LIFESTYLE LETTER

Harvest, Heritage & Home October has arrived, bringing cooler evenings, harvest season and plenty of reasons to spend time around the table. This month, we’re celebrating the people, places and flavors that make West Austin and the surrounding Hill Country such a special place to eat, drink and gather. Our pages take us from the vineyard to the farmers market and beyond. We visit Spicewood Vineyards during harvest season to see how decades of winemaking experience shape each vintage, and meet local makers who are changing the way we think about what we eat and drink. Khôra Home is creating new ways to grow fresh food close to home, while Exótico Coffee brings four generations of Guatemalan coffee heritage to Central Texas through single-origin coffees grown on the family farm. Closer to home, we spend time at Winston’s in Lakeway and Bee Cave, where coffee, pizza, wine and family-friendly spaces make it a destination throughout the day. We also highlight local patios where four-legged family members can come along, plus a few favorite businesses serving the pets who are such an important part of our homes. October also brings one of Austin’s biggest weekends of the year, with the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix returning to Circuit of The Americas. From race weekend to farmers markets, vineyard afternoons and dinners outside, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy the season. For me, fall has always been about gathering. Food and drink have a way of bringing people together, introducing us to new traditions and reminding us of the places and people we call home. I hope this issue gives you a few new places to try, people to meet and reasons to enjoy October in West Austin.

Harvest brings an entire growing season into focus. Grapes that have spent months developing on the vine are picked and moved into the winery, where a new vintage begins. For Spicewood Vineyards, that process starts with the land and decisions made long before harvest. Original owners Ed and Madeline Manigold studied the property before planting. Soil analysis identified three distinct soil types, helping determine which grape varieties suited different areas. Nine acres from the original 17-acre planting remain in production, with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo among the varieties grown today. Established in 1992, Spicewood describes its vineyard management philosophy as “hands in the dirt,” a fitting description for growing wine grapes in Texas. Frost, hail and searing heat are among the challenges, and no two seasons arrive the same way. The 2026 growing season made that unpredictability clear. A late-March freeze struck the Texas Hill Country during bud break, with temperatures falling into the 20s. Owner and President Ron Yates reported that the freeze devastated the majority of Spicewood’s estate vineyards and that the winery expects to harvest very little Hill Country fruit this year. For the 2026 vintage, Spicewood will rely on grapes from the Texas High Plains, far West Texas and Dell Valley. A vintage is more than the year printed on a label. It reflects a growing season and the conditions the grapes experienced before entering the cellar. Spicewood’s estate vineyard remains central to its story, while relationships with growers across Texas provide access to additional varieties and regions. One grape, however, has particular significance to Yates. Tempranillo holds a special place in his approach to Texas wine. Yates grew up in Kingsland, near Fall Creek Vineyards in Tow, owned by his cousins Ed and Susan Auler, pioneers of the Texas wine industry. His interest in wine deepened while studying at the University of Texas, when a semester abroad took him to Spain. Time in Ribera del Duero introduced Yates to a major Tempranillogrowing region. The son of his host family grew grapes there, giving Yates time in the vineyards to learn about viticulture. When he returned to Texas, he recognized similarities between Ribera del Duero and the Hill Country, particularly limestone bedrock and hot days, and became convinced Tempranillo had potential in Texas. 15

That connection remains visible in Spicewood’s wines. The winery calls Tempranillo its favorite grape to grow and says the variety “absolutely thrives in our Texas terroir.” Its current portfolio also includes Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Grenache and other Texas-grown wines. Those wines have earned recognition in major competitions. At the London-based Decanter World Wine Awards, which draws more than 17,000 entries from around the world, Spicewood’s 2022 Las Montañas Tempranillo earned Gold, becoming one of the first four Texas wines to receive the honor. At the 2026 Houston Rodeo Uncorked! International Wine Competition, Spicewood’s 2022 Tempranillo from Dutton Vineyards received Gold, Reserve Class Champion and Texas Class Champion honors. Its 2023 Cabernet Franc earned Gold and Texas Class Champion. Yates acquired Spicewood Vineyards in 2007 and remains directly involved in day-to-day operations and vineyard management while working closely with the winemaking team. Spicewood was founded as a winery devoted exclusively to estate-grown grapes. Although sourcing has expanded, growing grapes and making wine on the same property remain part of its identity. The approximately 5,000-square-foot winery spans two levels, with production downstairs alongside a Texas limestone barrel room and the tasting room above. Spicewood reports production capacity of more than 5,000 cases annually.

