LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health + Wellness

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Douglas McDermott douglas.mcdermott@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this edition wanting to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life, it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle; it’s what you do MOST days. It’s not the 'sometimes choices' we make, it’s the 'majority of the time' choices. So plan a vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days; it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you, along with trying to do our best as well.

Best High Schools: New Rankings Released

New State Park Coming To Southern Chester County

In the most recent high school analysis by education platform Niche, Westtown School in West Chester ranked 16th out of the top 25 private high schools in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester received the 20th spot among the top 25 public high schools within the state. The new 2023 Best Schools and Districts rankings provide insight for parents on 92,743 public schools, 30,112 private schools and 11,820 school districts nationwide.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf selected Big Elk Creek Park in southern Chester County as one of three state parks being developed within a $45 million project, including pollinator meadows and streamside forest buffers. The other two parks are Susquehanna Riverlands, York County, and Vosburg Neck, Wyoming County. All three parks are open to the public, but have limited amenities until upgrades are completed, which is expected to be fully operational at the end of 2026. PASA Award Of Achievement In Service To Chester County Professional

Local Veterans Spotlighted In New, Countywide Initiative

Where West Chester Area High School Ranks In State

Dr. Noreen O’Neill, director of Innovative Educational Services at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), was awarded the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators’ Award of Achievement in Service to the Profession. This award honors commitment to excellence as demonstrated through notable service to education. Dr. George Fiore, CCIU executive director and president-elect of PASA, says Noreen's "dedication to public education as well as staff and student success is second to none."

Chester County commissioners, based in West Chester, started “Operation Green Light,” a new initiative to support and raise awareness of veterans. Susan Price, director of Chester County’s department of veterans affairs, indicates there are 24,000-plus veterans in the county. "They deserve our support, and I encourage everyone who lives here to display a green light, to show our veterans and their families that they are seen and appreciated.” More information is available online at Chesco.org/Veterans.

West Chester Area High School ranked No. 25 out of 495 school districts in Pennsylvania, according to the 2023 rankings provided recently by Niche, an educational platform, headquartered in Pittsburgh. The district received an overall grade of A+. It ranked No. 8 out of 495 in athletics. The district covers Bayard Rustin, Henderson and East high schools; three middle schools and five elementary schools. It has 11,972 students.

Results are in from the 1st Annual West Chester Lifestyle Readers’ Choice awards program. The initiative was announced during October 2022 to celebrate beloved businesses and groups in the West Chester region. Nominations and voting ended during November. Online voting was conducted to determine which businesses that readers think are the best in nearly 60 different categories. Amenities, job opportunities, great schools and desirable, dependable retail services are part of West Chester’s appeal. The historic borough of West Chester is one of four Pennsylvania cities that landed on 2021’s Top 100 Best Places To Live in America. It seemed like a great time to focus on the positives of area businesses, too, especially given that West Chester Lifestyle is a premiere resource for what’s happening in the community. Regardless of margins in voting, everyone on the overall list is a winner, including finalists. We salute all of the nominees, and are pleased this recognition program honors business establishments in specific categories of local living, all in this area originally known as Turk’s Head in 1762.

Cosmetic treatments performed by skilled, experienced medical professionals await within the state-of-the-art facility: Contoured Medspa in Chadds Ford. Contoured Medspa team members are on a mission to enhance, refine and emphasize each person’s individual beauty, asserts founder Amy Litz. "When you feel good, you physically glow. When you glow, your heart begins to shine. We believe that beauty can change the world. Every single one of our patients deserves to step into this personal strength," she says. Amy shares that each client's background, personality and current lifestyle tailor their personal recommendations, which her team delivers with photographic analysis and complimentary consultations. Contoured's medical director, Dr. Benjamin Lam, says they believe education is the foundation to proper medspa procedures. "Our staff remains consistently trained through visiting educators, local and cross-country aesthetic conferences, and frequent communication with board-certified medspa specialists," he says."Pharmaceutical and cutting-edge equipment ensure the proper execution of our knowledge." As a nationally certified physician associate, Contoured's Jennifer Romania says she has a passion to serve others by using her knowledge of internal medicine and experience as a dermatology PA-C to achieve beautifully balanced and natural-looking results in aesthetic medicine as an injector.

