As I sat to write this month's letter, it seemed only fitting that I share a photo of two very special members of our household—my energetic chocolate Labrador, Noel, and her best friend, Blu Jean, a spirited miniature heeler. Watching the two of them together is a daily reminder of something we all know to be true: the simplest relationships often bring the greatest joy. I've been blessed throughout my life with numerous amazing dogs, cats, and horses that have brought such happiness and peace. And of course, one awesome son.
Whether it's the wagging tail that greets us at the door, the laughter of kids running through the yard, or the quiet comfort of a loyal companion beside us, kids and pets remarkably fill our lives with love, purpose, and unforgettable memories. They remind us to slow down, enjoy the moment, and see the world through curious eyes.
This month, we're celebrating both.
Inside these pages, you'll find ideas for family fun, local adventures, and activities to enjoy with the children in your life as we make the most of these final weeks of summer. From parks and attractions to experiences right here in our community, we hope you'll discover new ways to create memories with the people who matter most.
We're also shining a spotlight on the incredible animal shelters and rescue organizations that serve Parker County and the surrounding communities. Every day, these nonprofits work tirelessly to provide shelter, medical care, and second chances to animals in need. Their impact is only possible through the generosity of volunteers, donors, sponsors, and compassionate community members. We encourage you to learn more about the numerous organizations that serve our community and consider how you might support their mission—whether through donations, fostering, volunteering, or simply helping spread awareness.
As parents, grandparents, animal owners, and neighbors, we all play a role in creating a community where children and animals can thrive. When we invest in them, we're investing in the future and in the heart of what makes our hometown so special.
As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, I hope you'll take a few extra moments to enjoy the simple things—a family outing, an evening walk with your dog, a backyard game with the kids, or a quiet sunset shared with those you love.
These are the moments that become our favorite memories.
Blessings,

In the spring of 2026, Weatherford’s local animal shelter was the beneficiary of a $50,000 grant. This funding, provided by Petco Love—a nonprofit devoted to improving the lives of animals—will allow the shelter to expand its many services, and ultimately offer even more hope to the local animal community. The Weatherford Animal Shelter provides strays and lost pets with food, veterinary care, and foster homes, before connecting (or reuniting) animals with their forever families.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”
Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

A list of exciting new tricks to teach your puppy
ARTICLE BY BAILEY MORRIS
We created a list of some fun tricks to teach your puppy! Whether you just welcomed a new furry friend into your home or you’re teaching an old dog new tricks, you and your pet are sure to have a fun time! Spending time playing and training with your pet makes for a great bonding experience! Don’t forget to reward them with some delicious dog treats when they successfully do a trick. My pup’s personal favorite treats are chicken, peanut butter, and carrots. We hope you and your pup have a great time learning the tricks on this list!
Get your dog to bark naturally (try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door). Once they bark, say ‘speak’ and reward them.
Have your dog sit and then tell them to stay. Hold your hand out with your palm toward their nose in the stop position. If they hold the position for a second or two, praise them and reward them with a treat. Keep repeating this and gradually having them stay longer.
Hold your hand out in front of your dog. Your dog may do some experimenting trying to figure out what you want. Once they put their paw in your hand, immediately praise and reward them.

It’s Friday night. Stage lights twinkle and dance about. An orange sherbet-tinged Texas sun teases the horizon. Children skip and sway to music as it drifts down from an outdoor stage. Parents and grandparents sip cold drinks that ease a late summer thirst. It’s the kind of moment you hope stretches into tomorrow.
On any given evening at The District at Willow Park, families can be found lingering a little longer in the simple moments that often become the sweetly held memories. Designed as a destination that blends dining, shopping, entertainment, and community gathering spaces, The District has become a hub for family fun in this fast-growing corner of Parker County.
“The District was created to be more than a collection of shops and restaurants,” says Nicole Ellis. “It was designed as a place where families can spend meaningful time together.”
Nicole is part of the executive leadership team at Wilks Development, a Fort Worth-based real estate development and investment company behind several prominent projects in Parker County, including The District at Willow Park, The Shops at Willow Park, and Willow Park North.
The District has a jam-packed calendar. From April through mid-November, families can enjoy movies on the lawn, live music, line dancing, music bingo, trivia nights, and seasonal celebrations. Even furry family members are included, thanks to The District’s dog-friendly atmosphere and pet-focused events.
While special events bring people together, Ellis says it’s often the everyday interactions that make The District feel special.
“We love seeing kids playing on the lawn in the afternoon, families sharing a meal together, and neighbors running into one another,” she says. “Those everyday moments are what make a community feel connected.”

August holds a slate of offerings for families to enjoy, including live music, trivia, music bingo, and line dancing. Guests can also explore NTX Vintage Market’s Disco Cowgirl Market on Aug. 9, featuring shopping, entertainment, and local vendors.
As temperatures begin to cool, The District’s fall calendar remains busy. Families can look forward to Barktoberfest on Oct. 4, additional movie nights, and the Holiday Market on Nov. 22. Nearby, The Shops at Willow Park will host its popular 4th Annual Fall Fest, complete with bounce houses, face painting, games, and more than 40 vendors.
Visitors will also have a new dining option to enjoy this season with the arrival of 589 BBQ, joining favorites like Cork & Pig Tavern, MELT Ice Creams, Lucchese, and Lone Star Dry Goods.
A perfect family evening might include browsing the shops, sharing a meal, enjoying a sweet treat, and settling onto the lawn for live music or a movie under the stars.

