LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Waconia City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. As I age, I fondly remember myself a few pounds ago. If I look in the mirror and squint just right, I can see a 30-year-old with no advancing gray beyond the temples and fewer lines around the eyes. Then I realize I’ve earned all those crevices and cracks and a bit of excess around the middle. The most important thing is how I feel and what I can still do. As long as I can enjoy the company of my wife, kids, and friends. As long as I can do the activities I enjoy, being beyond middle age suits me just fine. All I seek is a healthy balance of fun, faith, and fitness, enabling me to live my best life now. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! It’s not the sometimes choices we make; it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that decadent dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling, and fabulous year. Here’s to you, and a happy new year!

EXPERIENCE THE MENTAL & PHYSICAL REWARDS OF DANCE WITH CULTIVATE DANCE COLLABORATIVE ARTICLE BY LUTIE RONGLIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CROWN OF LIFE PHOTO AND VIDEO

Co-owners Madelyn Burnham and Melissa Brown Guenther
Cultivate Dance Collaborative in downtown Waconia is one of the newest dance studios in the area. Co-owners Maddie Burnham and Melissa Brown Guenther both hold degrees in dance. Maddie has been teaching and producing work with her dance company, 8:20, for the past five years. Melissa has also produced her own work and has been teaching dance for over 20 years. Maddie and Melissa started Cultivate this past September. They wanted a space where dancers feel supported in their growth through dance. “We value technique here at Cultivate and feel that we set ourselves apart with educated, professional teachers that know their art form,” Melissa says. Currently enrolled with over 90 students, Cultivate offers classes in several styles, including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, continuum modern, and creative movement. Their students, both boys and girls, range in age from three to 18.
“At Cultivate we believe dance is for everyone. We strive to create a space where everyone can feel comfortable and welcome to explore movement at their own pace, level, and style.”

“Dance does so much for the body.”

I NSP IR E D BY | SP O RTS + RE CRE AT ION
If you’re looking for a dance studio to enroll children, choosing the right one can be difficult, with so many great ones in the area. What sets Cultivate apart, according to Maddie and Melissa, is their strong technical focus in all of their classes, their one-on-one approach with all students, and a welcoming and warm environment at the studio. Proof of the impact Cultivate has on their students lies in the students themselves. One student, Shay, says, “Dance is the way in which I see the world, the way I process my emotions, and really my one true love. It is a healthy exercise outlet that also keeps me occupied in my free time, although sometimes maybe a little bit too occupied! Dance is also a way for me to keep my mental health in check. I’ve danced through failed tests, breakups, and so much more.” Not only is dance physically beneficial, but it’s also mentally therapeutic. It offers a way to be creative and gives people an outlet to work through stress. “Dance does so much for the body,” Maddie says. “It helps build muscle, stamina, flexibility, and endurance. Not only that, it conditions the body to physically hold itself with confidence and pride.” For those of us who don’t want to hit the gym or use our Peloton at home, dance offers a great alternative to get exercise. Dance benefits your cardiovascular, bone,
and muscle health and can help people feel more socially connected. This can help with the winter doldrums many of us feel this time of year. Cultivate just started offering different adult dance classes for ages 18 and up. At the time of writing this article, they offer three adult drop-in classes: ballet, ballroom (no partner required), and contemporary fusion. Each adult class is $20 and is about an hour. This offers a fun opportunity for adults to try something new, sharpen their dance skills, and get out of the house in the winter for some activity. Plus, dance classes may help alleviate a bit of the embarrassment some of us may feel when dancing in public. ”At Cultivate we believe dance is for everyone,” says Melissa. “We strive to create a space where everyone can feel comfortable and welcome to explore movement at their own pace, level, and style.” So, for those of you who have a bunch of weddings or other events to attend next summer, maybe it’s time to sign up for a class so you can show off your moves on the dance floor. You can check out all they have to offer at www.cultivatedancecollaborative.com. Interested in attending a spring performance? They have shows April 5 - 7, and their end-of-year recital is May 30 - June 1. Classes run September - May.

