LIFESTYLE LETTER

January 2024 Health & Wellness January. The new year. As a child, January represented nothing good. All the holiday events were over, the gift opening seemed like ages ago, and staying up late to celebrate the New Year Countdown with my parents (and Dick Clark) was then just a fun memory. Nothing good happened in January. As a kid, how could I care about it? Life is very different now though. January is an absolutely special time for me. Yes, I still have the love-filled feelings of sharing the holidays with my family, knowing I did my best to make my wife and kids happy. More than that though, January, to me, is a time of renewal. A time when anything is possible to accomplish this year. It is a time of hope, excitement, resolve, and commitment. 2024 is a big year for me in many ways. I am turning 50 this year and that scares the heck out of me. This means that improving my health is a major point of focus. Losing weight, getting to the right doctors, exercising more (or at all), maybe even finding a way to lose a wrinkle or two (I am counting on you Sophie at Face Space Esthetics). When planning out an issue, I always think about what would be interesting for you to read. What could bring positive stories, people, and moments to your life? This year, I think our January issue is just as much a guide to my own personal life as well. Since I was already counting on Sophie to help me reduce some of the aging in my face, I thought I would have her give us all a few tips on taking care of our skin. As for weight loss, I will be working with our star personal trainer (from the cover), Marco Iglesia. So again, since I trust him, I wanted to share some of his insights into simple home fitness. I know I will get emails asking so I’ll say it now…sorry ladies, he’s married. We brought you articles on yoga poses that can boost your confidence, professional micro changes to get you ahead, and a great story on Brooke Mullen, who decided to change her life’s course and follow her passion. I wish you complete success in whatever improvements you intend to make. I believe in you, so let’s make them together.

Partnering for the Best in Cancer Care ST. JOSEPH’S HEALTH & HACKENSACK MERIDIAN JOHN THEURER CANCER CENTER

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. That’s why it helps to get care from an experienced medical team, with access to the latest technology and treatments, so you can have confidence that you are in the best hands. That care can be found here, through a unique partnership between St. Joseph’s Health Cancer Care and Hackensack Meridian Health’s John Theurer Cancer Center. The John Theurer Cancer Center is a part of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. From innovative therapies and advanced diagnostics to minimally invasive surgery and the latest in radiation therapy, the organizations together offer cutting edge medical technology, proven treatments and exceptional support services – all

“Working together to bring greater access to world-class cancer care is a testament to our unwavering commitment to our community.” in a comfortable, healing environment close to home. With locations in Paterson, Wayne, and now Totowa, patients have access to the latest technology and the very best multi-disciplinary team of experts.

Earlier this year, St. Joseph’s and Hackensack Meridian’s John Theurer Cancer Center opened the new Cancer Center at Totowa, the 70,000 square foot marquee facility of the partnering organizations’ three enhanced cancer centers. “We wanted to create a new program in an unmet area where there was not enough access to advanced oncologic services,” said Andre Goy, MD, chairman and chief physician officer of the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. “The future is diagnostic; it’s moving toward early diagnosis, early intervention, and prevention, and to be able to bring those capabilities to an untapped region in our state and reduce the impact of cancer is outstanding.”

Our highly specialized, disease-specific teams work closely together to develop individualized treatment plans for the best possible outcome and to ensure efficient, coordinated care for our patients. The center also introduces cutting-edge, genetic services to the area. Any patient with a predisposition for or family history of cancers with a high genetic contribution – breast, stomach, prostate, and others – can be screened by a specialist to test for cancer risk.

Right here in Wayne, St. Joseph’s and the John Theurer Cancer Center have opened a new infusion center located on the St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center campus. The sun-filled, state-of-the art space provides patients treatment not only for cancer, but a wide variety of other conditions that require infusion therapy or injections.

