We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort, and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But that's really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, and even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Years ago, after a rather down and lonely period, I took a trip to Maine and rented a cabin for 2 weeks near Moosehead Lake, alone. I had never been to Maine and certainly not to Moosehead Lake. I don’t know why I went and I had no real plan of what I was going to do when I got there. I just knew I needed an adventure. Stepping out of my comfort zone opened up a soul-rejuvenating journey for me. I snowshoed, went cross-country skiing, snowmobiled, hung out in an outdoor hot tub (in a snowstorm), read a few books, laughed, cried, tried new foods, met new friends, and recentered myself. My advice to you…find your adventure. If you can't do that then maybe focus on eliminating things that you don't love doing. It may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail, or going out to find a fun cookie place you've never been to before in a different part of town. My hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. There’s an exhilaration that comes from going away. You never know what experiences you’ll bring back with you until you get out there. But travel isn’t just about being somewhere else, it’s about finding out more about yourself. “Even from a bad experience, there’s so much organic growth and confidence that comes from within you. You come back home and you think ‘wait — I just did this in another country, a totally foreign place. Now I’m back home where it’s somewhere that I know? I can do anything.” These are the words of Chris McCormack, professional traveler. He started his passion for travel during college as he embarked on a trip to Australia on a whim after a bad experience at school. “I had my moment flying to Australia,” Chris says. “It was my first time doing this, and I saw the coastline from the plane. That’s when I knew I’d be doing this

for the rest of my life. I didn’t know how, but I knew. I felt like Michael Jordan when he first picked up a basketball.” Chris started his own travel company to help people see things they never would have, overcome their fear of travel, and to share his love of discovery. He’s their American guide on their journey, leading small groups to places they might never have the fire to do on their own. But to do that right takes some preparation and experience. He’s an immersive traveler. He’ll embed himself in a country for months at a time, getting to know the place, the people, and the culture. But don’t think this is a tour group to see the canals of Venice or the Louvre. “I don’t care about the Chicagos or LAs of the world. I want to see their Montanas, their Tennessees. I’m not interested in going anywhere I call ‘renovated,’ filled with KFCs and 7-Elevens.” CONTINUED >

“I’ve had people who have traveled with me tell me ‘I don’t know what I was waiting for. I should have done this years ago.’ How many times do we say that, and not just about travel? I should have done this years ago. But the only person who was holding us back was ourselves the whole time.” “It’s probably a terrible business model, but I don’t want repeat customers,” Chris admits. “I want you to be able to do this on your own.” Chris began his “travel journey” nine years ago. “I started it with a really naive goal: ‘travel the world and get paid to do it.’ But as I started getting deeper into it, I realized that it was a lot bigger than just traveling and making money. It was about showing people how empowered they can be. Not just with travel. When you can make your way through public transportation and get to where you’re going without speaking the language, that’s empowering. That’s where confidence comes from.” And from these confidence-building experiences, he’s learned life lessons that have integrated into his character. He met a man with a pegleg in Australia who questioned whether he wanted a souvenir or an experience. That simple question rebooted his ideas about materialism. In Myanmar, he overcame a potential nightmare that taught him a lesson about being prepared. He had no local currency and no quick way to get any without an ATM card. “I said to myself ‘this is a test.’ This was a make-or-break moment.” Ultimately, Chris found his travel angel. A taxi driver saw him walking along the highway and offered him a ride, even after Chris insisted he had no money. This driver, the 13th to approach him, didn’t just drive away. He was able to resolve his money issues quickly, but they’d formed a bond.

For the next 10 days, they drove around together, this man showing him the sights of Myanmar, meeting his family, sharing his food, and going to his home, which was really just an open shack that was covered with cloth. It was proof to Chris that humanity can be wonderful — and can be found in the most unexpected places. (It also taught him to always have his ATM card handy.) “I stopped asking ‘why is this happening to me’ and started saying ‘What’s the test here? What’s the lesson? What’s the experience I’m going to get out of this?’” “It’s about pushing through the negativity, the doubt, and the fears and finding the courage to give yourself permission to live the life you want to live and be the person you want to be.” Even seasoned travelers can have doubts. Chris had already seen Europe. He’d already been to Asia. But when it came to Cuba, something made

him nervous. He’d called his mother in a panic the night before his flight, telling her how scared he was to take this trip. Her advice? “Well, you’d better figure it out, because you have a flight to catch tomorrow morning.” Her practicality recentered him and it ended up being one of the most memorable trips he’d ever taken. She knew what he had to do; she had his back, as his parents always did. They always made sure he’d pursue his dreams, no matter where they led him. That support gave him the security to find lessons throughout the globe and continue to shape who he’s still becoming. “Without struggle, there is no progress. You find a way. I learned that in Cuba. I learned that in Bali. Every day, it’s a struggle. Every day, they find a way. How many days do you really have like that here? I’ll bet it’s not many.” CONTINUED >

“You don’t have to go to Cambodia to find yourself. Go to Amish Country. Go to Vermont. It will help you find your passion. It doesn’t have to be travel, but it’s a pathway to self-discovery.” “The journey is the goal. Who you become in the process is so much more important. Who I’m becoming is so much more important than my tour company and my photos. Who I become is going to influence the next generation. For me, travel is the vehicle for being the best that I can be. For me, it’s travel. For you, it could be something else. But how do you know that until you try? The journey of personal development never ends. The trip to Cuba that began with so much fear ended up being the most beautiful experience he had in his whole life. Chris’ love of baseball is shared by their entire country. During his time there, he’s spent weeks just playing baseball with the locals there, including his “favorite place in the world,” a minor-league stadium in Baracoa, literally on the beach. “You can hear the waves crashing as you play.” But as palpable as their passion is, that’s just how bereft they are of equipment. Cardboard boxes folded to be used as gloves. Catchers without masks. But they don’t care, they play on. His experiences there inspired him to get involved directly, spearheading a foundation that provides equipment for kids to play baseball. He’s since made multiple trips there, personally delivering donations he’s collected. He’d give a 5-year-old a new baseball, they’d look at it like it was a pearl. He’d ask bus drivers if they had kids, then he’d give them two baseballs. They’d ask him to autograph them. That’s just how desperate — and appreciative — this baseball-crazed nation is for new equipment. THE FISH HUNTER Q: WHAT IS THERE TO KNOW ABOUT FISHING IN ST. PETERSBURG?

