There is something magical about the world as seen through the eyes of a child or experienced alongside a cherished pet. Their pure hearts have a special way of reminding us of the simple pleasures in life. They spark our imaginations, inspire us to live in the present moment, and reveal the beauty that can be found in even the smallest gestures.
Growing up with my Shetland Sheepdog, Lovely, was a special experience. She became my loyal companion, my playmate, and my confidant. From the moment my family welcomed her into my childhood home, she taught me important values such as responsibility, compassion, and kindness. As we both grew older, our connection deepened, and I realized the profound impact Lovely had on my life. As we embrace the changing seasons and the excitement of a new school year, let's not forget the invaluable life lessons that our faithful four-legged companions have taught us.
In this issue, we proudly highlight nonprofit organizations, businesses, and locals who are dedicated to supporting the well-being and development of our youth and pets. Their meaningful contributions and the positive impact they have on the lives of our children and furry companions are inspiring. From mentoring programs and educational initiatives to animal rescue efforts and pet-friendly establishments, these individuals and organizations create a nurturing environment where children and pets can thrive. We invite you to join us on a heartfelt exploration of the stories and initiatives that make West Austin a family-friendly community.
Wishing you a month filled with love, laughter, and treasured moments with those you love most! Cheers!

CREATING A STYLISH AND FUNCTIONAL HOME FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AND PETS
Creating a stylish and functional home while accommodating the needs of children and pets can be a challenge. Fortunately, homeowners can find guidance and expertise from Laura Jenkins, an interior designer and co-owner of Sicara Design, who brings valuable firsthand experience as a mother of two young children.
CAN YOU SHARE SOME PRACTICAL TIPS OR STRATEGIES FOR INCORPORATING CHILD-FRIENDLY AND PET-FRIENDLY ELEMENTS INTO INTERIOR DESIGN?
One effective approach is to utilize textures and patterns to hide spills and stains. By selecting performance fabrics and using non-toxic stain removers like Organic Chix, you can ensure that your space remains both visually appealing and easy to maintain.
WHEN CREATING A FAMILY-FRIENDLY SPACE, ARE THERE SPECIFIC MATERIALS, FURNITURE, OR ACCESSORIES THAT YOU RECOMMEND?
I always recommend opting for non-toxic materials in family spaces.
ARE THERE ANY EXCITING TRENDS OR INNOVATIVE IDEAS IN THE FIELD OF INTERIOR DESIGN FOR FAMILIES WITH KIDS AND/OR PETS?
I think sustainable design is finally on the rise and catching the attention of many. People are more savvy to eco-friendly materials and where they are sourcing things from. I find that many clients want to invest in pieces that they feel good about on the whole, pieces that will last a lifetime and provide a timeless element in their homes.

Lake Travis Education Foundation (LTEF) has been a driving force in Lake Travis ISD (LTISD), ensuring exceptional education for all students through strategic partnerships and vital fundraising. With avenues for involvement like volunteering and sponsorships, LTEF empowers teachers and students to succeed. Last year, 101 grants were awarded, enhancing learning and achievements. Additionally, 29 scholarships were granted to outstanding LTHS graduates. In this interview with Amy Thomas, Director of Corporate Relations for LTISD & LTEF, we explore the inspiring evolution of the LTEF Gala, the auction item selection process, and celebrate LTEF’s dedication to a brighter future for Lake Travis.
MW: CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ROLE AND HOW LAKE TRAVIS EDUCATION FOUNDATION (LTEF) HAS IMPACTED THE COMMUNITY OVER THE YEARS?
AT: My role as the Director of Corporate Relations for LTISD & LTEF involves actively engaging with the Lake Travis community. This allows me to connect local businesses and individuals with the needs in our schools.
Lake Travis ISD is united with the passion of educating all students using a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes scholastic excellence. LTEF raises money to provide financial
resources to support exemplary education. We achieve this by forming partnerships with local businesses, parents, and the community. Partnering with LTEF can involve volunteering time, attending an event, sponsoring and advertising, donating auction items or in-kind goods and services, and giving monetary gifts, including stocks and appreciation, crypto currency (in process), and planned gifts such as a will or living trust.
MW: WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF THE ANNUAL LTEF GALA, AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER TIME?
