November 2023Give Thanks In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be.

Many of you know me and some of you know me very well. You know that I am thankful for so very much: my wife, LeLane. My kids, Ava and PJ. My dad, brother, sister, and all the rest of my family. Of course, I am also very thankful for you, the person reading this right this very moment. I wanted to give a few special thanks to people who have gone a bit above and beyond so thank you to John Plunkett, you may have saved us, brother. Thank you also to Denise Fuchs, Dave Faccone, and Catherine Rabidis-you each had a special impact on my life this year that I am very grateful for.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our communities who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our cities the vibrant communities they are. Earlier this year, St. Joseph’s and Hackensack Meridian’s John Theurer Cancer Center opened the new Cancer Center at Totowa, the 70,000 square foot marquee facility of the partnering organizations’ three enhanced cancer centers.

“We wanted to create a new program in an unmet area where there was not enough access to advanced oncologic services,” said Andre Goy, MD, chairman and chief physician officer of the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. “The future is diagnostic; it’s moving toward early diagnosis, early intervention, and prevention, and to be able to bring those capabilities to an untapped region in our state and reduce the impact of cancer is outstanding.”

Our highly specialized, disease-specific teams work closely together to develop individualized treatment plans for the best possible outcome and to ensure efficient, coordinated care for our patients. The center also introduces cutting-edge, genetic services to the area. Any patient with a predisposition for or family history of cancers with a high genetic contribution – breast, stomach, prostate, and others – can be screened by a specialist to test for cancer risk.

Right here in Wayne, St. Joseph’s and the John Theurer Cancer Center have opened a new infusion center located on the St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center campus. The sun-filled, state-of-the art space provides patients treatment not only for cancer, but a wide variety of other conditions that require infusion therapy or injections.

“We are offering highly specialized care,” says Elias Obeid, MD, MPH, medical director of medical oncology, who specializes in both breast cancer and cancer genetics and will be leading the partnership cancer programs in Totowa, Paterson and Wayne. “I’m able to bring my expertise to this center, so that any time a patient presents with cancer, they are going to see a physician who specializes in that specific cancer. We have disease specific cancer evaluation centers on site, and any follow-up will be performed here; it’s truly a comprehensive care approach all in one location for the community.”

“Working together to bring greater access to world-class cancer care is a testament to our unwavering commitment to our community,” says Stephan Dorkhom, MD, medical oncologist and chairman of medicine at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center. “Our infusion nurses, who are certified in oncology nursing and chemotherapy administration, work collaboratively with highly-skilled physicians to ensure patients receive the highest quality, safe, comfortable care.”

The oncology partnership has expanded to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, as well, bringing additional expertise to the community. Nestled in a new medical office suite, we have increased appointment availability with disease-specific medical oncologists.

Dayna Montaina was isolated, as we all were, during the throes of Covid’s lockdown. She’d been told that her business was nonessential, so coming to grips with that didn’t sit well with her. But she stuck by it, for a time.

But Dayna’s business was unique. Her store’s inventory would wither and die without her. She’s a florist and had her entire supply would likely be worthless with an extended shutdown.

So instead of going to work, she went to work.

She found herself in possession of hundreds, if not thousands, of potential joy inspiring vehicles – roses, daisies, daffodils, and so many more –all at her disposal. But instead of simply disposing of them, she made them messages of hope.

“Our business may not have been essential, but the message that they send was absolutely essential,” according to Dayna.

She began delivering them. Unprompted.

She’d take a flower, tie a note of encouragement to it, and leave it on someone’s doorstep. Fifty or so at a time, going through Wayne neighborhoods like Johnny Appleseed, spreading human kindness to homes when we were so desperate for connection.

Suddenly, the isolation wasn’t quite so terrible.

Her random act of generosity helped to lift spirits. She’d get calls and shoutouts on social media of gratitude, so many that she began to post updates about where she’d been that day.

She wasn’t simply leaving flowers anymore – she was delivering sunshine to people again when their lives had grown unbearably dark.

