LIFESTYLE LETTER
November Thankful
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Phillip Barone | phillip.barone@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Don Seaman | don.seaman@citylifestyle.com
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and it encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our communities. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our communities who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our towns the vibrant communities they are. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of our communities directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. In our journey together, I have shared with you some important people that I have been thankful for. Now I would like to share with you something else I am also very thankful for, and that is second chances. Even though I have previously owned other businesses in my life, Wayne Lifestyle is my personal second chance. My second chance to provide a better life for my family, my second chance to make my mom and dad proud, and my second chance to become something more for my community. I thank everyone involved in my second chance and that includes each of you reading this. You keep me on my toes, prop me up when I am down and keep me striving to be better. I thank you all.

Inter-generational, Extra-inspirational THE ROSEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER SPOTLIGHTS A THEATRICAL SIDE TO THE WAYNE YMCA ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN
Wayne has a hidden arts scene that doesn’t necessarily jump out at you. But it should. The Rosen Performing Arts Center is tucked away in the Wayne YMCA, a professional theater space nestled in a center known more for its gym and yoga classes than for performing arts. While it doesn’t have its own standalone building, as a facility, it rivals The Barn Theater in Montville and the Shea Center for the Performing Arts at WPU in Wayne. With its 406-seat facility, It’s actually bigger than the Barn and more intimate than the Shea Center. What rises to the surface with the theater program at the Rosen PAC is that it is truly based in the community, much like its YMCA home. The season at the Rosen PAC is filled with opportunities for kids and teens to take the stage, but one unique program is a true standout - their annual intergenerational show. “This show is what the Y stands for. This show literally is for everybody in the community, it’s just one microcosm of what the Y is,” explains Erin Gilgur, Interim Membership Director for the Wayne YMCA.
And no, you don’t need to be a member to participate. It’s really an unusual offering for a community theater, running a production with a cast from age 5 and up. They’ll have multiple generation families participate, grandparents with their grandkids, anyone who joins will have a part. It’s a massive undertaking. When they did Beauty and the Beast, there were nearly 100 cast members. “It’s a great experience to share,” says Meryl Budnick, Cultural Arts Director for the Rosen PAC and producer of the shows. “It’s a great way for people who may or may not have any acting experience, families whose kids have done shows but their parents haven’t. It’s an opportunity to do something fun together as a family.” Sometimes, even the most inexperienced create theater magic. “We had a dad whose kids had been doing theater at the Y for years. We were casting for The Music Man, and he came with his kids and said ‘you know what? I’m gonna try it.’ He’d never done theater before. He ended up landing a lead role.” CONTINUED >

But along the way, even the most apprehensive cast members learn something about themselves. Many come back to join the cast year after year. It becomes an annual rite; they’ve found their theater home. Or, in theater parlance, their troupe. One of the most inspirational aspects of this show is their inclusion of all members of the community, especially as it relates to the kids in the cast. “They have the opportunity to work with adults as peers, and from all segments of the community,” explains Budnick. “They can get to interact with adults, but also adults with special needs. It’s so much more powerful than what they might see simply in the classroom.” To make sure that the community is indeed fully represented, they hire professional ASL interpreters for the deaf. One who comes back yearly is a professional actor and “he’s so good I end up watching him most of the time,” admits Gilgur. This year’s intergenerational show was The Spongebob Musical, which had its three-day run in October. According to Budnick, she’s already gotten started on next year’s as-yet unannounced production. “Every year, we want to build upon our momentum for next year’s show. I start again the very next day.” With her robust theater plan and community success with the intergenerational show each year, the Rosen PAC might not be considered a hidden gem for much longer. One day, people might be asking “hey — did you know that there’s a gym at the Rosen Performing Arts Center? For more information about the Rosen Performing Arts Center, go to metroymcas.org/rosenpac

