This August issue may be the most meaningful one to me. Children are the absolute focus for us as parents. There is nothing more rewarding than watching our children grow and succeed – with friends, on the playground, in sports, or in everyday life. Not only in their younger years while we are raising them, but also as they grow into young adults and graduate from school, then into parents raising children of their own.
Parents raise children, but communities play a significant role as well. We are fortunate to live in a community with so many other role models. Family friends, teachers, coaches, and mentors all come together to shape our youth.
As parents and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us. They bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our everyday lives and remind us of why it’s so important to set a good example. Just remember, they are always watching and listening.
But we also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.
The bond between adults and pets can be equally transformative. In our family, we never considered owning a pet at first. We were far too busy juggling a multitude of sports and activities for our three kids. Then, in a weak moment, I was finally convinced by my daughter to get a dog.
Reluctant at first, I observed how our dog Harlow formed an immediate bond with all three of our children. A bond that remains strong today.
Fast forward to empty nest-hood, my wife and I have formed that same bond. We can’t imagine life without our mini golden. She fills a void during quiet times, plays joyfully any time you want, and always offers unconditional love.
I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love and support.
Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better. Cheers!

At LuceLine Orchard, summer isn’t just a season – it’s an invitation for families and friends to slow down, explore, and savor the outdoors together. For owners Rich Pawelk and Terri Traen, their orchard has never been just about the apples; it’s about the moments families make together.
Rich and Terri grew up on farms and spent the early part of their marriage working the land alongside Rich’s family. When life pulled them in a different direction, they stepped away from the farm and pursued a new path
with three young children in tow. Rich transitioned into a role with a food distributor, while Terri brought her warmth and energy to the morning show on 92 KQRS. It was a new chapter, full of opportunity, but the rhythm of farm life and the love for the land never fully left them. Over time, they felt the pull back to a place where their roots – and their hearts – felt familiar. In 2004, they purchased a farm and began building their next adventure from the ground up. Three years later, the first 300 apple trees were planted. The first acre of grapes followed just

two years after. With the help of friends, family, and former colleagues, their vision kept growing, eventually reaching nearly 10,000 apple trees and six acres of grapes. And in September of 2012, that dream officially became LuceLine Orchard, a sprawling 155-acre property located in Watertown on the Luce Line Trail.
If you’ve never been to LuceLine Orchard, it’s time to add it to your list. It’s not just an orchard, it’s an experience. This isn’t the kind of place where you simply stop by to pick a pumpkin or grab a bag of apples. Of course, you can still do that, whether you prefer to wander the rows and pick your own or choose from the beautifully curated selections inside the orchard’s restored 1907 barn. However, a visit to LuceLine is so much more. After 26 years in the corporate world, Kristi Clay found herself asking a question many people wrestled with during the pandemic: What's next?
She wasn't looking for another corporate role. She wanted to build something of her own.
"When COVID hit, I felt like it was time to try something different," Kristi says.
As she explored business opportunities, a broker introduced her to Pet Evolution. The concept was a neighborhood pet store centered on nutrition, wellness, and education, and it immediately stood out. Kristi had never worked in retail, but she had something even more important: a lifelong love of animals.
"I've had a pet since I was four years old," she says. "I just couldn't stop thinking about the Pet Evolution model because it aligned with what was important to me personally."
Three years after opening Pet Evolution in Chanhassen, Kristi has built more than a pet store. She has created a destination where pet owners find practical advice,
trusted products, and services to help their companions live longer, healthier lives. This broader vision shapes every aspect of the experience she offers.
That comprehensive approach to pet care begins with nutrition.
Rather than just selling pet food, Kristi and her team take the time to help owners understand what their pet actually needs. Breed, size, age, and activity level all play a role in choosing the right diet. A growing puppy has different nutritional needs than an aging dog, while a large-breed dog may benefit from additional joint support and appropriately sized kibble.
She's also a believer in dietary variety.
Kristi encourages pet owners to mix things up rather than feeding the same food for years. Rotating proteins and incorporating raw, gently cooked, or freeze-dried foods can help provide a wider range of nutrients, and she believes even small changes can make a difference.
"A little is better than none," she says, encouraging owners to consider incorporating fresh, gently cooked, freeze-dried, or raw foods when appropriate.
It's also one of the first places she looks when a pet isn't feeling its best.
"A lot of people assume their dog has environmental allergies," she says. "Sometimes it's worth taking a closer
look at what's in their food or whether gut health could be part of the issue."
Of course, nutrition is just one part of keeping pets healthy. Exercise, grooming, and regular socialization all play an important role, too.
Pet Evolution offers full-service grooming for dogs of every size; a point of pride for Kristi, who notes that some grooming salons turn away larger breeds. The store also features self-service dog wash stations, making it easy for families to clean up after a muddy walk, a trip to the dog park, or even a day in the field with a hunting dog. For added convenience, a mobile grooming van provides services like nail trims and brush-outs for pets that don't need a full grooming appointment.
"It's really about meeting pet owners where they are," Kristi says.
That philosophy extends beyond the store's walls.
This summer, Kristi and two of her groomers participated in Kids for Canines, a camp sponsored by one of the local rescue organizations Pet Evolution supports.
During the program, children learned everything from proper brushing and bathing techniques to understanding dog behavior and body language.
One of Kristi's favorite parts of the camp is helping kids understand what dogs are trying to tell them. A wagging tail might be an invitation to play. A dog that turns away, pins its ears back, or squints its eyes may be asking for some space instead. Those are simple lessons, but they can make a big difference in helping kids feel comfortable and confident around dogs.
Kristi also believes caring for animals teaches children valuable life lessons.
She says pets naturally teach kids responsibility. Helping fill the food bowl, brushing the dog, going for walks, or making time to play all become part of caring for another living thing. At the same time, those everyday moments help dogs get the exercise, attention, and stimulation they need.
Supporting rescue animals is another important part of Pet Evolution's mission. The store partners with local organizations, including Spots Last Stop and

