The Explore Issue

Making Space to Explore

We live in a world that values productivity and efficiency, where every moment seems to be mapped out and planned. I’ll admit, I fall into this mindset sometimes, too, thinking that the only worthwhile activities are those that can be measured, calculated, and optimized. But the truth is, a life that is too structured is missing something vital — space for exploration.

We need room for discovery, for trying new things, for being a beginner. Sometimes, it’s in those unplanned moments where connections are made, memories are created, and trust is built. In recent months, I’ve been reflecting on how my family spends our time together. We’ve realized that our happiest moments often come when we step away from screens and routines. Our "adventures" don’t always involve grand trips. They could be as simple as playing a board game on the patio, trying out a new trail, or exploring a new part of town to find a quirky little café.

This issue is all about giving yourself permission to explore. Whether it’s a spontaneous trip, a new hobby, or simply making time for those unstructured moments with the people you love.

Someone who has become an expert at this type of exploration is Jess Heuer, aka The Minnesota Gal on Instagram. Jess explores and features all things Minnesota, proving that our great state and our great community offer plenty of these unforgettable experiences — experiences that are creative, enjoyable, and rewarding. Whether we partake with friends, family, or a new group, these unique outings allow us to grow and prosper close to home.

Let’s make space for the unexpected and the unexplored, and remember that it’s often in these moments that the richest connections are formed.

Happy exploring!

A COMMUNITY WITH HEART

Curious WHAT YOUR HOME IS WORTH?

Minnesota Gal ADVENTURES WITH THE

Learn why Jess Heuer, The Minnesota Gal, calls herself a Minnesota travel expert — and what you can learn from her.

If you think you’re Minnesota’s biggest fan, think again. Jess Heuer, known to her followers as The Minnesota Gal, loves to travel, has a huge heart for local businesses, and hasn’t been on an airplane in a decade — she’s been busy showing off everything Minnesota has to offer instead, so you do the math. She’s a local travel influencer whose energy and passion come through in all of her interactions and content, inspiring others to explore the hometown favorites and hidden gems that make Minnesota one-of-a-kind.

WHAT SPARKED YOUR JOURNEY AS A MINNESOTA TRAVEL INFLUENCER, AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SHARING YOUR ADVENTURES ONLINE?

I began by sharing my deep love of the North Shore. I wondered if there were other people out there who shared the same sentiment. The biggest thing I saw missing in the Minnesota travel industry was how to find affordability and fun. I’m a person who looks for the best value while traveling, and there wasn’t a lot of information out there like that. That quickly expanded to sharing my love for the whole state.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT EXPLORING MINNESOTA AND HIGHLIGHTING LOCAL COMMUNITIES?

In general, my favorite thing is the people I meet along the way, but the best thing about highlighting local communities is bringing customers through businesses’ doors because they saw them featured on my page. It warms my heart to help businesses, especially small Minnesota-owned ones.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN WACONIA TO VISIT, EAT, SHOP, OR UNWIND?

My favorite thing about Waconia is that even though it’s expanding, it still has the small-town charm. It’s great having the lake nearby, because I love water sports, especially paddleboarding and wake surfing. My favorite place to eat is on the deck at Lola’s Lakehouse with the view of the water. Their Brussels sprouts are the best. I like to shop at The Stash when I am feeling a bit fancier for my travels and Shape It Up Fitness and Athleisure Boutique for comfy on-the-go wear and for my workouts. Two other standout spots for me are Lakehouse Candle Co. and Lakeside Loft. CONTINUED >

WHEN YOU’RE CREATING CONTENT, WHAT MAKES A DESTINATION OR EXPERIENCE STAND OUT TO YOU?

I like to find things that aren’t the everyday norm. I’m passionate about finding hidden gems and lesser-known places that I can share with others.

WHAT’S ONE MINNESOTA ADVENTURE OR EXPERIENCE YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD TRY AT LEAST ONCE?

Everyone needs to do a sunrise paddleboard tour in Duluth with Zenith Adventure. I promise it’s worth the early alarm. You paddle under the lift bridge at sunrise. It’s an incredible experience and so beautiful.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BUILDING YOUR PLATFORM AND CONNECTING WITH YOUR AUDIENCE?

Hands-down, the people I’ve met, some of whom have become great friends. So much can happen when you find like-minded people and put them together. I’m also so thankful for the experiences that my family and I get to have, creating lifelong memories.

Coney’s Candies opens this summer, blending old-fashioned charm, sweet treats, and community connection

The Sweetest New Spot on Main Street

Sweet dreams are Crystal Jensen’s specialty. Owner of Candie Clouds, which serves up gourmet cotton candy confections, Crystal’s new venture is just as irresistible. Welcome to Coney’s Candies.

“Coney’s Candies came about when I was in search of a commercial kitchen to expand Candie Clouds,” explains Crystal. “I had the opportunity to purchase the building at 136 West Main Street that was formerly home to Bakery on Main, and once I stepped into this beautiful, historic building, I knew that it didn’t quite fit the glossy, pink, modern feel of Candie Clouds, but instead the building felt like something much more nostalgic.”

