December Holidays and Giving
Phillip Barone | phillip.barone@citylifestyle.com
The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. For example, my Uncle Pete’s Whiskey Sour recipe I shared with you this month. That is a longstanding family tradition for us...one that is now sure to cause a problem for me at Christmas. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our cities have to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide from Jules Fine Jewelry to make your holiday (and even your upcoming Valentine’s Day) shopping easier while supporting a wonderful local business. It’s not always about entertainment or food though. Sometimes it is about the betterment of those around us. That is why we are talking about the gift of education this month and how Maryam Sayyed can help your child reach the educational levels we all want for our children. Sometimes it is about our own betterment, both physically and mentally. That’s why we turned to local wellness guru (and owner of Tara-Lyn Pilates), Tara-Lyn Nunziata for some sage advice on changing our habits, now. These manageable adjustments can help us get through the hectic holiday season in a more rested, healthy, and appreciative manner. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or those who are alone. So please make sure you take a look at our National December Giving Campaign. Did you know one of our residents was a winning beneficiary last year? Let’s all keep that same spirit alive and send in your anonymous nominations again this year to see if we can help change even more lives! My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy, and good will to all.

Create Healthy Habits NOW! (That’s Right, BEFORE January) ARTICLE BY TARA-LYN NUNZIATA
14
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
Tara-Lyn Nunziata
December can be a destructive month for us. Stress, time demands, and overindulgences can set us up for some January overcompensation — usually, with little success. To get you going on a better path, we asked Tara-Lyn Nunziata, owner of Tara-Lyn Pilates (in Wayne and Montville) for advice on finding a better way to revitalize yourself when the holidays wind down. With these simple steps you can jump start your health and happiness NOW! Reprogram your mind, change your habits and enjoy your New Year Confidence, not just for January, for the WHOLE YEAR!!! The holidays hit hard and fast. Shopping is accelerated, your time is depleted, and we barely have the energy to enjoy it all. Afterwards, we struggle to catch up on our daily lives while trying to come down from the insanity, feeling like we always come up short. It’s not a good feeling. It’s also not a great time to make big changes. It's not realistic. We’re programmed to avoid cues from our minds and bodies, assuming it’s normal to feel wiped out and stressed. We sometimes even wear stress like a badge of honor. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can change it. Now. What if we learned to adopt permanent, positive, mindful habits? We’d thrive. We need to dive in and embrace it until this way of thinking permeates every inch of our cells and lives. It takes practice. Become aware of the programming you have to change, including the need for instant gratification and results. Chronic stress is poison and can cause terrible health consequences. I’ve been where you are, still making changes to limit and cope with excessive stress. I own three businesses, have two teenagers and used to thrive on stress.
Until I didn’t. I knew I had to make changes or there could be irreversible health consequences. A revelation: I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions. WHAAAT? There, I said it. I know! I am a leader in the fitness industry, how can this be? I don’t believe it works. It sets up feelings of inadequacy and failure. We don’t make any real, sustainable changes. They’re temporary. They’re foreshadowed feelings of failure wrapped up in a pretty little box with a bow and delusions of hope for a new start. Don’t get me wrong. I love the fresh start of the New Year, but not on someone’s peer-pressured, culturally dominated watch. Resolutions are so high achieving that we fail. Miserably. We get discouraged and lose motivation. Intentional changes work best because they are intentional. They have a tone of self-care, not obligation. That doesn’t mean they’re easy, but they are authentic to us. Getting started and changing your mindset is the hard part. Pilates breathing. Lying in bed, slowly and intentionally breathe in for 5 counts, then out for 5 counts, fully. Do this 10 times before you even get out of bed in the morning. Practice gratitude. After your breathing, think of three things that you are truly grateful for today. Write them in a journal with the date. Have one goal for today. That’s right, just one. Whatever it is, make sure it’s motivated by you alone wanting to complete it. Write it in a goals journal with the date. Check it off at night if you complete it. CONTINUED >

way to work, put on your favorite music or an inspiring podcast, or call a friend or family member to catch up (hands free, of course).
Exercise. Trust me! Committing to just 20 minutes can result in doing more because it feels so good, without the pressure and obligatory feeling. If it doesn’t result in longer, you worked out for 20 minutes — which is better than none.
Make your schedule for the week with room for adjustments. Leave some room for spontaneity. Feel in control of it and not at its mercy.
Reasonable food choices. Food is neither good nor bad. It’s fuel. Some fuel is more nutritious than others. Feeling positive about your choices will set your mind to make better, intentional choices. You’ll see that donut as something delicious and indulgent instead of feeling guilty about it and a failure.
Learn to meditate. There are dozens of apps to help with this.
Do one thing you enjoy after breakfast. Self-care equals setting up the day right, including those extra minutes sipping coffee or reading that extra chapter. Even if you rush out to drive kids to school or avoid rush hour traffic on your