“It really hit home for me around Mother’s Day,” Dayna explains. “I realized that people

no longer had any way of doing what was such a tradition – you see your mom. Now they just couldn’t. Flowers might be their only physical way of connecting with her. It reinforced just how much value what we were doing had in people’s lives.”

“Funerals were even harder. It’s such a natural thing to need to see people in times of grief and sorrow, but it was impossible.

How do you get through that without being together? So it became the point that flowers were almost the only way to tell people that you’re with them in spirit, that they’re on your mind. To me, what we could do for people absolutely was essential.”

Her free surprises kept going. It gave her joy, to be doing something connective again. It helped restore her as much as it did her community.

Author Kelley Harrell once said, “We don’t heal in isolation, but in community.” Dayna found what she could do during an unprecedented situation to help her community heal.

Sometimes, a rose isn’t just a rose. The simplest of gestures can mean everything.

There’s something special about Trader Joe’s that you won’t find anywhere else, really. There’s an effervescence from the people there that you can feel simply by pulling into the parking lot.

And somehow, it never comes across as anything but sincere.

And at the Trader Joe’s of Wayne, that is personified in one very special, remarkable human being named Lynette Parks. She’s everything that TJ founder Joe Coulombe would’ve designed in some employee lab somewhere.

In another life, she must’ve been a Boy Scout, because she upholds every facet of the Scout Law to a T: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. Quirky should be in there somewhere, too, but that’s just a bonus.

What Lynette really is is a force of nature.

In addition to essentially working full-time at Trader Joe’s, she also teaches music to preschool kids at 4 different schools during the school year.

She’s indomitable. Indefatigable. Unstoppable.

Even as she’s facing cancer. For the second time.

The first time, she found out something was wrong during a weekend family vacation with her kids shortly after her divorce. She thought she simply had a bite of some kind, but when she showed it to her daughter, Bridget, she knew at once what it was and made every appointment for her. She credits what she’d seen on Grey’s Anatomy for saving her mother’s life. She recognized it as inflammatory breast cancer that’s very aggressive. She was right. Bridget showed up at the preschool in Ridgewood where Lynette was teaching to go over all of her plans she’d made.

The diagnosis of breast cancer wasn’t going to stop Lynette, though. She describes it as a “trust fall” with God and she literally said, “It’s OK, we’ve got this.” She went through everything just before Covid locked everything down.

Since it was before the lockdown, all of her kids - Bridget, Amanda, and Tyler - would join her in her room, having “chemo parties” with dancing and celebrating. Despite the high risk of cancer’s return, the treatments were successful. No doubt the dancing helped.

But just before the holidays this year, she found that she was having problems playing certain chords that she’d never struggled with before. Little other neurological disturbances would pop up from time to time, people would see it in her eyes. She’d just say, “I’m fine, I just need to walk it off.” Then some balance issues came up. Her left hand would stop cooperating with her brain.

Her friend Angela Filato at Trader Joe’s took the reins this time. “Ang said she’d seen enough and that if she comes in on Monday without checking this out, I’m calling 911, and I’m not kidding.” Like Bridget, Ang isn’t someone to ignore.

When the techs came in to share the news, stage 4 brain cancer, Lynette’s first response was “you mean that the hormone blockers I’ve been taking to prevent this haven’t been working so I can stop taking them? OK, now what’s next?” They were somewhat taken aback by her pragmatic response. For some, it would be a gut punch. But that’s Lynette, always fixated upon the positive. This time, it was her daughter Amanda who stepped up with her pitbull-like persistence managing her care and driving her around. Next, the trauma of brain surgery.

The innovative new chemo treatment she’s on now is called “Sassy.” A rather fitting option, this one.

On top of it all, Lynette recently fought off Covid, finally.

Despite it all, she believes that she’s been blessed with “such an army to pull her through.”

Between her family, Trader Joe’s, Westside Nursery School (where she’s been for over 25 years), her new schools like the B4 Learning Center in Fair Lawn, Young World which started a Gofundme for her as Westside had done the first time — so much support, she was almost embarrassed. She’s used to being the giver, not the receiver.