The
Magic Man
Simon Mandal’s Gratitude isn’t an Illusion 20
M UST SE E | EN TERTA INME NT
Simon Mandal is magic, although not in the pointy hat with stars, casting spells, wand-waving sort of way. He is a magician, sure, but there’s so much more to him that the only word that seems appropriate — yet ironically somehow under-serving — is magic. No, the magic that Simon brings is deeper than just the illusions he performs. He’s a man of sincere joy, polite to nearly Canadian standards. His chosen profession is often looked at with skepticism, of someone trying to play a trick on you. With Simon Mandal, it’s about sharing the wonder of the seemingly impossible. You don’t feel duped — you feel included. His goal is to give people an experience that it’s actually not possible to give them. He equates it to a positive feeling of being struck by lightning. “For me, the Gold Standard is when it looks like something has really happened and it’s inexplicable,” Simon says. “Sawing someone in half, you sort of figure that there’s some optical illusion going on with the box. That’s not my thing. It’s exciting to give the sense of twisting reality.” His enthusiasm is disarming, the energy brimming out of him like a little kid who’s sharing something that just blew his mind. He’s an inclusive entertainer. It’s all about sharing the wonder he’s found. According to Simon, finding your own magic has a lot to do with finding what works for your personality. A performer since his freshman year of high school in 1992, Simon’s been a professional actor and comedian as well as crisscrossing the globe in pursuit of spreading magical wonder. So he has a lot talents to draw from. One of the niches he’s carved out is performing shows for corporate events, which began in earnest somewhat organically. A few weeks after a private show, an audience member called Simon about a corporate performance. When he asked for info about the company, the caller said “sure - we’re Google.” CONTINUED >

“Living with gratitude is one of the easiest ways to find true happiness.” —Simon Mandal
And that’s how his relationship with big events kicked off. But smaller events still have a special place of magic in Simon’s heart. He shines brightest when at the most intimate, huddling in to blow people’s minds individually and in very small groups. It’s concierge magic.
THE MAGIC OF GIVING BACK It’s no coincidence that the performances Simon prefers engender eye contact because it’s connective. That’s why he works so hard to give back to others, not only in his performances but also in his scheduling. Non-profits and charity events figure heavily in his calendar. Homelessness, environmental causes, wildlife conservation, and so much more.
22
M UST SE E | EN TERTA INME NT
This is a man who believes he can make a difference on many fronts. “I’ve got a special place in my heart for the special needs community — people with autism, developmental issues, that sort of thing. I’ve done lots of private shows to help with their fundraising. We did one recently in Montclair and we’re hoping to do more of those.” To that end, Simon is working on developing a regional theater program that will allow him to benefit multiple charities in an elevated way to drive public attention while efficiently raising money for them. “It’s a winwin for them,” he explains. He’s raised tens of thousands of dollars in a single fundraising illusion night. With this program, there’s potential to be far more transformative.
This hyper-gracious man doesn’t take his success lightly. He has a “grateful for” list a mile long, from teachers and mentors, friendships with legendary performers he’s worked with, and the hundreds of thousands of people he’s been blessed to perform for and make special days and happy events even happier. “Our experience of life is hugely influenced by the way we choose to perceive it,” Simon advises. “Living with gratitude is one of the easiest ways to find true happiness.” Simon Mandal is headlining a HABcore charity benefit for homelessness in Red Bank in January. For more information about the event and to get more information about Simon, go to his website, thesimonshow.com and his Instagram, @simonmandalmagic.

a positive force ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE SKAFF FAMILY
For Brian Skaff, IT’s All About Family
26
H OM E TOWN H E R O | L IFE + CULTURE
When you run a business, it’s easy to say that you treat your clients like family. It makes for a great tagline in your marketing. It’s a pretty bold claim to make when you run an IT business, not traditionally known for being the most socially outgoing types. For Brian Skaff, it’s simply who he is, thanks in large part to his DNA. His dad, Joe Skaff, ran an executive recruiting firm here in Wayne for nearly 50 years after launching in NYC. It was while working for his dad that Brian found his calling in IT work, but to do it right, it would be done the Skaff way. It’s all about being grateful for what you have, helpful for those who need it, and treating people like family. It’s working. Brian’s Complete Computer Solutions celebrated their own 20th anniversary in October. Embracing that family feel with his clients and his staff has driven him throughout the years. Fathers can set the journey of your life in countless ways. Brian was raised by a man devoted to helping others however he could. “It wouldn’t matter who you were, where you were. No exaggeration - a ten minute conversation with him would change people’s lives. That’s the lesson I learned, and as a result, that’s how I try to live my life.” His dad has always been his hero, according to Brian. Part of the journey is the shared experiences that father/ son relationship brings. For Brian and his dad, a big part of that was golf. “We learned how to play together, although he’s always been better than me,” Brian admits. “But not just playing, it was the social aspect of it that really pulled him in. We really bonded on the golf course.”
Going forward, Brian will likely share that bond with his own kids on the golf course. His father will be there with him, although now it will be forever different. Brian’s dad passed away this summer, unexpectedly, after spending one last perfect day with his wife, Rosemary. Now, when he takes to the golf course, Brian will have his dad with him as an angel on his shoulder, his life lessons staying with him, steadying him, moving him forward. And probably helping him drop that shot that might…just…go…in. Joe had always said “move forward and carry on.” “His positivity radiated,” Brian explains. “He’d barrel into my office when I was having a bad day, he’d listen to me, and I’d realize that it wasn’t that bad.” When Joe passed, Brian heard hundreds of stories from people whose lives Joe had changed for the better. None of that came as a surprise to him, or his family. Help people when you can, Joe would say. If you get to know Brian, you’ll know that Joe’s legacy is secure. Family is everything to Brian, whether you’re a relative, friend, or business family. It’s been Joe’s way, it’s Brian’s way, it’s the Skaff way. “My mom and dad built a remarkable family. I’m lucky to have learned what family’s all about from the best in the business, both of them. I’m grateful to be able to say that I was raised by my hero.” Complete Computer Solutions is at 504 Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne, right by the North Jersey Country Club golf course, because of course it is. FINDING GRATITUDE IN THE SIMPLEST PLEASURES
Thankfulness is often an unconscious thing. We don’t regularly make it an active part of our lives. We might think about the big things that we’re grateful for, but miss out on the minutiae that bring us joy. Thanksgiving should be more than just a Thursday in November.