Star Wars Legos don't like Elves
A Christmas Memory Sometimes, There's More to Christmas Than Just Santa ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON AND JULIE SEAMAN I recently learned a pretty grown-up holiday lesson from my 12-year-old. While we were decorating, I asked my son what his favorite Christmas memory was. It could’ve been any number of insane gifts he’d gotten, or some wild Elf on the Shelf antics. Or maybe even the eternal drama we created every year trying to get our Christmas card picture taken. No, I was pretty sure that he’d tell me the story about how we almost ran over Santa. We were about to leave my brother-in-law’s house as the Christmas Eve party was winding down. The kids were very concerned about getting home and into bed before Santa arrived. There wasn’t even enough time to wait to say goodbye to our host. He’d vanished somewhere into the house, no doubt getting some last-minute wrapping done. After we loaded everything into the car and everyone was strapped up, I went to pull away from the curb when a shadowy figure, dressed in red, crossed in front of the car. The kids all shouted in unison, “Oh my God! Dad! It’s Santa Claus! You almost hit him!”
18
K I D S COR N E R | L IFE + CULTURE
Luckily for all involved, it wasn’t really that close. But the point was made — we had to get home right away, because old Saint Nick was right here! There would be no leisurely drive home to enjoy the various decorations of the season. “Drive fast, dad, but be careful! Santa’s already here, and you already almost hit him once!” Who knew that Santa could be such a careless pedestrian - with such impeccable timing? We arrived home without another sighting and the kids never forgot it. I was sure that was the story my 12-year old would have told me was his favorite memory but apparently there was something that made an even bigger impression on him. A hamster. My son’s favorite Christmas memory was the year Santa brought his sister a hamster. He was 7. It wasn’t even a gift he got. “Why was it that one?” “Because I remember how much joy I saw on her face.” Leave it to a child to remind us. It’s not about Santa. It’s not about what you get. It’s about the joy of the people you love.

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON
“Our primary goal is to make the child feel good, give them the insight and power to their own potential , all of them can do it and achieve in school – plant the seed for confidence.”
Parents see all sorts of things on their kids’ Christmas lists: a new XBox, Legos, the latest iPhone, maybe even a new puppy. But what we’ll never see on that list is confidence. Fact is, many kids struggle with that on a daily basis during the school year. Usually silently. They’ll accept that B or C in a class because their focus is on just getting through it and putting it in the rearview mirror. As parents, we’ll look at it and say “Hey — why isn’t my kid getting an ‘A’?” Sometimes it takes another parent to recognize that there’s something that can be done for kids who struggle for that A — or even just to get their head above water. Enter Maryam Sayyed. Maryam started All Topics Tutoring with the goal of building confidence for kids who might not be getting it elsewhere. It’s a small company that focuses on the child’s needs first, how to help them the way they need, not forcefed a curriculum. Maryam isn’t a teacher. She’s not a school administrator. She’s an attorney. She’s a mom. She simply saw a need that wasn’t being filled and stepped up to help give kids a better way forward. Her own kids were among the first clients. It all started with a family in need who couldn’t find the right way to help their kids. For families like that, their access to resources can limit what their kids might otherwise rise to without quality tutors. With that in mind, Maryam keeps things affordable. Confidence shouldn’t be only available to the highest bidder.
“It’s about flipping the switch for your child so they have the tools to set them up for success, and over time they will need tutoring less and less as they grow and gain more confidence,” according to Sayyed. “This isn’t a big lesson factory. We deliver custom lessons that work for your child - literally. We’ll come to you, so we don’t add yet another trip to your schedule. Or you can come to us. Or we can do virtual. We do group sessions too, which works for some families and groups of friends.” “The critical piece is that we take the time to get to know your kids, what works for them as people, and how to set them up to be confident and successful, not just to jump a letter grade or two. We get to know your kids. It’s a lifetime commitment.” It’s easy to see when your child is struggling with schoolwork and needs more help. If they’re carrying D’s up and down their classes, it’s pretty obvious that they’ll benefit from tutoring. And those “tiger moms” who come pre-programmed with excellence demands will already have multiple resources on speed dial. For the rest of us, these can be uncharted waters. Kids are already pressed for time, so this isn’t about adding work to their already stressed lives. This is about giving them the gift of confidence. And let’s face it, it’s no harder to wrap than a puppy. For more information, go to alltopicstutoring.com, or call 973.519.0179. All Topics Tutoring services students across most of North Jersey.