“We are offering highly specialized care,” says Elias Obeid, MD, MPH, medical director of medical oncology, who specializes in both breast cancer and cancer genetics and will be leading the partnership cancer programs in Totowa, Paterson and Wayne. “I’m able to bring my expertise to this center, so that any time a patient presents with cancer, they are going to see a physician who specializes in that specific cancer. We have disease specific cancer evaluation centers on site, and any follow-up will be performed here; it’s truly a comprehensive care approach all in one location for the community.”

“Working together to bring greater access to world-class cancer care is a testament to our unwavering commitment to our community,” says Stephan Dorkhom, MD, medical oncologist and chairman of medicine at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center. “Our infusion nurses, who are certified in oncology nursing and chemotherapy administration, work collaboratively with highly-skilled physicians to ensure patients receive the highest quality, safe, comfortable care.” The oncology partnership has expanded to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, as well, bringing additional expertise to the community. Nestled in a new medical office suite, we have increased appointment availability with disease-specific medical oncologists. Specialty areas include ovarian and breast cancer, thoracic and lung cancer, and pain management. Patient navigators are key, working with patients every step of the way to help guide them to appropriate screenings, treatments and clinical trials.

At Home

Marco Iglesia, Personal Trainer

One of the most frequently asked questions a personal trainer hears is “What can I do at home?”. Many people have exercise equipment at home but don’t have the faintest idea what to do with it. Treadmills become clothes racks. Ellipticals have all sorts of household items hanging from them. Assorted resistance bands get kicked to the corner in a messy pile or become toys for curious children (or weapons for the mischievous ones!). But weights and dumbbells take the cake; they end up as simple clutter taking up space on the floor before eventually being placed on Facebook Marketplace.

Sound like someone you know? Sound like you? Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we leave hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in exercise equipment alone in the corner collecting dust? One word: EXCITEMENT! We’re excited to start a new health & wellness journey every new year. We get excited while scrolling through Instagram and seeing photos of people who’ve changed their lives through exercise. We’re excited when the commercial comes on for “The last home device you’ll ever need” showcasing paid fitness models using their product.

The purchase is made and that’s the exact moment the excitement dies down. How do I use this? How do I know if I’m using this correctly? Where am I going to find the time? And the kicker, what if it doesn’t work? That’s where commitment, amongst many other things, kicks in. Do you really know what commitment means? It means doing the thing you said you were going to do LONG AFTER the mood in which you said you were going to do it has gone. (Read that again if you must.) You’ve got to stay COMMITTED to the promise to yourself and your family (if it applies). That’s the first step. CONTINUED >

E EXCITED T R ’ E O W S E S S N J O L TA L U R E N W R E Y T O M C M A Y ITTE E A N T V S D! ERY EW HE N E W YE

First things first, you don’t need all that equipment. If you’re new to the exercise world, you don’t need to spend an entire paycheck buying all new stuff. Just start moving! Go for a walk, a jog, a run, a hike... whatever. Use your body as its own resistance in exercises. NFL great & Hall of Famer Herschel Walker is what some may consider to be a “human specimen” and he’s built his physique off of calisthenics, push-ups, sit-ups, squats, & pull-ups. When I had my first, and then second son, I had my longest gym-vacation ever! Fed up with how I looked and felt, I reverted back to doing push-ups, sit-ups, squats, & burpees and quickly added 5-7 pounds of muscle within weeks!

16

G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S

Calisthenics may be the best form of exercise you can perform. It allows you to become more in tune with your body because it’s You-vs-You. Improve & enhance your mind-body connection. When you do a body-weight squat, you can feel and correct any imbalances in your legs or feet. Doing push-ups, you’ll learn to take the weight from your shoulders to your chest. Abs! Everybody wants abs. Well, as Oprah would say: You’ve got abs! You’ve got abs! And yes, even YOU got abs! YOU ALL GOT ABS! But I’m not exaggerating. YOU ALL DO have abs. We’re born with them; it’s a part of our anatomy. Now, how many layers of skin and fat are covering your abs is a different story. Most people think the cure is a thousand crunches a day. WRONG! Sit-ups, crunches, flutter kicks, and performing static exercises with imbalanced weights will cause your abdominals to activate & stabilize in ways you haven’t felt before. Of course, diet plays a major part, but that’s for another conversation. Let’s get back to those dumbbells, bands, and anything else you’ve got just lying around. PICK THEM UP! You know how to do a bicep curl. Curl it! You know how to press it over your head. Press it! You can hold it at chest height and squat. Squat it! Those are just some basics. Want to know what else you can do with them? In the same way you Google why your child is coughing for 4 days straight, or how to fold a fitted bed sheet, or “Is Michael Jackson really dead?”, you can search for exercises to do with your equipment.

