I love that when people leave they know they don’t have to worry about it anymore.” LyonsAndLyonsLaw.com

The Philanthropist:

Jamie Beringer

Where others see trash, Jamie Beringer finds worth. Beringer is co-founder of Bicycle Recycle, a local nonprofit business that fixes up bicycles, scooters, tricycles and skateboards and gives them to local kids in need, for free. Beringer can often be found buzzing around town, drumming up support from neighbors and local business owners and collecting toys with wheels for the nonprofit that is giving both bikes and kids a second chance. Along with business partner Dave Lodder, director of operations, Beringer has given away hundreds of bikes and new helmets to foster children via Butler County 28

Children’s Services, homeless shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, and other local nonprofits since April, 2014. “Everybody gives kids clothes and food,” Beringer says. “We give kids freedom and dignity. With a bike, they have something to call their own.” “I am very passionate about kids,” she says. “They don’t have a choice. If we can give one bike to one kid and that kid changes his life because he sees that there are good people out there, then we’ve done our job.” Bicycle Recycle partners with Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty to fund the project.

Beringer is a single mom to three tween boys. She enlists their help with collection drives, scheduled pick-ups from businesses and neighbors, and fundraising projects, including crafting wreaths and jewelry from spare bike parts. “I feel blessed. I am trying to instill into my children that, ‘You are lucky. You need to appreciate what you have,’” she says. “I want to be a good role model. I don’t want my boys to be selfish." Beringer has a knack for finding the positive in people and situations. With her generosity and energy, our community’s castoffs can boost children’s lives. Facebook.com/BicycleRecycleOhio

The Mentor:

Nicky Willbrand

The best leaders are the best followers. Nicky Willbrand follows God’s call on her life. Fortunately for us, God led her to West Chester, where she is a volunteer leader of a local ministry with teenagers. 2017 is a benchmark year for this Woman to Watch. This year, Willbrand and her husband Daniel mark 20 years of Young Life with Lakota West High School. There’s no time for a big celebration—with four kids of her own and leading more than 150 teens at weekly gatherings and several Bible studies each week, Willbrand has a full family van and calendar. She’s a mentor, community-builder and caring adult to hundreds of local teenagers. And she loves it. Young Life is a thread woven through Willbrand’s own spiritual tapestry. When she was a high school teen in Milford and college student at Miami University, she was

influenced by leaders and peers involved in its life-changing ministry. Now, she volunteers with Young Life to lead a team of 12 college students and adults at Lakota West and a team of 35 dedicated leaders within the Lakota Community, covering West, East and Wyldlife, a junior-high-aged program. “Young Life is a non-denominational Christian outreach to high school and middle school adolescents where we get the chance to introduce people to the person of Jesus Christ in a fun, non-threatening way,” explains Willbrand. “Club is our weekly gathering. We call it organized chaos!” About 150 high school students attend Club each week to sing, play games and hear a short talk about Jesus. Another 35 teens meet in Willbrand’s basement for Campaigners, a co-ed Bible study.

“We enjoy being around teenagers and having a chance to speak truth into their lives…” she pauses and blinks away tears. “I look at my own high schooler, and I want someone to speak truth into her life. That third-party adult is really important at this age. Kids are finding independence from their parents, and that’s natural and it’s good and they should, but to have another voice directing them is of great value,” she says. Wherever God leads, Willbrand has the courage to follow. She’s a woman on a mission, without ever needing to leave her home zip code to make a difference. Lakota West Young Life’s Club meets weekly on Wednesdays, 8-9:15 p.m., 7724 Service Center Drive, West Chester (near Pump it Up). LakotaWestYL@gmail.com

The Musician:

Allison Zimmerman Photo by Maslov Photography

Allison Zimmerman marches to the beat of her own drum. As a clarinet player since she was 11, this Lakota East High School senior is immersed in music. Zimmerman is poised to crash through the glass ceiling with hopes for a career as a band director, a field currently dominated by men. Zimmerman cannot imagine a happy life without music. In January, she performed with the elite Bands of America Honor Band, which marched in the 2017 Tournament of Roses parade. As one of the drum majors leading the Lakota East Marching Band for 30

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | May 2017

the past two years, she took center stage at numerous shows. In April, she completed a season with Rhythm X, an indoor marching band, with a performance at World Finals. Practice and hard work are the keys to Zimmerman’s success, musically and personally. “I put in a lot of effort every single day. I make sure that I am dedicated and prepared before even walking into a rehearsal. If I have all of my stuff together, then I am able to teach other people around me. I practice all the time,” she says. “When everyone is the best that they can be, we can all be better as a whole.”

