LIFESTYLE LETTER
January Time to Renew! Welcome to 2026, gentle readers. As the calendar page turns forward, we'll continue to be here alongside you to share with you all that we find fascinating about our area - and sometimes beyond. This month we're all about wellness. I don't know about you, but as time speeds up (seeing Christmas ads in September is really pushing it too far...), it's sometimes hard to find the time to think about any sort of self-care on a regular basis. For me, my self-care routine usually consists of taking a spare second to sit and reflect upon my day, maybe checking my phone for the hundreds of emails I've neglected, or maybe just watch TV for a minute - then waking up about an hour later, reflections skipped, phone on my lap, and who knows what that is playing on TV now. Do not use me as your role model if you don't crave this sort of excitement. Like so many of us, that might be the sign of being stuck in place, where real momentum is hard to maintain. That's why we're leading off this month by helping people who can't break free of their life's holding patterns, especially those younger adults just getting started. Young people often need some educational wellness as well. We spoke to Jon Bukowski of Jon B Tutoring for some insights about helping kids tackle those challenges. We won't neglect spiritual wellness either, of course, with a feature about how to take better care of your body and mind in an enlightened way. But wellness means more than just for our bodies and minds. Our homes need wellness also. This month, we feature two stories about home health. We talked with Joe Charles, a visionary Realtor® who had a record-setting sale for a home that was in some seriously bad health, yet became a showpiece. And we certainly can't overlook the importance of keeping the water flowing properly, so Ross Aquino, President of Aquino Plumbing & Heating, came to our rescue. Next month happens to be National Pet Dental Health Month, so we got a jump on it now to show you how important it is in any month, and to give you some time to book those appointments. We end this month with a literal cherry on top. With that, cheers to your wellness, not just in January, but throughout 2026. See you around town! DON SEAMAN, EDITOR @ WAY N E L I F E S T Y L E M A G

Untrapping Your Present If you’re of a certain age, you may have had a specific, irrational fear of something that really wasn’t a big threat. For so many of us it was quicksand, that mysterious, viscous evil substance that seemed to have it out for us. We all were terrified at the prospect of stumbling into that random patch of earth that was instantly ready to consume us, and we’d be nearly helpless in its cruel clutches. Yet someone figured out that quicksand wasn’t the widespread menace that we thought it was, and we even were taught how to deal with it, if by some random chance we happened upon it. The irony is that there is a pervasive trap that’s lurking in our lives that can suck us down as insidiously as quicksand. It’s stagnation. More critically, it’s resistance to change that keeps us locked in our own present that’s not working. However, unlike quicksand, it’s something that we may not even see we’re struggling with, sometimes even when it’s so suffocating that it’s almost impossible to breathe. You might see this in your own life - or more helplessly, in the lives of loved ones who can’t (or won’t) see how their situation isn’t working, or is even toxic to their future and those around them.
How To Get Your Future Wellness Back On Track