Before you set the thermostat low, leave a few lights on and lock up to enjoy a family getaway, there’s a heckuva lot to do. From packing suitcases to cleaning up your inbox at work, it’s a wonder you get out of the house on time and in one piece. There’s also the house to get prepped and the non-human children to get squared away. Call the pet sitter, ask the neighbor to take time out of her busy day to water your plants, don’t forget to hire the kid down the street to shovel, and oh - stop mail service for the week! If only there were a way to lighten the before-thetrip load so you can focus more of your efforts on swimsuit shopping…to minimize your to-dos… to actually feel a little calm after you leave. You’re in luck! Northern Nest Services is a professional home watch company that keeps an eye on your home when you can’t. They offer an extensive list of services tailored to each homeowner’s needs, such as watering plants, collecting mail (ahem, Amazon packages!), checking plumbing, and ensuring pools or spas are running smoothly, and you receive a detailed email report after every visit. We asked Laura Schuh, who owns Northern Nest Services with her husband Matt, some questions so you can get acquainted and think of them the next time you’re heading out of town. Hint hint, spring break is right around the corner!
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START THIS COMPANY?
Northern Nest kicked off in the summer of 2023. We were looking to start a business where we could help people, and the idea came to us while we were preparing for our own family vacation. We were both working full time, with kids at home and backyard chickens. We don’t have relatives nearby to ask for help, and our neighbors are all busy raising families of their own, so asking them to check on the house was a real burden.
We realized helping people manage their houses while away fit well with our professional backgrounds, experience taking care of our own houses, and work building the family cabin. We all work so hard year-round and put our hearts into our homes. When we finally get the opportunity to take a break and travel, that precious time should not be wasted worrying about what’s happening back home.
TELL ME ABOUT THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE FOR YOUR CLIENTS.
We provide regularly scheduled, custom, on-site visual inspections of your home’s interior and exterior, looking for obvious issues. Homeowners receive a detailed report, including photos for each visit. If a concern does arise, it will be immediately communicated, and Northern Nest can act as the homeowner’s advocate to remedy the situation. We also offer ancillary services, like help with sensor setup, restocking your fridge before you return, or letting in and/or monitoring other vendors. We love making our clients’ lives just a little less stressful.
WHAT ROLE DOES PEACE OF MIND PLAY IN THE SERVICES THAT YOU OFFER?
Peace of mind and mental wellness are integral to the services we offer. Truly enjoying your time away from home can be challenging when your mind is preoccupied with “what ifs.” Some people opt to leave their homes unattended while away, hoping for the best, but this can lead to a constant undercurrent of worry and uncertainty about weather, squatters, home mechanics, and the like. Asking a family member or neighbor for help also comes with its own set of concerns. Additionally, there’s the question of whether those assisting them possess the time and ability to handle unexpected situations. CONTINUED >
JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / WAC O N I A
17
Our ultimate objective is to alleviate these worries by serving as our clients’ eyes, ears, and helping hands while they are away. A stress-free mind is a key contributor to enhanced mental wellness, and it significantly enhances the enjoyment and relaxation of every trip for our clients.
WHAT DO YOUR CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE?
“I recently had the pleasure of utilizing the home watch service provided by Northern Nest Services, and I must say it was an exceptional experience. The owners were incredibly prompt and responsive, providing us with regular updates and even sending pictures of our home while we were away. Their attention to detail and thoroughness in ensuring the security and maintenance of our property gave us immense peace of mind throughout our absence. The level of professionalism and dedication displayed by Northern Nest Services is truly commendable, and I would highly recommend their services to anyone in need of reliable home watch assistance.” - Alison H, Chanhassen