As Willow Park continues to grow, Ellis believes places like The District help preserve the community connections that make the area feel like home.
“Our hope is that The District becomes one of those places people return to again and again,” she says. “Not because they have to, but because it feels like a natural part of their lives.” thedistrictatwillowpark.com

Pets bring a lot of laughter, purpose, and joy to our lives. In fact, we often grow to consider our furry friends as members of the family, going above and beyond to give them the care and love they deserve.

GOLDENREWARDSANCTUARY.COM
Golden Reward is an equine sanctuary situated on over 40 acres in Parker County. This nonprofit’s mission is to love and care for older horses and rehabilitate injured and malnourished animals. While the focus is primarily on horses, Golden Reward Sanctuary also houses dogs and cats. Opportunities to get involved include making donations, sponsoring specific horses or dogs (see the website for more information about animals in need of sponsors), and volunteering for pasture/stall cleanup and animal care.
WEATHERFORDWHISKERS.ORG
A cat-focused nonprofit, Weatherford Whiskers rescues kittens and cats from local animal shelters. These animals are typically high-risk, meaning placement with a loving foster family is crucial to their survival. At Weatherford Whiskers, the goal is to find each feline a safe foster home where they can receive veterinary care, including vaccinations and spaying/neutering, and prepare to find their adoptive family, where the cats will be cared for and loved for years to come.
The expansive, open land in Weatherford and Parker County is the perfect home for pets of all types. It’s also an ideal location for animal rescues and nonprofits to provide love and care to animals in need. These organizations focus on provisions for elderly, abused, or surrendered animals, and often work towards preparing them for future foster homes—and ultimately adoptive homes.
Weatherford Wags is committed to saving puppies and dogs, and placing them in permanent, loving homes. This nonprofit rescues dogs from shelters in and around Parker County, while also accepting stray animals and those surrendered by owners unable to care for them. Weatherford Wags meets the needs of dogs by providing food, veterinary care, and secure foster homes. They accept donations, welcome volunteers, and train foster families to care for dogs. Visit their website for ways to support the organization or adopt a dog.
This local equine rescue has played a vital role in the lives of high-risk animals. Starr D Ranch uses its resources to save elderly, abused, or neglected horses and give them a second chance at a happy life. As a nonprofit, they operate on donations from the community to supply the horses with feed and veterinary care. Starr D Ranch also sells merchandise, with the profits providing the animals’ essential needs. Apparel purchases allow community members to showcase their support and make a lasting impact on the lives of these horses.
While there are far too many animal-focused organizations doing good work in the area to list, we’ve chosen to highlight a few that stand out in their field. So if you’re an animal lover looking for ways to support the efforts of local rescues, these are a few of the nonprofits that could use support as they strive to make a positive impact on animal health and happiness in the community.

Ready to give this childhood classic the upgrade it deserves? Whether you’re packing your kid’s lunch or treating yourself to something special, these elevated PB&J creations will make anyone excited for lunchtime.
The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor.
Quality nut butters make all the difference. Think creamy almond butter, rich cashew spread, or that perfectly salted natural peanut butter from the farmer’s market. These simple swaps instantly elevate your sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary.

TRANSFORM YOUR HUMBLE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH FROM LUNCH BOX BASIC TO GOURMET GREATNESS

The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread
The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices
The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thick-cut bread
The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread
The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread
The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread
The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat
The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning
Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible.
Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.
An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

Keep the Seasonal Fun Going With a Day of Family-Friendly Attractions & Sweet Treats
Summer brings plenty of opportunities for kid-friendly activities—vacations, camps, outdoor adventures, and more! However, as summer winds down, the focus shifts to preparing for another school year. We’ll help you discover exciting attractions and sweet treat shops that are close to home, so the feeling of summer and adventure can stretch on as long as possible this year. Mix & match these exciting activities and delicious desserts for multiple, kid-friendly ways to get active, have a blast, and enjoy a special day together as a family!

There’s nothing like taking in a movie to get out of the heat and entertain your crew. While heading to see the latest movie is almost always a crowd-pleaser, Film Alley offers much more. Arrive before showtime and enjoy the expansive games in the Redemption Arcade as you wait for your movie to begin. Afterwards, rent shoes for the group and keep the adventure going with a game or two of bowling that everyone will enjoy. weatherford.filmalley.net
Waterparks are a popular way to beat the Texas heat. At Canyon Springs Waterpark, the Springs (water-filled play areas) are perfect for little ones, while the Snake Pit and the Wave Pool are a little more fast-paced. CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD IS A FUN DESSERT FOR CHILDREN TO MAKE AND SHARE!

ARTICLE BY PAULI REEP
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
There is little more satisfying to your sweet tooth than ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. Here is an easy and fun way to make this tearable, shareable treat!
• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 1/3 cup granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
• 3 (12 oz.) cans of buttermilk biscuits
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Generously coat the inside of a bundt pan with cooking spray or butter. Melt the butter in a pot or bowl. Mix the sugars and cinnamon in a separate bowl.
Open one can of biscuits, separate, and cut each into four sections. Next, roll each quarter into a ball and then put each one into the sugar mixture to coat. Place the balls in the bundt pan in a single layer and drizzle a little melted butter evenly over the top. Repeat with the other two cans of biscuits. Sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture over the top and bake for 30-35 minutes.
Be sure to let cool for a minute or two before turning the bread onto a plate and carefully removing the pan. If you leave the monkey bread in the pan much longer, it will stick and be hard to remove.
I sometimes make icing, a few tablespoons of milk, to about 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with a splash of vanilla.
Drizzle over the top while warm and enjoy!
