LIFESTYLE LETTER

Meet the New Publisher of West Bloomfield City Lifestyle Magazine Hi West Bloomfield! My Name is Joe Geagea, and I'm very excited to be the new Owner and Publisher of West Bloomfield City Lifestyle publication. Maria has done a fantastic job involving great content and local businesses in this publication. I want to build on her legacy and continue creating more content and local businesses in the future for our readers. I was born and raised in West Bloomfield and currently live in West Bloomfield so I'm very familiar with what a beautiful place this is to live and work. I have two beautiful kids and an amazing wife. My son is involved in local sports in West Bloomfield and I want to give back to the community. I coach a local kids basketball team and am very involved in local activities. I love the 4 seasons of Michigan and I'm an avid sports fan who supports his local teams. I love to travel and meet different cultures. My motto is: life is too short, let's just keep smiling and be happy! I'm very excited to help in any way and I'm looking forward to 2022!

DEAR YOUNGER ME, IF YOU COULD SEE WHERE I’M AT RIGHT NOW YOU WOULD SEE… Someone who loves to run! My younger self was basically allergic to exercise, and I never thought of myself as strong or capable in that way. I was convinced that some people are born athletes, and some aren’t. Once I started, just a block at a time at first, I found running to be meditative, calming, and satisfying. Although I didn’t start until my late 30s, I have run 10 marathons and even a 50 mile trail race so far.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Don’t be afraid to do something that scares you. It took me years to realize that taking a chance can be very rewarding. If you want to try, try! I was always fascinated by mountains, but afraid to do any serious hiking until we went to Half Dome in Yosemite. I almost turned back at the most terrifying part of the hike, but the view from the top was worth it!

WHAT DECISION DID YOU MAKE THAT MADE A HUGE IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? ARE YOU HAPPY OR REGRETFUL THAT YOU MADE THAT CHOICE? Years ago, I had the opportunity to move across the country for a job. I was excited for the opportunity, but in the end decided not to uproot myself and my daughter. I am glad I didn’t, because I would have missed the chance to meet my wonderful husband and the life we have together as a family.

ONE THING I WISH YOU WOULD DO... Get a dog sooner! As a child, we always had cats, and for some reason I was convinced I didn’t like dogs. It wasn’t until I met my husband, who had two dogs, that I realized what loyal, affectionate, and wonderful friends they are! Three years ago, I finally had the chance to choose another dog to adopt, and she is an absolute joy.

ONE THING I WISH YOU WOULDN’T DO... Stop sewing! In high school, I loved sewing my own clothes, and even made my own prom dress. As I got older and busier, though, I spent less and less time sewing, and for years didn’t sew at all. Once Covid came along, I suddenly needed to put those skills to work sewing masks, and while this helped me remember that I still enjoyed it, I also found I am very rusty! Fortunately, I never stopped knitting, and enjoy making hats, sweaters, and socks for myself and my family.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE NOW THAT YOU DIDN’T AS YOUNGER YOU? Naps! My younger self was too worried about missing out to indulge in a snooze, but falling asleep with a book on a sunny afternoon is one of life’s most exquisite pleasures. Maybe I’m more tired the older I get, but that’s okay.

MAKERS ARTICLE BY ART LEADERS GALLERY

Dr. Seuss

This Valentines Day celebrate the arts and your loved ones by gifting them unique work from local Art Leaders Gallery

Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, MA in 1904. He graduated Dartmouth College and attended Oxford University. He received honorary doctorates from Princeton, J.F. Kennedy University, Dartmouth and Brown University. Geisel was a Lt. Colonel in the Army in World War II. After the war he and his first wife, Helen moved from Los Angeles to La Jolla. There they built a house on 6 ½ acres next to an observation tower that eventually became part of his living room wall. Within a year of Helen’s death in 1967, Geisel married Audrey Stone Dimond, a nurse 20 years his junior, the two remained together until his death. By the time he died in 1991, he wrote and illustrated nearly 50 books. During his lifetime his books sold over 100 million copies and have been translated into 20 different languages and that number continues to rise at an accelerated rate. His book, Green Eggs and Ham, is the third largest selling book in the English language, EVER. For his writings, Dr. Seuss had been honored with a Pulitzer Prize, two Emmy awards, a Peabody and three Academy Awards, along with many other literary awards. In 1997, The Chase Group acquired exclusive worldwide rights to publish the work of Dr. Seuss as limited edition prints. Along with publishing certain book illustrations, Chase is making available editions of Seuss’s, "Secret Art". These are paintings that Geisel painted for his own pleasure and never before shown to the public and exhibit a more sophisticated, technically accomplished and quite unrestrained side to his talent.

creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver

the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an CONTINUED >

all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3%. It’s a guaranteed 100% rate of return, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Mallouk says to start with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. Trusts tend to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors

“We are planning led, meaning we get to know our clients very well prior to giving them advice. All our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance.”

are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
