It's Easy Being Green HEALING NATURALLY WITH LEA HODGES OF GREEN DR CBD
Lea Hodges’ goal is to help people heal naturally. Lea, one of the owners of Green Dr CBD on Pontiac Trail in Walled Lake, was inspired to start the business by “a desire to shift people away from their medicine cabinets.” CBD, or cannabidiol, is a substance derived from hemp plants that many believe offers numerous health benefits. Along with her husband Paul, Lea saw an opportunity to bring the benefits of CBD to the local community, and the pair opened Green Dr CBD in 2021. In the shop, Lea and Paul offer a number of products containing non-GMO, 100% organic CBD sourced directly from premium full-spectrum hemp. According to Lea, CBD is best known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. “This makes CBD very helpful in alleviating stubborn pains that aren’t always remedied by over-the-counter NSAIDS or even prescription medications,” says Lea. In addition to its pain-reducing properties, she continues, “CBD is also suggested to reduce anxiety and stress. This in turn promotes healthy sleep that can leave you feeling energized and refreshed.”

At Green Dr CBD, says Lea, “we offer a variety of gummies and tinctures that target specific concerns such as low energy levels, poor mood, insomnia, and chronic pain.” The Trifecta Gummy is one of Green Dr’s best-selling edibles. “It uses a blend of cannabinoids to promote pain relief,” notes Lea. For those who prefer a topical option, Green Dr CBD carries “carefully crafted topicals”, such as their Xtremex 4000mg CBD Rub, which “works to deliver fast-acting pain relief,” says Lea. When trying CBD for the first time, Lea offers some advice. “If we could give a word of advice to novices,” she says, “it would be that we all process CBD differently.” Since the strength, formula, and method of consumption can affect the result, Lea continues, “we encourage our customers to experiment with their CBD, and we offer custom-made products to suit your individual needs.” Humans aren’t Green Dr’s only customers. Green Dr CBD also carries a range of full-spectrum CBD products for pets, including treats, tinctures, and balms. CBD may help anxious pets feel calmer, especially in stressful situations such as long car rides or during fireworks. In addition to products for dogs, Green Dr also carries a tincture for cats that can also ease chronic pain and reduce inflammation. Our founder, Treger Strasberg, started this nonprofit in 2009 when she befriended a woman who had been at a shelter with her two children after fleeing domestic violence. Treger helped this woman get an apartment and was delighted to be able to have such a huge impact on their lives. What she admits she had never thought about at the time was that this woman had literally nothing to put in that apartment. When she stopped by to visit them, she discovered they were sleeping in nests of their coats on the bedroom floors. She was horrified and could hardly conceive that her life of privilege had shielded her from this harsh reality— that people who obtain supportive housing have next to nothing to make those four walls feel warm, functional, and dignified. Treger began asking her friends for their extra household furniture and items. Within weeks she had enough to completely furnish the apartment. However, the furniture donations kept coming. People wanted their gently used items to go to someone in need, for free. She called around to various shelters trying to find one that would take the furniture and décor items she
was finding on her porch and driveway, but none of them had a way to store the furniture or get it to the clients. She had found a gaping hole in all the combined communal responses to assisting those exiting homelessness. Treger wanted to do more. Fast forward thirteen years, and we’re proud to report that we’ve furnished and decorated over 2,552 houses and apartments, impacting over 8,048 people’s lives. In Detroit we've done over 1,466 homes, serving 4,244 people. Those who receive Humble Design’s services are three times more likely to remain housed than those from the same shelter who do not. The impact it has on stabilizing these women and children, by creating an environment that respects their dignity and worth, is enormous. Angered by the adage, “beggars can’t be choosers,” Treger was determined to shift the paradigm and treat those who were referred to our program as design clients. Each client works with a team of two part-time designers, who interview them and their children before going on to personalize, curate, design and beautifully furnish their living spaces—all in three days. Every week in the Metro Detroit area, we furnish three homes with the donated goods from the community that are dropped off at our Pontiac warehouse. We have over 20 partnering agencies that we have contracted with who are authorized to make referrals to us. There is no direct application process to receive our services. Donating your gently used household items, your time to help us sort donations in the warehouse, your time helping our Designers put together everything in the house, and your dollars are what help us fulfill our mission. Wishlist items are things not commonly donated but are highly needed by Humble Design’s families.

Follow our five tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

Hi I'm Fox! MEET AUTHOR CAROLINE KERFOOT

Local author Caroline Kerfoot has always loved rhymes. “When I was 11 years old, my parents gave me a guitar, which I taught myself to play after school. Within a few months, I began to write songs. It’s a fun challenge linguistically—like fitting pieces into a puzzle—to remain succinct in storyline while keeping meter and time.” After moving with her husband to the Walnut Lake neighborhood a few years ago, she found the inspiration for her book Hi I’m Fox! and chose to write it as a rhyming tale. While exploring her new neighborhood with her rescue dog Foxy, Caroline observed how Foxy interacted with different animals. “The spark of inspiration came when she met a turtle in our sideyard, who quickly hid in his shell,” says Caroline. “It made me think what if all the animals that this little Fox character meets are initially scared, purely because of her name? As they realize she is just a sweet little dog trying to find her way home, they befriend and help her.” With that, Hi I’m Fox! was born. Caroline hopes young readers of Hi I’m Fox! will take away the message to be kind to one another. The book is intended for ages 3-7, says Caroline, and lessons about friendship and kindness are important for this age group. “When given the choice, be kind,” she emphasizes. Hi I’m Fox! will soon be available at the Franklin Library, and West Bloomfield residents can use their library cards there. Caroline will also be visiting schools during the month of March for National Reading Month, taking part in story times. “I love be involved with the local community to help reinforce reading and creativity for little ones,” says Caroline. She works as an Art Director for Regina Andrew and loves animals, nature, reading, and of course, writing and illustrating. You can find her walking through the woods at the West Bloomfield Nature Preserve, or hard at work on her second book in the Adventures of Fox series, which is expected to be published in the spring of 2023.
