Elevating, Celebrating & Uplifting Women
A few days ago, a friend shared a quote with me: "When women support each other, incredible things happen." This quote serves as a beautiful reminder of the important role that women play in our lives. Our mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and the many women we encounter have a significant and lasting impact on us. Their presence is a guiding light, offering support, wisdom, and love.
Reflecting on this, my thoughts turn to my own mother, a woman of extraordinary resilience and love, who has been the foundation of my life. Her consistent support and guidance have shaped my values and aspirations. Her life story, one of determination and embracing life’s challenges with grace, continues to inspire me.
As Mother's Day approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to mothers. Yet, it's important to also recognize the mother figures in our lives. These are the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors who contribute positively to our communities and leave a memorable mark on us. This Mother’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate not only as a mother or with your mother but to reflect on all the influential women who have guided you. I encourage you to reach out to the inspiring women in your life. A simple message, phone call, or video chat can make a world of difference and show them how much they are appreciated and loved.
Let's also direct our support toward local businesses and organizations that positively influence our community, with a special focus on those led by women in West Austin. I take immense pride in connecting with and advocating for the extraordinary women here, who are leaders and catalysts for positive growth and progress. Their collective efforts play an important role in building a foundation of support and beauty that reflects the spirit of West Austin.
Here's to celebrating West Austin's women,

THE UGLI MISSION IS TO END BULLYING. FOREVER.
FOUNDATION The UGLI
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE UGLI FOUNDATIONThe UGLI Foundation, founded by Angela Garcia, has become an influential advocate in our community’s stand against bullying. With previous experience as an on-air broadcaster working for FOX Sports, NBC, the Golf Channel, and a host of her own radio show on Sirius XM, Angela aims to shed light on the gravity of bullying and to promote constructive steps we can take together. The foundation has redefined the meaning of “UGLI” to represent the best in each person: Unique, Gifted, Loved, Individual.
Addressing the complexities of bullying and cyberbullying in schools, the UGLI Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to collaborating with partners to promote anti-bullying measures, adhering to the anti-bullying standards mandated by Texas for educational settings. The foundation’s plan includes educational initiatives, the formation of UGLI Clubs in schools, and the development of UGLI Ambassadors, who are empowered to oppose bullying and spread positivity.
“UGLI is a tool we will use to take action now so future generations can live a reality filled with love and encouragement,” Angela says. The foundation’s UGLI Clubs provide a tangible means for educators and parents committed for change to put this vision into action. It’s about lifting each other up, standing against bullying, being kind, celebrating what makes each of us different, and making sure no one feels left out.
Interested schools can reach out to the foundation at Info@TheUGLIFoundation.org for guidance on setting up an UGLI Club tailored to their school’s unique needs. For our West Austin parents and locals, let’s demonstrate to our children the power of community and the impact of kindness. Your commitment can be made official by taking the pledge at TheUGLIFoundation.org/Pledge
“Imagine a world where we’re all kind to each other.”
Joining the UGLI Foundation on social media at @TheUGLIFoundation connects you to a broader collective of individuals dedicated to ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for all children. Together, we can end bullying—one act of kindness at a time.
Match Game, Set,
Building on its inaugural success, the 2024 ATX Open has not only elevated Austin’s profile on the global tennis map but has also fostered a deeper connection between the city and the sport. The ATX Open tournament, with its mix of entertaining matches and community-focused events, created an exciting atmosphere that connected with Austin’s identity as an up and coming sports city. As one of the select few women’s-only tour-level tennis tournaments in the country, and the largest women’s professional sporting event in Austin, the ATX Open stood out as a shining example of female athletic ability and empowerment.
One of the most talked-about features of this year’s tournament was the blend of international competition and local culture. The ATX Open served as a stage for local athletes to shine, with players like Fernanda Contreras, a two-time state champion from Westlake High School, along with former UT NCAA champion Peyton Stearns and current and soon-to-be Longhorns Sabina Zeynalova and Maya Joint, capturing the hearts of the home crowd. Their participation demonstrated the tournament’s role in nurturing homegrown talent and providing them with a platform to compete against some of the best in the world. The inclusion of Austin’s own in such a prestigious event bolstered local support and sent an inspiring message to young athletes across the city about the heights they can achieve.
Credit: Alex Smith/ATX Open Credit: ATX OpenA highlight of the social calendar was the celebrated Ladies’ Day, hosted inside Westwood Country Club. Over 200 women attended this groundbreaking event, enjoying drinks, brunch, and tennis, with WTA stars Anastasija Sevastova and Darja Semenistaja stopping by for a Q&A session and photos with attendees. Sponsored by Cadillac, Love You More, Lucky in Love, Queen of the Court, and Collette’s Mini Donut Cakes, Ladies’ Day allowed guests to connect and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of tour-level tennis and social mingling.
The tournament’s singles competition was a historic moment, marking a significant milestone in tennis history. Yuan Yue’s victory over Wang Xiyu in the final, 6–4, 7–6, not only earned her the singles tennis title at the 2024 ATX Open but also her first WTA Tour title. This final was noteworthy as the first all-Chinese final at a tournament outside of Asia since the 2006 Estoril Open. Playing against her longtime friend Xiyu Wang, Yuan Yue showcased her resilience and determination, needing seven opportunities to secure her first tournament title, in a match that exemplified the competitive spirit and high stakes of the ATX Open.
In the doubles arena, the tournament also concluded with a thrilling finale. The team of Olivia Gadecki and Olivia Nicholls triumphed over Katarzyna Kawa and Bibiane Schoofs with a score of 6-2, 6-4 to claim the championship. This victory not only crowned them as the doubles champions but also highlighted the depth of talent and the dynamic nature of the competition.
“The ATX Open stands as a shining example of female athletic ability and empowerment.”