Joining Jennifer as injectors are Pam Alger and Ava Taraschi, both registered nurses. Pam worked in plastic surgery for three decades before joining the medspa. Anchored with extensive training, Ava also handles laser services, and is certified in all aesthetic services offered at Contoured Medspa. Contoured's aestheticians are Jenny Hall and Dana Phillips, who provide individualized services, such as anti-aging treatments, acne mitigation, hair growth rejuvenation, custom hydrafacials, skin tone rejuvenation. Dana's often referred to as a total skin care guru because most of her entire career has been in dermatology. Additionally, Jenny is a cancer-aware skin care specialist trained by the Greet The Day Foundation. She also specializes in skin care for seniors, using what she calls "gentle yet effective products" to address the many skin issues that elderly may face.

This medspa also offers gift cards. "Contoured Medspa fosters the warmest and most relaxing environment in all of Chester and Delaware County," declares Amy. "No matter female or male, no matter wise or young, we strive to make each client feel respected and comfortable, as if we have invited a long-term friend over. Our office and appointment rooms remain sanitary, and are cleaned to a medical-grade level after each session." Amy says Contoured started by offering popular, non-invasive services, such as Coolsculpting and hydrafacials, which is where she says many clients start their journey. The wellness facility then evolved into a full-service Medspa. "One of our clients refers to Contoured as the community barber shop, where you come and hang out, talk to the staff like we're your girlfriends, and leave feeling pretty and with a smile on your face. I think what truly separates us from other medspas is our dedication to our patients' satisfaction with their results. We sincerely want everyone to be thrilled with their results and feel like their money was well spent," assures Amy. 610.379.1564 GetContoured.com

Amy founded Contoured during September 2018. Prior, she spent 14 years in aesthetics as both a filler sales representative and a Coolsculpting trainer. She says she thoroughly understands what a challenge it is to juggle it all, and continue to look and feel your best, especially with having kids for which to care. "I finally decided that, besides being a mom, what brings me the most joy in life is helping others feel beautiful," she recalls. "My goal when opening the business was to provide an environment where patients could feel totally at ease and comfortable," she recalls. "Women always told me how intimidated they felt even calling 'one of those places', let alone walking through the door, and that they wouldn’t even know where to start." She adds that Contoured service providers spend quite a bit of time creating personal plans for each patient so they aren’t overwhelmed. "I feel the real definition of beauty is about confidence. When a woman is confident, she naturally exudes beauty. At Contoured, our tagline is 'where confidence comes complimentary.'"

ROTARY CLUB OF WEST CHESTER MEMBERS RAISE COMMUNITY FUNDS TO ASSIST 10 LOCAL CHARITIES

Rotary Club of West Chester members awarded $30,000 to representatives of 10 nonprofits. The funds came from a generous, anonymous donor. Community Philanthropic Committee members chose from 22 nonprofit applications. Kathleen Sanger, Home of the Sparrow development director, states: “No one nonprofit can do their job alone. We work together to provide safety nets for individuals and families who need support. You have no idea how important and how far your donations go.” Glenda Brion, Community Warehouse executive director, explains they provide furniture and household goods weekly for 10 to 12 families coming out of shelters. She says their grant will deliver items that "make clients' houses into homes.” “Believe and Achieve partners with the West Chester Area School District to provide positive experiences for students during summers,” says Kara Todd. “We provide morning classes, afternoon field trips, and farm fresh markets which provide produce and fruit for families.” Doug Pacitti, representing Chester County Children, says their volunteer staff secures funds