“This century-old building was here when Coney Island of the West in Waconia was in its heyday,” says Crystal. “In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people would travel through this area, stay at the resort on Coney Island, and the community would come out to celebrate summer. And so I decided the building was the perfect fit for an old-fashioned candy store and soda shop.”

Staying true to the historic space, Crystal is keeping as many original details as possible. “The back bar that has been there since the coffee shop Frost & Steam was in this space was a big inspiration in keeping the late 1800s atmosphere alive,” says Crystal. “We also discovered there was this beautiful old wooden floor underneath the vinyl that we’ll restore. I’ve been working with the Waconia Historical Society to learn more about the history of the area, Coney Island, and the space, so we can really honor those who owned the building and came before us. In that spirit, you’ll see antique life preservers, oars, and other nautical-themed decor.”

So what can you order up at Coney’s Candies? You can get your fill of Swedish candy that’s free of artificial dyes, ice cream from

The Main Scoop, which will be moving into Coney’s Candies’ space, and dirty sodas, the latest trend that combines soda with flavored syrups, creamer, and a squeeze of fresh citrus.

“The classic dirty soda combo, and my personal favorite, is a mix of Dr. Pepper, vanilla syrup, and coconut cream,” says Crystal. “We’ll carry both Coke and Pepsi so everyone can have their preferred base. My four daughters and I were really excited to work through the naming process for each of the dirty soda combos.

The Dr. Pepper combo will be called the Classic Coney, and the other 20 different flavors will have lake-themed and nostalgic, era-inspired names.”

At Coney’s grand opening this summer, Crystal is releasing a limited edition 40-ounce Stanley tumbler. “When you purchase your Coney’s Stanley, your first drink is free!” exclaims Crystal. “Then you can bring it back anytime for a $1 off your dirty soda drink. We plan on releasing a new Stanley design every year.”

But what Crystal looks forward to the most about Coney’s?

Creating a space for community. “I’m most excited to create a space where the community can come create their own memories, and especially be a safe space for kids to come hang out. I really want the younger crowd to see Coney’s as a great place to gather, connect, be heard and seen, and experience that sense of belonging in a community.”

“I’m happy to have a bigger part in the community with this space,” says Crystal. “The opening is already so much bigger than I was anticipating. “The support and excitement from the community has been overwhelming.”

A New Spark for Waconia’s Fireworks

Sovereign Estate Winery steps in to keep Waconia’s iconic fireworks show alive with a weekend full of music, wine, and community celebration

This Independence Day, the pyrotechnic torch is being passed. Sovereign Estate Winery is stepping up to take charge of one of Waconia’s favorite summer traditions: the 4th of July fireworks.

“The Fourth of July is personally my favorite holiday,” says Isaac Savaryn, owner and VP of Vineyard Operations at Sovereign Estate Winery. “I have so many memories as a kid going out on the boat to watch the fireworks with my family after a long day filled with time on the lake, grilling by the pool, or just running around the yard. The fireworks were always the perfect way to cap off the day. I know there are so many other people who have those same memories, and when I heard the Waconia Chamber was looking for someone new to take on the show, I figured it was almost my civic duty to continue it.”

“When I heard the Waconia Chamber was looking for someone new to take on the show, I figured it was almost my civic duty to continue it.”

And this 4th of July is a special one. It’s America’s 250th anniversary. For Isaac, helping the next generation and young kids create those same core memories he had growing up is so special. And the fireworks are everything. “Over 10,000 people watch the fireworks every year here,” explains Isaac. “Whether it’s at Sovereign Estate, the beach, or from a boat. Keeping this tradition alive is so important because it brings the community together. We’re hoping families and friends experience a truly memorable start to their Fourth of July weekend!”

The community did indeed come together when they heard Isaac and the Sovereign team were taking on the fireworks this year. “The local community has been very supportive. I’m so thankful they were able to see the importance of keeping this tradition alive. Financially, it was a bit intimidating,

but fortunately, I have had incredible support from the Waconia Lions, the Waconia Chamber, the Hoffmans, Sovereign Estate Winery, and Greg James from Iron Tap,” says Isaac. “I am always open to more funding, as that would make for a bigger show!”

This year, the fireworks will take place on Friday, July 3, kicking off the long holiday weekend, and the show will now be on the north shore of Lake Waconia, creating even more viewing opportunities. “Watching from the beach or by boat will both be fantastic options,” says Isaac. “We’re anticipating a phenomenal turnout. I’ve hired a great pyrotechnic company to design and organize the show, so it’ll sure to be a fun, community-centered celebration where people can relax, enjoy great entertainment, and take in one of the best fireworks shows in the area.”

The Independence Day festivities at Sovereign will start well before sundown, however. Isaac says, “We’ll be hosting an all-day celebration with live music, food, wine, and an Elvis Tribute Concert leading up to the fireworks show. A portion of ticket sales from the event will be donated back to the Waconia Fireworks Festival to help support next year’s celebration.”