“ We t a ke t h e cu lt ivat ion of our grapes, the creat ion of our incredible Te x a s w i n e , and the enjoyment of a sh ared love of vino, very s e r i o u s l y .” The winery’s Estate Tempranillo has been produced entirely from estate-grown fruit, while other Tempranillo bottlings have used grapes from the Texas High Plains. Spicewood also works with growers across Texas, allowing the winery to source fruit from multiple regions while remaining committed to Texas-grown grapes. Each parcel reflects months of farming before fermentation begins. Ripeness, weather and vineyard conditions influence the decisions that follow in the cellar. Eventually, that work reaches the tasting room, where visitors experience the finished vintage in the glass. Spicewood offers tastings seven days a week, along with wines by the glass and bottle. Guests can settle into the tasting room or take their wine outside to spacious patios and picnic areas surrounded by the Hill Country landscape. Harvest gives that visit added context. Vines planted during the vineyard’s early years remain in production, fruit from another growing season enters the winery and bottles from previous vintages are opened upstairs. Seeing those stages in one place is a reminder that wine begins as agriculture. Spicewood’s history spans more than three decades of Texas grape growing. Its early soil studies shaped the vineyard, Yates’ experience in Spain brought Tempranillo into sharper focus, and relationships with growers across Texas continue to broaden the fruit entering the cellar. Spicewood describes its philosophy simply: “Wine is a celebration of life.” During harvest, months of work in the vineyard become the starting point for bottles that will eventually be opened around a table. One vintage may already be in the glass, but another is just beginning. Sip Texas wine in the heart of the Hill Country at Spicewood Vineyards, 1419 Co Rd 409, Spicewood, TX 78669, then explore current releases, shop wines and plan your visit at SpicewoodVineyards.com.

ARTICLE BY STEVEN VALENTIN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WINSTON’S LAKEWAY

Meet Me at Winston’s A Place For Every Part Of The Day Winston’s at Lakeway is built around a simple idea: good food and drink should fit easily into everyday life. The original Winston’s location brings together a neighborhood café, drive-thru, playground and extended outdoor gathering space, creating a place that works for everything from a quick coffee run to an unhurried family meal. It is designed to carry guests from morning through evening without asking them to choose between convenience and time spent together. The menu follows that same all-day approach. Winston’s serves locally roasted coffee alongside breakfast tacos made fresh in-house, sourdough toasts, pastries, juices, smoothies and açaí bowls. Later in the day, the menu expands to salads, burrata and woodfired Neapolitan pizza. Winston’s notes that its menu changes seasonally, with the most current offerings available in the café. Pizza takes center stage after noon. The Margherita is made with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, Pecorino Romano and extra-virgin olive oil, while other current options include pepperoni, prosciutto and arugula,

truffle, veggie and meat lovers pizzas. Starters such as Caprese salad and several burrata dishes offer easy options for sharing. Guests can also pair lunch or dinner with draft beer or a selection of sparkling, rosé, white and red wines. Part of Winston’s appeal is how many different kinds of visits can happen in the same place. A morning coffee can be a quick drive-thru stop or an excuse to stay awhile. Breakfast can turn into time at the playground, while an afternoon visit can stretch into pizza and drinks as the day winds down. The original Lakeway café is complemented by The Barn at Winston’s Lakeway, an extended outdoor space next door with a covered patio, extensive play equipment, draft beer, wine and plenty of seating. That flexibility gives Winston’s a distinctly neighborhood feel. Parents can settle in while children play, friends can meet over coffee or lunch, and families can return later for pizza. The combination of café favorites, wood-fired pizza and outdoor space allows the experience to change with the time of day while keeping the atmosphere casual and approachable.

“One Res taurant . Three Unique Spaces. Same great vibe.”

Pizza takes center stage at Winston’s at Lakeway in the afternoon.

Lakeway is where Winston’s began, but the concept has since expanded. Its newest location at Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave brings Winston’s all-day approach to the main green, with a pizza bar and plenty of outdoor seating. Its all-day format also makes Winston’s easy to return to for different occasions, from breakfast on the go and lunch with friends to an evening outside with pizza and drinks. The playground,

patio seating and The Barn next door give families and groups plenty of room to make the visit their own. For a morning coffee, a family afternoon or pizza and wine at the end of the day, make Winston’s part of your routine in Lakeway or Bee Cave. Explore the current menu and plan your next stop at WinstonsATX.com.

Grow What You Love FRESH FOOD, COMMUNITY CONNECTION AND A NEW WAY TO GROW WITH KHÔRA HOME. ARTICLE BY MICHELLE WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF KHÔRA HOME

Khôra Home is bringing a new approach to local food production to Central Texas, combining growing technology, small-batch products and a focus on community. Avi Moskovitz, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Khôra Home, shares the inspiration behind the company, what sets its products apart and how being rooted in Central Texas shapes what they create. The company’s soil-based growing system is designed to make it easier for people to grow fresh food at home while creating opportunities to share and sell surplus locally. That same philosophy carries into Khôra Home’s own products, including microgreen vinaigrettes made with nutrient-dense ingredients grown in Texas.

“IT’S A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN FOOD SYSTEM WHERE NEIGHBORS GROW TOGETHER, SHARE ABUNDANCE, BUILD TINY LOCAL BUSINESSES, AND REDUCE OUR DEPENDENCY ON GLOBAL SHIPPING OF FOOD.” WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS, AND HOW DID YOUR SIGNATURE PRODUCT COME TO BE?