Micro Changes for Big Results SIMPLE TIPS TO UPLIFT YOUR WORKDAY

A wise Irish philosopher once rhapsodized that “nothing changes New Year’s Day.” Well, if this thought occurs to U2 (sorry - you too), maybe you’re just taking far too wide of a view of what change can be. Instead of huge, life-altering changes, perhaps it’s those micro changes that can get you started on a better path — or at least feel a tiny bit more productive in your professional life. That said, here are some easy ideas to get your workday humming just a little bit better.

PRODUCTIVITY:

Setting more attainable goals • Break down goals into micro steps this week. • Planning/Scheduling out the time each micro-step will take this week. • Scheduling micro-steps in your calendar this week. • Write goals on a paper/post-it and put them within eyesight at your desk this week. • Tracking goal progress in a notebook or electronic document this week. Note progress daily.

WORK ETHIC:

Being more prepared for meetings • Reading the meeting agenda 30 minutes before meetings this week. • Writing a list of any questions/comments I may have before meetings this week. Write them in the order of the meeting agenda. • Preparing & testing the technology I need for meetings this week at least an hour in advance. • Rehearsing my presentation & preparing materials the day before the meetings this week. • Use the restroom before meetings start this week. • Bringing a notebook and extra pens to meetings this week. • Actively listening and writing down questions or notes throughout meetings this week.

WELLNESS:

Steering clear of burn-out • Leaving all work projects at work when I go home today. • Logging how many hours I work each week (even if you don't get paid hourly). • Saying no to projects and obligations I may just not have time for this week. • Understand at what hours I am most productive and will get the most work done and adapt my schedule if possible. • If working at home, setting strict times when I'm "at the office".

ATTITUDE:

Being more positive • Being more aware of the language I use with self-talk and to others today. • Keeping count of how much I complain today. Write it down. • Giving people the benefit of the doubt when I speak with them today. • Focus on the positive in my tasks and interactions today. • Beginning meetings with positive messages this week. • Creating high points in my week (things to look forward to).

COMMUNICATIONS:

Being a more effective communicator • Using good eye contact and speaking slowly, and clearly. • Communicate today using the most important point first, then follow with an explanation. • Walking into a room with my shoulders back and a smile on my face today. • Face my entire body to a person when they're speaking today and making good eye contact. • Communicating at optimal times today (for example, avoiding 1 a.m. emails). • Communicating this week in bullet points, instead of lengthy paragraphs. • Asking teammates what times they prefer to collaborate during the week. • Putting down my phone and being present for people when face-to-face.

Use the one minute Superhero Pose to build confidence: Hands on your hips, legs shoulder width apart, lift your chest and hold your head up high with your chin tilted. JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / WAY N E

MASTERING THE BASICS: CLEANSING, MOISTURIZING, AND SPF

Cleansing: Your journey begins with a clean canvas. A gentle cleanser removes dirt, oil, and makeup, setting the stage for all the goodness that follows. Choose one that suits your skin type, and remember, over-cleansing can strip your skin of its natural moisture barrier. Moisturizing: Next up, hydration! A good moisturizer locks in moisture as well as protects your skin’s barrier, keeping the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. Finding a moisturizer with the right texture and weight for your skin type will prevent dryness and promote a healthy glow, without leaving behind a greasy feel. SPF: The sun is the source of many reported skin concerns year-round, such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, blackheads, and let’s not forget the most preventable form of cancer— skin cancer. Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable during the day. It's your superhero shield against UV rays. Even if the damage isn’t visible now- it can manifest in your skin years later. Trust us, your future self will thank you.

