LIFESTYLE LETTER

JanuaryWelcome To Wellness! It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. My 2022 resolution is an easy one- get 1% better every day. That's in all aspects of my life: as a father, a husband, a friend, and as your publisher. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused that revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our towns. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. We know some of your resolutions could be a little... out of the ordinary. That is why we included a fun page with some of the equally out-of-the-ordinary resolutions we heard from those around our neighborhoods. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year. The importance of being healthy in body, mind, and spirit is the focus of this issue. And because of that, we have brought you perspectives from some members of our Wayne Lifestyle Wellness Advisory Board on ways they can help improve your health and wellness this year. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Wellness from Different Perspectives

ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN AGNELLO

As January is the month we’ve focused upon health, we went to some members of our Wayne Lifestyle Wellness Advisory Board for their thoughts about what wellness means to them.

WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU GIVE YOUR PATIENTS? Good oral health is a big contributor to your overall wellness. Prevention and early treatment will keep you healthy and happy and out of the dental chair. Our hygiene appointments are not only about getting your teeth cleaned but also education and early detection.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE CAN DO TO STAY OUT OF YOUR OFFICE? Brush regularly, floss or use a waterpik along with a fluoridated oral rinse. Nothing fancy. The other trick is what we call “oral clearance”. It’s important not to let sugar settle in your mouth for long periods of time; the easiest way to do that if you can’t brush is to swish with water and spit it out or even swallow it.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO STAY FIT? I love taking walks or hikes with my husband and dog. And I recently became a peloton member and now understand why people become obsessed with it! In the winter I enjoy snowboarding with my husband and friends.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE WELLNESS? Being your best self, both physically and mentally, while allowing yourself cheat days. I don’t believe in being 100% all the time but I believe in striving for it and accepting the days where you fall a little short and enjoying those days too. I think wellness is interdisciplinary and I strongly believe your oral health is a factor.

Justine Schepis, DDS - dentist

Dr. Henry Madalian,

DC - chiropractor

WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU GIVE YOUR PATIENTS? Health isn’t valued until it’s lost. Your well being should be your first priority in your life.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE CAN DO TO STAY OUT OF YOUR OFFICE? To understand that “symptoms” of the human body happen after the body becomes diseased. Don’t wait until symptoms start nor cover them up with drugs. Invest in yourself.

“Health isn’t valued until it’s lost. Your well being should be your first priority in your life.”

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO STAY FIT? I like to stay fit by hiking and riding my fat tire mountain bike around Packanack Lake and the hills around it.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE WELLNESS? Wellness is from above, down, inside & out. You have a spiritual side (above), through the central nervous system out the spine to your organs and muscles to the very last cell in your little toe. For the body to work as it was designed, you must fortify it with the best nutrients (unprocessed food) you can afford and devote spiritual time and exercise into your life. CONTINUED >

Jill Clarvit and Neil Nosenchuk,

co-owners, Elements Massage (pictured with their manager/son, Jordan)

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON REASON PEOPLE COME TO YOU? Stress and pain relief as well as an escape for a bit of time. Massage is proven to benefit one’s mental health as well.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO STAY FIT? Walking and meditating.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE WELLNESS? I read this somewhere and truly believe it. “Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving.”

IF YOU DIDN’T GO INTO THIS, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE INSTEAD? I am a Certified Life Coach and was in the Advertising and Marketing industry for 20+ years and Neil was an Operations Manager for various companies. Our manager son, Jordon, is a student at WPU, studying Communications and Media, with a focus on sports.

“Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving.” 14

JUSTINE SCHEPIS BRINGS MODERN TECHNIQUES AND A MAGNETIC PERSONALITY TO LOCAL DENTISTRY

BEFORE YOU SET FOOT INTO JSC DENTISTRY, take every clichéd notion you have about dentists and leave them at the door. Justine Schepis will not meet your expectations. She will exceed them. About a year ago, Justine took over the practice that was run by longtime Wayne dentist Dr. Frank Russo. She says that the transition was pretty seamless — and credits Dr. Russo, his wife and former office manager Carolyn, as well as her own team making it that way. The staff there is a mix of longtime holdovers and new additions. But the common thread is how much they all care. “They’re all amazing. They’re wonderful. They’re all just so conscientious to take the time to do what’s right for their patients,” she says with gratitude. Justine began her journey into the world of dentistry through another heroic venture: she was an EMT. But the stress that came with that wasn’t for her. Her light went on when her uncle — a family role

