MW: BEFORE WE DISCUSS SUMMER LANDSCAPE DESIGN IDEAS AND TIPS, COULD YOU BRIEFLY SHARE THE HISTORY AND VISION OF AUSTIN LIVING LANDSCAPES?

JW: Austin Living Landscapes is a design-build company for residential clients in southwest Austin. The company is 7 years old and have over 20+ years in the Austin market creating custom landscape installations.

MW: WHAT KEY CONSIDERATIONS SHOULD HOMEOWNERS KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING A SUMMER LANDSCAPE DESIGN IN AUSTIN’S CLIMATE?

JW:  When planning a summer landscape design in our climate, homeowners should consider the following important factors: prioritizing heat-tolerant plants that can withstand high temperatures and prolonged sun exposure, selecting drought-resistant species to conserve water, and incorporating efficient irrigation systems like drip irrigation. It is also crucial to choose

native and adapted plants for better adaptability and lower maintenance, create shade with structures such as pergolas and shade trees for added comfort, apply mulch to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature, and utilize smart irrigation systems based on real-time weather conditions. Preparing the soil with organic matter and fertilizers is essential, and proper plant placement based on micro-climates in your landscape should be ensured. By considering these elements, homeowners can create a beautiful and sustainable summer landscape in West Austin.

MW: HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE WATER-EFFICIENT PRACTICES AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ELEMENTS INTO YOUR SUMMER LANDSCAPE DESIGNS?

JW: We’ve replaced lawns or large areas with native and adaptive sedge grasses. Our landscape designers are trending towards an all-native planting palette due to the extreme weather experienced over the past few years.

MW: ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC FEATURES OR ELEMENTS THAT YOU RECOMMEND INCLUDING IN A SUMMER LANDSCAPE DESIGN TO MAXIMIZE OUTDOOR ENJOYMENT DURING THE HOTTER MONTHS?

JW:  Consider sun orientation and how you would use the space. If your backyard faces west, it is a good idea to design shade into your space; whether that is with a covered structure like a pergola, sail cloths or tall trees such as Live Oak or Sycamore. Providing shade is crucial in the dog days of summer! One should also consider cool colors and the sound of water. It’s amazing how providing splashes of color and the trickle of a fountain can transform a backyard into a private oasis.

MW: ARE THERE ANY EXCITING PLANS, COMMUNITY INITIATIVES, OR UPCOMING PROJECTS THAT AUSTIN LIVING LANDSCAPES IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

JW: We are currently working with a daycare to build a playground featuring a mud kitchen, log tunnels, a performance deck, and a sensory station. It has been fun to watch the children’s reactions to the dump trucks and earth moving equipment. I am confident that they will thoroughly enjoy their new playground once it is completed. Additionally, we recently completed a pool and landscape renovation in Steiner Ranch. The design involved updating the pool and pavilion features. In the landscape, we created trails that meander around the property, leading through an orchard to a fire pit area surrounded by drought-tolerant perennials and ornamental grasses. We are excited to see how the garden develops through the year!

Have you ever wondered why meditation tracks and ambient noise machines often use the rhythmic sounds of ocean waves, babbling brooks, rain storms, or singing birds to help you relax, meditate, and fall asleep?

Given our technology and complex networks, we may see ourselves as separate from the natural world, but we are not, having evolved over millennia to be in connection with our environment, its cycles, and processes.

Spending time outdoors boasts numerous benefits for our mental and physical health. Research indicates that exposure to nature reduces stress, improves healing, and supports general wellness. In fact, a whole branch of psychology, called ecopsychology, has arisen, merging the study of ecology and psychology, with a focus on the emotional connection between human beings and the environment.

We now know that if we spend a minimum of 2 hours per week in natural environments (not less) we will experience greater overall wellbeing and cognitive function. This means we will not only feel better, but we will think better too!

Why is this? Being in natural environments (that feel safe*) has been linked to measurable decreases in blood pressure and stress hormone levels. This allows the nervous system to calm and reset, bolstering immune function. When we feel better, and not in fight or flight stress response, mood improves and we are less likely to react to the world around us in an inflammatory way. In addition, it helps us to feel connected to something bigger than ourselves, reducing feelings of isolation and a cascade of resulting emotions.

In the 1980s, “forest bathing,” a concept known through time and across cultures, experienced a heightened renaissance in Japan as, shinrin-yoku (“taking in the forest atmosphere”). Also known as, “forest therapy,” it basically involves taking a mindful walk in the woods. It offers a way to counteract human exposure to technology and reawaken human connection with nature. You can wander through a forest with the explicit intention to commune with all that is around you, or find excursions to guide you in your exploration. A side benefit is that it promotes ecotourism and helps you recognize the value of  a sustainable lifestyle that doesn’t negatively impact the natural ecosystem.