As the ATX Open continues to grow and evolve, it’s become clear that the tournament is more than just a week of tennis; it’s a dynamic showcase that captures Austin’s vibrant energy. With its mix of competitive sports, community involvement, and cultural festivities, the ATX Open stands out as a top-tier event for both locals and visitors. It has become a significant catalyst in promoting tennis and nurturing a sense of unity and pride within the community.
Looking forward, the ATX Open is poised to become a highlight of the tennis season and a cornerstone event defining Austin’s fast-growing sporting and cultural scene. Continuing to attract world-class talent, spotlight local rising stars, and offer innovative experiences like lively entertainment and engaging fan activations, next year’s event promises thrilling tennis action and unforgettable experiences right here in the heart of Texas.
Don’t miss any of the exciting updates for the ATX Open’s return in 2025! Tennis fans and Austin locals alike are encouraged to follow the ATX Open on social media: @ATXOpen on Twitter, @ATXOpen on Instagram, and @ATXOpenTennis on Facebook for the latest news, announcements, and ticket information for next year’s tournament. Society Little Black Dress
MEET KATE MAYER: TURNING ADVERSITY INTO LEGACY WITH THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS SOCIETY OF THE LAKE TRAVIS AREA
Kate Mayer’s journey to Texas is an inspiring story of resilience, marked by her founding of the Little Black Dress Society of The Lake Travis Area, a tribute to her mother’s philanthropic spirit.
“You have so many people, like myself, who have moved here from all over the country. I found that the women here are looking for friends just like I was, and I realized this group could help so many feel connected to this area.”
How has your journey to Texas shaped the evolution of the Little Black Dress Society?
My mother has always been my inspiration. Audrey Hepburn was someone we both admired. We used to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s together, and I treasure those memories. When I lost my mother in 2015 to cancer, her dying words were to go to Austin, to be near my only child and his beautiful family. So I came to Austin in 2016 and restarted my insurance career at Whorton Insurance in the Lakeway/Bee Cave area, but I missed my friends. I was lonely at times, so the Little Black Dress Society was born in February of 2020 and the rest is history. We are at 386 members today and growing!
What inspires the selection of themes for your events, such as the “Tribute to Toby Keith” and “Welcome to Barbie World”?
Picking the themes can be inspired by local or national events. We are in an economic struggle in this country right now and just need a little red, white, and blue to make us smile. Last year, we did the Barbie event, which was about empowering women. I also have a wonderful Little Black Dress Society team. My right-hand is Janice Rodriguez; she and I are great friends and party planners extraordinaire!
What advice would you offer someone who is looking to start a new chapter in their life?
Stay strong and persevere. God doesn’t give you anything you cannot handle.
How do you envision the society contributing to the wider community?
We aspire to do more and give more. Currently, we are exploring ideas for our Christmas Give Back initiative, which could involve contributing to a local charity or supporting a single mom in dire need. I encourage you to become a member and learn more. Follow us on Facebook at “Little Black Dress Society of The Lake Travis Area“.
West Austin City Lifestyle recently hosted a St. Pawtrick’s Day party at Pinthouse Brewing. This fun event benefited Save An Angel, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization on a mission to combat pet overpopulation, increase pet retention, and create a compassionate and safe community for pets and people.
Attendees enjoyed vendor booths, a dog costume contest, and Pinthouse award-winning beer and amazing food. Exciting raffle prizes from M Robinson Fine Jewelers, Kendra Scott, Barkin’ Creek Dog Kitchen & Bath, and more, all supported Save An Angel.
Violet Crown Veterinary Specialists, a proud local sponsor, shared why they got involved, “It’s imperative that we contribute to our community, as our profession is closely connected with the well-being of the people and pets we serve. Despite the challenges, we are proud to support pets and their owners in times of need.”
Claire Smith of Little Acorns Photography and Parker Conley from Remote Team Films captured the event’s festive atmosphere. “I love meeting new people, learning about them, and chatting. My profession allows me to work closely with various community members, offering opportunities to network and be an important part of it,” Claire said. Building on this, Parker shared, “Giving back is a
way of expressing gratitude and ensuring that the community remains strong and vibrant, which in turn benefits everyone.”
Together, we extend our gratitude to all who contributed to making St. Pawtrick’s Day a bark-worthy celebration of community, love, and support. Thank you to everyone, including Pinthouse Brewing, TXB Stores, Homescape Pets, Bone2Dome, Guau Guau, Sunflower Dog Care, Shape Method, Texas Tipsy Tours, Mazie Days, Coco Coquette, Moments By Summer, Kim Ortiz Portrait Art, and Viva Day Spa + Med Spa.

PINTHOUSE
DESIGN for All PARTNERSHIP
The Design for All Partnership aims to offer realistic and affordable design solutions that align with an organization’s mission. Maija Kreishman, AIA, Principal at Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (MHOA), shares insights on the firm’s Design for All initiative, which provides $20,000 in pro-bono design and consultation services.
WHAT INSPIRED THE DESIGN FOR ALL PARTNERSHIP?
One of our associates brought this idea to us a few years ago. There are so many wonderful organizations serving our communities that can benefit from design services, but their resources are limited, especially as Austin and Houston continue to grow.
COULD YOU SHARE SOME INSIGHTS INTO THE NONPROFIT SELECTION PROCESS?
What we look for is a project and an organization that can benefit the most from our services. In other words, we want the scope and the scale of the project to be something that the partnership can have a real impact on.
HOW CAN WEST AUSTIN LOCALS SUPPORT THE MISSION OF THE DESIGN FOR ALL PARTNERSHIP?
At this stage in the process, getting the word out to nonprofit organizations that might need design services. We want to reach as many groups as possible. Applications are due May 3rd!
An annual seed program, supporting community-driven partners through design.