Warrior Dog Rescue, to help more pets find loving homes. It's a cause that resonates with Kristi's team, many of whom have adopted rescue pets themselves.
Kristi is quick to point to her team when asked what she's most proud of. Several employees who started with her when the store opened have since become professional groomers, turning what began as a job into a rewarding career they hadn't planned on.
"Nothing has been more fulfilling than watching my team members grow," she says.
As Pet Evolution approaches its third anniversary this summer, Kristi remains focused on the same mission that first inspired her to take a leap into entrepreneurship: helping pets live healthier, happier lives.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

“The concept when building the Olivine was really, how can we take this fantastic piece of land situated on Carver Park Reserve and create a community that blends the best of both the natural environment and the convenience of downtown Victoria,” says Brenda Hvambsal,

• 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yogurt (or dog-safe yogurt alternative)
• 1/2 cup of unsweetened, plain applesauce
• 1/4 cup of water or low-sodium chicken broth
1. Mix the yogurt, applesauce, and water or chicken broth in a bowl until well combined.
2. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds.
3. Freeze for several hours or until solid.
4. Serve the frozen treats to your dog to help them cool off!

Beating the Dog Days of Summer with a Canine Treat
Summer is in full swing, and on any day that ends in a Y, you’ll find Minnesotans enjoying the fresh air and soaking up the sun. While there’s so much to love this time of year, it’s also important to stay aware of the hazards that can accompany all that outdoor fun. Our furry friends are no exception, and keeping them safe is just as important as keeping the rest of the family protected. Dr. Jessica Radtke Maltez and her team at Victoria Veterinary Hospital are committed to keeping our pets safe year-round. In the summer, though, extra planning and a watchful eye can help ensure our four-legged family members make the most of the season safely – with plenty of happy purrs and tail wags along the way.
“Heat exhaustion can seem to happen suddenly because people often miss the signs. The dog seems fine, until they aren’t.” Dr. Jessica says excessive panting can be an indicator that a dog is overheating, which often begins after outdoor activity in hot, humid weather. She

suggests planning times to find shaded rest as well as taking breaks in the air conditioning. “Heat exhaustion can cause vomiting, stumbling, and collapsing. Once you’re at that point, it can be a crisis, and you would need urgent help.” If you do see signs of overheating in your pet, she advises placing cold rags on your pet’s extremities and rubbing cool water all over their body. She recommends avoiding sudden cold water dips or spraying your animal with the hose, as it can shock the body and slow proper cooling. Instead, Dr. Jessica prescribes air conditioning, a cool fan, offering water if they’ll drink it, and contacting your vet.
A mild reaction from a bee sting includes redness and tenderness at the site. A more serious reaction is sudden weakness and rapid respirations. “You’ll know that your pet is having a serious reaction if they’re vomiting and have rapid breathing. If they were to collapse, it would happen within minutes of the sting.” Dr. Jessica says Benadryl can be given if available — 25 milligrams per 25 pounds of dog — but cautions pet owners to call their vet first, if possible, to discuss symptoms and confirm the correct dosage.
“Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are a bigger issue for dogs because the compounds that cause symptoms are present in higher quantities, which makes them more potent.” Dr. Jessica emphasizes calling your vet immediately, as symptoms don’t appear right away, and prompt action may be necessary. Your vet will need to know how much was ingested and how long it’s been in the dog’s system. She notes that the Pet Poison Hotline, petpoisonhelpline.com, is also a great resource.
Water presents a variety of risks for dogs, from swimming accidents to exposure to bacteria found
in standing water. Dr. Jessica stresses the importance of keeping up to date with the Leptospirosis vaccine, which helps protect from bacteria commonly found in standing water. “Ingesting a lot of water into their lungs, especially for older dogs, can be a major issue.”
Dogs who really enjoy swimming can easily overdo it and sprain their tail, so enforcing downtime is important. Dr. Jessica warns that skin and ear infections can also develop after a splash-filled outing and recommends an ear-cleansing solution to help prevent them. She also notes that gently rinsing your dog with a hose after a day at the beach is essential, but advises against brushing while their skin is wet, as this can increase the risk of infection.
With many kids home alone in the summer, Dr. Jessica returns to the idea of being prepared. “Let your kids know who they should call if they suspect your pet is in distress,” she explains. She goes on to say that setting a daily routine and keeping animals primarily indoors when adults are away is a great way to keep pets safe. She also recommends putting together a simple firstaid kit to have on hand for unexpected situations that could arise during the summer.
The kit should include:
• Vet wrap (self-adhesive bandage)
• Benadryl
• Gauze
• Chlorhexidine solution (for cleaning wounds)
• Rags or old towels for cooling the pet’s extremities.