Cherish the Small Things
“The author with his dad, grateful for what’s yet to come.”
I often think of my dad’s last day. We lost him unexpectedly around the holidays 15 years ago; he’d passed away in bed after the briefest of illnesses. As he got himself into his bed, how could he have known that his feet would be leaving the ground for the last time? Memories of that day make me think of the little things of life. The moments that bring joy, and how mindlessly fleeting they are. Will you be aware of the simple lasts of your life? Will you realize when you’re having your last ice cream cone? What about blowing out your last birthday candles? Your last Christmas tree? How about sharing that old inside joke that will now fall silent? Or cheering for your favorite team for the final time? Or berating them for yet another frustrating loss — the last you’ll see? Your last meal. Likely not your favorite. Maybe it’s just a frozen pizza. Whatever it is, it likely won’t be well thought out as something momentous. Watching the last episode of your favorite TV show — which will go on without you, the story eternally unresolved. Your last hot shower. Your last time outside. When you hear your favorite song from high school on the radio, and sing along — confidently, without missing a word — never to be heard again. “One last game…” The last time your dog showers you with unbridled, pure affection when you get home. Your last first Spring day that’s warm and sunny enough that you finally don’t need to wear a jacket. You’ve worn a winter coat for the last time. The last time you’ll smell salt air. Or a bakery. Or great coffee, just brewed. The last beautiful sunset you’ll see. Your last date night. The last time you’ll hear your children’s voices. Your last “I love you.” What’s undeniable is that all of these things will eventually be true. For the vast majority of us, we won’t know when that will be. As for me, I plan to spend a little bit of my time during these simple joys appreciating them, to make them count. One day, inevitably, they won’t come again. Simple joys make our journey through this life far more scenic. Gather those rosebuds. Make your thankfulness a conscious thing — I know I will.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”

This Year,
DO A L I T T L E BE T T ER T H A N “OU T OF T HE C A N” HOMEMADE CRANBERRY SAUCE COURTESY OF LOCAL MONTVILLE MOM, DIANA R. THANKS DIANA! ARTICLE BY DIANA R.
As our family has grown beyond my husband (Tim) and me, I have found it important to make things as special as I can for everyone, especially during the holidays. I wanted to share one of the easier changes I made to Thanksgiving Dinner that brought even more of that “homemade” feel to it. My homemade cranberry sauce is something my daughters can share with their families way (WAY) down the road and I wanted to share it with you.
C R A NB E R R Y S A U C E INGREDIENTS • 2 oz rinsed cranberries (no damaged ones) • 2/3 cup white sugar • 1/3 cup light brown sugar • 2/3 cup orange juice • 1/3 cup water DIRECTIONS Combine both sugars, orange juice, and water in a medium-sized saucepan (medium heat). Stir occasionally until the sugars dissolve, and bring to a boil. Add in the cranberries and then return to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and then continue to cook cranberries, stirring occasionally (usually about 10-15 minutes or until most of the berries have burst). Note: The longer you cook the cranberries, the thicker your sauce will be, but it will also thicken up after standing so don’t overdo it. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and cool for 20-30 minutes at room temperature. Cover and then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
