The Women Who Shape West Bloomfield

Every now and then, we get a moment to pause and reflect on the people who quietly shape the rhythm of our days. This month, we shine a light on the women — mothers, mentors and everyday heroes — who add warmth and strength to our lives here in West Bloomfield.

Mother’s Day often brings to mind cards, flowers and heartfelt brunches. But beyond the traditions, it’s also a powerful reminder of the women who have shown up for us, in ways big and small. Some are moms by birth, others by choice or role. They are caretakers and coaches, counselors and confidantes.

Across West Bloomfield, you’ll find women like these. Women who build businesses with passion and perseverance. Women who invest time in causes that matter. Women who balance a thousand things and still find time to lift up the people around them.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to celebrate this month, consider supporting one of the many women-owned businesses in our magazine and in our area. Whether it’s a local boutique, a wellness spa or a bakery, your support goes further than you think — and often lands right back in our own community.

So, here’s to the women who give without needing credit. Who lead with heart and serve with grace, leaving lasting impressions on us all. West Bloomfield wouldn’t be the same without them.

Let’s not wait for a holiday to say thanks. A call, a note or even a few simple words can go a long way. After all, appreciation is one gift that never goes out of style.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact. No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

“Thanks

-Jessica Persichini,

Florals and Fruit

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

LIP SERVICE

With P.U.R.E. LIP, Maria Bland has created a legacy of beauty, family and empowerment.

Maria Bland, founder of P.U.R.E. LIP, with her daughter Kennedi.

In the dynamic world of beauty, Maria Bland is making waves with her brand of lip gloss, P.U.R.E. LIP, a company she founded alongside her three daughters, Kennedi, Cameron and Cachet. Driven by a desire to create high-quality, safe lip products, Bland’s journey is one of passion, perseverance and empowerment.

When Bland’s youngest daughter, Cameron, then 16, voiced her frustration with the lip gloss options available on the market, she sparked the idea for P.U.R.E. LIP.

“My girls were constantly mixing Carmex with dollar-store lip gloss to get the hydration they needed with the shine they wanted,” Bland says. “Cameron asked me, ‘Can we make our own?’ and that was the start of everything.”

Rather than settling for pre-made formulations, Bland and her daughters embarked on a mission to create their own. They experimented with natural ingredients, researching and testing until they perfected a vegan, cruelty-free and luxurious formula.

“We wanted something that not only looked beautiful but also nurtured and protected lips,” Bland says.

BUILDING A BRAND WITH A PURPOSE

Founded in 2020, amid the global pandemic, P.U.R.E. LIP — standing for Perfection Under Raw Elegance — was more than just a business venture: It was a statement.

Painting by Margaret Meyer Haight.

“We wanted to show that beauty is personal, and every woman deserves to feel confident and radiant in her own way,” Bland says.

The brand offers 16 stunning gloss shades designed for everyday wear and glamour alike, complemented by six lip pencils for definition. (Bland has created gloss for every shade of lip. Explore them all at shoppurelip.com.) Each product is carefully crafted with nourishing ingredients to promote lip health.

“Mother Nature is our inspiration,” Bland says. “We focus on sustainability, safety and style to ensure that everyone can indulge in beauty without compromise.”

THE POWER OF FAMILY IN BUSINESS

Working with family can be both rewarding and challenging, but for Bland, it’s an integral part of P.U.R.E. LIP’s success.

“It’s an incredible experience to build something with my daughters,” she says. “They see firsthand the dedication and resilience it takes to create and sustain a business.”

At its core, P.U.R.E. LIP is about more than just cosmetics — it’s about confidence and empowerment.

“Lip gloss is that one extra thing that makes women feel put together, whether they’re heading to work, school or a big event,” Bland says. “It’s a small but powerful tool that enhances natural beauty and boosts confidence.”

Through partnerships with major brands like Toyota and Lexus and events such as the Women of Power Summit, P.U.R.E. LIP is reaching a wide audience.

“About 1,800 women from across the world came to this year’s Summit in Las Vegas,” Bland says. “They were from all different

Inspired by art, driven by passion — P.U.R.E. LIP brings beauty to life, one shade at a time.

industries — automotive, healthcare, finance. Together, they share their journeys about their careers, their paths and the things that they’ve done. But we were in those swag bags, and it was exciting to see the reactions.”

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS

For those looking to start their own business, Bland emphasizes the importance of planning and persistence.

“Write down your ideas, stay connected with your community and talk to people who have done it before,” she says. “Starting P.U.R.E. LIP wasn’t easy, but having a clear vision and a strong support system made all the difference.”

