The Style Issue SEPTEMBER 2022

September is known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Not only are we bringing you fashion that will help keep you on top of the latest styles, but we are also sharing stylish interior spaces and trendy outdoor living around town. Styles are ever-changing, and the fashion world continuously brings us a fresh new take on something from generations past, or shares an entirely new concept for us to enjoy. Each decade has its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades later, the originality of each look that is reflected oftentimes is connected to the culture and music of the day.  I can remember being a young girl when I begged my mom to get me M.C. Hammer pants (yes, you read that correctly). Crazy, but they have circled back! Not quite the same, but in a new form, called the jogger pant, which I love to wear on a casual day or for a workout. And I knew when I donated all those flare jeans I had (after I finally got used to skinny jeans), that it was only a matter of time before they would make a comeback. Time to go shopping! Fashion choices can reveal a little bit of our personality, so it’s a great way to express ourselves. Bring on fall and new styles! We will see you around town.

Mackenthun's Named "Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year 2022" Mackenthun's Fine Foods was recently named "Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year 2022" in the Southwest Minnesota region. This award recognizes Mackenthun's for promoting locally grown products and farms. Several factors in the decision-making process were con sidered such as how grocers promote Minnesota Grown items in their social media and stores, as well as how many Minnesota Grown farm ers and products the grocer carries.

The 2022-2023 school year is an exciting one for Cologne Academy as they celebrate the 15th anniversary of providing excellent education in Cologne and surrounding areas. A testament to their hard work, they're also celebrating the one-year anni versary of Cologne Academy Online which expanded learning options for families. With nearly 100 students participating statewide, we congrat ulate them on their success.

As we watch summer appear in the rear-view mirror, we all need a little something to look forward to. Instead of dread ing the cooler temps and shorter days, what if we embrace the change and focus on what makes fall great? Sip on a steaming mug of cider, burn a woodsy scented candle, or pull out the crockpot that’s been collecting dust. Don’t panic and think of puffer coats and snow boots just yet. Fall isn’t just the road to winter; it’s its own season, with its own space and style. Think chunky heels, eyelet dresses, and ALL the denim, and get to feeling all the feels that fall 2022 has to offer. Jodi Larson, owner of Willa June in Victoria, helps us say goodbye to our sandals and sundresses and hello to the trends that will inspire us as we look at fall through a new lens. Earth tones like ecru and numerous shades of brown were a warm weather favorite this summer and carry so beautifully into fall. You’ll find them in backpacks, wide brim hats, and cozy cardigans. One of the surprising trends this year is the bold palette popping up everywhere. Roomy kelly green sweaters and bright pink button-downs will make you feel run way ready. Jodi shares that we’ll see pink well into the holidays. Fuchsia ugly Christmas sweater, anyone? Outerwear is stealing the thunder this year with too many options to count. Yes, that plaid shacket in your closet is still an option, but how about a chic poncho or classic bomber? Wear them over maxi dresses or, as you slowly wean off your skinny jeans addiction, with a pair of cigarette jeans. Slip into a pair of nostalgia-infused clogs and allow yourself to enjoy the season. There are just so many options for fall.

Waconia City Lifestyle invited Justin Goche, owner of Waconia Landscaping Co., to share styl ish trends for luxury outdoor living. We wanted to know the best ways for creating a space that will allow us to extend our outdoor entertaining season.

WHAT ARE THE HOTTEST TRENDS IN OUTDOOR UPGRADES YOU’RE SEEING?

“Kitchens and gas fireplaces have been popular in years past, but now it’s about creating a backyard space that can be lived in for more than a single season. Everyone seems to want that

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR UPDATED OUTDOOR SPACE?

“We spend a lot of time entertaining in the summer and with both sides of the family living locally, the parties are at our house. We tend to turn up the pool heat so our guests can swim well into fall. And we’ve added a hot tub to enhance the space in the winter. The pizza oven was inspired by our trips to Italy. It brings together my love of cooking and my husband’s love of grilling.

HOMEOWNER INSPIRATION

outside oasis at home where adults and kids want to be. I’ve had numerous requests to create outdoor spaces that function as an extension of people’s interiors. Patios with pergolas, outdoor fireplaces and bonfire pits, comfortable areas to relax, cook and enjoy food are top considerations.”

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR EXPANDING THE USE OF OUTDOOR SPACES INTO FALL AND BEYOND?

We wanted to know, firsthand, what inspired homeowners to upgrade their outdoor spaces and extend past the sum mer season. We asked Kathy Norton, one of Justin’s clients, to give us some insight.

“Personally, I’m planning an upgrade at home under my deck with a fireplace, pizza oven, and hot tub I can enjoy after plowing snow. We’re often hired to clear snow off patios for outside entertaining so the focus can be on preparing for guests.”

HAVE YOU MADE ANYTHING UNIQUE IN THE PIZZA OVEN?

“To extend the season, we put out Faribault Mill blankets, and change out our striped pillows for plaids. For us, set ting the autumnal theme makes it cozy. We light the trees with café lights, torches and lanterns to create a warm and wel coming atmosphere. We put out bushel baskets of blankets by the fires, a s’more charcuterie bar for company, and mums in planters throughout. Given that we are Minnesotans, we also plan to plow the patio so we can use it all winter long.”

25| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WACONIASEPTEMBER 2022

WHAT DO YOUR GUESTS SAY ABOUT THE SPACE?

“The overwhelming response has been wonderful because we can stay outside much later into the evening and season. It makes people not want to leave, which I love. The more people around my table the happier I am. We grab a fall mulled cider, a blanket, and a seat, and enjoy our new space for as long as we can.”

“We look forward to trying prime rib and spatchcock chicken this fall. We’re learning as we go. I make a yummy potato, chicken, and rosemary pizza which we make with pure Italian flour.”

HOW WILL YOU TRANSITION AND ENTERTAIN FOR FALL?

when ...  •

Eight years ago, while working in hospi tality sales, Chrissy’s position required her to work holidays, nights, and weekends; consuming the majority of her time which meant time away from her kids. It took a toll on her spirit. Realizing she wanted life to be different, she left her tenure in the hospitality world. It took time in between jobs to make it all come together. “It was a big financial investment for me at the time,” she states. But she persevered, got her Real Estate license, and her new journey began.

Chrissy expresses that even though life has thrown her twists and turns, it’s taught her valuable lessons along the way. She is so happy and grateful that she took the leap, and started this new career at 48 years young. “My mission is to empower others to reach for the impossible by dreaming big, working hard, and never giving up.”

Each morning Chrissy Peterson shares an inspiring message for the day with her friends and followers on Facebook. Her ritual stems from a mindset transformed; from once feeling the constant chase of life to one that embodies grace, gratitude, and enjoyment in the journey.  recently shared a post from Deb Frischmon, a local Waconia resident, which states:  so important to be happy with where while dreaming for can enjoy the grateful... the the the on the back along the way... time to look back and see how far actually have is all about the journey... all live for the destination... the end result... be happy when I lose all the weight  when I get the perfect job  when I land the deal or get the promotion  when I retire  when I meet my soulmate  when I’m married  when I have a bigger house  when I have a smaller house  we be happy change the way you look at things and the things you look at change... changing perspective... finding all the good in life

Jenna, one of her clients, told us that she felt like she had known Chrissy forever. “I never thought Waconia would be a place I could live or afford, but she helped me put all the pieces together. I couldn’t love my home more!”

“There are so many amazing opportuni ties in Waconia,” says Chrissy. Recently she learned that inventory had opened up in Fields of Waconia by D.R. Horton. She knew she wanted to provide this as an option for her buyers. This new development sits conve niently across from the high school and only one mile from the lake, making it, “an amazing location for Recognizingfamilies.”this,on September 21st from 3-5 pm she is hosting an open house for people to pop in, say hi and learn what this new devel opment has to offer.

Bathrooms frequently get the special treatment with new flooring and lighting updates, while bedrooms get extra love with a décor or paint change when styles get outdated, or the mood strikes us. But what about the pantry, arguably the space in your house that gets the most traffic? Where are the new shelves, added counter space, and organized bins that make our lives easier and style it up a notch? Step aside bathrooms and bedrooms, it’s the pantry’s time to shine. Christine Niven from Excel Builders, along with sister company Artisan Cabinet Company, gives us a glimpse into the hot new trend of showpiece pantries and why they can be practical and fashionable at the same time.

MAKE IT FANCY

In her home, Christine has a small pantry with five shelves. “It’s small but it has it all; labeled bins, pretty baskets, a lazy susan. It’s all coor dinated and easy to find,” proving that you can build your dream pantry, big or small.

Small Spaces

Spark Joy Use shelving to display your kids' school work, art or to play with your decorating scheme. Add in clear storage containers and fill them with vibrant cookies, candy, and other Whethertreats. youwant a tiny refresh or a complete overhaul, there are ideas galore to create the pantry of your dreams!

Going with a chevron butcher block instead of a traditional one and unexpected paint colors are all ways to make this space an Instagrammer’s dream, while custom cabine try will give it charming timelessness.

Christine has found room to hide double ovens in a pantry remodel and if you don’t want to decorate your kitchen with that humongous, food-caked high chair, she can hide that too. “Some of my younger clients are really excited about adding a coffee bar and prepping area or simply to just have a spot to make a mess and close the door.” Hang the family calendar, and a couple of labeled mail bins, and don’t forget a charging station so maybe, just maybe, your kids will know where theirs is at the end of the day.

YOU PUT WHAT IN YOUR PANTRY?

“I get to know the client and the home,” Christine shares. She then gets to work on researching. Pinterest and designers on Instagram are helpful resources, but it all comes together when she uses her own experience to create a truly unique space for her clients. “I have my clients rate the importance of features, style, function, working space, etc., to get a better idea of what’s truly important to them.” From there they get to work figuring out how to utilize the space creatively and start on down the list.

TIPS AND IDEAS TO CREATE THE PERFECT PANTRY SPACE STYLISHMAKEOVERPANTRY

Glass front doors bring your pantry to the next level and give it a lot of visual interest. Here’s where it gets fun. Beautify the space with boldly labeled jars, decorative frames, wicker baskets, cookbooks, and mesh front produce drawers (good for airflow too!)