GETTING OUT ON THE WATER IN FLORIDA FOR SOME ACTIVE ADVENTURE

A: The great thing about this area is that there are plenty of places to catch fish with or without a boat. If you want to just stick to land fishing, the St. Petersburg Pier and Demens Landing Park, along with many miles of seawalls, multiple other piers, parks, and bridges, like the Skyway Bridge or the Gandy Bridge, all are great options. The marina has live shrimp and the pier has a variety of frozen bait that you can use to fish these areas. If you decide to get a kayak or rent a boat you can fish the many mangrove tree-lined grass flats that our area has to offer. But if you come here for one of our famous trips, I launch my 23.5’ bay boat from Demens Landing Park for an unforgettable fishing tour of this wonderful fishery of Tampa Bay.

Q: WHAT MAKES ST. PETERSBURG SUCH A GREAT PLACE TO FISH?

THE FISH HUNTER As the weather starts turning warmer, we naturally start feeling the pull of the outdoors — and often a road trip. For some, the lure of adventure may be just too strong to resist. It might be just the time to throw caution to the wind and try something new, or maybe somewhere new. If you’ve never tried it, you might want to consider heading to West Central Florida to see what this fishing thing is all about. So if the closest you’ve ever come to a Tarpon is on a street sign down the shore, this might be about a mile outside your comfort zone. But should that be exactly what you’re looking for, a bona fide sea captain is a pretty good source. We asked George Hastick, captain of Fish Hunter Fishing Charters, to tell us what the fishing experience is like in St. Petersburg, and what else might make this a memorable trip off the boat.

A: We have such a wide variety of fish to catch in our area. This isn’t like fishing in Jersey. Some of the species available in our area include snook, redfish, trout, sheepshead, tarpon, pompano, permit, mackerel, king mackerel, ladyfish, jack crevalle, grouper, goliath grouper, red snapper, mangrove snapper, cobia, hogfish, triple tail, flounder and a variety of sharks. And that’s just the shortlist.

Q: CAN YOU SHARE ANY “INSIDER” TIPS FOR FISHING IN THE AREA? A: Sure. Here are a few: One of the best baits that you can catch is scaled sardines, which is the caviar of inshore fishing. These baits are very frisky and have very white sides which flash as they swim when the sun hits them. The marinas have many different live and frozen bait. And baiting a hook isn’t as difficult as you might expect. I can show you some tricks for that to really bring in the fish.

Sunsets At Fort Desoto Beach Are Second To None

Redfish and snook are the two favorite inshore fish I love to target. Redfish have a bulldog, “I’m not giving up” type of attitude all the way to the boat. The snook is an ambush predator that will make a loud slap noise at the top of the water when it crushes your bait. Then it might jump out of the water or just come to the top and give a gill-rattling head shake to try to throw the hook! Look for both fish to be anywhere from under the mangroves (you’re not getting them on the shores of Jersey) to about 70 feet out, as long as there is good live grass or an oyster mound. Moving water is the key to a good bite. There, you can pretty regularly catch sheepshead, trout, or mangrove snapper for dinner. A: Even for those non-fishing enthusiasts that might come here, or after your time out on the bay, we have a ton of things to do in St. Petersburg that aren’t “on the boat”. Let’s start with the beaches, most of them are white sand beaches. Fort DeSoto has been ranked the #1 beach nationally — and it’s also a top camping site. One of the best things for visitors is our newly reconstructed 92-million-dollar downtown waterfront pier, which extends out 3,000 feet into Tampa Bay. It includes beach access, a splash pad, parks, bistros, museums, a marketplace, cafes, pubs, and shopping — along with a fishing deck and bait shop. There’s tons of shopping, the Salvador Dali Museum, and plenty of nightlife, each with all the waterfront views you’d expect on the Florida coast, not to mention bars, clubs, and restaurants all within walking distance of each other. You definitely won’t be bored if you’re not out there fishing. But really, to me, the highlight of St. Pete is our fishery. Maybe I’m biased, but the fishing here is incomparable. Capt. ingredients Torte: • 10 eggs, separated • 3 ½ - 4 cups finely ground walnuts • 2 cups confectioners sugar • 2-3 heaping tablespoons powdered instant coffee • 3 tablespoons cracker meal or breadcrumbs Icing: • 1 tub of whipped butter (lightly salted), softened to room temperature • 5 ½ ounces of Hershey’s syrup • 2 egg yolks • 4 tablespoons strong black prepared coffee

directions 1. Mix the egg yolks with confectioners sugar until fluffy. 2. In separate bowl, beat egg whites until very stiff. 3. In another bowl, mix nuts, coffee, and crumbs. 4. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons each of egg whites and nut mixture over egg yolks, folding very gently, a little at a time until all is used. 5. Spread on 4 well-greased round cake pans. 6. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Cool before icing. Icing: Mix all ingredients until smooth. Ice between all layers and on top and sides. Note: this cake does not rise during baking.