AT: The Annual LTEF Gala was created as an opportunity to raise significant funds for our schools. Over time, it has grown in size, popularity, and financial support. The Gala features exciting themes, from Masquerade Balls to A Night at the Races, adding a fun element to the event. With nearly 700 attendees, the Gala includes a cocktail hour with a silent auction, followed by dinner and entertainment featuring LTISD students. The live auction, led by energetic Cowboy auctioneers, generates a lot of excitement. The evening concludes with live music and dancing. We are fortunate to have the support of school leaders, community leaders, dignitaries, and dedicated parents who attend the Gala every year. CONTINUED >
MW: CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH THE PROCESS OF SELECTING AUCTION ITEMS FOR THE LTEF GALA, AND WHAT FACTORS ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION?
AT: The auction item selection process begins with the auction committee reaching out to previous donors to request donations. This year, Andrea Steimle and Windsor Fields led the silent auction committee, working diligently to secure amazing packages. The entire board also actively solicits donations from community businesses and families. The decision to include an item in the live or silent auction is based on the item’s value and input from the auctioneer team, who have extensive experience and knowledge of what attracts higher bids.
AT: The donation of a jewelry piece by Nikolas Alan Jewelers aligns perfectly with our mission. It is a unique, custom-made item from a member of our Lake Travis community, and it holds significant value. By supporting the LTEF Gala through their bid, individuals not only contribute to LTISD but also support a local business owner and friend. Just as LTEF raises funds to benefit our community schools, Nikolas Alan Jewelers gives back to support the families and children in our district.
AT: While we have our annual events such as Kinder Club, ‘FORE’ the kids Golf Tournament, Hill Country Turkey Trot, Butterfly Brunch, and the Annual Gala, our primary focus is on building up our endowment funds. Currently, the LTEF endowment is close to 1 million dollars, and our goal is to reach 5 million. This will provide a stable and sustainable source of income to cover operating costs and expenses, allowing more funds to directly benefit the classrooms. It will also reduce the pressure to continually expand our events while still increasing the financial support for LTISD schools. Investing in the LTEF endowment will have a long-lasting impact on future generations of students, ensuring the tradition of educational excellence remains a cornerstone of the Lake Travis Community. We encourage you to contribute to the endowment fund by visiting our website at LTeducationfoundation.org and clicking on the donation link.
“By supporting the LTEF Gala through a bid, individuals not only contribute to LTISD but also support a local business owner and friend.”
BY BEE CAVE ARTS FOUNDATION
In a world where distance can sometimes separate us, the Bee Cave Arts Foundation stands as a shining example of the power of artistic collaboration to transcend boundaries and bring people together. Their latest initiative, Project HOPE, has not only captured the hearts and minds of our community but has also touched the lives of individuals across the globe.
Recently named the best non-profit organization by the Bee Cave Chamber of Commerce, the Bee Cave Arts Foundation has been instrumental in enhancing our community’s quality of life since its establishment in 2010. Under the visionary leadership of Director Deby Childress and with the dedication of countless volunteers, the foundation has continuously advocated the integration of art into public spaces, empowering individuals and inspiring collective experiences.
However, the impact of the Bee Cave Arts Foundation reaches far beyond our city limits. Through an international partnership with the City of Paestum, Italy, Project HOPE has created an international bridge that connects the past with the present. This international artwork
collaboration pays homage to the brave soldiers of Texas’ 36th Infantry Division and their allies who fought valiantly during World War II to liberate Paestum and Southern Italy from the clutches of the Nazi regime. It reinforces the importance of the Texas military in securing our liberties and fostering cultural exchange between Texas and Southern Italy. The artwork submitted by students and military veterans captures the essence of “hope, peace, freedom, brotherhood, democracy, tolerance, and inclusion” – timeless values that resonate deeply within us all.
From the moment Project HOPE called upon the creative spirit of students in local school districts and Texas veterans last fall, it was clear that something extraordinary was unfolding. Students from local school districts poured their hearts and souls into creating art that embodied the themes of the competition. Likewise, military veterans, driven by their own experiences and memories, contributed powerful pieces that serve as testaments to their resilience and indomitable spirit.
The entries included art from all ages — ranging from a 9-year-old student to a stately 80-year-old veteran. Among the entries, two pieces emerged as winners, earning their place in a monumental 30-foot sculpture crafted by the talented Italian artist Franco Palmentieri This sculpture, “Avalanche 43 - History Comes from the Sea,” will forever honor the legacy of the Texas military and their noble mission. On September 9, 2023, the winning artists will attend the 80th anniversary of “Operation Avalanche” in Paestum, Italy. During the dedication ceremony on the historic landing beach, the sculpture will be unveiled, paying tribute to all the forces involved.