As P.U.R.E. LIP continues to expand, Bland remains dedicated to empowering and uplifting women.

“Our community flourishes when we uplift each other,” she says. “It’s essential that we stay connected and actively support one another to foster growth. That’s why we’re here — building, engaging and ensuring that our community not only thrives today but sustains itself for the future.”

HOW GABBY ROSELY TRANSFORMED DISAPPOINTMENT INTO A CAREER EMPOWERING OTHERS.

A True Champion

Known for her enthusiasm and inspiration, Gabby Rosely (gabbyrosely.com) is a much sought-after mentor, speaker and event/retreat planner. She also shares her talents on her podcast, facilitating discussions on leadership, communication, mental health and stress management.

However, this was not the career Rosely envisioned having in her youth. We spoke to her about how a significant change to her plans brought her to the life she has now.

YOU WERE A CHAMPION SWIMMER IN HIGH SCHOOL?

I was. I grew up swimming, including on the team at Walled Lake Northern High School. I briefly swam in college at the University of California, San Diego, and then I blew out my shoulder during my first swim meet.

HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD?

It was tough. I had to walk through the fire to get to the other side. This was my first identity crisis when I no longer identified as a swimmer, something that had defined me for most of my life. I had to discover who I was outside of the sport. It involved many tears and much experimentation. I even dropped out of college for a semester and moved back home to Michigan.

I took my time reflecting inward and spending time with myself while exploring new activities and hobbies. This led me to start my first business, a learn-to-swim program. I had to genuinely take what I knew and loved and translate it into a different language, or rather, a different song. Swimming was still a part of my life at that point but from a different perspective. I ventured out in that way, tried it and loved it. It grew, I experienced a lot of success, and I found my way on the entrepreneurial journey from there.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO THE PROFESSIONAL COACHING FIELD?

After opening the Goldfish Swim School in West Bloomfield with a great team, we benefitted from coaching by Strength Advisors. This experience helped us understand our strengths and how to leverage them for effective teamwork, fulfillment and success. It transformed my personal and professional life.

During this time, I was invited to speak on a women's inspiration network by a member of the West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce. After my speaking engagement, Linda Charter, currently the vice president of the Chamber, reached out to me and requested that I become her mentor. She became my first coaching client. I said yes before I was ready and then figured it out. I just followed the call.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNED?

The biggest lesson I've learned as an entrepreneur is to say yes before you're ready. Know what you want to do and then figure it out. When Linda called me, I researched but also focused on my strengths and what people seek my advice for. I experimented with different packages, outlines and practices, tailoring the program to her needs. It was a co-creation process, and that's the beauty of my work — it's collaborative.

Community and self-connection are very important to me. My mission in this life is to create community and bring people together. This requires a deep self-connection, which I then share with others by fostering genuine interactions.

SPREAD SPECTACULAR

TRANSFORM YOUR MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION INTO AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE WITH A STUNNING CHARCUTERIE BOARD

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s time to go beyond traditional gifts and express your love with a feast for the senses. Create a captivating and vibrant charcuterie board that brings together a symphony of sweet and savory delights, edible rosettes and an array of delectable treats that are as pleasing to the eyes as they are to the palate.

CONTINUED >

At the heart of this spectacular spread, a bouquet of floral offerings takes center stage featuring assorted chocolate florets, delicate white rose wafers, and salami and cheese blossoms. Perfectly crafted and delicious, they establish the visual and gastronomic theme for the entire display. Accompanying the spread are glasses adorned with edible floral rims, beckoning you to sip and savor the essence of spring; dried lavender, marigold, rose, lemon peel and lily garnishes provide vibrancy and are entirely edible. Elevate the visual appeal with rosefolded napkins and a sprinkle of seasonal flowers atop layers of fresh greenery.

Complement your floral artistry with a curated variety of cheeses, prosciutto, colorful olives, fresh blueberries and strawberries, and candied oranges. Fragrant rosemary bread is perfectly paired with choice preserves, honey and olive oil.

Extend the creative flair to pastries, introducing a variety of shapes, colors and textures. Citrus-infused sugar cookies, raspberry tarts, mini strawberry Belgian waffles and salted caramels are visually alluring and add an extra layer of delight to the overall presentation.

The beauty of crafting a charcuterie board lies in its versatility – an opportunity to showcase your thoughtfulness and create an experience tailored to your loved ones. Consider swapping chocolates for macarons, experiment with your own garden herbs and infuse your spread with unique seasonal and local flavors.  A charcuterTEA is a delightful way to make your mother feel extra special. Simply fill a teacup with her favorite confections and unique flavor combinations for an individual experience of love and gratitude.