How big the space is - especially the ceiling height. An 8-foot ceiling won’t mean you can get an 8-foot tree. 6-7 feet is about all you can fit, especially if you have a large top ornament. How long you’ll keep it displayed. Needle retention is important if you plan to ride it into January. Give it a shake to test it before you decide that’s the one you’ll strap to your car. How many ornaments you’ll use. Ornaments can be fragile yet heavy. Good branch strength is key if you tend to have heavier ornaments. What type of look you’re going for. Everybody’s got their own view of the perfect Christmas tree. Firs, spruces, pines all have different vibes. Go with what’s right for you. Fir trees tend to have better needle retention and fragrance; spruces usually have short, stiff needles and branches. Pines tend to have far softer needles (with good retention) but can produce a lot of sap. They’re all different and each seems to have their own characteristics and personality.
These are the hardest-working members of the Christmas tree industry. More than half of all Christmas trees sold in America are Douglas firs. This is the lunchbucket crowd, the ones who roll up their branches and get things done. They have stout branches that do the heavy lifting and make sure no ornament is left behind. Their favorite class in high school was Wood Shop (it deeply inspired them when their teacher would say “You’re here to learn how to make something of yourself!”). If they were in a band, Douglas firs would be the drummer.
FRASER FIR: Frasers also have strong branches that are ideal for heavy decorations. They tend to be busybodies (you can almost hear them say “I’m listening…”), so don’t badmouth Santa around them. Frasers win the needle retention contest by a mile. Many consider them the perfect Christmas tree, whether you agree is up to you. Their favorite singer is Sinatra. Frasers are lactose intolerant. They just can’t stand it.
BALSAM FIR: Balsams are classic. In fact, most Christmas candles you’ll find will be based upon their scent. They tend to have tighter branches with softer needles than Frasers, so they’ll probably be more “full-figured” trees, ready to take on any ornaments you can throw at them. Balsams also have a wicked sense of humor and tend to be quite intelligent for a conifer. CONTINUED >

BLUE SPRUCE: Despite their name, Blue Spruces are apolitical. They have wonderful agents, appearing in numerous Hallmark Christmas movies and Target commercials. They’re native to Colorado, so their bluish hue always looks snow-kissed and seasonal. Blue Spruces are nearly always perfectly shaped trees. Other Christmas trees hate them for that. White Spruces are their colorful cousins who tend to smell funny when hugged.
SCOTCH PINE: If you’re looking for a tree that just won’t shed, the Scotch Pine might be for you. This is a tree that will keep the party going, maybe until Valentine’s Day. Sure, they can be sappy, but who isn’t around the holidays? The needles are soft, the branches are stiff, and they’re great if you’re a “when was the last time anyone checked the water in the tree” type of household. Scotch Pines prefer Marvel to DC and often claim to be a little psychic. Don’t believe them.
TRUFFULA TREES: Not a thing, no matter what the Lorax might say. If you’d like to spread some holiday spirit, post a picture of your Christmas tree on our Wayne Lifestyle Instagram page (@waynelifestylemag)

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Uncle Pete’s
HOL IDAY W HISK E Y S OUR HOLIDAY HAPPINESS...IN A GLASS ARTICLE BY PHILLIP BARONE
Ok, so I am tempting fate here, giving up the family "secret" elixir mastered long ago by my Uncle Pete (boy I really miss him). I may very well have a whole line of cousins hunting for me after they find out I shared this but...you all are worth it! Trust me, incorporate this into your holiday celebrations and remember...it really is a wonderful life!
H O L ID AY W HI S K E Y S O UR COMBINE IN A BLENDER THE FOLLOWING: • (2) 8-ounce glasses of orange juice • 1/4 glass of Mi-Lem (sweetened lemon mix) or a suitable replacement if you can't find it- I ordered cases of it online a while ago. • 1 glass of whiskey (rye, not scotch) • 1 tablespoon sugar • 4-5 ice cubes Blend then pour into your favorite old-fashioned bar glass and top with a maraschino cherry (I usually put 2-3 in mine). Now take a sip and go look for the mistletoe.