MORNING ROUTINE: PROTECT AND PREVENT

In the morning, your focus is protection. Start your day by showing your skin some love: Antioxidant Serum or Moisturizer: Antioxidants like vitamin C and various plant extracts are like morning coffee for your skin. They fight free radicals that lead to oxidative damage, promote collagen production, and brighten your complexion. A serum or moisturizer with these ingredients is your go-to pick. SPF 30 or Higher: Use your sunscreen, even if you're not spending the day at the beach. Sunscreen is your BFF, and it plays a vital role in protecting your skin from UV damage and early signs of aging. Don't skimp on this step! Tip: an SPF moisturizer usually delivers sufficient sun protection, while makeup with SPF typically does not.

26

S KIN CA R E | BEAUTY

NIGHT ROUTINE: REPAIR AND RENEW

At night, it's all about repair and rejuvenation. This is when your skin works its magic. Thorough Cleansing: A deeper cleanse in the evening removes the day's impurities. Double cleansing, starting with an oil-based cleanser and following up with a bubbly water-based one, is a luxurious way to ensure a clean canvas. Active Ingredients: Nighttime is prime time for active ingredients like retinol and exfoliating acids. These powerhouses promote skin renewal, fade fine lines, and reduce breakouts and hyperpigmentation. Start slowly with these, as they can be powerful and potentially sensitizing. Winter Extras: During winter, when we typically experience less heat and sun exposure, consider adding more actives to your routine. Just remember as the warmer months come around, that these ingredients can make your skin sensitive to heat and sunlight. The colder months are also a great time to incorporate more hydration, by means of a hydrating serum and/or a richer moisturizer. Embrace your winter skincare routine as a cozy self-care ritual. Now that you've mastered the basics, feel free to explore toners, serums, and eye creams to target specific concerns. With your trusty morning and night routines, your skin will be well-prepared for any adventures you throw its way. Remember, Face Space Esthetics is here to support you through every step of your beauty journey. We're your partners in self-care and your trusted source for all things skincare. Enjoy the journey, and here's to your radiant, healthy skin! Makeup artist & licensed esthetician Sophie Marcopoulos is the owner of Face Space Esthetics, at 1607 Rt. 23 in Wayne. M UST SE E | SP O RTS + RECRE AT ION

There’s a word that’s associated with gymnastics that most people don’t think about when they hear it. It’s routine. It’s something that typically describes an exercise being performed, either in competition or in practice. To most of us, the word has a more mundane meaning, about a set of tasks that happen every day. For one woman, these two meanings took on a convergence. That convergence signified a time for a change. I recently ran into this woman here in Wayne who traded her time in a gym for a life dedicated to…motorcycles. When it comes to change, it’s hard to find a more unlikely transition than going from gymnastics to life revolving around motorcycles, but for Brooke Mullen, it made all the sense in the world. Here’s her story of how she moved on from her Olympic dreams to become known as “parts girl”, and why sometimes changing your life’s direction can be the most freeing thing you can do. My name is Brooke, and you can find me behind the parts counter at Town and Country Cycle Center. I’m a 33-year-old Clifton native who used to eat, sleep, and breathe the sport of Gymnastics. At eighteen months old my parents enrolled me in my first gymnastics class, leading to my competitive career at a very young age. In my prime, it felt like I spent more hours inside a gym than at my own home. My childhood dream was to make the Olympic team or to own my own gymnastics facility. At fourteen I became a gymnastics instructor's aide. I immediately fell in love with teaching and eventually had classes of my own. For the next eighteen years, I dedicated my life to teaching my passion. Gymnastics is a beautiful sport that trains your mind, body, and character in so many ways. To be successful,