Zimmerman is more than a gifted musician and leader of the band; she is a community leader. She excels as a student, volunteer and tutor to special needs kids at a Lakota elementary school. “It just takes one person to make a difference,” Zimmerman says. “Everything that you do affects everyone else around you.” This fall, Zimmerman will study music education at University of Dayton. Keep your eyes—and ears—out for Allison Zimmerman. Her love of harmony is changing the landscape of our community and the music world, one note at a time.

The Educator:

Aisha Moore

Aisha Moore is a favorite teacher to many local children and parents. In a new role this school year, Moore’s classroom has expanded to include the entire West Chester and Liberty Township community. Meet your new teacher, a Woman to Watch. After 18 years as a teacher to first and second graders at Lakota, and six years as an adjunct professor in elementary education at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Moore is currently serving as a teacher on special assignment as a leader for cultural diversity for the Lakota Local School District. She strengthens the weak spots in any situation with education: in herself, in her classrooms and in the community. She works toward ending stereotypes, ignorance and biases related to diversity. “My personal goal is to have people think before they speak,” she says. “I’ve seen and heard teachers say things to kids that are unacceptable, with an unconscious bias.”

“I lived it,” she shares. “I personally experienced diversity issues. I know what it’s like for parents not to like me because I am black.” Monthly, Moore and her colleagues gather “Champions,” a group of one or two teachers from each Lakota building, to discuss diversity issues and lead diversity training for staff. “This year is about getting together to work on ourselves, look within ourselves, so that we can help others,” she explains. “Next, we will train the trainers within our own schools.” Moore is discovering the power in putting like-minded people together. She broaches topics that often divide people, and finds links between them to build relationships instead. “I want people to feel comfortable talking about diversity issues, speaking up when they hear things that are not okay,” she says. “A lot of people get closed up when you are talking about race and other differences between people.”

Moore’s job includes recruitment and retention of minority staff members. In March, she was an integral part of the team that organized the district’s first Job Expo. She used her natural skills for hospitality to design an event to attract a diverse pool of applicants to fill open district-wide positions. “We had about 2,000 people show up,” she says. “Hopefully we can do this event every year to bring in more applicants and make people feel more comfortable coming in…people of any ethnicity.” Moore’s warm and welcoming personality comes from a fire within—a blaze of passion for learning, children and advocacy for diversity. Her fiery spirit is sparking a community-wide fire, burning down the differences between us and inspiring change. “I’m going in a direction I love,” she shares with a wide smile. Moore leads with grace, compassion CONTINUED > and hope. May 2017 | West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle

The Leader:

Carol Lucio

Being able to impact the life of one person is an accomplishment; Carol Lucio gets to impact the lives of approximately 7,000 Butler County students each year. Lucio serves as Executive Director for the Butler County Junior Achievement Program, an organization that educates students from kindergarten through twelfth grade on its three pillars: work preparedness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The program offers in-class and experiential learning. For the in-class portion, volunteers take the Junior Achievement created curriculum and visit classrooms to lead each lesson with the students. For an experiential perspective, students are given 32

the opportunity to participate in job exploration days in various companies around Butler County to see what the working world is like. “I was a Junior Achievement student in high school, so it’s fun for me to give back to an organization that I benefitted from. It’s part of my passion,” Lucio explains. Lucio has been affiliated with the organization for 32 years. As executive director, she oversees the organization’s resources, including financials and volunteers. Lucio works with each school individually, recruits and trains volunteers, and organizes fundraising efforts to ensure they can continue to offer their program at no charge.

“My goal is for every student in our region to get to have the benefit of Junior Achievement at least once. We always come up short on our resources to meet demand,” Lucio says. “I would love if that never happened.” Because of Lucio’s dedication and passion, students can develop a new perspective and make a connection between the education they’re receiving now and the career they can have in the future. “We are changing their outlook and their futures,” Lucio explains. The Athlete:

Abby Prohaska At just 17 years old, Abby Prohaska has what it takes to be one of the best in her field. Indeed, ambition and dedication are personified in Prohaska, who is a Lakota West High School junior and nationally-ranked basketball player. “I fell in love with the sport because of how challenging the game is,” Prohaska reflects. “My favorite part is being part of a team. They become your extended family and friendships are made that last a lifetime.” Prohaska’s passion for the sport gleams throughout her list of accolades, including a bronze medal she earned with the 2016 USA Basketball Women’s Under-17 World Championship Team. To qualify, 140 34