The Fireworks Festival is just the start at Sovereign. “We have so much going on this summer,” says Isaac.

“From concerts, to festivals, to wine tastings, and cabana rentals where you and your party can enjoy a more intimate dining experience, there’s something happening almost every weekend that guests won’t want to miss.”

Live music plays every Friday and Sunday, along with their Vintage Concert series on select Saturdays, where you can catch your favorite tribute bands at Sovereign’s Marquette Pavilion. Coming up on July 11 is a Johnny Cash Tribute Concert, followed by the ABBA & Elton Tribute Concert, which, personally, we’re very excited for.

“We’ve also introduced a great new menu that pairs phenomenally with our wines,” Isaac says, “creating an experience that goes far beyond just wine tasting.”

But their delicious food isn’t the only new item on the menu for Sovereign. “We’ve got plans for a new and exciting building that will expand our offerings as a tasting room, restaurant, and private event space that we can utilize all year,” shares Isaac. “We’re looking at breaking ground in the fall of 2026 and will have more information to come, so we’re excited for the community to follow along on our journey!”

This summer, Sovereign Estate Winery is truly the place to be.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Music Brings Connection to Westview Acres

A PARTNERSHIP WITH MACPHAIL CENTER FOR MUSIC IS ENRICHING RESIDENTS’ LIVES THROUGH A COMMUNITY-BASED SINGING PROGRAM

ARTICLE BY EMILY MCKEEVER

When you or a loved one moves into Westview Acres at Good Samaritan Society in Waconia, you’ll have everything needed to maintain a healthy, active, and fulfilling lifestyle. From senior living through rehabilitation therapy to long-term care, their community supports residents through every level of care. But there’s more to care than nutritious meals and on-site therapists. It’s about joy, connection, and engagement, and that’s exactly what the music programming offered there, in partnership with MacPhail Center for Music, provides.   Director of Life Enrichment, Wellness, and Volunteer Services, Denise Leonhardt, explains that this partnership began three years ago when Westview Acres applied for and received a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. “The grant offers opportunities that support accessible and inclusive arts across Minnesota, including initiatives focused on accessibility improvements, arts education, community arts experiences, cultural expression, and general operating support for arts organizations.” Programs like these also help expand access to the arts, strengthen learning, and support meaningful cultural engagement. The sessions create a meaningful impact for everyone involved, whether residents are participating or simply watching.

Depending on the class, sessions may be held weekly or monthly, with programs varying in format and duration, and all are held in the facility’s community areas.

SING FOR LIFE

Sing for Life is a group singing series that focuses on healthy vocal techniques through themed weekly sessions. “Each class includes background information about selected songs along with guided instruction in vocal skills,” Denise explains. Along with guidance on developing healthy singing practices, this

interactive singing experience creates an engaging opportunity that combines music education with personal enrichment.

MACPHAIL HOUR

This monthly session is a hands-on performance series that features one-hour presentations by MacPhail teaching artists. During this guided hour, residents experience a dynamic, educational session that highlights music within its social, historical, and cultural contexts. A variety of classical, popular, jazz, and folk music is explored with an emphasis on dialogue and engagement between performers and audience.

PLAY FOR LIFE - UKULELE CLASS

Small-group instruction with individualized support is provided during this introductory ukulele class. “Participants build skills through a sequential learning approach, learning to play in unison and, when possible, in harmony.” Benefits include posture, coordination, listening skills, teamwork, and self-esteem. It all comes together at the end of the series, when they present a final performance highlighting the participants’ learning and achievements.

UNWRAPPING MUSIC

The music appreciation class explores topics in music history and appreciation through lectures, audio and video, and live performances. Each session highlights a different composer, performer, musical style, or genre, and their impact on music history.

It’s widely known that music benefits people of all ages, but in a retirement community setting, they become even more meaningful. “Music can have a powerful positive impact on residents by improving mood, reducing stress and anxiety, and creating feelings of comfort and joy,” she shares. “Socially, music encourages connection through singing, dancing, shared memories, and group activities, helping reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.” Familiar songs can stimulate memory recall, increase alertness, and support

communication, especially for residents living with dementia or memory loss, and, Denise says, it’s just fun to hear the music, learn, and sing along to the songs.

And the benefits go both ways. Denise adds that this partnership provides musicians and students from the MacPhail Center for Music with meaningful opportunities to share their talents while gaining valuable experience performing for diverse audiences. It also helps them develop empathy and community engagement skills by building relationships with residents and seeing firsthand how music can impact others’ lives. “I believe that the performers genuinely enjoy bringing joy to our seniors.”

Because these offerings are so highly attended at Westview Acres, they’ve already applied for the 2027 grant, and if there’s no additional grant money available, they’ll explore community donations and other support opportunities to help sustain the programming, as "we have received such positive feedback from residents, families, staff, and the broader community."
