A Renaissance Man in Perpetual Motion

Peter D’Angelo is a guy who doesn’t sit around much. Many nights, you’ll find him playing his guitar or bass somewhere in the area, whether it’s a solo gig, part of a duo, or with the band the Soul Serenaders. He occupied his time during the Covid lockdown by setting up a speaker in the front of his house so his neighbors could hear him during Facebook Live shows he’d play. “People would come with their lawn chairs and their coolers (socially distanced, of course), while I’d play for an hour and a half.” While he was home, he also set up a full-blown home recording and sound production studio to keep himself productive. “I’m in the throes of producing some music with my aunt who lives in Austin, Texas. She’s been a gigging musician for about 25 years and sent me a song that she’d been writing. I loved it and used it as a test case for producing music together from two different locations. By summer we hope to have a full-length album released.”

BY THE WAY, PETER ISN’T A FULL-TIME MUSICIAN. Other nights, you’ll find him serving on the Passaic Valley Regional Board of Education. Although he doesn’t have kids, he was looking to find a way to give back to his community. He’s been active behind the scenes in local politics, but this was an opportunity to get involved with education, something that he’s been part of since college. “I was a tutor in college, working through the guidance department, helping people with learning disabilities and other things.”

HE’S NOT A POLITICIAN. “In 2014, I became an NMLS approved instructor for mortgage licensing, spending about a year and a half running the courses and teaching mortgage lending at the American School of Business in Fairfield. I helped prepare people to become licensed in mortgage lending. That laid the foundation for me to have the prepared skill set, and genuine passion and interest for education to take advantage of representing Totowa on the Board of Education at Passaic Valley.”

AND HE’S NOT A TEACHER. He’s actually a mortgage banker. “I grew up around the industry. My father started working in it in 1993. When I was a kid, he was my soccer coach in town. So after games, in the car he’d have calls with his clients, so from a young age I’d be listening and just absorb everything going on. Fast forward to college, after I got my degree in Audio Post Production and Sound Design, working in entertainment, I also got my mortgage license. After that, I actually started working for my father’s company, LCD Mortgage.”

BUT HE’S MORE THAN JUST A BANKER. As of 2021, he’s the managing partner of LCD. “That’s when the reins were passed over to me. My dad worked very hard his whole life, so I’m very happy to be able to take this on for him now. Now he can come in and work when he wants and spend time down at the Jersey shore with my mother. He’s my confidante and mentor. I’m blessed and fortunate to have the father that I do and he’s the inspiration for what I do.”

SO WHO IS PETER D’ANGELO, REALLY? Mostly, he’s a son to be proud of.

TOWACO’S HISTORY CAN BE FOUND IN ONE SWEET LITTLE SHOP

One visit. That’s all it takes to be a believer in the magic that exists in a small shop in Towaco. Landauer Cafe is a place that claims to simply sell German-style baked goods and chocolates, most made on-site. But the quality that oozes from everything here is because of the magic that owner Christina Renfer puts into it. All of it. It all comes from her hands. “One of my customers gave me the greatest compliment I’ve had in a long time. She said, ‘you know, Christina, coming here is like coming home.” To Christina, the people who come in are her family. This is not an isolated opinion. There is a sense of community in this small shop. And a community almost literally sprung from it. When she opened her cafe, there was nothing around. It was a dilapidated building. People thought she was a little crazy opening up in such an overlooked location. But she saw magic in this place, so she got to work. And not just on her home-baked cookies or handmade truffles. She was bringing that magic to the town itself. It was from here that she began the Towaco Civic Association back in 2004, an organization that continues to serve the businesses of the area today. And that ignored passthrough evolved into part of the beautiful hub it is today, across from the Towaco train station and Rails Steakhouse, at the very heart of Towaco. In March, Landauer will be here in the heart of it all for 20 years. Christina is more than just a resource for the history and business landscape of Towaco. She’s a treasure. “When it really matters, when people are in trouble, and they don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring, this community - all of them - came together for the shops. When everything was forced to shut down, I posted movies of everything I was doing inside (instagram.com/landauercafe/). And they were there.