you need to be ready for the high demand of commitment, dedication, and trust in the process. It’s a huge investment of time. After years of both training and coaching, I finally realized something though… Time had become very valuable to me. I would never trade the years I’ve spent in a gym, but as I’ve grown, so have my values and needs in life. As I get older, time seems to pass by in a flash. This realization made it clear to me that my work-life balance was not where I wanted it to be. I took a big swing at something new. I trained for MMA and cage fighting, auditioning for American Ninja Warrior along with 78,000 other would-be contestants, and was one of the 300 women chosen to compete. Unfortunately, a week before the competition began, I tore my ACL. But that wasn’t going to stop me. Despite my injury, I finished in the Top 10 for the women’s group for my region. But my journey of change didn’t stop there. It was during COVID that my world felt like it was unraveling, along with everyone else’s. This was it, my opportunity to start over. People’s lives changed overnight and I jumped on the opportunity to change mine, but in a very different way. At 30 years old I decided to get my motorcycle license! This wasn’t a midlife crisis thing. Thanks to the world hitting the pause button, I decided it would be the best time to teach myself a new skill. Other than having a motorcycle license - in my opinion - is super rad, I had a more sentimental reason. My father, uncle, and brothers ride, so getting my license and being able to ride together meant more family bonding time, and what we riders like to call “throttle therapy.”

“My competitive nature has kicked in, with all the dirt and speed and intensity I’ve been looking for.”

When the world opened back up, I decided to say farewell to my gymnastics past, and hello to my motorcycle future. Growing up with a father who was an auto mechanic who owned his own business and an uncle who owned a salvage yard, all I wanted to do was get my hands dirty and learn how to fix things! So that next chapter in my life turned into a job application at Town and Country Cycle Center. When I spoke to Cynthia Koeller there, she must’ve seen something special in me or I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’d happily landed in my new world. Co-owners Eric and Kerry took me under their wing and have been teaching and guiding me since day one. I’m your local parts associate, or as I like to be called, “the parts girl.” My goal stepping into this role is to learn the bikes inside out, but my adult dream has become to one day be a motorcycle mechanic. Riding motorcycles not only brought me closer to my family, but it’s how I met my boyfriend, Mike. Mike has a pro motocross license, which means he rides an off-road

motorcycle at a very advanced level. Meeting Mike opened yet another door in my motorcycle world, as he’s heavily involved with both motocross racing and sanctioned woods events called hare scrambles. I’ve since begun my own motocross adventure, participating in a full schedule of hare scrambles in 2023. As a rookie, it was both intimidating and thrilling to be part of the competition among others who had far more experience than I. But my competitive nature has kicked in, with all the dirt and speed and intensity I’ve been looking for. It’s definitely the adrenaline replacement I used to get flying through the air in gymnastics. Moving forward, aside from loving my job, and enjoying the relationships that have been created from this lifestyle change, I’m on my way in motocross, earning my stripes and I’ll come back faster next year. So hopefully the next time you hear my name it’ll either be because you’re shopping at Town and Country Cycle Center with your favorite parts girl, or maybe because you catch me at your local hare scramble!

FRESH & EASY ARTICLE BY MARCO IGLESIA

Marco’s Salmon & Potatoes Shake-Up Not everyone has the time to meal prep for the whole week at once because it requires hours in the kitchen. If you like fresh food daily, like me, then here's a quick and simple meal you'll love! Step 1. Season 1lb of salmon with Adobo & fresh ground pepper, place on baking sheet. Step 2. Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes Step 3. Cut 2-3 small red potatoes into bite-size chunks & place them in a resealable bag. Step 4. Drizzle a little light olive oil over the potatoes, and sprinkle with fresh oregano & basil. Shake the bag to coat evenly. Step 5. Place in oven-safe glassware and bake at 385 degrees for 60-75 minutes. Do what I do; make this first thing in the morning. While you're going through your morning routine: shower, dress, and get the kids ready; your food will cook slowly. When it's completed, cut the salmon in half and split the potatoes evenly. You just prepared 2 lunches…all while going about your usual crazy morning routine. Enjoy!