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | WE LLN E SS
This isn’t a cutting-edge problem, but there are new challenges that have arisen in recent years that have found new, insidious ways to keep people placidly content in their malaise. Even worse, they will often work very hard to defend a situation that clearly isn’t working. This can and does happen to people at any stage of life. Yet it’s particularly troubling for those young adults who can’t get onto the on-ramp of life. But that can happen to any of us, regardless of our age. Below are some challenges that can be real speedbumps for young adults, but ones that we all may need to overcome - and some ideas on how to keep driving forward and not spend the rest of your life in park.
NEW CHALLENGES FOR A DIGITALLY DOMINANT WORLD
Let’s face it, Gen Z is still feeling the impact of the quarantine that really defined their high school lives. It necessitated a wholly online life, and its remnants have been pervasive. Now, social media is not just their getaway, it’s their mirror, their drug, their solace. Unfortunately, it’s also a source of unrealistic expectations that they can find to be a barrier. How do I measure up to these others who have their own makeup line, have miraculously sculpted bodies, or otherwise have the world on a string? Doomscrolling becomes a source of anxiety while being their seductive distraction from reality. And there’s one further twist: that video you just watched might not even be human anyway. It just might be AI. You might be comparing yourself to a completely digital fabrication. “It’s comparison on steroids. The baseline for "success" becomes impossibly high, so staying stuck feels less shameful than trying and falling short of the Instagram version,” says one ironically online commenter. Moreover, this is the Golden Age of Publicly Oversharing, even if you’re not making it a career. We post updates constantly to our friends and followers, so setbacks are no longer as private as they once were. Previous generations could fail privately. This generation feels like they're failing on stage. Another byproduct of their early isolation is a reliance upon online interaction, which didn’t allow them to create sufficient in-person interaction skills. It’s easy to hide behind the safety of online barriers that remove humanity from the equation. It gives a sense of productivity by doing research, applying to jobs online, and scrolling on LinkedIn, but it’s no replacement for actual progress, and most of the real meat of success is found offscreen.
BREAKING FREE FROM YOUR ILLUSIONARY COCOON
Well, let’s blow the lid off a not-so-recognized thing about most influencers and content creators in general: this is curated. What you see is what they want you to see. It’s edited, scripted, with truths hidden. You don’t see the failures, only the “best lives.” They have real lives off-camera that are as imperfect as yours. They just choose not to show it. Don’t equate their message to perfection. And what’s worse, with social media, you don’t just see your peers. You now compare yourself to everyone, and that’s beyond unrealistic. Social media makes it seem that everyone else has it all figured out; they have their lives hacked, flawlessly. You may feel as though you’re the only one who can’t get it together, so you feel shame and isolation. The dirty little secret is that they all flail about as much as you do. They make mistakes, learn from them (possibly), take input from others, and accept help. You don’t see the first draft. You see polished, edited, reworked successes. It’s messier than you imagine.
SET UP YOUR FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS
Be accepting of starting slowly. Take small, somewhat minor steps. Gamify it if you need to. Give yourself a challenge of speaking with five new people in a day. Reward yourself with an extra splash of mocha in your latte if you hit your goal to sweeten the result, preferably with a friend who can spur you on as you recap your progress. Try a 30-day challenge to learn something new or try something you haven’t before. Take a class, try goat yoga, see if you can declutter something to clear out some bad energy and improve your feng shui. Volunteer for a cause you believe in. After a month, you might have begun a new pathway to success. Physical exercise is wonderful for building confidence. Take a power walk, start a new pushup/crunch routine to begin or end your day, or try pickleball (with the added benefit of adding to your social skills). Find an accountability person that you “report” to. When you have small successes, let them know. Never underestimate the power of having a good support system. Positive inertia isn’t created simply by wins and outcomes. It’s the process. The actions are what’s important for building a new path to success. By focusing on what’s controllable, you’ll slowly build momentum that will carry you past any possible setbacks. Remember, this isn’t about choosing major life overhauls. It’s about taking steps to get yourself moving in a positive direction. Feed your psyche with optimism. Each tiny step forward makes the next one seem less impossible.

PROPERTY Finding the Right Realtor is Wellness For Your Home-buying Experience Any Realtor® worth their salt is going to work to find the right home for you, probably talking about its “potential”, “good bones”, “move-in ready”, etc. They’ll likely weave a narrative about its features, what the house could be under your care, and how it could be a dream come true for your family. They’ll also act as your personal location scout, taking into account proximity to schools, neighborhood type, and any other logistical considerations that you’ve asked them to keep in mind. What you probably don’t expect is more like a “home sales concierge”, as one client once described Joe Charles. In fact, it’s Joe’s vision in “potential” (along with in partnering with the right builder and a client who was open to dream) that took a decrepit, broken-down home with no working plumbing fixtures, a sagging, hole-filled roof, and studs masquerading as walls from an impossible afterthought to a record-breaking sale. And it was his attention to detail and direct personal involvement that led to a client who found out why it takes more than good bones to make a house a dream home. Like most places in Wayne, this is a great neighborhood, but it’s not one where you’d typically think to find million-dollar homes,