WITH SPRING BREAK SEASON AROUND THE CORNER, CAN YOU SHARE THE VALUE OF HAVING A HOME WATCH COMPANY OVERSEE YOUR PROPERTY WHILE YOU’RE AWAY?
Our services are not exclusive to long-term travelers like snowbirds; they extend to individuals facing unforeseen hospital stays, work relocations, difficulties selling a home, or other life disruptions. Moreover, even when taking a short trip like spring break, vacationers encounter the challenge of preparing for their trips, which can be quite overwhelming on its own. On top of packing and travel arrangements, there are always those lingering matters back home that demand attention – plants, pets, mail, garbage, packages, and more. Northern Nest is here to help you maintain control over your home-related responsibilities so that you can fully focus on being present during your travels. This added peace of mind and freedom to enjoy your vacation can make all the difference. https://NorthernNestServices.com

January is notoriously the month of reflection and resolution. Largely, these tend to center around an individual’s weight, appearance, or overall health. If this is you, keep reading. There’s a local resource you may not have been familiar with, and I’m here to introduce you to the nutritional guidance you probably didn’t realize was so close to home. Something that will help transform that resolution into a reward.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Andrew Akhaphong, a Registered and Licensed Dietitian with Mackenthun’s Fine Foods. His role helps promote HAES®, one of the company’s practiced philosophies with their health and wellness services. HAES®, Health at Every Size, is a holistic approach that promotes health and well-being for people of all sizes. “I have a large interest in gut health and weight loss due to personal experiences prior to becoming a registered and licensed dietitian,” shares Andrew. Andrew meets his customers, clients, and patients exactly where they are and supports them by helping them understand that small adjustments to their lifestyle can make incremental differences, and those add up over time! “People don’t realize that even just one intervention can make a big impact,” says Andrew. Andrew isn’t here to make you feel guilty for overeating or consuming too much during the holidays (or any other time of the year). He’s here to get you started so that you can make conscious choices for your health that will allow you to experience the boundless energy that comes from reducing the risk of chronic disease, enhancing your body’s resilience, and ultimately supporting your overall quality of life. Health is wealth. “Sometimes a customer or client just needs me to fill in the blanks,” says Andrew. “A simple way to change a diet is to evaluate your protein vs. carb intake. Where can you cut sugar and fill up on protein instead?” Andrew is currently working on his doctorate in Clinical Nutrition but also possesses a certification in culinary arts. He offers nutrition and culinary education, meal planning support, and medical nutrition therapy. Medical nutrition therapy is a service that allows him to collaborate with a patient’s physician to review their blood work, medications, and current diagnoses to help determine how nutrition plays a role in managing their care. Many don’t realize that certain interactions with foods and medications
24

can disrupt or affect their health. His expertise allows him to triage some of the concerns that his clients might have, and together, they address dietary needs that may help the individual lose weight, reduce risk, increase the consumption of essential nutrients, and/or help them uncover connections with foods that affect their gut health. Those symptoms alone can often affect a person’s weight and well-being. If mindful eating and focused nutrition are things that you struggle with, you’re not alone. Social media, television, advertisements, convenience, and time. They all contribute to the pressures we fall victim to, making it challenging to stay on track. Diet is the number one thing that most Americans struggle with when it comes to weight loss or dealing with gut health issues like food sensitivities. Exercise is important, but you can never outrun a poor diet. We’re a society that demands prompt results, instant gratification, and the path of least resistance. Healthy efforts and realistic weight loss goals take time. Consider working with a licensed professional who can help you create a mindful plan around nutrition. Contact Andrew, or the next time you’re out shopping at Mackenthun’s, stop and schedule an appointment to meet with him. You can’t celebrate if you don’t initiate! https://mackenthuns.com