women from across the country participated in trials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. Prohaska was one of the final 12 team members selected, who competed in the FIBA Under-17 World Championships in Zaragoza, Spain last year. “Each country played different styles of basketball,” Prohaska explains. “The experience helped me learn a lot and grow as a person and a player.” Locally, Prohaska became a state champion with the Firebirds in 2015. She was also selected first and second team AllConference, first team All-State, and participated in the McDonald’s Butler County All-Star Game. Even with impressive

achievements under her belt, Prohaska doesn’t focus on awards. “It’s an honor to be considered a top-level player, but I always remind myself that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the coaches and teammates who believed in me,” she says. Prohaska’s basketball career shows no signs of slowing. Though she’s only a junior, Prohaska has verbally committed to attend Notre Dame University and hopes to play for the WNBA or on an international level. “I would like to play basketball as long as I am able to,” Prohaska says. “I enjoy being a part of a team and creating meaningful relationships.”

omen are given the ability to give the gift of life, but in order to do so they must first care for the life that they live. The physicians at Hilltop Obstetrics and Gynecology understand the complexities of women’s health and strive to provide every woman with the personal care she deserves. Located in West Chester, with additional offices in Lebanon and Middletown, Hilltop is a standout in its field. For nearly 30 years, this independent, private practice has been faithfully serving patients and encouraging the healthiest living. “Every patient is treated as an individual and their care is tailored based on their personal medical history, prior surgeries, family history risk assessment and environment conditions…meaning no treatment fits all,” explains Dr. Juan Reina, who joined the Hilltop family in 2008. In the dynamic field of women’s healthcare, Hilltop’s physicians pride themselves in their board-certified status and staying current with the ever-changing treatments and procedures as they become available.

Dr. Rhonda Washington holds baby Charlotte

Dr. Rhonda Washington and the Rhoden family

“Our patients love the fact that it is our priority to provide access to healthcare services that are appropriate and best to meet their specific needs,” Reina continues. Hilltop encourages patients of all ages to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes a nutritious diet, routine aerobic exercise and avoidance or cessation of harmful habits. Special care is given to promote healthy initiatives by giving advice and recommendations during both prenatal care and annual examination visits. “When women get to be over 40, we make sure we stress that it’s time for a yearly mammogram, and if they’re over 50 to add a colonoscopy to that,” says Dr. Rhonda Washington, who has been part of the Hilltop family since 2013. While each physician on Hilltop’s team is highly-skilled, it isn’t just medical knowledge that makes Hilltop unique. Their offices feel homey and welcoming by the tight-knit bonds that are formed between each staff member. “A lot of people work together, but as for their relationship outside of the office, some groups never socialize or see each other and that’s very different with us. A lot of practices say they’re a family but we really are,” Washington explains. “We vacation together and spend time outside of the office with each other.” The familial feeling is felt by all, which is appropriate given that they are assisting women in birthing new life. There are many birthing options for women to consider, but thanks to Hilltop’s partnership with Atrium Medical Center, a new option is now available through the Natural Beginnings Birth Center.

Natural Beginnings is a natural-birth delivery program for low-risk pregnant women, meaning medication is not used to aid during the birth. Through Natural Beginnings, patients participate in orientation with labor and delivery nurses as well as education on natural childbirth. It is the only center of its type in the Greater Cincinnati area. Janna Rhoden was one Hilltop patient who opted for the natural option this year with the birth of her first daughter, Charlotte. “When [my daughter] was born and I picked her up, she was very alert and looking right at me,” Rhoden recalls. “The epidurals affect the baby too,” which is one of the reasons Rhoden opted for a natural delivery. Women who have a high-risk pregnancy are not eligible to deliver in the Natural Beginnings center, but that does not mean they cannot have a natural childbirth. Anyone considering natural childbirth should prepare and attend one of many birthing class options at Natural Beginnings. Through the program, Rhoden received all the necessary education to be fully comforted and prepared for her natural birth plan, as well as the high-quality attention and care that Hilltop is known for. “Dr. Washington is the one who delivered my daughter and she is just wonderful,” Rhoden smiles. “She was very kind and compassionate, and I just had a great experience with her.” Hilltop strives to provide this positive experience for each patient who walks through the door. After all, one of their main goals is to keep women healthy through personal care. HilltopOBGYN.com May 2017 | West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle

Don't Fall Prey To Too Many Rays

ARTICLE MICHELLE MOODY

T

he sun is out and pool season is nearly upon us. With the ending of school and beginning of summer, everyone loves spending more time outside, soaking up the rays. It’s easy to get excited about the long, sun-filled days, but it’s important to remember the risks that can come with too much sun exposure. Dr. Scott Grevey, M.D., and his expert team at Dermatology & Surgery of Southern Ohio remind us that May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), cancers of the skin are the most common of all types of cancer, with about 3.3 million Americans being diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Additionally, ACS estimates there are more than one million unreported cases of non-melanoma cancers annually in the U.S. “Detection is a critical factor in the successful treatment of skin cancer. Skin cancers that are not readily identified or properly treated can often lead to much larger surgeries and the potential for greater complications,” Dr. Grevey warns. He recommends an annual skin check for most patients; however, if there is a personal or family history of skin cancer, that frequency should increase to every six months. Dr. Grevey encourages all his patients to become familiar with their skin by performing monthly self-skin exams. 40

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | May 2017

“Melanoma or atypical moles often will present as an irregular pigmentation and generally there are subtle changes that frequently go undetected. Non-Melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, often will present as redness or raised bumps on the skin or a sore that doesn’t want to heal,” Dr. Grevey explains. “Any non-healing sore of the skin should be evaluated to rule out cancer.” While it’s smart to keep a diligent eye out for changes to your own skin, dermatologists are trained in the identification and advanced treatments for skin cancers. “Most patients are unaware of the fact they have a precancerous or cancerous spot,” Dr. Grevey says. “It usually requires a trained professional to identify the early and subtle findings of a developing skin cancer.” Not only should skin cancer be a concern, but chronic UV exposure can lead to additional problems like premature aging of the skin. “Much of what we as dermatologists do today is trying to fend off the aging process,” Grevey says. Grevey, Martha Hickmann, M.D., and the team at Dermatology & Surgery are expanding to meet the growing needs of our community. Nurse Practitioner Kristen Borchelt has joined the practice with nearly 25 years of experience in the medical f ield.

“We are very excited and feel she is a great addition to our team,” Dr. Grevey says. “Kristen is very meticulous and provides a very comprehensive skin evaluation.” As a West Chester resident himself, Dr. Grevey enjoys working within his own community and has been providing comprehensive dermatologic and cosmetic care for more than twenty years. MOM KNOWS BEST

INSPIRATIONAL MEMORIES FROM LOCAL MOMS AND DAUGHTERS ARTICLE ABBEY MCMAHON

I

n May, we honor all the moms who love and support their kids, whether they’re infants, adults or angels. We asked local moms and daughters to share their favorite quote, memory or inspiration about motherhood. This is what they had to say. "The best thing about my mom was she was there for everything–didn’t matter what it was. The fun thing about that: she is still there for me today whenever I need her, even though I am now a mom with four kids of my own." —Shelly O’Neill, Emery Federal Credit Union “One of my favorite things about being a mom is watching my kids grow up and discover who they are—their unique talents, ideas and passions in life. Seeing them transform into amazing people makes all of

50

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | May 2017

the ups and downs of being a parent completely worth it.” —Kristen Bitonte, Liberty Township Administrator “I feel very blessed and lucky to have a mother who is not only my best friend, but she is also the best grandma to my two children. My children love her dearly, and I wouldn't change a thing about our relationship. I thank God every day for her.” —Alison Shiver, Shiver Security “My mom, Pam Webb, is the most thoughtful and caring person, and she goes to extremes to make our family happy. One great example of this is her made-up holiday: ValensGivings. Every February she hosts a full Thanksgiving meal complete with Valentine’s gifts, games and décor. I’m so grateful for the hard work and careful consideration she provides to help our family make the best memories together.” —Danielle Webb, Community First Solutions

“MY FAVORITE QUOTE, THINKING OF MY DAUGHTER HAS ALWAYS BEEN: ‘MY DAUGHTER IS JUST A LITTLE GIRL WHO GREW UP TO BE MY BEST FRIEND. WE LAUGH TOGETHER, CRY TOGETHER, SHARE SECRETS TOGETHER, GO OUT TOGETHER AND ARE ALWAYS THERE TO GROW TOGETHER. IT'S A SPECIAL UNBREAKABLE BOND.’” —SHERRY ARMSTEAD, ART ON SYMMES “THE MOST EMPOWERING IMPRESSION IS WHEN YOU REALIZE YOUR MOM IS HUMAN. BEFORE THAT REALIZATION, YOU BELIEVE YOUR MOM TO BE INFALLIBLE, AND FROM THAT REALIZATION, YOU KNOW SHE IS AUTHENTIC.” —JUDI BOYKO, WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP ADMINISTRATOR

“CHILDREN ARE THE GREATEST GIFT. LIFE SERVES UP CHAOS, STRESS, AND NEGATIVITY; BUT, WHEN I LOOK AT MY KIDS' FACES, ALL IS RIGHT IN THE WORLD.” —NOEL BALSTER, MOTHER TERESA CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