The Bee Cave Arts Foundation, along with representatives from the City of Austin, Camp Mabry, the Austin Sister Cities organization, and the Austin Italian American Chamber of Commerce, will join hands with the Italian government, regional mayors, sponsors of the Avalanche 43 Project, and leaders from the Italian military, coming together to honor shared history and a commitment to unity.
The success of Project HOPE has not only enriched our community but has also paved the way for an exciting future. Through a newly formed alliance with the Austin Sister Cities Organization, the Bee Cave Arts Foundation is creating an ambitious student arts and humanities exchange program. By immersing themselves in diverse cultures and deepening their understanding of the world, students will gain a global perspective that will shape their lives and foster lasting international relationships.
The Bee Cave Arts Foundation actively seeks sponsorships and donations. We encourage our readers, businesses, and organizations to support this inspiring cultural exchange and artistic growth. Your support will enable the next generation of artists and storytellers, ensuring that the Bee Cave Arts Foundation continues to serve as a beacon of unity in our community. Discover more at BeeCaveArts.Foundation or visit their community art center at 12700 Hill Country Galleria, Suite T125, Bee Cave, Texas 78738.

In addition to spending time engaging and having fun with your child this summer, you can strengthen your parent-child bond with these Positive Parenting tips.
1/
Celebrate Your Child: Put your attention on what you want to see more of, encouraging problem-solving and consistently rewarding appreciated behavior. If your child does not meet an expectation, stay calm, kind, and curious. Celebrate their choices and learn to help them see how their outcomes are affected by their actions.
2/
Lead By Example: Your kids are always taking cues from you. Share what you’re thinking, feeling, and choosing as you navigate various situations, so they learn how to think through
similar situations on their own. For fun, flip it and imitate your child’s actions too. Respectfully imitating behaviors you want to encourage and reinforce builds rapport, trust and self-esteem by helping your child feel seen and valued.
3/
Listen Up: Through active listening, you show love, empathy, and support. Really listen and get curious about what they are expressing. How are they experiencing the world? Openly share your points of view too, allowing space for the possibility that you may not always agree.
For support implementing these practices, contact Coach Rebecca at www. rebeccaboswell.com/connect to be empowered in your process. You don’t have to navigate life alone!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM ORTIZ PORTRAIT ART
Creating heirloom legacies and memories is the driving force behind Kim Ortiz, a local artist and portrait photographer based in Bee Cave. She specializes in capturing the unique connection between families and their fur babies. In Kim’s own words, “My WHY for my business is creating legacy portraits for families and their dogs because I believe that memories are all we have left when all is said and done.”
Through close collaboration with her clients, Kim listens to their visions and expectations, understanding the significance of the artwork. In-depth studio consultations allow her to uncover the special connection between families and their dogs. “I learn what the portrait means to them and why their dog is considered part of their family. I dig deep to understand the special bond of the family and, in particular, why the dog brings so much joy to them.”
Kim’s artistic style shines through her signature mixed media painted portraits. Each piece is meticulously crafted, starting with photography and evolving through various mediums. The final result is a museum-worthy masterpiece that exudes love and emotion. She also offers in-home consultations to assess how the artwork will be displayed. She explains, “When they look at the portrait of their family on the wall, they are reminded of how special their family is and the moments in time that the portrait captured that can never be recreated.”
With a deep love for animal rescues and her six adopted dogs, Kim actively supports various organizations. Her Pet Calendar Fundraiser over 10 years raised over $35,000 for rescues, and her current coffee table book fundraiser project, “A Dog’s Best Friend,” aims to raise funds for the Austin Humane Society. Kim also contributes to the “Tails of the World” book project, uniting photographers worldwide to support local animal rescues.
Kim Ortiz specializes in mixed media painted portraits and wall art handmade in Italy that beautifully capture the bond between families and their dogs. Her expertise extends to various genres, including family portraits, high school seniors, Santa’s Magical Experience, business headshots, and branding. You can find her luxury portrait studio located at 12700 Hill Country Blvd, S-120, within the Hill Country Galleria, open for visits on weekdays from 1-5 pm.