Letting Your Natural Beauty Shine DISCOVER HOW AWAKEN AESTHETICS AND WELLNESS HAS CREATED A WELCOMING SPACE FOR HOLISTIC WELLNESS We all know that as we age, things, well, change. Fine lines form, hair grays, and clothes don’t always fit the same. As much as we know how lucky we are to be given the gift of aging, it’s not always a walk in the park. Through social media, alternative sources, and people (aging or not, ironically), the message can get a little…wrinkly. We’re told we’re not thin enough or youthful enough, and if we decide to get a little nip and tuck or quick refresh, we’re fake and focusing too much on our exterior beauty.
Quincee MacGibbon Quincee MacGibbon, a certified family nurse practitioner and owner of Awaken Aesthetics and Wellness in Waconia, agrees that our culture has created a toxic environment of impossible beauty norms and expectations, and she wants to create a different standard. “I want my clients to feel empowered, confident, and beautiful in their own skin. My space is a space for everyone. I have an ethical responsibility through my profession to empower others to feel confident in their own skin. This work is my passion, and my clients are my priority.” When you step into her space, you feel it, and when you meet Quincee, you know it. Awaken Aesthetics and Wellness is adorned with gentle light, gorgeous décor, beautiful plants, and, quite possibly, the most comfortable chair you’ve ever had the pleasure of sitting in. If ease and relaxation had a look, this would be it. But then you start talking to Quincee; she listens, she understands, she explains, and you know. This whole self-care thing? It was one of your best ideas yet. Quincee believes that

as we go through varying seasons of life and neglect these basic needs, life can feel heavy, and as a result, our mental health can suffer. “It’s okay to prioritize yourself! It’s a balance. Take care of yourself so that you can be the best version of you.” Each treatment plan is individualized to her client’s goals, concerns, and priorities, and there is no pressure or judgment, only her promise of beautiful natural results. Quincee’s space, nestled in a cozy room in The Cutting Edge Salon’s quaint house, is dedicated to celebrating and embracing unique beauty and rejecting the notion of unrealistic beauty ideals. She collaborates frequently with others in the industry and is committed to continuing her education and advanced training, staying up to date on the most evidence-based options and safety standards. If you’re ready for a little self-care of the mind, body, and spirit, Quincee offers numerous options for all skin types and ages, including injectables, VI Chemical Peels, Micro-needling, and so much more. Aging is a shared journey, filled with many ups and downs and one that’s denied to many. For some, it’s a time when selfcare gets a little easier as kids grow and focus shifts, and for others, it’s always a bit of a challenge. As with any phase of life, we know maintaining mental wellness is important. It’s just not always easy to achieve. Having a professional you can turn to who believes in a holistic approach to caring for your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs can make all the difference. “Aging is a way of life, and the journey is beautiful; I am just here to help you do it gracefully!” Add to that confidently, beautifully, and with a lot of self-love. https://awakenaestheticsandwellness.com

In 1982 (ah, the 80s), Peter Cetera preached, “Everybody needs a little time away… from each other,” and like all the other genius ideas that were born from the 80s (the Walkman, Cabbage Patch Kids, legwarmers, shall we go on?) he was onto something. Extrovert, introvert, or somewhere in between, taking a break from those we love for a little refreshing cup-filling session, even if right in our own home, never hurt anyone. Leah Jones, the talent behind LJ Interiors, a design and home staging company in Chaska, agrees. “I believe that it’s important to have a space of your own so you can spend time doing things that you enjoy and to recharge your batteries.” Since most adults can’t seem to pay for a quiet moment to read or catch up on new episodes of True Detective, we’ll start there. While some may not peg the bathroom as a place to take the deepest of deep breaths, are you even a mom if you haven’t locked yourself in yours to finish a text or pluck your eyebrows in peace? Leah suggests putting together a basket of pampering items dedicated to relaxation to have at the ready when the noise level rises and order in the house falls. Think aromatic bath salts, a favorite book, headphones, a bath pillow, and dark chocolate. Or if you do your best de-stressing while staying busy, how about setting up a craft corner in the basement, a creative hub for journaling, or a wellness room complete with a treadmill and every streaming service known to man? If you can clear out a little space in your heated garage, it’s just the place for a man cave. Add a weightlifting bench, comfy IKEA furniture, and, of course, a TV and mini fridge for game days with friends. For the
littles, Leah says a home base for toys so that things stay as organized and Zen as possible, with a play area complete with soft music and art supplies, is a no-brainer. For the older kids, she suggests having a dedicated space for books and games and maybe even a game table or reading nook that can define the space and make it more inviting. And we can’t forget our pawed pals! They’re a huge part of our family, too, so they also deserve to have their own hairy haven. Include a soft, cozy bed to retire to after a morning of squirrel chasing, and don’t skimp on that basket of toys. A common thread, Leah emphasizes, for all peaceful retreats is to ensure the space celebrates the unwinder, four-legged or not, their interests and who they are. No matter if you’re looking to find quiet quarters for your new middle schooler who has a heavier homework load or dad wants a serene space to stretch his woodworking skills, Leah has some fun and impactful tips for decorating. “Plants can act as an air purifier, therefore having a calming effect and improving a person’s overall stress and anxiety. Incorporating soft lighting or twinkle lights can have a big influence on the ambiance and, therefore, the serenity seeker as well.” She also shares that adding pillows and blankets will bring instant warmth to a room, and using candles or diffusers can create an environment conducive to productivity and relaxation. Hmmm…a cozy blanket strewn atop an 80s-inspired bean bag chair seated beside a mesmerizing, retro lava lamp…another genius (and tranquil) idea. I think even Peter Cetera would approve. https://ljinteriorsmn.com