enabling underprivileged children to attend summer camp; 65 attended in 2022. “Providing rent assistance and other help for single, working parents remains the mission of North Star of Chester County," explains Don Neimetz, executive director. “There are lots of community shelters, but our mission is keeping families together,” shares David James, a board member at Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children, a nonprofit that just celebrated its 200th anniversary. The Westside Community Center, a new awardee this year, will use its grant "to empower the community’s next leaders,” says Ryan Enns, explaining they provide after-school/post-high school programs to prepare students for life. New this year is immigration legal services, he says. Heather Robino, representing another new awardee, Parish Hall Kitchen, says their program feeds the hungry and serves a hot meal every Friday night for 45 to 50 people. This program started at Holy Trinity Church. “In 2017, we started a culinary program," she adds. ”Then when COVID came along, we started a ParishTo-Go program, serving over 300 households on a regular basis.” Support for the 24-hour Crisis Line is a priority of the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. "Some funds will be used to provide services to the 15 traumatized children in the shelter,” comments Sandra Romeo. The Barn at Springbrook Farm helps children through animal-assisted activities. “Seventy percent of the 350 children served are autistic. Children learn socialization, and get help with verbalization on a one-on-one basis by volunteers,” explains Nan Latona. “We're 100 percent reliant on volunteers, but with the upkeep of the animals and barn, the importance of donations cannot be stressed enough. Only 8 percent of funding comes from fees."

Cheers To Refreshing Mocktails B R I N G O N F U N , F I Z Z Y N O N -A L C O H O L I C M I X E D D R I N K S

Often called virgin cocktails or temperance drinks, modern-day mocktails are most welcome for all and are becoming their own category. Suffice it to say, the concept of Shirley Temples has come a long way since being invented in the late 1930s! They even incorporate more than cherries these days. A bartender at Chasen's in Beverly Hills reportedly created the special drink for the actress during the pinnacle point of her fame. Want a sweeter sip from these featured recipes? Simply swap sparkling water or seltzer with lemon-lime soda.

Apple Cider Mule Mocktail

ingredients: • 3 cups apple cider (apple juice isn't the best substitute, but pear cider can be applied for a different twist) • 1½ cups ginger ale • 1½ cups plain seltzer water (or orange-flavored seltzer) • 2 large apples, thinly sliced (or pears if going that route) • • ½ cup pomegranate arils • ½ cup frozen cranberries

directions: 1. In a pitcher or punch bowl, stir together the apple cider, ginger ale and seltzer. It’s best if all ingredients are chilled ahead of time. 2. Add in sliced apples or pears and pomegranate arils. Refrigerate until ready to serve 3. Just before serving, add the frozen cranberries or garnish with fresh or dried apple slices and cinnamon sticks (not ground cinnamon). 4. Serve in glasses with ice or slightly warmed in mugs. Bonus: Apple and pear slices also become delicious flavor bombs to eat at the end of the drink.

Food Fads 2023's Possible Tasty Trends To Track

With New Year's Resolutions often come new diet-related vows. It can be a great time to get out a culinary crystal ball to envision where food product innovations and customer preferences are headed in 2023. Spotlighted here are a few, broad-based predictions based on insights from food enthusiasts.

1. Pasta Made From Produce: With many consumers seeking foods that help reduce heart disease risks and improve brain health, some may incorporate different produce into plantbased pasta; meaning, pastas that are sweet potatoes, beets, zucchini, spaghetti squash and hearts of palm alternatives. 2. Dates: This high-in-fiber-and-antioxidants fruit can be an alternative natural sweetener, whether as date syrup, pitted dates in smoothies, date paste, or in ketchup or overnight oats. Date dough can be baked into cookies and breads. 3. Retro Favorites: Due to longing for simpler, pre-pandemic times, some predict nostalgia will eke into product shelves or be recreated in kitchens, such as vegan-friendly, boxed mac and cheese; tuna melts using Greek yogurt and Thai seasonings; veggie-packed chow mein fritters; or classic sodas with added prebiotic benefits. 4. Seven Flavors: One of the biggest flavor trends anticipated is back to basics: feel-good vanilla or strawberry added to newer flavors, such as salted caramel. Another desired flavor will be "complex heat" combinations. 5. Street Foods: In the pursuit of authenticity, consumers appear especially interested in chaat masala, a tangy spice blend from North India and a staple ingredient in many street food dishes. 6. Fusion: More sweet and spicy pairings, such as Southern peach habanero potato chips.