And let’s face it, working at Trader Joe’s isn’t exactly a sedentary desk job. It’s long nights and physically demanding, regardless of how spiritually uplifting it might be. However, it’s part of Lynette’s salvation.

She’s still working 70 hours a week throughout her treatment — her concession was cutting it down from 80. She says that it keeps her mentally busy, and a way to keep from falling apart.

“God gave me the energy to work, so I work,” says Lynette. It’s empowering.

The one thing that Lynette wants is a home of her own for herself and her three grown kids.

She’s not in the place she’d like to be right now, but having her family around so that they all could heal together would be the biggest blessing she could ask for. She’s still working towards that, digging out of a financial hole, but it’s a goal she’s relentlessly pursuing, nonetheless.

Her music career is the third part of what’s gotten her through. It’s her passion, her creative outlet. She’s written songs for her preschool

theater arts group, and her kids have told her that this is the year she’s going to record them and monetize them towards that house and past the debt.

“They say that you’re only as good as your most miserable child,” she explains. “So if I can through this help teach them that strength comes from within and comes from the Lord, I’ve done my job.” All three of her kids suffer from severe anxiety about things – “It’s a beast you’re going to have to conquer,” she tells them – but Lynette is anything but, despite it all. The word negative doesn’t exist in her world, on any level.

Her coworkers at Trader Joe’s deify her, with good reason. While we spoke about Lynette, Ang shared that “I’m honored to know her. I think that’s why God put me here.” And she’s not the only one who feels that way. Sarah Alshuraidah shares her sentiment. “She’s just about the best person I’ve ever met,” she tells me. And you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who enters the store who doesn’t greet Lynette with a hug, coworker, or customer. To her, and to her coworkers, it’s a family. And if you shop there, you know that’s not hyperbole. The world-class benefits offered by Trader Joe’s are enhanced by the people benefits. And inarguably, Lynette is their brightest star.

“Every day is a gift,” Lynette tells me. “Take it, run with it, love it, embrace it, and keep moving and going. I don’t allow cancer to define me in any way, shape, or form. I am so fortunate. I am not in pain. My oldest daughter once said that, ‘You’re going to keep going until one day, you don’t.’ And I told her, ‘Yes, and that’s the way to be.’”

She’s positively a force of nature.

WHAT SET YOU ON YOUR PATH TO WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW? My whole life was unrecognizable. My old life was filled with close-knit family, always together, Sunday dinners, holidays, we were always celebrating something. Then suddenly I was living alone, feeling lost and fearful. The subconscious does not understand negative. It is essentially like a 5-year-old. So, if I say "I don’t want to eat chocolate,” repeatedly, it only hears “chocolate” and will want chocolate. Your subconscious is a terrible boss, but it is a wonderful servant. It is our responsibility to take control and tell the subconscious what we desire, and it will go to work for you.

HOW DO YOU GET PAST THAT FEAR? Your inner voice – which sounds like your own voice – reinforces fear. It unconsciously says ‘can’t.”

It begins at an early age. Until age seven, our subconscious is wide open with no reasoning factor. So if anybody told you you're fat, or stupid, or clumsy, it’s imprinting. It scars you. Subconscious beliefs are responsible for 90-95% of our behaviors. Through coaching, you can learn to keep overriding your subconscious. It’s work. And it’s rigorous in the beginning. If you're consistent, the pattern creates new neuro-pathways. It’s not saying it once in a mirror. It’s 1,000 times a day. The conscious mind learns with impact (who remembers what happened on September 10th, 2001?) – the unconscious learns with repetition.

The Traditional Table Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table.

For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers.

To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows).

a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered.

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says.

James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer.

Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.”

But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun.

“People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different.

“If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.”

For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey.

“With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.”

Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment.

“Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.”

What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer.

You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity.

Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.”

If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year?

“Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right?

It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious. “

What about dessert?

“If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine?

“That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around 20 bucks, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.”