although there are some to be found. There were doubters that thought that this home could sell anywhere near the asking price, but the design choices overcame that. In his mind’s eye, Joe saw a homeowner’s future utopia, despite the challenges. “It was very important to us that the home fit the neighborhood,” Joe explains. “We didn’t want it to look like a spaceship dropped into a mature residential area. The builder and I actually drove around this part of town looking for a home to model the design after, and we found one that felt like the perfect fit. I provided the data and some suggestions, but the builder was the one who created the masterpiece. He constructed an amazing home. He truly puts a lot of care into his builds, which certainly showed in this home.” “Throughout the project, I was there to bounce ideas with my client and the builder, offering suggestions to the floor plan, paint colors, and other details. I also acted as the project manager between the builder and the town - making sure the project kept moving forward and that the town had what they needed. This builder moves fast so it was very important that nothing would slow down the project. I think we kept a great relationship with the town and everyone was happy.”
“It was very important to us that the home fit the neighborhood. We didn’t want it to look like a Who hires a realtor and gets a project manager - and design consultant? A very lucky one, it turns out. “Over the years there were quite a few times a client - usually a seller - needed an extra hand,” Joe relates. “I've walked pets, helped move furniture, taken trash out to the curb, performed routine checks on a vacant property when a client lived far away, and a few other things that just made the day a little less stressful for my client.” Joe takes pride in his reliability - and honesty, even when it might not be in his own best interest. “Sometimes, there are other options that might align better with their goals that they might not have been aware of. Maybe they’re stressing over selling but didn't think that renovating the home would be the better option than selling. I'd rather help show them how to reconfigure their home to work for their current needs then find out they regret selling. I pride myself on offering honest advice and providing them with the most current data so they can make the most informed decision for themselves.” Joe remembers his own homebuying experience. “I remember what it was like to be pushed into homes I didn't want to see, been told to spend more than I can afford, and getting delayed responses where I ended up missing a property I really wanted to see.” It’s that sort of memory that fuels what he does. But he also brings a unique background to bear that many lifelong realtors don’t.