Khôra Home began with a simple conviction: we must change the way we get access to fresh, healthy food. Trust in mass-produced food keeps slipping, prices keep climbing, supply chains fail, and America has lost roughly five million farms since 1935, which includes plenty right here in Texas. I decided to solve this problem not just for Texans but potentially the world. Khôra Home gives everyday people the ability to grow what they love, enjoy what they want, and sell their surplus locally through an integrated marketplace built around farmers markets and local producers.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS UNIQUE, AND WHAT INGREDIENTS, TECHNIQUES, OR TRADITIONS ARE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO HOW YOU MAKE THEM?

Every ingredient we use begins as a plant that’s deliberately chosen, hand-planted, hand-seeded, and transplanted, then grown in organic Texas soil without chemicals ever touching the plants, using Khôra Home technology. We’re not interested in growing the same old familiar items found in any local grocery store. We plant unusual varieties that bring surprising flavor or nutrition to the table, the kind that turns an ordinary bite into a genuinely different experience.

HOW DOES BEING A LOCAL CENTRAL TEXAS MAKER INFLUENCE WHAT YOU CREATE AND THE INGREDIENTS YOU USE?

Being based here means we get to build our dreams with other Austin-area makers who care about the same thing we do, which is real, differentiated, and elevated food. That’s why you’ll find HighVibe LIMITLESS 10 Mushroom Blend layered into what we make, adding its own depth, function, and character. Explore Khôra Home’s locally grown products at KhoraMarketplace.com.

Daniel and Adriana Meza, Exótico Coffee Co-Founders, connect Central Texas to their Guatemalan farm.

Exótico Coffee was born from a desire to share a piece of our heritage with the community we now call home. My husband and I both grew up on coffee farms in Guatemala, surrounded by a culture where coffee was more than a crop; it was a way of life. We both come from four generations of coffee farmers and coffee machinery builders, so coffee has always been deeply woven into our lives.

What makes your products unique, and what ingredients, techniques, or traditions are especially important to how you make them?

We don’t just source our coffee; we grow it. Every coffee we offer comes directly from our family farm in Guatemala, giving us complete traceability and stewardship over every stage of its journey, from the seed in the nursery to the cup in your hands.

From Acatenango to Austin

What inspired you to start your business, and how did your signature product come to be?

Our coffee is grown on the slopes of two of Guatemala’s most iconic volcanoes: Acatenango and the active Volcán de Fuego. Every coffee cherry is picked entirely by hand, and only when it has reached peak ripeness.

What do you enjoy most about sharing your products at local farmers markets and connecting directly with the community?

One of the most rewarding parts of being at local farmers markets is seeing curiosity turn into appreciation. Many people stop by simply looking for a cup of coffee, but they leave having learned something new about where coffee comes from, how it’s grown, or why one varietal tastes different from another. Coffee is deeply ingrained in our culture. Bringing it to West Austin feels like bringing a piece of home with us and sharing that culture with our community. Learn more about Exótico Coffee, its single-origin microlots and upcoming markets at Exotico.Coffee.

WHAT HIGH-NET-WORTH INVESTORS ARE REVIEWING IN 2026 TO REDUCE TAXABLE GAINS AND INCOME TAX Markets remain near highs. Investor liquidity events are creating large tax bills.

In 2026, many high-net-worth investors are facing significant taxable gains from appreciated stock portfolios, business liquidity events, real estate sales, and concentrated positions. At Old Vine Capital, we help families, business owners, and qualified investors evaluate tax-aware strategies as part of a broader fiduciary wealth management plan — coordinated with each client’s CPA and legal advisors. Tax-aware strategies investors are reviewing include: • Custom long/short equity indexing designed to track a passive equity benchmark while increasing opportunities for tax-loss harvesting that may help offset realized stock, real estate, or business capital gains. • Investment real estate depreciation, including cost segregation and bonus depreciation, which may create deductions for qualifying real estate investors and real estate professionals. • Qualified purchaser alternative funds that may target differentiated or less-correlated returns, with certain structures potentially passing through deductible expenses or losses.

• Solo 401(k) and retirement plan design for business owners and entrepreneurs seeking to contribute meaningful amounts to tax-deferred or Roth accounts, depending on income and plan structure. • Charitable planning with appreciated securities, including donor-advised funds or other giving strategies that may reduce concentrated positions and support long-term philanthropic goals. What Sets Old Vine Capital Apart • Independent, fee-only Registered Investment Advisor • Fiduciary advice with no commissions or proprietary products • Custom tax-aware portfolios held at Charles Schwab • Strategies for concentrated stock, business owners, real estate investors, and complex wealth • Access to alternative strategies where appropriate for qualified clients Tax-aware investing is not about avoiding tax at all costs. It is about making better decisions before gains are realized.
