TRAVEL

HISTORIC WATERS, MODERN REVIVAL

FREDERICKSBURG UNCORKED

WHERE RAILWAYS AND WILDERNESS MEET JULY 2026

Explore Near & Far

There’s something timeless about summer travel — the opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and rediscover the places that inspire us most. While grand adventures will always call to us, some of the most meaningful experiences are often found closer to home.

Welcome to our Explore Issue, where we invite you to discover the charm and character of Fredericksburg, one of Texas’ most beloved destina tions. From its rich history and welcoming hospitality to its wineries, boutiques, culinary experiences, and scenic beauty, Fredericksburg offers the perfect reminder that luxury today is often less about distance traveled and more about experiences shared and memories created.

Closer to home, our own community is filled with unique destinations worth exploring as well. Enjoy a day trip or overnight getaway to Mineral Wells and the historic Crazy Water Hotel, or venture outdoors to experience the beauty of nearby parks, including Palo Pinto Mountains State Park. Sometimes the best escapes are found just down the road, waiting to be rediscovered.

“America is another name for opportunity.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson.  As we celebrate Independence Day and reflect on the approaching 250th anniversary of our nation, this season also offers a meaningful opportunity to appreciate the communities, traditions, and local businesses that continue to shape the American spirit. Small towns, entrepreneurs, historic main streets, family-owned businesses, and community gatherings remain at the heart of what makes our country so special.

This issue serves as a reminder that we are fortunate to live in a community filled with destinations worth discovering right here at home. Whether it’s enjoying a local patio on a summer evening, attending a community event, supporting a neighborhood business, or simply taking time to appreciate the beauty around us, there is so much to experience within our own backyard.

We hope this issue inspires you to embrace the spirit of exploration this summer — both near and far — and to savor the moments that make this season unforgettable.

From our family to yours, we wish you a joyful, meaningful, and memory-filled July.

Blessings,

July 2026

HISTORIC Waters, Modern REVIVAL

A New Generation of Dreamers Is Breathing Life Back Into One of Texas’ Most Iconic Wellness Towns

The fascinating story of Mineral Wells unfolded in the late 19th century when settlers discovered that the area’s mineral-rich waters appeared to have rejuvenating properties. According to local legend, a woman suffering from illness once drank from a well on the Lynch family property and claimed her health inexplicably improved. Word tore through neighboring areas faster than a Texas wildfire, and visitors began their own pilgrimages to the inauspicious North Texas town, seeking relief from a spectrum of common ailments.

By the turn of the century, Mineral Wells had blossomed into one of the nation’s most high-profile wellness destinations. Hotels, bathhouses, and boarding homes sprang up to accommodate growing crowds. It was a town built on naturally carbonated mineral waters, with the likes of Clark Gable and Judy Garland gracing the town in its heyday.

Shifting travel trends and advances in modern medicine caused the wellness tourism industry to decline over the following decades. Many historic buildings fell into disrepair, and for years, much of downtown Mineral Wells sat quiet despite its rich history and architectural beauty.

Today, however, Mineral Wells is experiencing an inspiring revival. Restored landmarks like the Crazy Water Hotel and ongoing revitalization projects spearheaded by local investors are helping reconnect the city to its genesis. It has once again become a destination, but this time not just for wellness seekers. With carefully planned greenspaces, frequent live music, curated boutiques, and mouthwatering fresh markets, this town is drawing in the weekend traveler.

“We are the wellness capital of Texas,” explains local business developer Misty Nix. “Every day we get visitors from around the country.”

“Mineral Wells is experiencing an inspiring revival. Restored landmarks like the Crazy Water Hotel and ongoing revitalization projects spearheaded by local investors are helping reconnect the city to its genesis.”

Nix describes Mineral Wells as the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or daytime excursion. With three nearby scenic state parks, a stay at the historic Crazy Water Hotel offers an ideal landing point.

“The hotel harkens back to a vintage era, yet you will find that every suite is updated and stunning,” describes Nix. “It’s the top spot I recommend.”

Originally constructed in 1912, the Crazy Water Hotel became a centerpiece of Mineral Wells’ booming wellness era before a devastating fire destroyed the property years later. The iconic 7-story landmark that stands today was rebuilt in 1927, preserving the city’s rich legacy while becoming one of its most recognizable historic treasures.

The 62-room boutique hotel, which boasts apartment-style suites with kitchenettes, blends vintage charm with modern comfort. Retro-inspired lobby spaces, a lively pavilion, and walkable access to downtown create the kind of experience that encourages guests to slow down and stay awhile.

Inside the hotel, visitors will discover far more than a place to sleep. Oak & Third serves elevated dining six days a week, while a brewery, coffee bar, and several boutiques create a destination all within the building itself. Nearly everything incorporates the famed Crazy Water that made Mineral Wells famous generations ago.

“We are returning to our roots,” says Nix. “It’s exciting to bring new people to town and to share our dreams and visions that have come to life with them.” thecrazywaterhotel.com

THE CRAZY WATER RETAIL EXPERIENCE

The entrepreneurial touch of Nix and her business partner, Shawn Brown, can be seen throughout the property. Toytopia, their whimsical children’s toy store, invites families into a colorful world of imagination and play. The Perfect Pair offers a curated shopping experience centered around stylish footwear and women’s fashion, while Sensology blends fragrance, chocolates, and gifts into a sensory experience visitors won’t soon forget. Visit Toytopia, Sensology, and The Perfect Pair at The Crazy Water Hotel located at 401 N Oak Ave in historic Mineral Wells.