If you cannot get out of town, where can you find natural outlets to engage in nature where you live? Where can you enjoy green space? Where are your nearby parks, trails, or treelined walkways? Here in Austin, enjoy the steps up Mount Bonnell, walk downtown along Lady Bird Lake, or walk up the trail to enjoy the view of the PennyBacker Bridge. Wear comfortable shoes and give yourself time to sit, relax, and enjoy.  Better yet, bring a friend or two, intentionally notice the natural elements around you, and share your experience in a journal or with your companions.

3 DO IT AL FRESCO GET WET

Can’t get away? Play with ways to do everyday things outside. Do you have a backyard, balcony, or window? When you are ready to eat your meal, take it outside, or at least find a way to eat by an open window to get fresh air and natural light (even if it is moonlight). The smallest bit of grass can be a fun place to pitch a picnic. When the sun goes down, another option is to go outside and stargaze. Take a moment to acknowledge yourself as part of a greater experience.

Naturally flowing water is another part of the environment that can soothe and relax you. We are made up of 55%60% water, so exposure to naturally flowing water is therapeutic. Explore watering holes, streams, rivers, lakes and beaches. Going for a swim, heading out on a kayak, floating downstream, or walking the beach can be a great way to take it all in, decompress, and rejuvenate. In a pinch, you can run a bath with epsom salts.  This isn’t outside, but it still offers an opportunity to connect with natural elements.

Three Ways to Maximize Efficiency, Performance & Comfort in the Texas Heat

Three tips for your HVAC system going into the Texas summer? Easy: clean, clean and clean.

Tips:

1/ Clean Filter

Your HVAC system will be running more and longer in most cases.  Starting with – and keeping – clean filters is imperative.  Try replacing 1” filters monthly, 2” filters quarterly, 4-5” filters semi-annually (with pets and kids) to annually (no pets or kids).

2/ Clean Drainpipe

A clogged drain will either stop your system, drip through your secondary drain or flood the floor (hopefully not the latter).  Cleaning and then treating the drain before heavy-use season will help prevent these inconvenient events. Rather than bleach, try treating with pan tablets that dissolve over time and do not corrode metals.

3/ Clean Condenser

A clean outdoor condensing unit will improve performance and efficiency. While you can DIY filter changes and drainpipe maintenance, it’s best to hire a professional to clean your condenser, as high voltage is present. This service typically includes washing the unit from the inside out with low pressure water to remove dirt. During this process, removing any bugs or foliage from or near the unit helps keep the electrical system operating properly.

All three of these items should be included with professional maintenance, but check with your service company of choice to confirm.

Sparkler Cupcakes

INGREDIENTS

• 1 box red velvet cake mix, prepared according to package instructions

• 15 oz cream cheese

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• 2 cups cream cheese frosting

• Pack of dessert sparklers (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375°F

2. In a large bowl, prepare the red velvet cake batter.

3. In a separate bowl, combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla, stirring until there are no lumps.

4. Divide the batter evenly among a lined muffin tin, filling halfway.

5. Spoon some of the cream cheese mixture onto the batter.

6. Top with remaining batter, filling about ¾ of the way up.

7. Bake for 20 minutes, then cool.

8. Pipe the cream cheese frosting onto each cupcake, then top with red sprinkles and a dessert sparkler. Enjoy!

Firecracker Cake

INGREDIENTS

• 1 box of white cake mix, prepared according to package instructions

• 1 1/4 tsp red food coloring

• 1 1/4 tsp blue food coloring

• 1/2 Vanilla frosting (from 16-oz container)

• Patriotic sprinkles

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven as directed on the cake mix box.

2. Grease a 12-cup fluted tube cake pan with baking spray. In a large bowl, mix box ingredients. Divide the batter into three bowls. Add red food color to one bowl, blue food color to another, and leave one bowl white. Layer the red, white, and blue batters in the pan. Bake according to the box directions, let cool.

3. Drizzle the cake with toppings and serve.

Patriotic Parfaits

INGREDIENTS

• 1 store-bought pound cake

• 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced

• 1 cup blackberries

• 1/4 cup agave syrup, plus more for drizzling

• 1 cup whipped cream

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut the pound cake into 1-inch squares and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, mix strawberries and blackberries. Pour agave over the berries and let them set aside for 15 minutes. In single-serving parfait dishes, layer cake, berries, and whipped topping. Repeat layers. Drizzle with agave syrup or berry juice. Garnish with fresh fruit and optional mint for a refreshing treat.

3. Refrigerate the parfaits for at least 20 minutes and then serve.

Stars, Stripes, and Smiles: American Flag Craft for Kids

LET YOUR LITTLE ARTISTS SPARK CREATIVITY AND CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH THEIR OWN PATRIOTIC MASTERPIECE!

STEP 1: Prepare the workspace by covering the table with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth. Gather materials: thick paper, red, white, and blue acrylic paints, paintbrushes, a water cup, and paper towels. STEP 2: Paint the left corner of the paper blue using a brush. Allow it to dry completely. STEP 3: Once the blue paint is dry, use smaller brushes to add alternating red and white stripes across the paper. Then, with a small brush, add white stars on the blue background. For more fun, create a rocket ship using paint, clear tape, cardboard rolls, cardstock, and scissors.