“I began my career building computers, working on communication networks and project management before I became a realtor. My background was in problem solving, which translated well into real estate where no challenge is the same. Moreover, my technical background has allowed me to keep pace with new technology, such as AI and digital marketing so I can keep up with the modern buyers’ experience in how they look for properties. I also bring a lot of patience and can break down information in a simple, easy to understand way.” A realtor that’s plugged into cutting edge tech and AI, can be a de facto project manager, and is willing to walk your dog in a pinch? That’s the real find in the neighborhood. Joseph D. Charles is a Realtor® with Prominent Properties Sotheby's International Realty, generally covering an area within a 30-minute drive surrounding Wayne to personally serve his clients most effectively. The Gentle Vet is passionate about keeping your pets happy and healthy. February is National Pet Dental Health Month, so now is the perfect opportunity to go over why dental health is so important for your pets. It's also a great time to make that appointment, as availabilities might be hard to find once February hits. Dental health is an important, yet regularly overlooked, aspect of your pet’s overall well-being. Regular exams and cleanings by a veterinarian help ensure your pet remains healthy and happy. Signs and symptoms of dental health issues in your pet: • Bad breath • Excessive drooling • Discolored (e.g., yellow or brown) teeth • Red, swollen gums • Blood on your pet’s chew toys • Tilting the head to eat or eating on only one side of the mouth • Dropping food • Nasal or ocular discharge • Facial swelling
It’s never too late - or too early - to start caring for your pet’s dental health. Why wait? Book it today! Complications of poor dental health can affect your pet in many ways, such as: • Bleeding gums • Loose or missing teeth • Abscesses • Oral tumors • Organ damage (bacteria can enter the bloodstream, potentially causing problems with the kidneys, heart, and liver) Products are available to help pet owners keep up with dental health at home, including things to help with daily brushing, dental chews, and prescription diets to help prevent and care for dental problems. Veterinarians can do a complete dental workup, from exams to blood work, to a full dental cleaning, to address these potential issues.. Cleanings are done safely under anesthesia, which allows the procedure to be thoroughly completed and stress-free for your pet. All dental procedures utilize the same strict monitoring guidelines used in any other surgical procedure where anesthesia is used. Giving your pet their opportunity to live their best lives means giving them the best care. At The Gentle Vet, we give our best to ensure that you can provide them with all that they need to live long, happy lives, from dental health and beyond. The Gentle Vet is located at 647 Bloomfield Avenue in West Caldwell. They can be found online at thegentlevetnj.com, on Instagram at thegentlevetnj, or by calling 973-335-6500. IT’S THEIR MIND that matters
JON B TUTORING CHANGES HOW YOUR CHILD LOOKS AT LEARNING ARTICLE BY JENNIFER GALLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHAD THOMPSON (WAYNE HILLS PHOTO)
24
EDU CAT ION COR N E R | ED U CAT ION
When we think of a tutor, we see a quiet academic donning a tweed blazer with worn elbow patches. But that is not Jon Bukowski. Jon is a dynamic, highly engaged ‘student-whisperer’ on a mission to empower and educate. His own story is a lesson in finding your true calling and aligning professional success with personal values. Jon graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree and began his career as an engineer. But also drawn to entrepreneurship, it wasn’t long before he and a partner set out to start their own software company. Jon began tutoring as a way to supplement their new venture, and as luck would have it, just as he was recognizing that the software gig offered little to no social interaction, his role as teacher became a calling he simply couldn’t ignore. At the tutoring center where he worked, he was alarmed to see how the corporate methodologies and applications didn’t always serve the interests of the students he was hired to help. This disconnect wasn’t just disappointing, it was antithetical to his values, so he decided to do something about it, and Jon B Tutoring came into being. In an effort to be more engaged in his life’s work, to prioritize his own mental health and job satisfaction, Jon took his engineering prowess and set out to teach – this time, his way. “I could see a better way, and I felt compelled to act on it. I wanted to achieve an excellence that served both the parents’ and the students’ goals – and often these two are very different. Too few tutors think to engage the student!” But engage he does because Jon knows that the key to improvement in any area is confidence. “Confidence is inextricably linked to motivation and to overall effort,” he told me. As such, his company delivers students a nuanced and personalized experience of learning. They dig deep, they CONTINUED >

listen, they connect the dots so that it’s not about an improved score without context. “It’s my job to find out who this person wants to be in the world, and the trick is to connect how this score or grade correlates to the doors we need to open to get them there. At the end of the day, the work needs to be done, but it can and should be done expressly for a purpose that the student believes in and wants to actively contribute to. What we’re really good at is helping them care about the work, to find the motivation to connect to it with a vision for the future.” Jon’s team takes a ‘life coach’ approach in helping students ask broader questions: What will they major in? Why? What are their interests? How will this investment in learning get them from here to there? So, lessons are more contextually relevant, goals become more concrete, and the reason to work hard becomes more obvious. “My students listen to me because they see what I am telling them as specifically relevant to them. While yes, the point is to get higher grades & scores, to then get into a better college, and end up with a better job afterwards. What this is REALLY about is not the SAT score but my student’s enhanced ability to strive and then to thrive, and for them to better understand why it matters that they do it.” From the perspective of any busy parent, this assistance is a crucial supplement to what they can provide their child on their own. Jon’s commitment to get to know the whole person has turned more than a few non-college-bound students into impressive college grads. Jon describes the pressure valve in some families (discussing SATs/grades/college admissions) being released into his capable hands rather than constantly being a source of family tension. He offers peace of mind to busy parents – many running their own businesses - who just want the best for their children but simply don’t know how to help them. “Our focus is on problem-solving with confidence, whether for homework help, enrichment, or test prep. It’s all about building confidence in the student and easing the burden on families.” Jon is so committed to his mission that when he’s not tutoring, he’s often volunteering at the Wayne Public Library, where he runs their Chess club

and teaches classes like Robotics, Escape Room, and even one that focuses on helping students choose their major. Jon loves his work and the freedom it affords him to explore his own passions: snowboarding, longboarding, and competitive ping pong! When we talk about the future, he says he’d like to expand the business. But for now, he’s savoring the present, inspiring others to achieve their best, and helping local families one student at a time. Jon B. Tutoring offers in-person, remote, 1x1, and small group sessions for K-12 in Passaic and the surrounding counties. They specialize in SAT/ACT prep, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and Physics, as well as other subjects. To find out how they can help your student, call Jon at 973-220-2622 or via email at bytesandbooks0@gmail.com.