model for her — asked her to temporarily assist him in his dental practice. She had found magic. The procedures weren’t just life-changing for his patients, they were also life changing for her. “It was the best experience of my life,” she says. “People would come in, embarrassed by missing teeth, in such pain that they can’t eat, and you can find a solution for them pretty much right away. It’s instantly gratifying. I love it.” In addition to her practice, she makes time to help her community — and beyond. She’s worked with an afterschool outreach program, teaching kids about proper dental care, donated her time to an international group based in New York to help victims of torture. She spent a week in Nicaragua for people with no access to dental care. She finds her place in this world giving back, sharing her passion in order to help others. Yup, you might call her the Bono of dentistry. “The thing that I’m most proud about is that we really try to do things the right way. We’re looking at things from a different perspective. Did your dentist screen for cancer? We do that, because it’s the right thing to do. One of our hygienists noticed a lump on top of someone’s head, of all things. He hadn’t noticed it before; his wife is tiny, she hadn't’ seen it either.. She suggested he get it checked. It ended up being a melanoma. Our staff really thinks about everything. We’ll gamify things and I’ll make it a show during a procedure for scared kids. That stuff matters.” CONTINUED >

”If I had to tell you anything, it’s just that we’re going to take care of you the best we can, and do everything we can to make you the healthiest as possible.” she vows. “From the front office to the back, we’re going to care about you, I promise. We’re a family practice. One of the best parts is getting to know all of the families here over the long term. I’m really proud of this office and the family we have here.” In those off-times when she’s not caring for the mouths of Wayne and beyond, the Kinnelon native spends her off hours snowboarding with her husband and hiking with their Goldendoodle puppy, or relaxing with a good book and a cup of tea. But don’t expect her to stay still for very long. As one Google review put it, very succinctly: “Lucky to have them in Wayne.” And these are the true words of mouth. After one visit to the office, you’re likely to have an entirely new view of what a dentist should be.

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 22

T R E N D SE T T E R | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

24

T R E N D SE T T E R | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

BOOST YOUR ENERGY, SHARPEN YOUR SENSES & SLOW DOWN AGING

ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN

According to many studies, over 75% of Americans are not properly hydrated. There are a myriad of reasons for this, from people working out and not replenishing their fluids sufficiently, to the overprocessing of our foods which removes vitamins and minerals, to the elderly not getting enough water to avoid overnight bathroom runs. Let’s face it — many of us either forget to drink enough water or just don’t know the proper amount they need to drink every day. And it’s been this way for years. To combat this, there’s a treatment option that’s gaining traction that can create some life-changing results, simply by adding things that are typically missing from most Americans’ wellness habits. It comes in the form of customized nutritional IV sessions. Dr. Henry Madalian is a proponent of this groundbreaking practice. His Wayne office, Madalian Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, launched their “Liquid IV Lounge” as a serene oasis for their clients. This boutique spa-like experience was created just this year by their Nurse Practitioner, Shellinie Muneshwar. This isn’t some new trendy fix, like getting a cleanse from a new juice bar. These science-backed treatments are only done here if they’re medically necessary, determined by an initial examination process. An in-office blood analysis assesses exactly what’s missing and what the most impactful mix would be for each patient. Thankfully, most insurance plans will cover it for those who need it. From a practical perspective, the medical reasons for using drip treatments are because it’s a fast delivery system and allows complete absorption, precisely mixed for each individual. But adherents will tell you that their reasons for taking the IV are for their ability to quickly give you increased energy, a recharge for your mind, and rehydration for your body. Their lasting impact is what it provides for sustained wellness: a better chance to fight sickness and stay healthy, as well as a really big one: slowing down aging. Dr. Madalian has seen how these things support the person’s sustained wellness and their immediate impact, as well as a belief in their extended restorative, regenerative effects. The science is there. “I see that this is the future for medicine,” he avows. This is not an untested theory for the editorial staff here at Wayne Lifestyle. Our publisher, Phil Barone, swears by this treatment. “My day is long. I get up early to get my kids ready, get right to work, then have events to attend most nights. Then I go back home and answer emails. Since starting with the IV treatments, my ability to get started in the morning has vastly improved, and my energy to keep going and getting through the things I need to get done is far better. All I can tell you is this: they work.” JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / WAY N E

Every Year, most of us make a promise to ourselves about something we will improve on, something to make ourselves and our lives better. Most of the time, these promises fit into a handful of categories: exercising, eating right, losing weight, saving money, finding a better job, and finding love. This year, we decided to share some of the more…out-of-the-ordinary responses we were told from around our neighborhoods. We left their names off of this (collective sigh!) so this way they are not held accountable when they don’t (understandably) follow through on them. Send your “out-of-the-ordinary” New Year’s resolutions to us at Wayne@Lifestylepubs.com. We would love to hear them!