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS DURING the sick season
OWNER OF WACONIA WOMEN’S HEALTH SHARES HOW TO STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER ARTICLE BY AMANDA WAGNER

As the seasons change, so does our susceptibility to illness. While there’s no surefire way to avoid getting sick, adopting a proactive approach to health will support your immune system and minimize the impact of seasonal bugs. Stephanie Braunwarth, a licensed acupuncturist, is board-certified in fertility, women’s health, and Chinese medicine. She is also the owner of Waconia Women’s Health and shares insights from her more than 10 years of experience, emphasizing Chinese medicine’s role as a lifestyle medicine. Stephanie notes supplements should complement a healthy diet and lifestyle rather than serve as substitutes. Foundational health supports a strong immune system and starts with the basics – getting adequate sleep, managing stress, engaging in regular exercise, and steering clear of excessive sugar consumption. This means prioritizing movement, saying no more than yes, and being conscious of what you consume. It’s not a coincidence that cold and flu season runs from late October to late February. This aligns with holidays and celebrations that are often all about the sweets. Sugar contributes to inflammation and lowers your immune response. While you don’t have to avoid sugar altogether, indulging in moderation is important to stay healthy. “Chinese medicine is lifestyle medicine,” Stephanie emphasizes. “What choices are we making throughout our day that are free of charge and can have huge effects on our immune system?” Handwashing is a simple yet effective practice. Maintaining good hygiene remains crucial in preventing the spread of illnesses, especially during the sick season. When it comes to supplements, Stephanie knows what she likes and relies on over and
over again. That being said, consulting with a healthcare professional is important to ensure supplements are right for you. Some of her favorite supplements to support a healthy immune system include: • Vitamin C, known for its antioxidant properties, plays a vital role in supporting the immune system. • Vitamins D and A are also recognized contributors to overall immune function. • Glutathione, a potent antioxidant, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), often used for sinus issues, round out her top picks. • For children, elderberry syrup in the form of gummies offers a tasty and immune-boosting option. Stephanie uses herbal formulas, too. These formulas, readily available at her practice, can be taken at the onset of symptoms to help minimize both the severity and duration of illness. In addition to supplements, Stephanie encourages integrating immune-boosting herbs and roots into daily meals. Garlic, known for its antimicrobial properties, and ginger root are excellent choices. By making intentional dietary decisions, individuals can further support their immune systems. As the sick season approaches, Stephanie’s advice serves as a guide for cultivating a resilient immune system. Through a combination of lifestyle choices, effective supplements, and the incorporation of herbal remedies, individuals can empower themselves to navigate the changing seasons with greater resilience and well-being. Cheers to a healthier year! Learn more: https://waconiawomenshealth.com/