The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud
1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.
2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.
3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.
4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!

Need A Healthy Home? Aquino Plumbing & Heating Does A Great Job Of Cleaning Out The Pipes
We all know that staying healthy and avoiding potential long-term issues requires system maintenance for our bodies. This entails detoxifying the gunk we put in, flushing the ol’ pipes with plenty of clean water, and exercising to ensure that we keep our infrastructure (heart/lungs/circulation) operating as efficiently as possible. What you might not realize is that your home is a lot like the human body. It requires fuel, maintenance, and the occasional emergency intervention when things deteriorate or get a little gunky. Meet Ross Aquino, President of Aquino Plumbing & Heating – making house calls for over 15 years. Ross and his team have been serving the Essex County community since the company’s inception in 2020. Headquartered right in Fairfield, their stellar reputation and incomparable service provide their clients with confidence in a quality job done right. But don’t take my word for it. Their professional

transparency and integrity are clearly reflected in the countless 5-star reviews on their website. Ross Aquino got into the business as a boy training at the knee of his five plumber uncles. As a teen, Ross spent summers and weekends gaining experience and hands-on training that serves him to this day. After 10 years working with family, he got his plumber's license and went to work during the graveyard shift at Hackensack Hospital. In truth, it was a personal quest for balance and a commitment to maintaining his strong family values that inspired Ross to set out on his own, and in 2020, Aquino Plumbing & Heating opened its doors. “I never wanted to be that dad missing my kids’ games. It was important to me to build a business that gave me the kind of freedom to be available to my family. I want my kids to follow their own paths, but I do care about leaving a legacy should they want to work in a trade that matters now and always will.”

What is one of the many things that sets Aquino Plumbing & Heating apart? “First and foremost, we pick up the phone,” says Ross, laughing. “It sounds like a small thing, but we believe that exceptional customer service is key. I have a team that cares. I take a lot of personal pride in that.” Furthermore, focused, committed small companies have an advantage over the big guys. “We’re your neighbors, we feel a responsibility to make our community better, and we have a long-term stake here.” Ross hails from Pequannock, where he is an active member of their Chamber of Commerce. His company is committed to sponsoring his kids’ activities and other events within the community. “Helping people brings me joy. It may sound silly, but what do you do when your toilet won’t flush? That’s a real problem, and you need it fixed. That’s where we come in.” Trusted, fully licensed, friendly and professional, members of the Aquino team are guaranteed to be polite and professional. In Ross’ case, he enjoys educating homeowners: “Hey, do you know where your main water shut off is in an emergency – because it only takes 20 seconds for your house to flood. Here…let me show you.” Then there are the small miracles he gets to perform in his line of work. “Last year, we got a call in the dead of winter. A young couple had no heat, and they had a newborn. It was late, and I wasn’t sure that we would have the parts they might need immediately, but when we showed up at the house at 10 pm, it was a simple case of flipping the power off and on, resetting the system. This could have resulted in frozen pipes and a very uncomfortable evening, but we diagnosed the issue and set them at ease.” Ross and his dedicated team embrace the simplicity and complexity of any given situation to get to the root cause quickly. Like any good problem-solver, the ability to listen, diagnose, test, and treat the problem – that’s the name of the game. So, while many of us (okay…some of us) are committed to getting those 10,000 steps in, we may forget to provide a similar level of care and maintenance for the circulatory systems in our home. When questions arise, when problems arise, Aquino Plumbing & Heating might be your best first call. Besides – you know they’ll pick up the phone! It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