They came to support us. This is the most important thing,” Christina declares. “Because when it mattered, they came. That’s something that I’ll never forget and I’m very grateful for.” “I chose to self-quarantine for 100 days - from March 17, 2020 through Mother’s Day - to make sure people could trust me with their food. They could trust me with their lives. People weren’t going to Shop Rite, but they were coming to Landauer, with no contact. I had to be transparent with them. People put in an effort to come here — they need to know how much that was appreciated.” Landauer Cafe isn’t something that Christina operates on a whim. She didn’t simply open a store, any store, just to support herself and her family. She pours herself into this place. The treats she prepares, the special coffees she pours, the food she serves, it’s all done with care. With pride. It’s an extension of who she is. She expects quality from what she brings in to make sure that she’s delivering quality in what she serves to her customers. Even those who are just passing by, stopping for a quick sweet indulgence or specialty coffee — you know, those people who just don’t know that they’re family. Not yet. But by the time they do, they know that they’ll be back. Because there’s something magical about coming home, even if it’s for the very first time. THINKING OF SELLING? TAKE SOME ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS FIRST Selling your home can be an overwhelming process during the best of times. And let’s face it, most of us would agree that we’re still not there yet. So what advice can we share about what it takes to sell your home while things are so uncertain? We checked in with Silvia Bonaccorsi, Broker/manager of RE/MAX Neighborhood Properties in Montville for some tips to make the process easier.

GAUGING THE MARKETPLACE “Selling homes (since the onset of the pandemic) hasn’t been difficult because of the lack of inventory. We don’t have enough homes for the number of buyers that we have. Educating the buyers enough to make a good offer so that they have a chance to win the bid because they have so much competition. It’s a great time to sell,” she urges.

The number one thing to nail down: price your home appropriately. “If a house is on the market for thirty days in this market, it’s not priced right, or there’s something fundamentally wrong with the house.” Clean. Declutter. Empty those spaces of your beloved nicknacks that you feel “make” your home. The people coming to look have their own, thank you. You’re showing your space, not your collection. “As neat and updated and clean as possible goes a long way. You need to look at it from different eyes,” explains Silvia. “Just changing out a vanity in a bathroom, just a refresh, makes a difference.” Think about the “interior curb appeal” you’re presenting.

Most of the curb appeal comes from the inside. “People don’t picture themselves outside their houses as much as the inside,” Silvia continued. “Again, getting rid of stuff — and paint. Paint goes a loooong way. New lighting fixtures are one of the least expensive things you can do.” Leave the major upgrades for the buyers. You won’t get the return for your money, and they’ll likely want to do things their own way anyway.

LEAN INTO EXPERIENCE For buyers, it’s not just about “move-in ready” anymore. Don't keep putting off selling your home simply because it’s not pristine; buyers’ mindsets are changing. The limited inventory — along with a bit of can-do spirit many people have developed since spending more time in their homes — seems to have brought the “fixer-upper” homes back into demand. People have become more open to potential. No matter what roadblocks you imagine, the market for selling your home is robust. Even now. Mainly, it pays to find a knowledgeable realtor who understands their marketplace. When selling your home — or for buying one — the advantage of having an experienced professional at your side is almost incalculable. “I always tell my agents, especially those just newly coming into the business. We’re not just about houses. We’re about relationships and helping our clients. That’s what our job is.”

INGREDIENTS • 1.5 - 3lbs of boneless beef chuck cut into 1 1/2 - inch chunks (no larger) • 2 teaspoons of garlic salt or regular salt (depending on preference) • 1 teaspoon of pepper • 3 tablespoons of olive oil • 1-1/2 tablespoons tomato paste • 2 medium yellow onions cut into tiny 1-inch chunks • 4 large carrots cut into 1-inch chunks • 4 - 6 pieces of celery cut into 1-inch chunks • 5 white or Yukon potatoes cut into chunks • 1 teaspoon of chopped garlic • 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar • 2 cups beef broth • 2 cups water • ¼ cup of all-purpose flour • A large Dutch Oven or Soup Pot DIRECTIONS 1. Season the beef with garlic salt and pepper, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil into the pot on a high setting. Then lower the heat to a medium setting and brown the meat turning occasionally for about 5 minutes. Remove the meat with a slotted spoon and place them in a bowl to the side. The meat should be seared, not cooked fully. If you have the time, sear the meat in smaller batches and remove them into a bowl as you go. 2. Add the onions, garlic, and balsamic vinegar. Cook stirring with a wooden spoon (and scrape the brown bits from the bottom of the pan) for around 5 minutes on medium heat. Add the tomato paste and cook another minute. 3. Add the beef back into the mixture and sprinkle with flour. Mix until the flour melts into the mixture. 4.Add in the celery, carrots, potatoes, beef broth, and water. Mix and continue to break up any bits that are on the bottom of the pan. 5. Cover the pot with a lid and bring to a boil for 10 minutes, then simmer on low for 1-2 hours until meat is tender, and veggies are soft, mixing throughout. 6. If the sauce gets too thick, you can add in a little more beef broth to thin it out. 7. Serve with your favorite biscuits or crunchy bread.