EXPLORING HISTORY, TRAILS, AND BREATHTAKING VIEWS AT PALO PINTO MOUNTAINS STATE PARK

WHERE RAILWAYS AND WILDERNESS MEET

ARTICLE BY REBEKAH GIDDENS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA GIDDENS JACOBS
“THE LAND IS AS UNIQUE AS THE WILDLIFE THAT LIVES ON IT.”

Less than an hour from Weatherford lies an expansive area of rugged terrain now known as Palo Pinto Mountains State Park—the first state park to open in Texas in 25 years. Though the remote region was once used for farming and ranching, an abundance of natural resources— combined with the opportunity to distribute them throughout the country—drew the interest of the Texas and Pacific Railway.

In 1880, railroad construction began, with the goal of creating a transcontinental railway across the land. The Cross Timbers region—a combination of prairies, grasslands, and woods—was a difficult terrain for the railroad builders to navigate and lay the ties and tracks. They met the challenge by installing trestles across the canyons and cutting into the mountains, leaving scars that forever altered the landscape.

After the discovery of oil in 1915, the area experienced rapid population growth. The Ranger Oil Boom followed. This new fuel supply was instrumental in aiding Allied efforts in World War I. While the population eventually dwindled, the area is still filled with resources, though they look different today. From Canyon View Overlook, you can see large wind turbines on an adjacent property. The railroad

“TUCKER LAKE SITS AT THE HEART OF PALO PINTO MOUNTAINS STATE PARK, WITH GENTLE, SLOPING HILLS SURROUNDING THE WATER, CREATING A SECLUDED AND PEACEFUL RETREAT.”

track is still active in the area. Trains can be heard at various times throughout the day and night, particularly near the park’s entrance and headquarters.

Deeper in the park, a large pavilion at Canyon View Overlook provides the ideal base camp for an adventurous outing with friends, or a private, scenic spot for an exclusive event. And in the cooler months, the stone firepit is perfect for marshmallow roasts and cozy evenings under the stars, enveloped by community and warmth.

Tucker Lake sits at the heart of Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, with gentle, sloping hills surrounding the water, creating a secluded and peaceful retreat. Canoers, kayakers, and paddleboarders can be seen leisurely making their way across the lake in search of a good fishing spot or simply soaking up the breathtaking views. On the pier, fishers of all ages bait their hooks, as nearby swimmers bask in the cool water, fresh air, and tranquility of undisturbed nature.

Hiking paths draw many visitors, with over 12 miles of trails throughout the park. But hiking isn’t the only way to travel the trails and get the full, immersive experience. Many of the park

trails are also suitable for biking and horseback riding, though things like time of year and weather conditions may limit access to some paths.

The long, scenic trailways wind through stunning landscapes. Some trails border Palo Pinto Creek, giving visitors the chance to experience the calming babbling of the water up close. From dense, wooded areas to spacious grassland, the land is as unique as the wildlife that lives on it. In the solitude and silence, visitors might glimpse animals like gray foxes, bobcats, and deer, or a vast number of birds, including red-tailed hawks and wild turkeys. In the spring and summer months, an endangered bird known as the Golden-cheeked Warbler may be found among the Ashe trees. It is the only species of bird that exclusively nests in Texas. The park provides a home—and a haven—for many creatures.

While the mountains may be a bit smaller than visitors expect, the sight of the rolling, green hills stretching for miles as the sunset produces a breathtaking display of colors is unquestionably worth a short road trip this summer.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

FEATURING JEN COHEN

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Website: alyssalavy.com Instagram: @alyssalavyrd

Ingredients: (yields ~8 C gazpacho)

• 8 large tomatoes

• 1 large cucumber

• 2 cloves garlic

• 1 small sweet onion

• 1 jalapeño pepper

• ½ tsp hot sauce

• 3 Tbsp lemon juice

• 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar

• 1 ¼ tsp kosher salt

• ½ tsp ground black pepper

• 2 Tbsp parsley (fresh or dried)

• 8 oz lump crab meat

• 8 oz cooked shrimp, chilled (about 8-12 large shrimp)

*Optional suggested toppings include: cilantro, tortilla chips, chopped jalapeños, creme fraiche, or additional parsley.

Directions:

1. Cut tomatoes into large chunks, approximately 6-8 pieces each. Set aside.

2. Slice cucumber into thick slices. Set aside.

3. Mince garlic. Set aside.

4. Chop onion into medium sized pieces. Set aside.

5. Slice jalapeño pepper in half, lengthwise. Remove seeds if you prefer less heat. Chop jalapeño pepper and set aside.

6. Add tomatoes to large food processor. You may need to add about half of the tomatoes, pulse for a few seconds and then add the remaining tomatoes depending on the size of your food processor. Pulse tomatoes until chunky and slightly pureed. You will continue to puree the tomatoes once the additional ingredients are added, so do not pulse until completely smooth.

7. Add remaining vegetables (cucumber, garlic, onion, jalapeño pepper) to food processor with the tomatoes. Add hot sauce, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper and parsley. Replace the lid and pulse to desired consistency – the gazpacho should be pureed, but still somewhat chunky and not completely smooth.

8. Store in an airtight container and chill in the fridge for at least one hour before serving. If not serving right away, this gazpacho can be made in advance and stored in the fridge overnight or for a few days until ready to serve. If making this gazpacho in advance, purchase fresh seafood or thaw frozen within 1 day of serving to keep seafood fresh and store seafood separately, only adding when ready to serve. When ready to serve, chop the shrimp and add approximately 1-2 oz chopped shrimp and ~1 oz crab meat to each bowl. You can add optional toppings, such as chopped cilantro, chopped jalapeños, tortilla chips, creme fraiche and an additional sprinkle of parsley, if preferred. Enjoy!

Note: This gazpacho can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up for 4 days, without the seafood. Store seafood separately and add when ready to consume.
